Julius Erving - Hang Time

- Julius Erving is one of the most exciting players in NBA history. With hang time moves, great poster dunks and open court plays, Dr. J won over the fans and the entire league. In this 17 minute highlight video you can clearly see how good of an athlete Erving was. Exhibition of greatness.
I'm glad that fans who were too young to see Dr. J get a chance to see possibly the greatest, most exciting basketball player in history.
He was the main reason why I watched basketball. He's still my favorite basketball player of all time. It's sad that he never got credit for his defense. Most people don't realize that those spectacular dunks were usually the end result of a steal or blocked shot by the Doctor.
@@angelomccurdy ^^^^yup^^^^ his ability to read the offense to get a steal & to have the speed to outrun everyone down the court for a majestic air gliding, fan eruption slam!!!
@@angelomccurdy greatest 2 way player who wasn’t a big man ever by far. Top 5 all time easily Greatest all around small forward ever
I agree with this comment section
Juicelius Ewing.
Dr.Julius Erving the real Air apparent 🏀 One of the greatest player’s ever.
By far the most exciting player in the open court, and the greatest small forward ever.
ShangoDC - you've hit the nail right on the head!!
ShangoDC yes indeed
Jonathan Taylor Yes Sirrr
This comment didn’t age well
@Isaiah Lucas Elgin is definitely open for debt. If you put Elgin in a modern context he might be the greatest small ever.
I'm pretty sure the Doctor dunked on every hof center of his generation which by the way were legends.
Excellent point....perhaps only Wilt would have been able to stop him, but Doc had no fear...no matter who the future HoF center was.
Thank you sir for pointing that out. I was blessed because I watched him play during my teenage years in the early 80s. People don't realize that those amazing dunks that he did were from him playing serious defense like getting steals and blocking shots. He has more class in his Converser shoestrings than most players today have in their entire body.
Everyone overlooked his defense you're right.
Simply the best of perhaps any generation!
Absolutely fantastic compilation. Thanks for posting. Those early clips against the Trail Blazers are priceless.
My goodness he was awesome. Forget what ya heard, he changed the game more than anyone ever. EASILY 20 years ahead of his time. Monolithic player. That play at 10:50 is still probably the best move ever, at least in the Finals. Great call by Hot Rod and Musburger.
His elevation in mid air was bonkers. He truly looked like a majestic eagle expanding his wings, so graceful.
Absolutely loved Doc from the first time I saw him in 76. Little did I know he had already changed the game in the ABA. Met him in Atlanta at a Sixers/hawks game in 82. Signed every autograph for every fan. Coolest dude ever. Class. He also crammed one over Tree Rollins that night that was spectacular.
in these early 'sixers years footage, one thing that really stands out is how far erving could jump from the basket and dunk with guys hanging all over him, and with incredibe ease..one was from 12 ft. out...I've seen a '78 clip where he took-off from "thirteen" feet out and dunk over some guy..i kid u not, I wouldn't be surprised if erving could made a dunk from the foul-line with guys trying to block the shot..in his physical prime, "nobody" could leap from so far out with guys all over him..
14 dislikes from people who don't know what basketball is!!!!
One of the smartest basketball players on the court. His defense was always incredible, constantly stealing the ball. But his greatest gift was going coast to coast. As soon as he got the ball, no matter where he was on the court, he felt like he was in scoring position, lol. Once he got to full speed, nobody could stop him. And I mean nobody. He would jump however high he needed to to clear the defender by a foot. And what a great man, competitor and ambassador for the game. One of the classiest professional athletes of all time. The Doctor was the inspiration for every child Gen Xer back in the day. Jordan became the icing on the cake.
Thank you for posting. Enjoyed this very much.
the way he glides his arms with those BIG hands of his,you can not possibly block his dunks...DAMN!!!!
Love it when they call it "The stuff shot"...
Dunkshots!!
Nobody like Dr J he had me jumping off my kitchen table in my converse
He was ELECTRIFING
Beautiful dunk at 1:00.
I love when read how Bib Gross out played Doc! In what universe?
