Do you know why SG built so many airport terminals ? It is mainly for the region and Indonesia up-coming middle class. The whole lot coming for 2-3 days shopping, business and spendings... wow !!!
Had to paus the video to comment because I resonated so much about young people complaining about Singapore. I was one of them before I started travelling. I complained about how boring SG is, how strict, how expensive, how we had to pay CPF etc. After I started travelling, though I haven't lived anywhere else, I could see how Singapore was a much better country to live in than any of the other places I visited. I mean, sure, they were lovely to visit as a tourist but I couldn't imagine myself living there long-term. There are so many little things that we took for granted which I learned to appreciate after I travel. For example, we are building MRT around my estate and I appreciate how they design their construction works to ensure that people still have a proper sidewalk with clear instructions to get to their destinations. I have many times walked to a dead end in other countries where the sidewalk disappears for no apparent reason and you just have to walk on the grass or on the road.
This is so true! i have been talking to many younger chaps that criticized Singapore and they are so pampered. They want freedom of speech and freedom of action with regardless of safety and security, i was born in the 70s and i think i have seen the changes in Singapore, and i am fortunate enough to see the transformation between SG and the rest of the countries. I worked in Singapore, and I would say the same. The younger generation of Singapore is too lucky, I'm not really sure why they are still complaining about life in Singapore. Everything is at hands if they wanted, short travel distances (mind you, 50 minutes travel is considered normal in Malaysia), public transport everywhere immediately. And a fully functional library, and government funds help in education and living supports. I would hope Malaysia. could do the same too.

