- After you run out of Diesel in your Tractor the easiest way is to Bleed the Fuel System.
Raise the hood and secure .
On the left hand side ( looking from the front )
You will see the final filter/ water separator
I 've had to prime the same tractor once before when I ran it out of diesel and after a lot of time and perhaps some tears I got it, and swore I'd never let that happen again and haven't! He changed out the fuel filter due to it being old and cracked and was leaking and has been trying to get it started for over an hour. I could not remember for sure how to prime it, but as soon as I watched you get it started it all came back to me. I walked out there, grabbed the screw driver opened it up and pumped it a few times. Closed it, pumped it about 15 times and tried to start it. Pumped it a couple times while cranking it and it started right up. I thought he was gonna fall over! It was AWESOME! Thanks for making this video and for making me a bad ass! LOL...I'm sure all his failed attempts helped but I'm not telling him.
😂you go girl.
Education is the best.
Well done for wanting to learn.
👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks mate! Had the same problem with my 4720. Needed three attempts as well. Had already done it twice and thought I had more serious issues. Third time was a charm. Thanks again.
Jim Binger glad it helped.👍🏽
HUURRRAAYYY! It started! Man. Took a while to find this just what I needed video. Thank you. 5045e
jthepickle7 glad it helped 😁
Thanks!!!!!! Left the drain open too long while draining water and air went inside the separator. Took 4 bleeds but fired up.
Good result.
Thanks for the info 👍🏽
Perfect ! saved me, Thanks ,love my 4520 also Florida Citrus county !
Thanks for your input 👍🏽
Great post. I am getting an ERR201 on my 4720. I plan to replace filter and follow your steps.
Stephen Parsons good call . Hope all goes well. Let me know how you get on.👍🏽
@@wolfeman1966 Used your technique. It went well!
Stephen Parsons thanks for letting me know .👍🏽
You save my life bro. Thankyou
Hope it wasn’t that dramatic, but glad it helped.
😂👍🏽
I usually break the injector lines to see that the diesel has made it there and let the air out of the line. But this seemed to work out without all that
That interesting 🤔
I glad it worked for you👍🏽
Thank you :) your utube helps a ton
S Bromley Thanks for letting me know.👍🏽
Sure appreciate quick explanations on error codes and fixes on 4520 ehydro!!!
DAVID SIMONAK glad to be of assistance..👍🏽
Have you had to replace the fuel gague sending unitin the tank? My 4720 constantly show the tank as empty when the tank is full to the neck. If you have any experience with the sending unit replacement, any insights would be appreciated. ( Especially, how to get to the sender to remove ti )
Jim Binger no I haven’t..BUT funny u say that , mine is the same..🤔
I’ve often thought I should find out why.
Maybe I could do that in a week or so...👍🏽
I have a problem with the fuel gauge on my 4720. It never goes below half. I plan to work around by simply fueling every 5 hours or so.
Works fine! Cheers mate 👍
Our 4720 and our smaller John Deere tractors all have problems with fuel gauges, you'd think it'd get sorted at the design stage!?... Either that or we'd check fuel proper before going out 🤣
Stay safe, Andy
Andy Steuart that’s for letting me know......stay safe
yep our guage was repaired immediately under warranty but flops all over the place. Why I looked up this vid! LOL Is your tachometer also malfunctioning with an inacurrate read out?
the manual says too bleed it daily of water is this really necessary and do you have to do the whole process shown on video or just let out some water/diesel from plug?
I have only ever done it twice in 7/8 years
So I would say not.
It may depend on which state you live in or country with regards to the weather.
I use my tractor now nearly every day.
My JD 4520 compact reads low fuel when the tank is full on the gauge and I just filled it , and it runs fine ?
Common problem.
Once I replaced the censor behind the back left Tier looking from the back,
It cleared the problem as well as code error 06 .
Check my video on the code error 06
👍🏽🤔
What year is your tractor? Any idea if its a common rail or mechanical fuel pump?
Unfortunately this did NOT work for me. I'm happy it worked for so many others on this thread. I have a 4600 JD tractor. Recently replaced the fuel filter and ever since then I just can't get it to start. Before reading this post I've had times when it ran for 15 to 30 seconds but then just did not stay running (this after I just let the tractor sit for a week). Anyway, I clamped the hose has instructed in this video - kept tightening/squeezing it more and more but then started worrying I was going to damage the rubber fuel line. (btw - I have a full tank of diesel). Alas, I may have to go the expensive route of shipping it off to the local tractor garage. :(
Any suggestions are welcome.
😢 🗜 the hose..???
What hose and why??
Release any water and partial’s from the bottom of the fuel filter, open the plastic screw next to the top and pump the top plunger… this helps get rid of any air in the fuel pump.
Close the plastic screw and continue pumping try 15/20 times.
Then start the tractor 🚜
If it starts then cuts off , keep turning the key and keep pumping the fuel until it start.
Patience is a virtue👍🏽👍🏽
Let me know how it goes 🤔
@@wolfeman1966 Whoops - I replied to the wrong video. :/ I've now watched your video but my fuel filter (JD4600) is much different than on your JD4520. I don't have a pump on the top of my fuel filter. I'll take another look and see what I can do.
Hi I have the same tractor. Have you ever had the problem where the RPM keep jumping and won't stay steady
Watch my video .
This happened to me and after I resolved this fault, it cleared many other problems.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Let me know how it goes please.

thanx very much mate
jindabalsofipindia your so welcome Pal..👍🏽😊
i had truble today and i watch ur video and fix my john deere
Where is the other fuel filter. I was able to find and change the fuel filter you showed, but I can't find the other one. Any ideas?
Matt Seiling will check tomorrow 👍🏽
Sounds good. Hopefully you can find it :)
Matt Seiling there’s one large next to the inner front side of your back right side tire, under your bucket arm stick.
The other is the one you probably know, left side of the engine next to dipstick, starter.👍🏽
Hope that helps
The first one you mentioned is the hydraulic fluid filter. The other one is the oil filter. I found the one fuel filter on the right side, but nothing else for fuel filters.
Matt Seiling ok i know which video this is about now.
It’s called the Final Filter/ for the fuel.
It’s the right side of the engine if you are on the seat under the hood.👍🏽
👌🏻 John deere
My fuel doesn't get to filter.
Check your pipeline
I had the same problem on a diesel compressor.
I changed the fuel filter and cleaned out the pipes, clogged up😬
Started straight away.
A lot of them have a screen inside the tank also that gets clogged