Say what you will about all the stats, about who's the ' greatest '...But in my opinion, Julius Erving aka ' Dr. J '..is THEE most entertaining player to EVER step on the court...After all, when it's all said and done, that's what basketball is really all about for spectators, and that is being entertained. And boy did the doctor ever did..
If Doc could only get those elusive rings
@@bradnobl He has three; his teams were 3-3 in the Finals.
if i were given a choice to be reincarnated as an nba player right now i would choose to be doctor j in an instant lol
MJ might be the overall GOAT but Dr J is the best dunker of all time. The hang time, the electrifying moves, the graceful takeoff and the high elevation floating layup is a beautiful sight to behold. In fact it is evident that some of these moves MJ adopted and improvised came from Dr J's playbook. He was the first true box-office NBA entertainer then came Magic, Bird, MJ and the rest.
I remember the Blazers/76ers series well and there is no doubt that Julius was the most exciting and entertaining player at the time (I think he was even better with the Nets). However, I was rooting for the Blazers to win because they played team basketball with Walton, in a rare healthy year, as the center piece. Walton was such a great center when healthy and he had a great year and won the MVP. The Sixers had more overall talent but they often played disjointed and selfishly. It would have nice to see Doc play with a team that was more focused on playing together.
I just rewatched the series...George McGinnis didn't show up at all until Game 6, literally shot less than 60 PERCENT fouls...this is a shooter and a top scorer who can barely make half his foul shots, he's in such a horrible slump..
.Doug Collins, now Collins played well until McGinnis shows up for game 6, then Collins plays for shit and disappears...Dr J wasn't a one man gang completely, but for long stretches, it was J vs the Blazers, who were a beter dfensive and rebounding team. At times, with Walton, Maurice Lucas, Lionel Hollins, and Bobby Gross, the Blazers played suffocating defense. And against a team already struggling offensively, that is deadly. Then throw in control of the boards so the Sixers cannot break for easy baskets, and have a poor outside shooting team taking outside shots[Bibby and McGinnis in particular were awful].
The first two games the Sixers won, the Blazers played flat and unaggressive, but after Game 2's famous Lucas/Dawkins fight, they played like animals And they shot extremely well. Just the better, more intelligent team. I also heard that after Dawkins accidentally busted Doug Collins eye before getting sucker-punched by Lucas in the back of the head, the Sixers lockerroom was a mess, with Dawkins complaining about no one having his back against Lucas...just another nail in the coffin...even still, even with three Blazers' blowouts, a memorable and good series.
As for Erving, definitely not his fault they got beat...Julius's stat line for the series
30.3 Points 6.8 rebounds 5,0 Assists 2,7 steals 1.2 blocks
Winning shots or outside shots M J. Highlights Reel Sorry Dr J hands down
My idol.man he had hang time frfr
The. Worst. Trade the. Nets could ever done. I could see the emotions in. Doc when he held the plack from the. Nets. I know when he went to the. 76rs. The. Nets knew they made the greatest mistake. God. Bless you. Julius your the. Greatest
Doc's finger roll was sweeter than Gervin's!!!
Doc had a great finger roll and never got the hype for it.
Kendrick Jones you are right
A thing of beauty!
Garvin said he learned the finger role from Doc when they played together in Virginia Gervin's rookie and second year.
Ice has said that he took his finger roll inspiration from Wilt and Doc. All 3 are in my top 10 favs.
Great video.
Without the old ABA footage when Julius was in his physical prime you miss alot but he was a player who would attack the rim every chance he had thats what great scorers do. He had a nice jumper which had to be respected and that opened space between him and defense. He had a great first step. But the drive and dunk seemed to work pretty well so he kept going back to that. Some players are timeless and would dominate no matter when they played despite what you kids think
dr j dunked so routinely. every move he made ended up the rim. the back down and then spin and jam on walton, i've never even seen seven footers do that to a prime bill walton.
Thank you for bringing that out! 95% of most jams today are not really contested and definitely not on 7footers like the Doctor did. That dunk on Walton showed the difference why he was so great- Walton had all the time and position to set up defensively yet it didn't matter, the 6'7" forward has superior leaping, body control, and massive hands that overcame every defensive player on a fast break situation like no other ABA or NBA player before or since.