This is probably the best video I have seen on so many levels - managing and creating wealth, dealing with people, dealing with family, managing you life, aging, values, global perspective of governments and future directions - a truly inspiring Aussie with an amazing world view.
As a Singaporean who grew up middle class , studied in a local school in sg , stayed in HDBs my whole life , , currently living in Australia (for my education) and have lived in india and canada before , people don’t understand how privileged we are to be in Singapore . Once you travel outside of sg and actually live in another country (not as a tourist but as a resident ) , you’ll realise how easy and sorted it is for us in sg . The transportation system and healthcare system we have is probably the best I’ve ever seen , the prices of food at cafes / normal food stores and hawker centre ( considering that sg is a first world country) is remarkably cheap. People complaining about how chicken rice now cost $7 bucks (its fair to be frustrated with that considering how it used to cost $2.50 back then ) but bro .. go out to other first world countries and see how a decent meal at a place that’s considered ‘cheap ‘ can cost $20 🥲
Let me add , yes I was a frustrated teenager here in sg . I felt trapped and I needed the exposure of being in a different country. After living in 4 different countries, I’m alittle more grateful about my country. Yes there are downsides to being in sg , the rules are hella strict and quite often , life becomes dry and boring (mainly because there’s no scope for the arts in this country) but I’ve no doubts on how amazing the country is when is comes to making sure that their people have access to safety , good and affordable healthcare, good education ( yes I agree it’s stressful, I failed my O level exams BUT I still believe that our system does the job of educating the kids well) , god bless the EASILY accessible public transportation and how amazingly easy it is to figure the transportation system out if you’re new to the country as it’s a walkable city. You really don’t need a car.
yes , Sonu fully agree with you , if any1 flang , the exam , retest .... go & learn up the most easy 1 , automatically u will understand the tough 1 , nothing is that diffucult , test till u pass , you can do it so do others😊 cheers
Excellent interview! Thanks Max..😍 🤩 Woww this guy is so inspiring and if ppl take away some of his wisdom it would help them chart their lives in a more focused manner 👍👍🙌🌺
I've always imagined living in Singapore to be like dividing a cake you buy from the bakery. The global and local elite, by virtue of their wealth, intelligence and network, get the biggest slices, while the average Singaporean gets the crumbs. But the government tries to make you feel better by giving you some sprinkles and chocolate sauce to go with your crumbs, to make it more palatable. I guess unequal and inequitable distribution of wealth, opportunity and resources happens in every society, but in Singapore, the sugar coating is more obvious to keep the masses happy.
I must thank you both, Max for finding this human treasure trove of life and business wisdom, and John, for so liberally sharing said wisdom. Goodonya mate and deep, warm thanks to you.
Many young Singaporean don't appreciate what they have now. True, singapore is not perfect (Goverment) but to me, that's as close to heaven as you can get as compared with the rest of the world now. They really don't understand how we come this far......
The United States as we know it is no more. All signs point to 2024 being a year of significant economic hardship for the entire nation. Put your cash to use straight away to increase its value. I was aware that I needed to invest. I had no idea how quickly a few thousand dollars a month would go up. Though it is. Since 2020, I've made about $600,000.
It’s precisely at times like these that investors need to be on guard against the next certainty. You don’t have to act on every forecast, hence i will suggest you get yourself a financial-advisor that can provide you with entry and exit points on the shares/ETF you focus on.
I wholeheartedly concur; I'm 60 years old, just retired, and have about $1,250,000 in non-retirement assets. Compared to the whole value of my portfolio during the last three years, I have no debt and a very little amount of money in retirement accounts. To be completely honest, the information provided by invt-advisors can only be ignored but not neglected. Simply undertake research to choose a trustworthy one.
Certainly, there are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’AILEEN GERTRUDE TIPPY” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.
The guys running Dubai and the people living in Dubai have a very different world view from the guys running Singapore and living in Singapore. Dubai is medieval in comparison to Singapore, especially in terms of ethical and social values.
So true👏🏻 to be able to wake up and do what you need to do to get things going safely on a daily basis is a blessing which some keyboard warriors and Singaporeans take them for granted and blame the government for every slightest imperfections they can dig out, these shameless people need a life.
I love your videos! This one is especially interesting. Super insightful guest. One suggestion-have a longer intro segment for the guests. Especially what they do professionally in the country. Maybe let them introduce themselves. In any case, one more sub here.
I am Malaysian and my cousins moved permanently to Singapore fr Aust and London due to better job opportunities and low tax. Plus, it's closer to their home too.
Hardly long enuff in London but still realise it’s a shit country so kudos to them! But they should keep Malaysia in mind too if they want to live in pure convenience and cheaper space and land.
thanks for this interview. For sure it seems too positive, but I guess John is a success story himself, so it's no surprise. I like the part where he said the older you wait to get started on learning new tech, the better is the tech LOL. Very insightful perspective. Pretty sure every one complains when they are struggling to find a footing, and then when they do land, they may then start appreciating what's around them. It's a fine balance and it should be and it should evolve as maturity and life experiences are gained. No doubt about it, Singapore has done very well for its residents.
Singapore's problem is that it is a victim of its own success. Yes, the younger generations have been too sheltered to understand the world out there and believe what the norms in Singapore are norms everywhere.
Aiyah, we Singaopreans always like to complain, when we're told to look outside to see how well we've got it .... we look down at our feet and tell you to shut up.
Really good chat. Though, I can hear Singaporeans I know say “of course rich Ang mohs say this about SG”. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Singapore, but I’ve learned to tempter my glowing references as I know it does have quite a few issues yet to resolve particularly for those less well off. Look at the hunched over Aunty struggling to work in KFC, or the old uncle cleaning the food court. No doubt it has so much of an advantage over others though. He’s so right about Australia. It’s virtually impossible to simply get a start with a home. SG’s HDB is great provided people get married - though that hasn’t kept the birth rate up either. SG is ahead, but it’s still a work in progress. Majulah Singapura!
Our parent is our main responsibilty. They ( children )are the main providers. If a parent can take care of 10 children why can't we? We can't expect the government solely to care every singaporean from cradle to grave. The government has given and provided many incentives and subsidies to seniors. They will receive assistance and handouts from the government and charitable organizations. They should come forward to seek help; otherwise no one will know about their difficulties and struggles.
@@kamariahabdrahim6963 Put the onus on the individual? That’s not very Confucian. This is one area where Australia is streets ahead of most countries. With the cost of living and people living longer, it’s not right to squeeze people by having to struggle with working while both raising a family and being solely responsible for their parents. Is it any wonder birth rates are so low? In Australia, in addition to normal aged care homes, many higher quality options exist where people fund it through selling their home - specialist seniors housing is in high demand. There was also a suggestion from Paul Keating (PM who introduced Superannuation) to add a golden years tax that all would pay to fund specialist aged care for those who need it over 80. People who say it’s a cultural thing in Asia, well it was too in Australia once but it need not be. I think this is an issue SG sweeps under the carpet so as to not lose face - both the country and the families themselves. A reasonable retirement with professional care if needed is an important indicator of a fair and successful society. My point is that Singapore is a work in progress, with success and great policy in many areas, and hopefully will get this right soon too.
Really Dave? Those aunty struggling in Singapore is so much better than the hordes of homeless, rampant drug abuse and crime invested place like downtown LA
As Singapore PRs (Malaysians) relocated abroad by the Singapore branch of an American company, we are looking forward to returning to and retiring in Singapore sometime in future, after some travelling right after the retirement.
The unhappy ones are the one who are more vocal. There are many Singaporeans who appreciate Singapore who keep quiet online. We also have to account for foreign influence on social media pretending to be unsatisfied Singaporeans to try to manipulate the politics.
When one live a life where it's technically planned out from baby till adulthood, and haven't experienced any major life challenges or experienced what it's live to actually live and work elsewhere other than Singapore, they will not be able to understand or appreciate what we have in Singapore. . Kids here are guaranteed to go to school, we don't hear dropouts very often. Majority of the kids go to tertiary education. And young able bodied adults could get jobs, any jobs easily as well as any decent paying jobs based on their qualifications that could afford them a home and decent living. And the cycle starts again with their kids. . And since they have never felt a sharp contrast of how bad life can be, they will always ask for more, more things that will satisfy their feelings to make them feel good.

