The Legendary Mad Cat - Battletech / Mechwarrior Mech Spotlight: The Timberwolf
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- The Timberwolf, also known as the Mad Cat, is probably one of the most powerful and iconic Mechs in the BattleTech universe. Originally developed by Clan Wolf in 2945, this 75-ton heavy-class OmniMech has earned a fearsome reputation for its extreme mobility, versatility, and firepower.
The advanced OmniPod technology allows for rapid customization and reconfiguration of its weapon loadouts to adapt to different battlefield situations. This makes the Timberwolf a formidable opponent on the battlefield, capable of fulfilling various roles such as long-range fire support, close-range brawling, and hit-and-run ambush.
One of the Timberwolf’s key features is its exceptional mobility. Powered by an advanced fusion engine, it boasts impressive speed and maneuverability, as well as jump jet capabilities that allow it to traverse a wide range of terrain types with ease. This makes the Mad Cat highly adaptable to various combat scenarios.
Its sleek design, advanced technology, and storied history have solidified its place as a legendary and feared presence on the battlefield.

It is my honor that you are featuring this Timberwolf model that I made! Would be even more cool if I am credited for it 😊
Such is the life of a modder.
Funny that I don't see you crediting the original designer and illustrator of the mech here in the first place. FASA don't exist anymore so you don't need to?
@@mad_max21 if you had visited the actual mod site, you will know that I credited the original designer Steve Venters, I prefer to support the artist directly.
@@mad_max21 get humbled lol.
While I love this design, I want only the MWO/MW5 style mechs in my game. This in MW5 ruins the continuity for me.
One of the most iconic mechs of the battletech universe.
Still missing in both games battletech (2016) and mw5 mercs.
Rumor has it that there will be a new single player Mech game by PGI in 2024 - my bet is on the Clan Invasion!
@@Baradul I hope they don't screw it up
This is coming from a cousin that does freelance coding in the computer gaming industry. He did some of the work on MW5 and is involved with MW6. I asked him what the next game is. He knows I play Mechwarrior and said it's the Invasion including the FUCKING Battle of Tukayyid
@@Baradul I hope you can play as clanners in that specifically clan wolf
Please, let it be so.
"Two LRM20, because fu at range" -Tex
If mad cat existed in real life i would imagine that Germans design it due to its high quality and flexibility. Knowing how german engineering works it gives me such vibes
Definitely my favorite. This and the smaller one that you could load to the tits with missiles
ive only played one of these games as a child and prob no more then a couple of hours in total. but this was quite interesting. might pick one of the older ones up at some point and see how i like it now. i at the very least think it was one of these games cuz look very familiar and recognize the name. was some 15 or more years ago though so was very long ago. might also have been something very simular but guess those of u who got more of a "expertise" in this game/games can let me know in the comments.
Might be MechAssault on the original X-Box.
@@bigballzmcdrawz2921 ye maybe. Guess i can check the game you Said out tomorrow after work & see if that is it. Thanks for the response bud
And yet the IS can just salvage it and make it work w ease.
Baradul should do more voiceovers. It's like if the Steiners got their shit together and started being smart
LUL
Yea, we can vouch for his skills in voiceovers :)
@@WatchTMC haha nice, love hired steel
Uh, Frederick Steiner aka Anastasius Focht. The guy who kicked in the Clanners in the mouth.
@@mad_max21 That was Space AT&T sir
Absolute favorite mech in Battletech. When people think of Battletech, they usually think of the Atlas.
When *I* think Battletech, the Timberwolf is always what comes to mind. Thanks, Mechwarrior 2!
Definitely one of the franchise's most iconic battlemechs. The Timber Wolf graced the cover of Mechwarrior 2, the first exposure to Battletech for legions of fans-- including myself!
Id say the Timberwolf & Atlas are the posterboys of the francise.
@@bigballzmcdrawz2921 Agree.
Now that was a badass game cover, you the Timber Wolf surrounded by flames/black box it was cool as hell
then later got decimated the the atlas and so forth in mw3 intro lol
Probably the most iconic mech of all time. When you think of mech warrior this is the first thing that pops into your head.
YESSS!
