Yo this game was freaking legendary!
To this day some of the most satisfying air combat in my memory as a gamer
I hope that Akira being in SFV will encourage Capcom to make another Rival Schools game.
I doubt it will, but a guy can dream...
only hope there is that someone digs through the scraps of Ono's SF6 (which apparently was going to be a team game) and builds something off of that.
We've been hoping this for the past 10-15 years, and the same goes for Darkstalkers. Darkstalkers was "reportedly" being talked about, but nothing came about with it, at least I haven't heard anything regarding it. But Akira being in SFV does make the possibility of a new Rival Schools / Project Justice a bit more real. The real question, though, is: WILL IT BE JUST AS GOOD AS THE OLD GAMES? Because they could change some mechanics around and the game might not even feel the same. But who knows. I'd take a "wait and see" approach before getting hype about anything Rival Schools related.
a Darkstalkers appearance won't hurt much either...
if they're having Rose and Gill involved, might as well crank the mysticism just one notch higher
11:58 Fun fact : Ken Bogard is actually a FGC personality that’s very known in France. He plays and comments on some events and has been around for a very long while on the French Internet.
What about Terry Masters
@@pacman10124 earth-2
Akira is such a fan favorite in Rival Schools that is probably why she was chosen to be in Street Fighter V and it's good Capcom didn't abandoned the Rival Schools characters.
Batsu is way cooler
I think most of the Rival School characters are eventually going to make it into Street Fighter 6.
@@monstersinthecity He was playable in TvC so its cool to see another character make the jump to the current day.
@@joeyzapata6786 or just make rival schools 3
To be fair, Akira got one of the main roles in Project Justice since she was responsible in stopping various students from going to Gedo High and starting a "war".
That only happens if you fail to beat Demon Daigo.
Seriously, she was a badass in PJ.
I feel like Roy, Ken, Terry, and Cody are all cousins. lol.
Also, I really hope that if you get a finish with the Daigo summon in SFV, he ends up posing behind Akira like how it happened with the team up moves in this game. That would be a nice touch.
Rival School’s story mode is so well done. Right balance of dialogue scenes and playable fights.
Project Justice & Tech Romancer have THE best story modes in fighting games.
Well, not really, but it’s well integrated and there’s a separate universal gauntlet mode for a more common arcade mode experience.
People may shit on it, but I think another runner for good fighting game story modes is Evil Zone. Each character's story is presented as a season of a different anime from their given perspective with unique dialogue and interactions before each fight, and ending "next time on" segments with commentary and stills for the next fight.
Roy was always my favorite, I would literally throw games just so I could hear him say “cmon babay”
I always thought that he was saying “chao baby” to go with his rich jerk persona. That’s Engrish for ya. Lol
@Yung Wun Isn't that what King from KOF always says at the beginning of a round?
@@ShinRyojin I prefer Roy over Tiffany... and that annoying voice of hers. He was at least useful in combat.
Shoutouts to SFV referencing the Rival Schools dating sim
Really? How? When?
@@ProjectSudoku akira's SFV costumes originated from the dating sim what he imply ?
@@steevan Ahh, gotcha.
@@steevan Yeah
Man, I remember everyone playing this in high school, and the mastery of air combos was basically the pinnacle of fighting game swag. Rival Schools, X-Men vs Street Fighter, and Gran Turismo were the holy trinity of gaming for us at the time.
YESIRRRR
Gran turismos air combos were hard as fuck though
I love how Edge's combat style is just stabbing people. Oh, those crazy teens (?)
I always thought of as capcom's Iori
Hehehehe
@@georgehernandez2156 I like to think of him as "Yamazaki, Jr."
He can also kick sand on people's faces.
@@MrTrellheim And one of his air specials he spins around while throwing sand
I'm getting the vibe that eventually, many characters from the lesser known Capcom games will make their way into the street Fighter canon like Rival Schools, Power Stone, etc.
