back in the long ago, I was a cook at a small town diner that had a daily soup special. Always scratch made. The greatest compliment I ever received in my cooking career was when a regular asked if there was any of yesterday's navy bean soup left over.

I know this is 3 years old, but, I followed this recipe today. My first time making Bean with Ham Soup, and I’ve received so many positive comments, I’m half expecting Robert Irvine or Gordon Ramsey to come busting through the door wanting to put it on their menu. Thanks for all of the great videos!!!
My Mom made navy beans soup two or three times in the winter she did put carrots in it, but I really like the way you boiled the beans and eliminated the need for soaking over night, thanks for the tip. It looks great.
Made this tonight. I did add a bay leaf out of habit when I make a soup. I garnished with hickory smoked bacon and diced green onion. It was absolutely delicious. Made jalapeño cornbread to go along for the ride..... I like this channel. Down to earth guy I feel like I could drink a beer with and talk about cooking.
That's how I cooked it! Bacon and green onion on top - yum. I added 1 small shredded carrot for color, and cornbread with real corn bits in it, home made butter.
I'd like to make my version of his chili for him with about 15 beers. I add hit italian sausage in the mix and use different beans. His collards are the only way I do them too
Of all the cooks and chefs on UA-cam, watching you do your thing feels much more authentic, like something we can do any day of the week and have no problem doing it how you do. LOVE these videos, and looking forward to trying this recipe as it get cold out!
Hi, AB. I'm a first timer. Simple, basic, rustic ingredients = comfort food. Similar to split pea soup, substituting the navy beans. Cold winters and your soup with cornbread, pure heaven. ALSO, very nutritious! Thanks pal.
Navy bean soup is so delicious ! Southern girl here, love all beans, peas & legumes ! I Cook them with smoked meat & andouille sausage ! They are a complete meal packed protein, B-complex vitamins like folates, pyridoxine, thiamin (vitamin B-1), pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and niacin. Healthy & Deliciousness upon deliciousness !
@@JohnDavis-yz9nq They have a lot of Andouille Sausages to choose from at your H-E-B in TX. That's where I was just buying mine from. I like the Northern Beans because of the size.
That looks delicious! I never cared for beans most my 60+ years of life. But now it's a favorite! Smoked ham shank really makes for appetizing aroma and flavor. I just recently bought a bottle of Hickory flavored liquid smoke. Cornbread muffins are perfect with bean soup. I like to add sweet corn and cheddar cheese to my cornbread recipe....im getting hungry!
I have never made northern beans before, usually it’s pinto beans in my house. But I had my leftover ham bone from thanksgiving and a bag of northern beans so decided to try your recipe because it had liquid smoke and I love that stuff! Came out absolutely delicious! Thanks for sharing 😃
I made this dish, this Friday and it turned out perfect the slow cooking is what does it. Fall off the bone like you said, the meat peeled right off the bone. I used liquid smoke for the first time making beans and I also used the trinity Onions, celery, and green peppers. My daughter and her husband thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Thank you good cooking and good eating. Have a good day 😅
I’m making this in the crockpot tomorrow, it’s snowing here and this will be perfect for the weather with some cornbread and collard greens on the side. I trust his work, I’ve tried several recipes and it’s always amazing. I hope to see a cookbook soon.
This brings back memories of my mother making this in the '50s! I have been making it ever since. Very homey and comforting! And yes, definitely have to have cornbread with it. And I am a Southern "California" gal. Thanks AB
This navy bean and ham soup is absolutely out of this world!! We all loved it. I made my first pot (DBL batch) last week and I’m making another one today. I have been blessing people with this soup for dinner and they all love it. My husband and I cannot wait to check out more of your recipes AB, 😋 Thanks for making it simple and so tasty.
I love this recipe. Just a few changes. I use the "trinity -- onion, green pepper & celery" sauteed first and added to beans and use Andouille and or Tasso Ham & Cajun seasoning.
I cook for my kids and grandkids. I used this recipe and it turned out really delicious, and even my 2 year old grandson liked it. I used smoked turkey legs which I smoked on my smoker. I'll do this one again for sure. I don't know that I've ever seen a two year old eating beans like this...Great video AB!
Love the look of those beans....going to make this today! This really brings back great memories. I grew up on beans. Many of our suppers consisted of beans, fat back and fried cornbread. Washed down with ice cold tea. Many thanks for the recipe!
Good recipe - I've been making and eating this (almost identical) for decades. Only difference is I split and chop one medium carrot to go with the celery and onion, and I smush the beans a little. Make the cornbread while the soup is cookin', and you don't need anything else for dinner… Yum! Made me hungry just to watch the video!