For the youngsters just like myself (I'm 28) - I've been all around the West (Australia, USA, UK) to meet and hang with my friends and family - Sure, they're cooler countries for young people with lots more to do, but there is LITERALLY no difference in every day life. I lived in the Philippines and in Singapore but never been in Dubai. But it's so true that Singapore is really safe and clean. I would definitely choose Singapore to live long term rather than in the Philippines where traffic is horrible, no high-speed modern train from and to the airport, filthy airports are bug infested (far from Changi lol), airport security are swallowing money from foreign passengers, people getting killed by muggers almost every day (so not safe walking alone at night), famous rivers are filled with sacks of garbage despite the cleaning projects of the local govt, stray bullets are a norm during new years eve celebrations, obsessed with using firecrackers before, during, & after fiestas, same with new years celebration, all that pollution. It's 2024 and the Philippines is still so far from where Singapore is right now. This is why I'm not surprised that Philippine passport-holders are still required to have a visa to visit the US, Japan, & Australia (their so-called allies) 😂😂😂

Younger Singaporeans have not seen blood in the streets, slums, street gangs collecting protection monies from small businesses, they take the safety, peace, and prosperity they enjoy today for granted.
I have been living in Europe for 40 years..... Singapore is much more better in safety, cleanness , crimes , humans behaviour and respect of laws..........
Big countries will always have big problems. Singapore and Dubai are essentially tax heavens and service oriented economies. Dubai has oil money but let’s leave it aside for now. India, Africa, Latin America have huge potential but lot of people and problems and political chaos. If these regions did not have population then they would have easily become like Singapore and Dubai.

We are indeed blessed to be born in Singapore.
A fair assessment - but the small slice of a big cake beats half a cake next door! or anywhere in ASEAN.
It could be worse. You can live in the USA where the government covers the crumbs in feces instead of chocolate.
I must thank you both, Max for finding this human treasure trove of life and business wisdom, and John, for so liberally sharing said wisdom. Goodonya mate and deep, warm thanks to you.

A good interview, there are still many Singaporeans that will not appreciate what they have. They need to have more exposure.
She appears to be well-educated and well-read. I ran a Google search on her name and came across her website; thank you for sharing.

The guys running Dubai and the people living in Dubai have a very different world view from the guys running Singapore and living in Singapore.
Dubai is medieval in comparison to Singapore, especially in terms of ethical and social values.
Oh dear. Medieval does not sound appealing. Appreciate your sharing

I enjoyed this video a lot. Lots of wisdom coming out from him :) Thanks!!
amazing interview. thanks for the great content.
Singapore's problem is that it is a victim of its own success. Yes, the younger generations have been too sheltered to understand the world out there and believe what the norms in Singapore are norms everywhere.
I would love to visit Singapore one day
Aiyah, we Singaopreans always like to complain, when we're told to look outside to see how well we've got it .... we look down at our feet and tell you to shut up.

refreshing discssion, thanks for the video!

I do agree, younger generation Singaporeans do not seem to appreciate what Singapore is today.

Extremely agreed with his perspective of Singapore.
Awesome city discussion.
He's from Australia. He probably also wants to live closer to home whereas Dubai is quite a lot further from Australia.
For the youngsters just like myself (I'm 28) - I've been all around the West (Australia, USA, UK) to meet and hang with my friends and family - Sure, they're cooler countries for young people with lots more to do, but there is LITERALLY no difference in every day life. You pretty much do the same shit in Singapore that you'd do in NYC except it's cheaper to buy a car. Have fun being in a failed city lol.
As long as you can find open-minded people like yourself in SG, you're good. That I feel poses a challenge here, as I feel the West seems to have more open-minded and interesting individuals, but maybe that's just me.
Great conversation, Singaporean like to compaint should watch.

5:00 the guest is talking about how safe Singapore is, how good to travel as Singaporean, food is good blah blah. However, these concepts are not the everyday lifestyle of common people where they have to worry paying their bills every month, afraid to getting sick as medical care are costly, and the threat of losing job. Come on, you are talking from a different angle and can never understand how Singaporean lives. So don’t pretend to know the locals and admits you are living in your own world only.
Australians are actually living in the future... not Singaporeans.
Younger Singaporeans have not seen blood in the streets, slums, street gangs collecting protection monies from small businesses, they take the safety, peace, and prosperity they enjoy today for granted.
It would be more respectable to address our former prime minister as Lee Kuan Yew than "old man lee"

Yeah when you have lots of money, Singapore is a fantastic place to rock in: low tax, great safety, great infrastructure, comfortable to live, you get almost everything you want, zero capital gain tax, zero inheritance tax, low corporate tax, and zero dividends tax and yes, it’s quite cheap to live in Singapore…. If you have lots of money.