Brilliant mech. Especially lall those older mechs, like the Summoner and the Hellbringer Prime too. Cool designs from the older Mechwarrior days.
My favorite ever. Ive filled a load of books with drawings of these as a child, when i used to play mech commander. Oh the memories
Timberwolf is one of my favorite mechs next to the vulture. Both iconic and deadly in their own right .
I love the Vulture. My all time fav.
My first MW game was MW2.
I was 4 when my dad bought a new vaio pc and the physical copy of the game came w the computer.
Played it and loved it so much. Growing up. Timberwolf on the box and main screen brought me so much love
I really love this kind of informative shorts! Thank you!
The only other mech I can think of that is as iconic as the Mad Cat would be the Atlas, but it's a very distant second.
The Atlas and Marauder are both much more iconic than the Mad Cat
@@TheAchilles26 - I'm not sure what reality you live in, but neither of those are more iconic than the Mad Cat. The Atlas is close, but still not on the same level. The Marauder isn't even on the list when it comes to icons. Sorry to say it, but you're wrong.
@@mynameisray I live in the real world, where both of those have spent years as the icons of the setting.....and the "MAD" in "Mad Cat" literally comes from its resemblance to the Marauder, thus unequivocally demonstrating that the Marauder is more iconic
@TheAchilles26 - You're not living in this reality with a response like that. The lore goes the recognition software when they first came across the Mad Cat couldn't identify between a Marauder and a Catapult. It was never based on either of those. It was simply a new mech on the field that the computer couldn't identify because it had never been seen.
That in no way makes the Marauder iconic at all. And you're free to ask anyone. The Mad Cat and the Atlas are by far the most iconic. Going back through the games and the table top, you don't find a mech more used to show off the franchise. Every time they release something without a Mad Cat the forums are flooded with questions about the Mad Cat being in the game.
The Mad Cat and Atlas are Mechwarrior/BattleTech.
@@mynameisray the Mad Cat's design is literally and flagrantly based on the Marauder, and the game demands for the Mad Cat are because it's the biggest Mary Sue of a mech ever released.
Fell in love the moment I climbed into the Mad Cat/Timberwolf in Mechassault 2. Such a visually and physically impactful unit...but man, the price tag on them makes you do a double take.
The mech that got me into Battletech.
I loved this mech back then, and seeing it fully fledged in HD made me fall for it again.. its beautiful!
Also great work on these shorts! They're bound to blow up soon so keep things going!
I was so excited to see this pop up. Proper respect for one of, if not *the* greatest mechs ever designed.
Ah, yes. The MadCat.
I first got an introduction to this puppy on the Sega Genesis game, Battletech. It was a beast.
Apparently, it very much still is.
Thanks for these vids, man!
On point as usual.
One of my top 5 favorite designs in Battletech, right up there with the Warhammer and the Marauder.
was a great one in mechassault too, PPC's, LRM's and machine guns.
the classic design of the Timberwolf still sends shivers up my spine when I see one on the battlefeild
Madcat, Vulture, and Thanatos were my fav mechs in MW4
Best mech of all time
Hey guys, am I gonna like this game if I liked AC6? I loved the Mech building and customization in that game
depends.
battletech is much more in depth than any armored core. It's focus is on team based attrition. It's closer to a sim than 'video game'
MadCat, my second favorite mech of all time.
What do I love more?
Phoenix Hawk.
based. Phoenix Hawk is my fav.
I still remember the first time this popped up on radar in the books. What an epic moment seeing something so powerful and yet completely unknown show up on the battlefield.
The inner sphere mech's battle computer couldn't identify the mech. It kept flickering between Marauder and Catapult, hence its inner sphere name MadCat.
Ah, yes, the Stackpole second trilogy about the coming of the Clans. Still have it amongst the near 90 battletech novels I own.
To getba mad cat you can get one through salvage. Salvage rights is only acquired by winners. Good luck
From somewhere Rimward of Terra, I swear I can hear, "Get Focht!"
If you hear someone call it a Timberwolf, remind them it’s a MadCat and call them a Wolverine
Them’s fightin’ words, freebirth scum!
Okay, have fun with your broken targeting computer that even misabbreviates a Catapult.
Enjoy having caveman tech and needing to steal our stuff and sabotage us to win, Spheroid.