I just made me a pot exactly like you said, with a Christmas ham hock, and it may be the most delicious dish I've ever made. Just as yummy as it looks!
I've made Ham and Bean soup for years!! My Favorite. I always use liquid smoke, but I also always add carrots. I take out about a cup of soup at the end and blend it with a stick blender to thicken the soup. Can't imagine having this soup with out cornbread.
Got my ham bone got my liquid smoke got my veggies, got my navy beans & stock 👍. I’m all in tomorrow morning. Thx 🙏. A little bit of fibre before the Xmas food coma. Best recipe.
Made this first time over weekend. Very good, i added chopped carrots and used minced garlic. Also used costco 1/4 ham i had frozen a year ago, and honey baked hambone. That liquid smoke really gives it that extra kick
Made this a second time using 4 smoked turkey winglets(near as big as drumsticks). I think it came out better than the hame(which was great), also a cheaper and slightly healthier option than the ham
It freezer great too. I love to cook. My Mom great cook. She made fabulous pies. I have never found anyone who could beat her on her pie baking. She was from south.
AB you're my favorite UA-cam chef. I didn't like white beans growing up. Hated seeing them for dinner knowing I'd have to eat them. This recipe is full of flavor, so thank you. I added two more small ingredient to mine, a finely diced potato (will desolve) and a 1/2 teaspoon of powdered cloves. Delicious. Paired this with cornbread and sweet tea.
this is delicious. i changed one thing to the recipe. i put it in fridge after about 1 1/2 hours. let it sit overnight and then took it out to skim the grease off the top. put it back on the stove for another 1 1/2 hours. some of you may like all the fat but i don't like greasy soup.

@@kelleybright3113it sure can be. Depending on the ingredients. Hot water cornbread is made with hot water and cornmeal and a little sugar, only. Regular cornbread fried is made with all the ingredients that's on a package of cornbread and has milk in it. I love to make both!!!! Lol

Meal to me.....cornbread with butter and honey on the side.....perfection. Sometimes I make this with smoked turkey wings or legs if I don't have a ham bone. I make with the celery and onions and no carrots also! Lots of pepper too maybe splashy of hot sauce too.
I use shredded carrots,no celery, never have used chicken broth.I’ve never needed to add flavor, because my big ham bone gives the soup all the flavor. But,I do add a special little flavor, than an older Lady told me to do,50 years ago,and My bean soup over 50 years has been delicious! Add: 1-2 TB of ketchup! Color ,flavor adds a lot.
AB, that is some fine lookin' soup! I've been planning something like this since Christmas (oh yeah, you know I saved that ham bone). I'll follow your recipe (I do love me some Liquid Smoke..hickory)...I think THAT will be the secret ingredient. Thanks for doing these videos, I LOVE 'em!

Just made this 1/15/23 using smoked Turkey leg. Followed recipe including 1/2 tsp liquid smoke Absolutely delicious! Even better the second day. Thanks Will definitely be making again
For those asking if you can make it in a crock pot... you surely can! It's all about the slow cook/ simmer once you combine all of the ingredients. I've followed this recipe before in the crock pot & it turned out awesome. I currently have the crock pot cooking in the van! Oh, and it's currently 45 degrees inside the van, so I'll increase the cook time a bit.

I have never used your method for rehydrating the beans until now and I like it a lot. I think the beans absorb more flavor using your method. Thank you for sharing this 👩🏼🍳❤️
By itself with cornbread!!!! A meal in itself. Awesome 👏🏻
Yep yep!
I wouldn’t have changed a thing. It was so good I could smell it through the computer.
Lol Thank you and enjoy Susan :)
yummy i think we need SMELLAVISION on this one
Thanks for another good meal to try during these winter months here in New England. I also use Liquid Smoke when I smoke some pork shoulders. I dilute about one tablespoon of Liquid Smoke to 2 cups of water then inject the solution into the pork shoulders before they go in the smoker for 9 hours. No complaints from the family. Thanks again
Made the ham and bean with a twist. I found a new go to for my leftover smoked pulled pork. It was amazing.
I fix mine with skillet fried cornbread!!! Looks so good AB!!!! You've done it again. Thank you so much 😍
I need to do some Skillet Fried Cornbread. Great idea and Thank you Terri :)
@@SmokinandGrillinwithAB you're welcome!! #soulfoodsister
Is that called hot water corn bread.
My granny said
@@kelleybright3113it sure can be. Depending on the ingredients. Hot water cornbread is made with hot water and cornmeal and a little sugar, only. Regular cornbread fried is made with all the ingredients that's on a package of cornbread and has milk in it. I love to make both!!!! Lol
Aw yeah, grew up on that and still love it when I make it!! Over some rice and cornbread on the side, life be good!! And iced tea of course..
In my area you can find Liquid Smoke with the steak sauce. Never seen dry beans cooked this way. Gonna try. I have all ingredients except for ham but I do have 2 smoked turkey legs. Thanks 4 sharing.
Smoked Turkey Legs will work perfectly! Enjoy!

