    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 5 років тому +5

      Only poor point of those Cressida's was the rear differential, they do not like having full power put through them from that engine, though with that one being automatic, while here in South Africa they only ever came out with either a 4 speed or 5 speed manual, the driving style is different. Good thing is the Corolla and Cressida shared a lot of the drivetrain, so spares should be easy enough, and you probably can pick up the parts as used spares for the lights.
      I liked my Corolla, learnt a lot about body rust repair on it, along with engine overhauls. I know how the drive in that Cressida feels as well.

    Toyota Cressida used to be super popular in the middle east back in the 80's and 90's. You can still see them around here in Bahrain from time to time. My parents had a 1982 and 1992 Cressida and they loved it. There was also the Toyota Crown, the flagship luxury car at the time. They sold it all the way up to 1997 before they stopped selling it here.

    I love my 1981 Cressida MX62 "Luxury Sedan". Bought it 7 years ago with a blown head gasket due to a bad fan clutch. Water going out the exhaust not in the oil, thank goodness. A top end rebuild got it back on the road. The 5ME is a simple chain driven single overhead cam engine, so it is easy to work on. Finding parts can be a pain, but its worth it. What a comfortable ride! And with 182k miles it runs like a sewing machine.

      AM and FM stereo, luxury. That tape deck probably does not work though, as all the little rubber belts and idlers would now have been well cooked by the heat, and gone alternately brittle and soggy. But probably a nearly all metal deck, so repairable with just new rubber tyres on the shafts.

    Wonderful memories as my Dad had an 84 in Canada that was handed down to me, I passed it on to my son, who then passed it back to me when he left Canada to do his post doc in Australia. I passed the car onto a girlfriend , now wife, and sold it to a good home in 2003. Best all around car that I ever owned and was sorry to see it go, probably still around as it was solid and ultra reliable. Canadian winters took a toll on body of car and I had to fight rust problems but it was a pleasure to drive.

    By today's standards, it's not very luxurious, but in '83.... Cars now have too many bells and whistles (sound and fury, signifying nothing). If you compare these to say a 5 series BMW of the time, the Cressida was more luxurious for sure.
      Beemer fans will shoot me saying that but it’s true.
      A top line 2.8i Cressida in 83 had more bells and whistles than a 528i .
      A softer and more quieter ride.
      The Beemer was the sports sedan . A Cressida was a luxo barge.

    Thousands of buttons to control everything, none of the junk 'touchscreens' of today, it was just pure luxury.
    Rode as silent as can be. It was and still is a beautiful car. Nice presentation!
    The purpose of the air pump was not to simply increase volume of air rather it introduced fresh "02" (oxygen) into the hot exhaust and caused the unburned petrol to ignite and "burn-off" so the gas fumes did not go into the atmosphere. Unburned petrol fumes either from the gas tank or the exhaust is the main cause of gas engine pollution. Only 30% of the potential energy is used in the combustion chamber. The rest is waste. Modern cars with computers do a much better job of controlling the ignition and fuel burn hence, no air pump needed anymore!

    • @omartinoco9930

    You know the older I get the more and more I see the 1980's as the golden age of Automobiles.. Because they still had some of the tried and true old style designs and better quality metals used in many of the parts.. Making many systems of the old 80's vehicles seem indestructible compared to modern cars that break down quickly, as well as some modern items like fuel injection/ABS/3 point belts/modern power steering/and modern electronic ignition systems/disc brakes/and some times electric seats and windows, as well as many more that you would not get on a 50's car. A lot of the 80's cars were like the older well built cars, but with cleaner running engines and modern items still in use to this day. The only down fall of the 1980's automobiles was the power output of the engines... But in most cases they could easily keep up with traffic today, just not going to set any track records with them.