Timber Wolf is the original Clan designation. The IS gave it the Mad Cat designation, so Timber Wolf is actually more accurate.
While the Clans get a lot of recognition on the technology side for things like their energy weapons and ballistic weapona being lighter and deadlier than their IS counterparts, they don't get enough recognition for the thing that makes the Timber Wolf truly deadly:
All their standard missile systems weigh half of what their IS versions do. Which is why the Timber Wolf can carry 2 LRM20s. Together, they weigh as much as a single IS LRM20 or, as a more pertinent example, the two LRM10s carried by that red-headed stepchild, the Rakshasa.
0:33 The Chad all Timber Wolf lance
Srms in the silos and gauss in the arms. That's how they had the Twolf configured in mechassault, that game had 2 versions of almost every mech in game. The mad cat version had lrms and ppcs. Whatever loadout has srms/gauss is my pick. It was OP in MA
I argue that the Timberwolf aka the Madcat is the Ultimate Mech or at least one of the ultimate mechs. It can pretty much do practically anything. It's base set up has something for everything.
Trying to hit long range it goes you covered with 2 Lrm pods. Need some heavy hitting medium to long range you got two Large lasers for that. Need to fight up close welp you got two Large Lasers, Two Medium lasers and if your opponent is running low on Armor then it's two machine guns can melts that opponent away.
Not only is it loaded with Heavy Firepower, but it's extremely Quick and fast one of the Fastest heavies in the existence. On top of that it can also jump around the battlefield.
And to make things even better not only is it loaded with firepower, and Extremely fast. It's also is very heavily Armored as well.
Most other mechs especially in the Heavy class, you always have tradeoffs some have a lot of firepower but they are extremely slow. Some are extremely fast but have little fire power. But with the Timberwolf you can nearly have it all.
The Timberwolf is in my opinion one of the best Mechs in the Battletech Universe. A Timberwolf can destroy in any situation you come across it can go toe to toe with Assaults and run nearly circles around them. It can Smash peer heavies, and simply crush anything smaller than it. There is a reason why everyone and their mother tries to focus down a Timberwolf when they see one.
If you are willing to pay a premium or go to later settings, this mech can give you all you need to seize bloody glory.
Unless you want to smash and bash. Then your premium is a Bersserker or an Man O' War K.
...A.k.a. the Swiss Army Knife of BattleMechs ! 😎
Don't forget to mention that it's design is influenced by the bomber that dropped two atomic bombs
you said you haven't got any negative comments on these shorts.. so here is one..
5x-1= -5
My absolute #1 favorite mech!
This was one of my most favorite Mechs!
Iconic. When someone says mech this thing pops into my head. Classic giant stompy robot goodness.
The Timberwolf isn't my favourite clan mech, but it is on my top ten of all mechs and top five in clan mechs.
Only clan mech I like is the Imp. 100 tons of pure stupid.
My favorite mech in MW2. Clan wolf all the way!
That Wolf eventually became ilKlan was a given, even if it took them a full century to finish the job.
Das der Mod die Füße nicht mit dem Boden synchronisiert bekommt, nervt mich.
Wen man genau hin kuckt slidet der mech die ganze Zeit über den Boden.
My baby. Seeing it in all of its glory makes me happy. So versatile and reliable to have on the battlefield.
If you were trying to sell me the mech, you succeeded.
My Favorite Mech Next to the Marauder
And despite being the literal face of battletech, appearing in the main MechWarrior video games and even so far as being in the frickin INTRO to the first three, it is strangely absent from 5. They need to get their shit together. I miss my madcat, as well as the assault class MK 2 and the vulture and Thor as well. And can we not forget the great death known as the Daishi, just bristling with soooo many guns lmao
Dire Wolf ;)
Why would it be in MW5? The game takes place well before the Clan Invasion, and the Mad Cat is a Clan design, so it wouldn't even be available in the IS for several years after the end of the most recent DLC.
I can afford three awesomes for each Timberwolf. Hard pass
I think that comes out to 17 urbanmechs...