Well Rival Schools was always thought of as being in the same universe as Street Fighter in the first place because of Sakura and various other references. But to my knowledge it was never straight up hard confirmed by Capcom until the stream that revealed Akira for SFV though. Stuff like Power Stone or Darkstalkers probably wouldn't happen because of the lore disconnect. Well I guess Darkstalkers is possible, they can just say SF happens in the human realm of that series or whatever, but Power Stone is more tricky because that world is so definitely not Earth lol. At least not Earth in the way SF and FF are in, with irl countries and everything. Normally this wouldn't matter and I can absolutely see them as guest characters for fun, but SFV is the most focused the series has been with story and keeping things within the SF/FF world or at least finding ways to connect them like Zeku does with Strider. And it seems like they're trying to do more with narrative and canon going forward too given the hints during Luke's reveal.
@@MagillanicaLouM I guess I went with this theory not only because of the inclusion of Akira but because I felt that Luke is an updated version of Captain Commando....
On the Rooftop of Taiyo High School is still one of the best CAPCOM fighter stage themes EVER.
That Capcom Guitar is in full force in that song
I think that the song was used as Batsu's character theme in TVC
So Akira was basically Samus with the "Surprise I'm actually a girl!" and then you unlock the naked version.
Who was the first Samus that isn't actually Samus, basically, the second Samus?
Her voice is a dead giveaway
@@baboner1046 I think her voice is actually different without the helmet like more feminine
I hope Akira in Street Fighter lead into more Rival Schools characters in Street Fighter.
Nah rather a new rival schools in general
Yes we should have been have more Rival Schools characters in Street Fighter ages ago but thanks to Yoshinori Ono that didn't happen.
I hope it leads to a new (or reimagined) Rival Schools game. I mean, if Guilty Gear Strive can find a modicum of mainstream success with little girls using anchors and a guy who uses fans to fight - why can't a new Rival Schools?...
Batsu was in CvT and CvSnk right?
@@christiandauz3742 Batsu is in Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Kyosuke in Capcom vs. SNK 2
That Akira comic book comes out later this month.
I think it comes out next week.
I think it comes out the 15th
I think it comes out

Honestly this is still one of, IF NOT my favorite fighting game I've ever played, never got to play with others, but I loved playing through the story with all the different characters over and over. I have a physical copy and always have an emulator copy ready to go for when the mood kicks in!
"High schoolers beating the shit out of each other" the game is the Japanese name of River City Ransom
MY FAVORITE FIGHTING GAME OF ALL TIME!!! LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Even to this day, nothing beats the Story Mode from Rival Schools as it was so revolutionary for its time with fully voiced character interactions and branching paths. Still one of the top games I've ever had the pleasure of playing in my life.
I hope Max plays the PS1 Japan exclusive 1.5 version of Rival Schools. It adds two characters: a school news photographer and swimmer. I have it.
"Game reveals Akira's gender"
Artist: Aaaaand suddenly she has a butt!
Me: ... goddammit Japan.
🤣🤣🤣
Was about to say, the very cutscene they do the gender-reveal they make SURE to depict her bikergear hugging her ass so tightly one can clearly see the different cheeks. I'm no biker but I'm pretty sure their clothes are rather thick and like not very form-revealing because they're meant to protect the biker if they do a nasty fall... buuut I'm not a character designer so what do I know.
I miss my Rival Schools franchise so much ;___;
I know. They only made two games but man does project justice feel like the third part of a franchise
We need a new game and anime to come along with it. Crazy the fighting game built to have a Aimee never got one.
This series deserve so much love.
It really does. Capcom's sitting on a gold mine even with this series alone, they should do the work and make it happen.
@@LandofBrickForests They can reboot it and start with a new anime series and have sakura back introduce Ibuki. They have a lot to work with on their hands.
@@grouchygamer2404Yeah, that would be a lot for them, but if they did try it and do it right. It mostly likely would pay off for them.
Capcom needs to bring back this series it was so awesome you definitely saw the influences in Street Fighter X Tekken.
I was always saddened that Shoma never got crossover love. For me, as a kid, he was my Rival Schools mascot, despite Batsu being the poster boy. I’m just glad that the franchise hasn’t died, even if Shoma isn’t shown love.
