    For you young guys that don't know about Doc, this is a very old Dr. J at 35 years old. Far beyond his prime to be dunking in a contest.

    They should allow you to replace a missed dunk to encourage more difficult dunks. Dr. J won this contest if it wasn't for the missed dunk. He should have had an opportunity to replace the miss.

      +EULISS BENOIT Are you kidding me? Michael had a 48 inch vertical, and made the freethrow line dunk his own by double clutching his feet creating a flying motion from even further back than Dr J when all he did was just get the bal in the rim. You're biased! Michael's freethrow line dunk was on another level, and he originated the kiss the rim dunk, and many other dunks. How can you not include one of if not the greatest showman ever. Name one dunk that Jordan stole from Dr J. Jordan landed dunks that the Doc couldn't even attempt. Jordan had a 48 inch vertical compared to Dr J's 41 inch, and Dominique's 42 verticals. He had over 6 inches on both of them. Jordan jumped, and glided side ways, and had to duck his head from hitting the rim as he went under, and over the rim with the right hand slam. The degree of difficulty on Jordan's dunks compared to Dr J's were astronomical. Jordan was a better player than anyone you mentioned, and just look at his top 50 plays. He was the ultimate showman. Wilkin's wasn't on his level as a player, or showman when it comes to games. Jordan did things that none of them did. I can read you quote's from Magic,Bird,West,and Wilkins on Jordan. Jordan loved the Doctor, but he didn't have half the arsenal that Jordan had

    • @joshpotts6316
      @joshpotts6316 8 років тому

      EULISS BENOIT I don't worship no man. You've sadly mistaken my character. The truth is that Michael is an egotistic, compulsive gambling, complete jerk. He charges people 200 dollars for shoes that only cost 30 dollars to make. He is obsessed with vanity, and only cares about himself. No man on Earth is worth worshipping. He's a puppet picked by the elite to be glorified for something as basic as playing a game. Worshiping a person like him is as sad as the people who go around playing Pokémon go.

    Dr J dunks are very difficult he makes them look easy. They used a wheel to spin and the dunker had to copy the dunk Dr J had done in the past and Gerald Wallace was a great dunker but his dunk did not look.good at all.

  • @presgeeztv9603
    @presgeeztv9603 9 років тому

    If you had a vs dunk contest from the past players & now. This generation will win because they discovered more creativity. Most of these dunks they did back then, players can do it IN-GAME now.

    • @Swove2204
      @Swove2204  9 років тому +11

      I am uncertain if "discovered more creativity" would be the correct phrasing. Perhaps more accurately, today's generation has wisely benefited from the creative steps taken by all those who came before. The realm of what's believed to be possible is vastly different from the way it used to be, and it's almost entirely because of everyone who's paved the way.
      For instance, Jordan's likely not cocking back from the free throw line without Julius Erving setting the stage. Brent Barry's not likely taking off from the free throw line without Jordan & Erving setting the stage. James White is likely not windmilling without Barry, Jordan, and Erving setting the stage. And Serge Ibaka's likely not taking off from behind the free throw line without White, Barry, Jordan, and Erving setting the stage.
      Dunking is essentially a series of rolling benchmarks. The biggest difference between players then and players now is players then didn't have the benefit of seeing the dunk evolve in the manner it did, largely thanks to their own performances.

      @fatdan_95 8 років тому +1

      +Prestin Son Such a horrible argument. Am I smarter than Issac Newton because I took a college course on particle physics which he would have known nothing about?
      1. Dunk contest culture has changed greatly, these dunks were basically all impromptu, while Zach Lavine has been rehearing his dunks since he was at Bothell High School (I went to that school when he was there).
      2. Athletic trainers constantly come up with supplementary exercises to help athletes with functional strength to aid in jumping higher, running faster, etc.
      3. Today's athletes have access to the information grid. They can find something online and try to replicate it and learn different techniques. Aaron Gordon wasn't the first to do that dunk, I've seen others on youtube do it.
      4. Have you ever seen Shawn Kemp or Dominique Play? Hardly anyone today would dare to dunk like that IN TRAFFIC.
      You can't just plop someone back in time. If you want to compare players of different eras, it is only fair to focus on their innovation, creativity, and legacy, NOT their athletic ability. Players today are NOT more creative simply more athletic, but that's just a product of their time so its relative. Doctor J, for example was as good as anybody when it came to relentless attack of the basket and finishing with grace around the rim. That's what sets him apart. He is responsible for elevating Basketball from simply competition to sports entertainment. The entire sport progresses and their are a few people every generation who help elevate the game to the next level (Mikan, Petit, Cousy in the 50s, Wilt, Rusell, Baylor, Big O in the 60s, Kareem, Doctor J, Pistol in the 70s, Magic and Bird in the 80s, Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and many more that I haven't mentioned). Without all these guys the NBA would never have progressed and Today's players wouldn't now anything, we would all be waiting around for the next great talent to reshape the game.

      Understand, when Dr. J and a lot of players came to the NBA, or were admitted, from the now defunct ABA, they were already peaking, or playing later in their careers. They didn' t have the benefit of playing in their early twenties like players today. This footage is an older Julius Erving still kicking butt. Not many players could fly through the air like he did back then. There was an HBO documentary about the ABA, and its black players that many were afraid to play against. Check it out! Ciao!