I’ve always been a Mechwarrior fan, and a fan of robots. It just hurts to see some of these designs nowadays. Once you learn basic fundamentals of say, walking… you start to see the complete fail in how these mechs move. Just as soon as one leg lifts, the machine wound fall over. Do a test…stand up, lift one leg up, you’ll notice your body finds a center. Now take a wider stance, lift again. And be careful. I love these machines. But it fits kinda suck they will never be a reality. We have to learn how to walk first, before we can run.
Bro…they’re equipped with heavy duty gyroscopes and artificial musculature linked to the pilot’s sense of balance with a neurohelmet. The only way it’s falling over is if they pilot sucks or it gets hit with something big enough and fast enough to overload the gyro.
@@combativeThinker Your confused. This isn’t the Jaeger Project, and we’re not fighting Kaiju. This is Mechwarrior. These aren’t as sophisticated of machinery as the Jaeger. Not even close. Those were neurolinked by design, the Mechs are not. They are more like tanks or fighter jets. But if we are talking Jaeger designs, yes…those work as you mentioned. But basic mech tech does not.
When first spotted by Inner Sphere soldiers. They were not sure if they saw a Marauder or a Catapult. So that was were Madcat came from.
Nope. The *targeting computer* kept going from between identifying it as a Marauder and a Catapult. Hence, MADCAT.
How 'bout a Big Mech with an order to fry!!!!!!
(OG's know what I'm talking about!!!!)😈😈😈
Basically a combination of the Marauder (MAD) with its withering firepower it could easily bring to the forefront, and the indirect fire support of the Catapult (CAT), the Timberwolf was forged by Clan Wolf influenced by two of the most iconic mechs the Inner Sphere ever produced. Thus, the Timberwolf, or better known as the iconic MADCAT thanks to Phelan Kell's tactical onboard display designating it as both MARAUDER and CATAPULT we got the iconic series staple, and arguably the most well-known aspect of all of Battletech itself, and the face of Mechwarrior as a franchise.
Always looks like the arm weapons would hit the legs when moving. Not sure why they designed the mech with such low arms.
I prefer the Bushwhacker anyway!
Icon!
Fun Fact: The Timberwolf got the IS Name of Mad Cat because Targeting systems would identify Mechs by their silhouette, so when IS Pilots first encountered these mechs the Targeting systems would keep switching from MAD for Marauder and CAT for Catapult.....
When I was still in school, I used to play played mechwarrior series up until Mechwarrior 4... Madcat was my favourite go to mech, and I remembered loading it with LRMs, Pulse lasers and heat sinks to make sure it lcam dish out and last in combat.
Speed of a medium mech, armor of a heavy mech, firepower of an assault mech, and jumpjets...
Yeah, I'll take your entire stock
"legendary and feared presence on the battlefield"
Gets absolutely wrecked by my Atlas with Large Continuous Lasers
Like many movies before its time! This was the Maker of the genre today! I had a Presserio back then I believe ? Its been so long but the missiles made a difference for heat and weight......Heatsinks and what not ! LOL ....what a flash back !
Is that mech warrior 5 ?? Last time I checked there was no timber wolf in it.
MWO. There is a nice mod for MadCats and Vultures, though.
@@Deridus
No, this is MW5. It’s the Classic Timberwolf mod by SankaraSamsara on the MW5 Nexus.
Its too bad that all the games after Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, Mechwarrior 2: Ghost Bears Legacy, and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries had garbage stories. Mechwarrior 2 felt like it was worlds apart from Mechwarrior 3 onwards.
I cannot wait for Mechwarrior 5: Clans because I was disappointed that the Mad Cat/Timberwolf was not in Mech5 even though there was a code name called MAD-3r (at least that's the model I have) but it was apparently taken by the Marauder.
Wasn't jump jets available only for Mk2, which was different mech (assault to original heavy)?
"It was perfect, PERFECT, down to the last minute details."
The Inner Sphere was scared shitless, they couldn't believe a heavy mech could be loaded with so much weaponry and armor and still moved so quickly.
The snes game was the first time I saw it in action, it had a decent set of loadouts, and moved fairly quick, but it was big and wide. Despite it's size it had trouble flattening tanks and elementals.