Walton was never in his prime in the NBA. He had foot problems even early on which caused him to lose alot of games by being injured.
1:35 DAMMIT MAN! The Doctor took 2 patients at a time!
How many dunks did he have in that game?
The Doctor...enough said!
When I saw Doc, at 13:56 I said Oh Jesus!
Dr. J was the sh*t!!
Gotta salute him....
3:20 seconds=Too Smooth!
How do you guys feel about Doc -> Clyde the Glyde -> Westbrook?
You can clearly see this was Jordan’s idol.. he took this and elevated it.
Simply the GOAT OF DUMKS
Dunks
THIS IS WHO LEBRON JAMES REMINDS ME OF...THE DOCTOR. lebron is a swap between magic and doctor J but i think magic was a better passer than lebron and the doctor had more finess going to the basket. but you cant compare lebron to jordan! lebron does not have that type of game to me. LOVE THIS VIDEO! PEOPLE FORGET HOW GOOD THE DOCTOR WAS. THEY ACT LIKE BASKETBALL STARTED WITH THIS WEAK ASS GENERATION IN THE NBA TODAY.
Erving was the man in that series, but had little help. Portland in six.
Lew Alcindor, in his prime, let a man 8 inches shorter than him go unchallenged.
The dunk at 14 forgetatboutit
💕 💕 💕 💕 💕
21 people who Doc dunked over their grandfather's gave this a thumbs down
DvDgway LMFAO LOUDLY!!!
Greatest Forward Of All Time !
The greatest I don't care what nobody says!
Doc was a beast
AMEN!!
alvin banks jr I totally agree
Exactly
You're RIGHT!
People always mention Kobe or Jordan, but always forget about Dr. J. Erving won three championships, four Most Valuable Player Awards, and three scoring titles. He is the fifth-highest scorer in professional basketball history with 30,026 points. The "slam dunk"(which he innovated),as it is called, became an art form and came to help popularize the sport and he was well known for slam dunking from the free throw line. Was also named to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time team.
Dr. J had performed a baseline dunk over a seven foot-four Mark Eaton. Julius was thirty-six years old at the time. The year was 1986. At 6'7" and 215 lbs., he was the fastest small forward I've ever seen.
my favorite basketball player to watch ever, he really could put on a show with his fancy moves towards the basket
Greatest open court player ever. Nobody pulled a rebound down and just took off down the court and finished like Julius. Beautiful to watch. Dunked on EVERYBODY!
Check out the highlights of Doc posterizing Kareem multiple times on UA-cam....incredible!
That's the truth. Nobody
Exciting and Humble!
@@NWorship 90s baby haha
The doctor
I am 49 and former ball player. After seeing the Doc come into the NBA in 1976-77 he was responsible for broadening the total possibilites of what could be donec Creatively. He put the game twenty years ahead of it time. Whether he's better than so and so is not being raised. His greatest contribution is that he revoutionized the game and opened the fliud gates of possibilites. After seeing him play I was never the same!
Well put my man... I like how you worded that.
@@coolmod7731 Much respect! Almost forgot I wrote that.
@@ShangoDC Dang man wow! Cause that was 10 years ago I just noticed that. Check this out my man, some guy on here yesterday well 2 days ago I guess pitched a hissy fit because I said Dr. J dunked on Kareem but Jordan didn't.
@@coolmod7731 Lol… he dunked on him three or four times overall. Dr. J dunked on almost every body when he approached the rim. He did things at that time we hadn’t seen before.
@@ShangoDC Yeah Doc was a bad man, you already know it! I know you remember that rock the baby on Michael Cooper? Doc wasn't even in his prime when he did that.
I wish I could watch every single ABA and NBA game Julius played.
My hero too, fancy moves and airwalk towards the basket 🧺
How he controlled his body in the air is so amazing. He is the best.
Plus his hands are still big enough to palm the ball reliably, allowing him amazing control of the ball even when fully extended so he can get off all those wild finger rolls and onehanded sneak-a-dunks. A lot of guys who are small enough to make those drives have hands too small to allow that kind of ball control at the end of one fully outstretched arm.
the most exciting nba player ever
It's hard to disagree with you
@@NWorship young kareem Abdul-Jabbar could not stop dr.j airwalk moves towards the basket 🧺,, kareem Abdul-Jabbar could not stop connie hawkin close to the basket either
Dr.j used to moonwalk toward the nba basket to score

