  • This example uses the linear equation y = -1/3 x - 2 to demonstrate graphing from slope intercept form.
    Slope Intercept form is:
    y = mx + b
    m = slope
    b = y-intercept
    In the example:
    y = -1/3x - 2
    m = slope = -1/3
    b = y-intercept = -2

      To look at x + y = - 3 in slope intercept form subtract x from each side. This gives y = - x - 3. Note that this is equivalent to y = - 1 /1 x + (- 3). Therefore the slope is -1/1 and the y-intercept is - 3.
