- Haircut and hair styling in the historic 성우이용원 Seongu Barbershop in Seoul, South Korea.
In 1927, Mr. Lee’s grandfather opened the barbershop. At that time, he was the second Korean who was given a permit for barbering by the occupying Japanese. It was in the 1960s when Mr. Lee began cutting hair. He worked with his dad all the way up until the 1970s when his dad decided to retire.
We stopped by the shop to film on a weekday afternoon thinking perhaps it might be quieter during a weekday as opposed to the weekend. We found Mr. Lee had a regular stream of customers coming by the shop so when it was our turn, I hopped into the chair and the camera started to roll!
Mr. Lee is a little over 5’ tall so uses a footstool to stand on while working on his customers. You’ll also see him using potato starch in my hair as a visual aid. In the past, barbers used powders that contained asbestos so Mr. Lee switched to potato starch as it is not harmful.
He still lathers up his shaving soap on the side of a hot water pot heated on a charcoal stove and uses watering cans to wash your hair as well as does a vinegar rinse.

This barber shop has been opened since 1927. Master Lee’s grandfather started the barber shop. And the tools that Mr. Lee use are very classic, especially a razor was manufactured in 19th Century. Also this barber shop is officially chosen as the heritage of Seoul City. As a seoulite, I’m very proud of this shop.
Biddley Boo Taribo West chosen by Seoul municipal government
@@JackManEveryday it makes Perfect sense..
If you have something that has been a (well)known part of your community for ages and/or are a historic landmark or place why wouldnt you mark it as such?
Places like these are more Than worth keeping (and rightly so)
this barber shop has been broken because of the wind....but now the barber shop opened modernly.
so there's a "seoulite" now huh... then Ima call myself "Amerilite"

Dream come true! Some years ago he complained about young people no longer being interested in his trade and the lack of respect, many were making fun of him. Thanks to youtube he's a star in Korea right now, young folks comin from all over to visit him. The number of views his vids are generating in Korea is just insane
Pamwe Chete Does he have a UA-cam Chanel?
I hoped Harry would visite this Shop for years and finally he is there
I hoped Harry would visite this Shop for years and finally he is there
Well is understandable. Harry helped him to push some audience + Mr Lee is a master already on his field. Young people needs to learn from experience.
good to hear
Over 2 years and I still watch this to go to sleep. I know the exact times that trigger my asmr lol. Thanks for always putting up this content. It’s greatly appreciated.

Same. I left for baba sen for a while. Too much honking, not enough "relax." asmr gibi is great, asmr darling too. Back in the Korean barber shop for a bit. Let's see how my insomnia does against master Lee.
Been watching it also God knows how many times, never gets old. The barber is my favorite person I have never met.
Same here lol
The sound of the scissors being used is what does it for me.
This is absolutely amazing, this is art for that barber. That is one of the best haircuts I have ever seen. The techniques he used are traditions that many barbers these days don’t follow. Much respect.

💯
I agree, he's got a unique style and I like how he always has a fan blowing at your feet and legs
One technique he used is sommething I've never heard of or thought of doing. At 20:30 he puts thewhite powder on his hair very lightly just on the very top layer of hair to act as a marker while he's blending and fading so he can track it as a highly visible guideline for maximum accuracy.

Everything about this video is perfect but i can't explain why, the setting is rustic and humble yet simple, the quietness of the inside and distant noise of a busy city outside, the colours blend, the care and effort in the haircut, the waiting for the phone till the third ring and the delicious click of him putting the phone down, youtube is a strange and wonderful place
The third ring is what did it for me. *chef's kiss*
Right down to the CORDED phone!
Write a book already
Why third ring? Any reason for that??
Nice breakdown 😏
Pixar should make a relaxing short film of this guy cutting hair. Like remember that old guy in toy story when he put woody back together. It was so calming.
So I'm not the only one that thinks that.. finally!
Make it a short like the one of the old guy playing Chess with himself.
Hey kristina

