Always use a tool such as Wayback Machine first, where you can take a look at the content and pages that were on the domain in its previous life:

@@rocktherankings thanks. wayback is very cumbersome and often unrevealing. is there a software that can examine a site for its cleanliness?

@@kirtg1 Typically using Wayback Machine (haven't found any issues in the datasets or archives) + Ahrefs to analyze the link profile. As well as checking if any pages remain indexed - otherwise, no other tools normally needed in my opinion. Have also heard of the The Memento Project which is an alterantive, but haven't personally used it.