Capcom needs to make a new darkstalkers, rival schools and powerstone or remasters. They are sitting on a gold mine of content
George Hernandez If a MvC4 with that set of franchises in it was to be announced at an E3 and be released in the near future, I'd SOOOOOO forgive Capcom for what they did in 2016. Again, only one can dream. 😊
Street Fighter is the only one that prints money, but I agree on sooo many levels. Hopefully Akira gets enough exposure so that a new rival schools could get greenlit eventually.
@@Wolfedge75 unfortunately you’re right, none of those games mentioned sold well and therefore they will never have another game made for them. I can see some collections or rereleases in the future, power stone was released for psp as a collection, rival schools had that sequel for ps1 that was only released in Japan and of course project justice so that can be a collection and why the dark stalkers collection for ps2 was only released for Japan despite dark stalkers for psp was a launch title that same year I’ll never know.
If capcom didn't kill off 80% of it's fighting game teams after setting super lofty sales goals, we might actually have had some non-SF games in the last decade and a half...
Power Stone is getting a remake in 2024 according to the Capcom leak.
The music of this game is so chill, i love it so much.
Forget DLC, I want a full new Rival Schools game or at least an HD remaster of the old games.
Hearing those attack grunts are nostalgic. I used to play this in our arcade back home.
Wish school fights were more like that
can you imagine being in a school fight and the kids just star leaping 8 feet into the air and throwing Hadoukens
@@brunop.8745 that sounds very awesome
Wish schools had so much beef with each other that people would just leave during school hours to punch the shit out of random kids from the other schools.
@AT Productions They crush each other's skulls in slow motion?
@AT Productions Dark. 😐
Damn, we already are 33% done with this legacy!
And the Oro Legacy
What's the 3rd game she was in?
@@toysmostwanted Might be referring to the updated version of the first one that only released in Japan
That's only if he plays Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 which I highly doubt he will, unless chat helps him a ton.
Edge: Guys this is Akira, she's one of the bois!!!
Gan: "So, what do you want, mister younger brother of the big boss?"
Very obviously female-presenting voice: "Yes, it is I, Mister Younger Brother, here to uphold gender norms and never remove this helmet for no reason in particular!"
"Wow, Younger Brother. You're a real man's man! No weak little GIRL could fight like that!"
Akira: (Resisting urge to launch into Air Combo)
You absolutely, positively, LOVE to see it.
Her biker outfit looks like what would happen if skullomania became the final boss. Dose anyone else thinks that?
When I see this game in arcade back in the days, I was thinking, what does Skullomania doing in this new franchise?
I was genuinly shocked too, when I descovered that he was a she. 😂
I really want a new Rival Schools now.
Have Sean be a guest character and that's why he wasn't in 5 as a fighter because he was enjoying his summer like everyone else. Now he's gotta go back and kick some more ass for the pride of his class.
But isn't Sean from Brazil?
@@730Flare He could be a foreign exchange student to make him fit in. It also could be a joke because he's from another fighting game series.

You need to play project justice. It is fun.
You should be hype for Rin, Obito.

@@Davethawave1999 i got project justice on dreamcast and rival schools on ps1
I don’t know much about Rival Schools but I heard a lot of it. I only knew that Sakura from the Alpha series is in one of the Rival Schools games. I can see why Max is playing Akira is because she’s the next dlc character in SF V along with Oro.
RIVAL SCHOOLS 3 needs to happen.
So max is doing an Oro Legacy AND an Akira Legacy at the same time??? Awesome!
It's 3 games each so it's not too hard.
I hope Batsu, Kyosuke, Tiffany and Roy are the next Rival Schools characters in Street Fighter.
They need a new game like powerstone does
Shoma, Roberto, Hayato too!
Put all of them in Street Fighter
26:30 imagine that a fighting game embracing story telling and lore. Lol Capcom needs to look at how they used to do things
Akira! Can't wait to play as her in SF5.
Gan's 6'6" and 15, the hell outta here. His parents need to stop feeding him, he's grown too powerful!
