I used to live in Canada in Ottawa.Canada is such a beautiful country. Calgary, Alberta I love this city. Calgary summers are unbelievable. Sunny and warm pretty much every day.The winters are definitely could, but the sun still shines most days so it doesnt feel grey and miserable like a lot of other places in canada .If you like to ski or snowboard it helps get you through the winter since the mountains are only an hour away. Some of the best sking in North America.Hugs to you from Chicago, Illinois, United States.

Dude, I live here. It is NEVER -35 for "MONTHS" at a time!!! Where did you hear this?? Winters here are comfortable. Yes we get the occasional arctic outbreak when it can get to -30s but those are balanced by lots of sunshine and frequent Chinooks.

The downtown section where the trains travel east and west is a fare-free zone. It's marked on the maps at every station. If you have to buy a regular fare, the ticket good for 1-1/2 hours.

I love Calgary, they call it the Houston ( where I was born ) of the North.
As you fly in from the East, you cross a vast flat plain across Saskatchewan and Alberta. There you're met with a vertical wall of mountains where Calgary meets you like a jewel embedded in a gold mine.
When I worked there for Royal Dutch Shell, we were pioneering the shale oil technology in Yellowknife north of Edmonton; but all our computers were in the downtown Shell Oil Building.
I learned to ski there, spending weekends in Banff and across the Continental divide.

In terms of winter, Calgary doesn’t stay -35 degrees at months of a time. It’s only certain times of the months. It’s normally -15 to -20 normally during the winters. We do get chinook winds that melt the snow and has for a great scenic view. Great video though!! Keep it up.

It might be below -30 Celsius a couple days a year. even -20 is rare to last weeks at a time. We also get Chinooks every few weeks which can cause winter temperatures to go 10 degrees or more above freezing at least a few days per month to break up the cold.

  • @jrguitar33

Calgary isnt - 35 for 3 months a year maybe 2 weeks in march or Feb. Winter are fairly mild there due to Chinooks. Now nothern ab is that cold for 3 month like Fort mac

It’s actually has crazy temperature variance due to the wind from the Rockies; it is the sunniest city in Canada and gets little snow due to the Chinook winds which can cause the city to experience warm winter days and very hot summers; the summer months can regularly reach +30 degrees celsius.

JEFF: Question & Suggestion for a video -- could you do a video on the downsides of the "living in Hawaii dream" experience. I think you're objective economic and social insights would be interesting. I also think it would get a gazillion UA-cam views. As obviously you have lived there and gave it a good shot, and obviously you have traveled the world. Would love to see such a video at some point really being honest about the downsides. If you need to satisfy all the whiners you could do a sister episode of the upsides. Many thanks for your great and prolific work. I feel like I could give up my coffee expenses if I got a blood transfusion from you.😊

Calgary rarely if ever hits - 35 Celsius, so why would you say this occurs every day during winter? In fact I can count on one hand how many times we've dipped that low in the last 45 years. I've lived in Calgary since 1977. Typical winter daytime temperatures are between -12 Celsius and 0 Celsius. That said, it's still fairly common to see a couple two week stretches during winter of -20 Celsius degree weather.
However, during a chinook event, temperatures can rise as high as + 15 Celsius (65F) during the winter and last for a week or more. There can be many chinooks each winter. Oh, and 54 degrees Fahrenheit (12 C) is not typical for late June temperatures. Yesterday, September 16th we were 32 degrees Celsius, which is approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Back in mid-to- late May, the temperatures were mid-to-upper 20s Celsius, so upwards of 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and June was even warmer. There are plenty inaccurate statements within your video...-35 degrees Celsius everyday in winter, Lol.
Calgary and Canada in general has what's referred to as a continental climate, same as many parts of the world, including large portions of the USA.
And I'm not sure why the concept of an indoor mall seems so uncommon to you? I've travelled all over the US, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, California, Etc. Most malls are indoors. If it's outdoors, it's generally referred to as a strip mall, and we have plenty of those in Calgary too.
I've also lived in the interior British Columbia Canada, where temperatures can get extremely hot during summer. As hot, or hotter than anywhere in Arizona. In fact, last summer Lytton British Columbia hit 49.9 degrees Celsius, which equates to roughly 122 degrees Fahrenheit. I don't think Phoenix has ever been that hot, nor has Las Vegas Nevada. It's very common for that part of British Columbia to hit the mid-40s Celsius during the summer months.
FYI, the C-Train is free all the way along 7th Avenue downtown. There's plenty of signage indicating this.
You also walked past the escalator twice that would have taken you to the second floor to the large Regency Palace restaurant, best-known for its dim sum.
Of all of the malls in Calgary, North Hill Mall is one of the smallest. The largest mall is Chinook Centre, followed I believe by Market Mall. There's also Cross Iron Mills mall, but technically that's just outside the Calgary city limits in the rural District of Rocky View