Brooo when I was a little kid I always rewatched that movie just for that part
Every small town bussiness is the backbone of all of these towns.....love this!!
Nobody is going to mention the fan under the cape. That’s amazing. Pure comfort in this video I’m guessing.
What cape? There’s no superman in this video.
No unnecessary small talk, just pure concentration and relaxation, best barber in the world!
Well to be fair, I'm pretty sure the barber doesn't speak much English
Just ✨vibes✨
@@BlGSac I think too
I don't mind the small talk, if it's not constant, and the barber has a personality... Mr. Baby-Face
true this, i always get the chatty 1s :(
I used to grow my hair out long, and I would go to an old WWII vet barber, every 3 years. The only haircut he gave was a flat top. He had so much pride ( and joy) making a long haired skater, look like a Marine, every 3 years. Thank you Glenn. ( Spring Branch, Houston, Texas.) He has since passed many years ago. But I carry my tradition, in memory of my WWII vet haircutting retired Marine!
😊
F 😢
That barber in Spring Branch sounds like Fred Placker. He was a WWII marine also. He had shrapnel wounds on his arms. His shop was on Bingle Road next to the Russell's grocery store.
do you know where the shop was? i live in spring branch
Rubina Khan no he doesn’t , he’s one of those people that makes a very interesting comment yet disappears forever , to never answer any questions or replies
I’m impressed by how....gently(?) he handles the hair. He uses a light, precise, gentle hand when it comes to doing a haircut. Honestly, it was relaxing to watch him do this.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve rewatched this video. Each time I am blown away by Barber Lee’s skill, and the fabulous videography.

These old school barbers are a national treasure in their respective countries. Love watching the care and skills of a true master.

Why does this barber put powder on Harry’s hair before cutting it?

There’s always something special when a person treats his/her job with professionalism and craftsmanship.
They do it right with methodical precision with a great and positive result. It’s just a fantastic old school style that one should never fault. They are few and far between these days. These are the people to reach out to. And tell them you appreciate and value their work.
Yeah..it goes from a skill to an art
49 years ago we had Korean barbers at the Seoul Yongsan U.S. Army base. They always did a great job with their scissors just like this master barber.
Love the sound of the drawer opening and closing.
Ahh.. the scissor sounds, the fan noise in the background, busy world outside and calmness and serenity inside 🧘♂️👂💤

2:32 my man made sure he himself was looking good before commencing his work xD
that was so cute omg
Glad I'm not the only who noticed that too. Lol
That was so cool. A quick little hair check and adjustment before going in.
His own hair adjustment was an act of pride and professionalism. Before he actually began his craft (cutting the hair) he first assured his own image was perfect. Businessmen and women from around the world should be required to watch this.
@@MA-vp6op love to see it
I see what he did there at 20:30. That's quite clever.
He used the white powder as a marker of sorts so that he could evenly blend it as he goes, since as he travels upwards while cutting the white powder will disappear as the hair falls off with it. So he can use the powder as a guideline to make sure the whole thing is even, since he's only using scissors.
I don't know why, but watch this video every day, it's amazing to see how professional he is.
He has more than 50 years of career. It's hard to explain, but he has real character. Every movement shows unknown pride.
he was amazing on the barber of seville! also cut cha taehyuns hair and shaved defconns beard off the early episodes of 2 days 1 night!
His experience definitely shows, from every little movement he does.
All respect for the way he trying doing his job but.. I saw many much better in Harry's channel

When the phone starts ringing at 10:40 he waits until the 3rd ring to answer; the epitome of etiquette!
Why he does that
Maybe he waits confirm if the caller is really calling? Like sometimes we misdial on calls and stop the call immediately. Not sure tho
If you think about it if you phone someone and they answer straight away it shows they aint busy and waiting by the phone, Maybe letting it ring a few times gives the illusion that you are busy with customers even if there is no one in, But who knows lol.
WeBO557 y’all are thinking about it way too hard lol Some times people have like these urges. like when you have to step on ever other tile while walking. it’s simple things that some people like myself do. I also do the same thing with the phone because it just feels right to me
Many used to do that with the old land lines! People today don’t know, or understand the ‘old ways’ etiquette
Is it me or does anyone else have that feeling watching the haircut that this is not just a job for this guy it's his form of art, so focused.
