      He was the main reason why I watched basketball. He's still my favorite basketball player of all time. It's sad that he never got credit for his defense. Most people don't realize that those spectacular dunks were usually the end result of a steal or blocked shot by the Doctor.

    Thank you sir for pointing that out. I was blessed because I watched him play during my teenage years in the early 80s. People don't realize that those amazing dunks that he did were from him playing serious defense like getting steals and blocking shots. He has more class in his Converser shoestrings than most players today have in their entire body.

Signed every autograph for every fan. Coolest dude ever. Class. He also crammed one over Tree Rollins that night that was spectacular.

    in these early 'sixers years footage, one thing that really stands out is how far erving could jump from the basket and dunk with guys hanging all over him, and with incredibe ease..one was from 12 ft. out...I've seen a '78 clip where he took-off from "thirteen" feet out and dunk over some guy..i kid u not, I wouldn't be surprised if erving could made a dunk from the foul-line with guys trying to block the shot..in his physical prime, "nobody" could leap from so far out with guys all over him..

    One of the smartest basketball players on the court. His defense was always incredible, constantly stealing the ball. But his greatest gift was going coast to coast. As soon as he got the ball, no matter where he was on the court, he felt like he was in scoring position, lol. Once he got to full speed, nobody could stop him. And I mean nobody. He would jump however high he needed to to clear the defender by a foot. And what a great man, competitor and ambassador for the game. One of the classiest professional athletes of all time. The Doctor was the inspiration for every child Gen Xer back in the day. Jordan became the icing on the cake.

    MJ might be the overall GOAT but Dr J is the best dunker of all time. The hang time, the electrifying moves, the graceful takeoff and the high elevation floating layup is a beautiful sight to behold. In fact it is evident that some of these moves MJ adopted and improvised came from Dr J's playbook. He was the first true box-office NBA entertainer then came Magic, Bird, MJ and the rest.

    I remember the Blazers/76ers series well and there is no doubt that Julius was the most exciting and entertaining player at the time (I think he was even better with the Nets). However, I was rooting for the Blazers to win because they played team basketball with Walton, in a rare healthy year, as the center piece. Walton was such a great center when healthy and he had a great year and won the MVP. The Sixers had more overall talent but they often played disjointed and selfishly. It would have nice to see Doc play with a team that was more focused on playing together.

    • @PorkFrog
      @PorkFrog 8 років тому

      I just rewatched the series...George McGinnis didn't show up at all until Game 6, literally shot less than 60 PERCENT fouls...this is a shooter and a top scorer who can barely make half his foul shots, he's in such a horrible slump..
      .Doug Collins, now Collins played well until McGinnis shows up for game 6, then Collins plays for shit and disappears...Dr J wasn't a one man gang completely, but for long stretches, it was J vs the Blazers, who were a beter dfensive and rebounding team. At times, with Walton, Maurice Lucas, Lionel Hollins, and Bobby Gross, the Blazers played suffocating defense. And against a team already struggling offensively, that is deadly. Then throw in control of the boards so the Sixers cannot break for easy baskets, and have a poor outside shooting team taking outside shots[Bibby and McGinnis in particular were awful].
      The first two games the Sixers won, the Blazers played flat and unaggressive, but after Game 2's famous Lucas/Dawkins fight, they played like animals And they shot extremely well. Just the better, more intelligent team. I also heard that after Dawkins accidentally busted Doug Collins eye before getting sucker-punched by Lucas in the back of the head, the Sixers lockerroom was a mess, with Dawkins complaining about no one having his back against Lucas...just another nail in the coffin...even still,even with three Blazers' blowouts, a memorable and good series.
      As for Erving, definitely not his fault they got beat...Julius's stat line for the series
      30.3 Points 6.8 rebounds 5,0 Assists 2,7 steals 1.2 blocks

    Without the old ABA footage when Julius was in his physical prime you miss alot but he was a player who would attack the rim every chance he had thats what great scorers do. He had a nice jumper which had to be respected and that opened space between him and defense. He had a great first step. But the drive and dunk seemed to work pretty well so he kept going back to that.Some players are timeless and would dominate no matter when they played despite what you kids think

  • @edscottable
    @edscottable 11 років тому

    dr j dunked so routinely. every move he made ended up the rim. the back down and then spin and jam on walton, i've never even seen seven footers do that to a prime bill walton.

    • @JohnKing-fb7gr
      @JohnKing-fb7gr 5 років тому

      Thank you for bringing that out! 95% of most jams today are not really contested and definitely not on 7footers like the Doctor did. That dunk on Walton showed the difference why he was so great- Walton had all the time and position to set up defensively yet it didn't matter, the 6'7" forward has superior leaping, body control, and massive hands that overcame every defensive player on a fast break situation like no other ABA or NBA player before or since.

One of them isn't here: a vicious dunk on a fastbreak in Dave Cowens' face n Game 7. The Sixer home crowd went crazy and the Celtics had to call a time-out. It's often put among his Top 10 dunks.

    Dr J ( in my opinion ) have one of the most beautiful moves aka handle of the ball in the history of basketball... I mean, whenever he does that one handed move of holding the ball with his huge hand, swooping it around without even touching the ball with his off hand, and either dunk it or lay it in..is literally poetry in motion...To this day ( correct me if I'm wrong ) but I have not seen any greats ever do that..I'm sure some might have done it once here and there..but Dr J does it with beautiful ease, and he seems to do it often..where it's so natural for him.. My favorite player EVER..the DOCTOR !!

      Yeah, Doc in 84 was way past his prime but you could still see his greatness. That's why I say it's not fair to compare players from different Eras. What if Doc had grown up seeing:
      Curry, LeBron and Kobe?
      Watched film of Jordan and Dominique? Had access to the traning and conditioning of today's players? After 6 years and two championship like he had in the ABA, the would laying the GOAT title on him in today's NBA!