30:52 See, that's perfect localization right there. Usually for "Nakama" we just get "friend" as the translation. Saying "You're one of us" is much more fitting. I don't know why that got lost along the way for translators.
At least it's better than leaving it untranslated "because it's too deep to translate".
Imagine if they brought in more RS characters into SF6. I'd love to see Roy or Batsu show up.
Here's a game I'm so glad I still have in my collection, really one of those underrated classics. Hell not too long ago, checked out my old memory cards with the game, and boy did I put in some serious time into the Evolution Disc (aka Disc 2) with all of it's extra game modes
Thank God I still have my copy. I playing this regularly for retro gaming. Can't wait to play with her in SFV
Way things are going I wouldn’t be surprised if Rival Schools popped up on the Switch.
You know.... that might be better than the community thinks. Because admitting if it was on the other platforms it might not get room to breath without a full-dive into the esports arena.
I am not sure that RS as a brand would be ready for that. Or should be that.
Max! Do you have the ability to get the Rival Schools 2 game from JP? They had AMAZING mini games involving the sports of the characters. Lol the long distance volleyball throw. Baseball game. The mini Olympics were GEMS!
Wish they ported or remade Rival Schools!
This was one of my favs back in the day!
I played this game in Japanese and always wanted to know what the hell was going on. But the OST and setting were just so incredible.
With Akira coming in SFV I hope this opens things up for a new Rival Schools, or at the very least more guest characters, Final Fight style.
Rival Schools United by Fate had three story variation per team and separate arcade mode endings for every character then the sequel upped the ante by having hidden character variations that only can be unlocked through victories or losses in key fights.
In that game, you are punished if you do too well with Batsu, that is all that I will say about that.
It was all enough to spoil a person on what they could reasonably expect from fighting games.
This game deserves a 2021 makeover with all the same mechanics. The same insane launcher height. Sidestep smoothness and speedy normals that connect so amazingly well together.
My. Absolute. Favorite. Capcom. Fighter.
Nah just do a reboot
I don't know what akira is saying before she starts fighting, but the way she says it is cool. She sounds cool in that second win outro too.
Well, that was heartwarming af.
Akira feels like a Tekken character for some reason. I think because of her fighting stance
That’s because Michelle & Julia used Bajiquan which also the same fighting style for Akira.
Funny thing is, we never got the actual English version of the game. Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 was the only one that was selling in stores so most of us brute-forced our way through the menus to find the correct modes and then when we discovered the minigames, we'd found the PS equivalent to Mario Party (at least we thought so at the time). Damn I wish Itsuno's success with DMC5, coupled with Akira's response in SFV, would lead to a new Justice Gakuen game. It'll be gangbusters if Itsuno gets to direct it as well.
many years ago, I brought my Dreamcast to a Christmas party at my job because a bunch of us were gamers. Project Justice was one of the games I brought. The district manager actual played with us, he wasn't bad iirc. Akira, Batsu and Zaki were my mains
I still remember running home from junior high school to play this on my ps1. Then the Project Justics sequel on my Dreamcast.
"Akuma is going to school?"
Well, that's a great secret boss we haven't found yet!!! ^^
For the next rival school game...if there is...
Akuma desperate to find a worthy challenge, decides to become a high school PE teacher.
Rival Schools NEEDS to be remastered
SFV Akira will probably have several times more polygons than every model in this entire game lol
Ah yes, i too write the blood type of my friends on my notebook
It's a weird bit of cultural clash: In Japan, blood types are used as a shorthand for personality. For instance, if you're Type O, you're seen as confident, but self-absorbed, Type B are considered passionate, creative and yet lazy, etc. That might almost make sense in a notebook if you're just getting used to someone and you're trying to boil down their personality into a little "flashcard" to remember.
This belief is really not known outside of Asia, so it looks weird as fuck.
@@SuperLuigiKart64 Damn, i don't even know my blood type, i would not have a personality in Japan
first fighting game i ever actually put time into. my sisters and i played the heck out of it. Kyosuke and Hideo were my faves. actually learned how to do Hideo's aerial dashes pretty well. that felt good :D
I don't know if chat told you, but Roberto is Japanese with Brazilian ancestry. He wants to live up to his grandfather legacy. In his good ending his hands get injured and he can't play goalkeeper anymore, but he gets scouted as a striker.