@@NWorship Jordan is great. This clip is not about him.
There would be no great Jordan moves if Julius never played.
Dr. J developed original moves before Jordan.
Jordan is great too
But there are many clips you can watch of him.
I rather watch Dr. J. I saw him in the ABA and his moves were better than Jordan.
The best ever, the Jimi Hendrix of basket
I've always said that
You said it best brother

Love drj fancy moves towards the basket, used to palm the basketball, had a bank jump shot. My hero
He didn’t score at a high rate nor win multiple championships?
Solomon Herrera but still ended his career with 30000 points 3rd all time behind WILT and KAREEM and 3rings 2nd all time in steals 3rd all time in blocked shots need I say more

No it was connie Hawkins
@@richardmanuel9812 ...Yes, Elgin and Cornelius brought that style into the NBA and ABA. However it was Julius who brought these features into the mainstream. Unfortunately, there aren't many clips of Baylor and Hawkins today.

"Way.....Rock the baby to sleep and slam dunk!" My favorite Dr. J dunk where he cuffed the basketball and brought it in a windmill from the side and SLAMMED it over Michael Cooper. One of Dr. J's most famous dunks and one of the top 10 all time NBA dunks in NBA history. :D
Yep, he rock the HELL out of that baby...So much so poor Cooper had to duck..lol
My favorite was nba finals 1980 dr.j reverse layup against l.a lakers nba championship over magic johnson &still young kareem Abdul-Jabbar
The reason I feel in love with basketball
Dr.j sold popcorn., soda, Drove people to nba area , put put on a show on basketball court
Julius Ervin was a masterpiece of skill and drive on the basketball court! Dr. J's hang time was so spectacular that when he was in the air, Rolex Watches stopped working!
🤓👍🏾
Julius Erving's game was decades before his time. He looked like a Man playing with children most of his career. Amazing talent.
Yeah true that!!!

He just simply reinvented the game of basketball. He looked like God on the basketball court.
Thanks for putting this together. He was on another level and a very interesting man.
There's no Jordan without the Doctor!
Most underrated comment ever...why do Jordan fans not understand where their idols get inspiration from...
Doc saved the NBA jus sayin
@@bobbycorps7891 Jordan has never denied being inspired by those before him. He said that a lot in interviews so I don't know what you're talking about. Jordan has always had a deep respect for those who were there before him. So we fans have no problem saying he was inspired. He was inspired by the best.
@@chrisscott7913 was talking about most of the Jordan fans that think he created the free throw line dunk and other moves that Jordan studied and put his own better spin on them.. those that didn't watch what mountains he had to climb to dominate the 90s in denying the greats of the Jazz for instance rings.
Not talking about Jordan himself denying what you stated.
Mainly dumb Jordan Fans who didn't watch NBA in the 90's just love nostalgia of the 90's without studying it.
@@bobbycorps7891 Most of the players, even those today, took inspiration from those before them (Obviously they added their own magic but they took inspiration from others.) Jordan did the same. Most Jordan or Orange Ball fans know this. In short, those who deny that know nothing.
The most beautiful player ever to watch on a fastbreak
Like Dr J said: What you saw in the 90's I was doin in the 70's..an he might of said "we" we're doin I forget but he was rite if you really pay attention!! He was DEFINITELY ahead of his time!!!
His ABA years were even better! It was like he was holding a grapefruit in his hands rather than a basketball.

Damn, you have some great footage. This was the time in my life when I breathed, ate and slept basketball. Dr J has always been my idol and Philly was my team. Period. I hated that they would get so close to the championship year after year and then lose to either Boston or Los Angeles. I was happy when the 76'ers won after acquiring Moses Malone.

To all the people talking about how bad of a defender he was please notice how many times he steals the rock
Julius Erving > Larry Bird
Absolutely.
Great clips! Doc was at his peak in the 70s and is arguably the best open court player ever. No center including Jabbar and Walton were stopping Dr J at the hoop and especially in the open court. Prime Doc is the most exciting player ever!
I watched Doc during the 70's and first part of the 80's. He was and still is the most exciting player I've since in his prime. Never since anything like him.
I had such a good time watching this. Thanks for posting this. My favorite of all time.
nobody could stop doc nobody.
Sadly only father time can..Father time haven't lost to anyone yet..
I'm old enough to have remembered the 1976-77 season when he joined the NBA, and he had a lot of spectacular moves in the playoffs and thanks for putting them here. One of them isn't here: a vicious dunk on a fastbreak in Dave Cowens' face n Game 7. The Sixer home crowd went crazy and the Celtics had to call a time-out. It's often put among his Top 10 dunks.
Man the dude was intoxicating you was riveted to the TV set!
once Dr. J gets runnin fast with the ball, its over man
Doc has always been my top player.
Dr. J ran like a gazelle and jumped liked a kangaroo. He was amazing and there will never be another player like him including Jordan.
I have never seen any player that compares to the doctor.
He never got credit for his defense. He was a great shot blocker & was great at stealing the ball. Most people don't realize that those great dunks were usually the end result of a block shot or a steal. He will always be my favorite player of all time.
Dr J ( in my opinion ) have one of the most beautiful moves aka handle of the ball in the history of basketball... I mean, whenever he does that one handed move of holding the ball with his huge hand, swooping it around without even touching the ball with his off hand, and either dunk it or lay it in..is literally poetry in motion...To this day ( correct me if I'm wrong ) but I have not seen any greats ever do that..I'm sure some might have done it once here and there..but Dr J does it with beautiful ease, and he seems to do it often..where it's so natural for him.. My favorite player EVER..the DOCTOR !!

Curry, LeBron and Kobe?