My mom use to make a killer Navy bean ham soup. She passed in 2016 and I've missed her and her soup. I've been looking to re create her soup. I'm going to try this. This may be it! Thank you
Hey AB when I was a kid my mom made bean & ham soup 🍲 😋 and put homemade egg noodles in it and made corn bread with it talk about bringing back memories thanks 😊 ☺️ 🙂 👍
Make a pan of cornbread and that's a wrap!!
Lol I see you already know! Thank you Brenda :)
That's a fact AB 4 office
Yep
Meal to me.....cornbread with butter and honey on the side.....perfection. Sometimes I make this with smoked turkey wings or legs if I don't have a ham bone. I make with the celery and onions and no carrots also! Lots of pepper too maybe splashy of hot sauce too.
Yes we need you to make a cookbook! Love your cooking
I’m making this tomorrow for Sunday dinner along with fried chicken
I use shredded carrots,no celery, never have used chicken broth.I’ve never needed to add flavor, because my big ham bone gives the soup all the flavor. But,I do add a special little flavor, than an older Lady told me to do,50 years ago,and My bean soup over 50 years has been delicious! Add: 1-2 TB of ketchup! Color ,flavor adds a lot.
I see this in my near future with a skillet of cornbread. Mmm good eating!!
Have it with the cornbread, Ham & Bean soup with just the cornbread is delicious, nothing else.
I love Navy bean soup. Looking forward to trying this. Southern style cooking should be amazing.
oooweeeee Lawd !!! Corn bread muffin oh yes !! This is my kind of cold day meal ..Mr.AB you the bomb
Thank you :) It's raining here too! Enjoy :)
I make mine exactly like you but add diced carrots!!! Good job brother!!!! Liquid smoke is right on man!!!! I’m making two pots right now! One pot for me and the family and the other for my boys at the office!! Love your channel!!!!!❤
My Mom made Navy Bean soup all of the time. Your recipe is so similar! We always had it with corn bread. Can't wait to try your recipe.
Have you ever done a split pea soup??????
If not I would love for you to do one on a split pea soup ❤️❤️🤤🤤🤤
I've made it twice and that's a good idea. Thanks John for the suggestion :)
I love split pea🤤🤤🤤
I've only done split pea soup with ham bone.. I use both the green split peas and the yellow. Split peas. Plenty meat always left on my ham bone...
It would be the same thing, just with split peas...lmao...lmao
Just made this 1/15/23 using smoked Turkey leg. Followed recipe including 1/2 tsp liquid smoke
Absolutely delicious! Even better the second day.
Thanks
Will definitely be making again
Yes sir, I'm from the south and this looks like Memphis cooking to me.
Damn near started licking my phone!!! Definitely going to try making this.
Lol 😆
For those asking if you can make it in a crock pot... you surely can! It's all about the slow cook/ simmer once you combine all of the ingredients. I've followed this recipe before in the crock pot & it turned out awesome. I currently have the crock pot cooking in the van! Oh, and it's currently 45 degrees inside the van, so I'll increase the cook time a bit.
I'm new to using a crock pot so silly question, I just add all the ingredients and cook? So low 6 hours ish?
@@michellehawkins1027 yes! Just cook the beans as he outlined
@@Forgvn.Adventures Thank you..
Ok A.B. every real cook knows to save the ham bone for pinto and navy beans.
And the shell from the shrimps
@@CharleneWithrow and chicken tips and backs.
Way over the top look up Michigan Senate Bean soup no liquid smoke sever with Jiffy mix corn muffins with a dollop of hard butter then a shot of Irish whiskey finish shoveling the snow off the driveway. When fast asleep oooh between 4and5AM look out for the snow PLOW🤓♥️

AB bean soup by it self with just some cornbread or buttered bread I have eaten this soup ever since I was a kid my mom fixed it for my father because she did not think us kids would like it well let me tell you I had 3 brothers and 3 sisters at the time and I’ll be honest most of them did not care for bean soup they must be insane but I and 1 of my brothers and 1 sister loved it but especially me my mom could not believe I would like it and when I got married my wife went out of her way to make sure she prepared it properly and I’ll tell you she did a fabulous job she put every bit of her heart into making it for me and seeing your video of how to make it really brings warm memories to me thanks for your recipe site I really love it 👍😁😊
Only thing you need to serve that with is a spoon.
a good lager would help too
And hot sauce!