The PS1 story mode had multiple endings for every character. I think the companion didn't matter as much as beating the game two times with different companions. The first time you beat the story mode, you got a sad ending with text over a generic background. The second time you got the proper ending. The genius thing is, if I recall correctly, all good endings were compatible among themselves, not a single one contradicted any of the other endings.
TRIVIA: Kyoko, the nurse, has the most damaging normal attack in the game, a command grab where she gives you a chiropractic massage. The second one is Gan picking you up by the leg and mashing you against the ground several times.
Thank you max!! The only playthrouhg that i watched from beginning to end! :D
Ahhh the days of my youth… Glad to see this game has not been forgotten.
I hope this means we’ll one day see Rival Schools and Project Justice get an HD re-release. Or just a regular re-release.
Though I’m not holding my breath.
You're not gonna believe this
Roberto is from Brasil. Brasilians love so much football (soccer), so he is a Brazilian goalkeeper as an exchange student in Japan. He is there, because he plays for a local Japanese high school football club.
29:38 That bit of dodgework looks lovely
I love this game. There were sooo many great fighter's made!!!
"That's not fair, they have a sword" I mean Akira is entering fist fights in full Biker Gear and a Helmet, i think weapons are fair game at this point.
Kyosuke is my favorite all time character because that’s who I was in high school. I almost got into a fight with football team because the art club scheduled an event first in the gym and the football team wanted a pep Talley I said no almost got jumped for it. In my idiot brain I thought since I played street fighter and rival schools I could fight thank goodness for their gf for breaking it up before it could get started.
In that moment, you were an anime protagonist.
I was lucky that I found that the arcade I go to has Project Justice. It's so good! Can't wait for Akira to come out on the 16th.
16:19 is my favorite tag team super in all of fighting games, so iconic
30:18 My artist senses come out with this picture of akira, if you turn her eye color pale blue, she becomes jill valentine. But if you turn her hair color blonde and change her eye to a very light gray blue, she turns into android 18.
One of my all time faves. Loved Evo with all the unlockable chars and mini games. Spent so many hours playing rs.
This is awesome I saw this in a game store tournament and always thought it was cool
2:02 well DAIGO KAZAMA is THE BIG BOSS because he voiced by Akio Otsuka aka snake from MGS3
Took me until adulthood to appreciate cool characters like Akira; as a kid, I just played as Hyo...
When Capcom care about other fighting games good old days
god I love these old PS1 capcom aestetics so much
I love these Gedo punks. Toughies on the outside, softie on the inside.
6:25 is the theme you're all looking for, people
Nostalgia overload...
I loved this game when I was in my teens, long time ago haha. Nice to bring it back
I didn't play this one but I did play Rival Schools 2 and the other Rival Schools game after it. 2 was definitely a favorite of mine (might have been due to having character creation and managing to have my character learn one of Daigo's moves).
In my wildest dreams I thought my most beloved PS1 fighting franchise would get some internet love. So much nostalgia, so much extra content in 1.5 version also.
29:37 sick looking dodge
Leon Kennedy with Ken and terry bogard moves lol
11:49 Ken Bogard/Terry Masters haha. Maybe because of another one of those mutual jokes between capcom and snk?
I absolutely loved Rival schools as a kid. So pumped that my favorite of the bunch os gonna be playable in a game again. Awesome that you chose edge as a secondary also.
Yes!! More attention must be brought to this game! You gonna do Project Justice next?
He did
What about rival schools 2 on the ps1
And Akira goes back to her all girls school and gets a gang of her own in the sequel.
I wonder if the biker costume will also have a deeper voice in SFV
I loved playing this game so much uuuugghhh the feels rival schools was so good
I really love the skullman influence on Akira's biker gear
The theme reminds me a lot of the likes of Evil Zone and Tech Romancer, this is a game I wanted to play in my childhood but only ever had the demo. :(
