Running a diesel tractor out of fuel and bleeding air out of the fuel system!

- Happens to everyone. Well, at least everyone who wrenches on old junk with faulty fuel gauges and leaky fuel tanks. Fortunately it's a quick and easy fix.

I don't understand these videos. Take the air filter out spray wd40 into the air intake and the engine will run on it until it clears the air and you are finished.
@@jamesbrooks7782 I don’t think you understand how fuel plungers work. They simply don’t pump air. Your experience seems to be with gasoline engines or newer diesels that are capable of self bleeding. Older and simpler stuff isn’t. You could crank this engine with starting fluid until it ether locks or the lack of lubricity breaks something, but it’s simply not going to bleed the air out.
@@drewdoestrucks in 1995 I repowered my sport fishing boat with 2 3176 Caterpillar engines.
The diesel mechanic showed me that trick. I've used it on my farm tractors, my trackhoe, my backhoe and my boat. I have also started friends farm tractors with it.
Wd40 is oil it will not score cylinders.
It has always worked for me.

I’ve got a New Holland TC40DA that came with some property I just bought. I didn’t realize the fuel gauge didn’t work and I ran out of fuel. Will this process work on this tractor?
Yeah it should they are fairly mechanically simple. Only run into issues on newer common rail stuff.
We burned the starter up in my new Holland boomer 40 after my son ran it out of fuel trying to bleed everything. We STILL cannot get it started and I'm scared to death of burning up the new $300 starter. Can't even move it to get it on a trailer to a shop because the bucket is down. I feel so screwed. Any advice??
"Whether it's got three cylinders or eight." Yup, and how about one - - wait for it: and it's hand crank (rope)? One person to wrap the rope around the pulley and another to crack open and shut the pump bleed bolt and injector nut? Several times. Anyone done this?
It's a Hatz E75 on a Clowez dumper. Ran great when it started but fuel line replacement and in-tank filter replacement and nozzle replacement mean purge necessary. And according to the book air in system is the only suspect when it won't start.
I don’t have any experience with that motor. Does it have a nut on the crank pulley? I would be awfully tempted to use a 1/2 impact bit chucked into a sturdy variable speed drill and crack the line while spinning the motor with the drill.
I have a 1990 vintage excavator with a mitsubishi diesel engine. It ran fine right up until I thought I would change the fuel filters. No start. Now seemed like a good time to change all of the fuel lines and return lines. I've bled the fuel lines going to the injector pump. I cracked the injector lines at the injectors (all at the same time) and cranked the engine until fuel was dripping out of each line. I tightened them back up and still no start. I will try bleeding each line individually like you did. Im thinking if I have a bubble in the line somewhere, the bubble gets compressed by the pulse of the pump and the injector doesnt actually spray any fuel?
These older injectors are very simple and they are not “self bleeding” like some newer ones are which means if you get an air bubble big enough, you can crank them until the battery runs dead and it may never bleed on its own. Did you fill the new filters with fuel prior to bleeding the system?

I have 2005 Ford and run of diesel. Now, I can't get it to run. it's start and turns
6.0 has self bleeding injectors. Crack the fuel filter and key on until it starts to fill. Then crank until it starts. Don’t crank starter for more than 20 seconds at a time and give it a minute between attempts. Use a battery charger to keep voltage up. It should start again.

Why would a guy let their tractor run out of diesel fuel? Most newer tractors have fuel gauges that work. Seems so simple to fuel up. I have a 1968 Massey Ferguson 175 that has never ran dry. Weird??????
I don't think anyone does it on purpose but whether it's a bad fuel gauge, leaky tank, off camber hill, or just working so hard you don't notice, it certainly is a very common occurrence.
Glad to hear you have never made a mistake. I aspire to your levels of perfection. It happened because both my wife and I use the tractor. I left it full and didn't realize she ran it low. 20 Minutes in I ran out. Thought I had a full tank. Now I know to check it before I start working.