Even though this mech became the titular mascot of the Mechwarrior franchise back in the day, it's kind of ironic that it's a Clan mech. Clans are usually seen as the bad guys of the Battletech universe.
my favorite bit of lore about this mech is how it got its inner sphere name: due to the combination of missile pods and weapon arms, the Inner Sphere targeting computers kept switching the identification between Marauder (MAD) and Catapult (CAT)
Clanners are such glass cannons.
All guns, no armor.
I know, "Don't get hit".
But you can't dodge everything.
no mechwarrior that i've played currently is even close to the original from the 1990's... 2000's... uziel was the best mech and you use to have the option to go heal in repair hangars... they took that out and made the game suck. the aiming sucks the weapons are lame and they don't even balance out the heat sinks. and you cant macro string the weapon pairing like bundles did back in the day you could hit 1 2 3 and use differing lazers missles to time your heat sinks.. and don't get me started on the crappy graphics.. its almost 2024 and we have a game that looks like its 280p
The reason the Timberwolf is known as the Mad Cat in the Inner Sphere is because of its resemblance to the Marauder (the Mad) and Catapult (the Cat) mechs.
when I played mechcomander, getting the timberwolf early, makes the game easier on the next missions
Lol the Timberwolf is such an old-school style mech. Like something youd see in the 90s, while gundam looking mechs (more humanoid) are the type of thing youd see these days. Maybe thats just because Japanese people are keeping mecha alive or something.
Best mech in the BT universe, IMHO. Fast enough to keep up with the mediums, with the armor of a heavy and firepower that competes with assaults.
Favorite way to defeat a Clan Heavy in 1 v 1: call them a wolverine and force them to lose their cool by insinuating that their 'noble founder' was a traitor to the Inner Sphere and a coward and compare the Clans to the Usurper.
Then turn their cockpit into slag with a calmly placed AC/20 round.
...except for its stupid location of the cockpit that is sticking out and occupies the whole torso. Very easy to do headshots against it. Especially felt it in MW4. Never used a Timber Wolf since
Cost? Yeah, you could field three Awesomes. With spare parts.
according to Lore from books, Clan Jade Falcon believed this mech to be cursed because pilots usually died driving it into combat.
To this day, the A-configuration of the first Timber Wolf is a tough and well-balanced Mech.
Timberwolf is number one or two most iconic mech. Deadliest one I now. Can take on any heavy and also take on probably any assault mechs.
Played a game of alpha strike . My last mech was a catapult vs a Timberwolf . My catapult managed to win
This thing can house jump jets?
As if it isn't terrifying enough in the games I played where it was classed as a Heavy Mech without Jump Jets; they can strap jump jets to it?
That is not something I want to encounter; I already hate fighting one as is.
It was awesome to read about it the first time, wenn phelan kell first encountered on in the initial phase of the invasion.
Still remember when his computer couldn’t decide if it was an marauder or catapult 😮
And then he was attacked at far longer range.
Best scene ever in the books😊
Anyone else get nostalgia for playing Mechassault and Mechassault 2 Lone Wolf when looking at this? God I wish it was compatible on the series/one
I absolutely agree! As a proud Inner Sphere Mechwarrior, I do fear this on my tabletop.
I been wondering like honestly curious what the purpose of the arms why not just strap guns and weapons to the hull or core of the mech like I don’t see any use for the arm like punching or something so far
It's a Marauder, no wait a Catapult. Errrg why can't this darned computer make up its mind!
But its head sticks out and is vulnerable from nearly every angle. Mechcommander 2 loved to head cap my Timbys
the way the mech looks though the cockpit is RIGHT there,, yet it never gets cockpit dmg... i dunno man
The MADCAAAAAAAAT !!! Why can't we double thumbs up?
Man that timber wolf model looks funky, I prefer the PGI model
One of only 2 good things to come out of Clan Wolf...the other being Wolf's Dragoons. 💪😎
I am glad to see my mighty marauder continued by the clans into its nearly ultimate form. XL Engine, Ferro-Fibrous armor, Advanced clan weaponry, the Timber Wolf is one of the if not THE ultimate heavy mech, thanks to its versatility, and performance!
Kinda looks like the ED-209 from robocop.
Too bad it’s too expensive and got zerged by cheaper IS mechs.
We are here on earth not wait for alien, my question is what are these machine are going to help us with.we should worry more on tsunami and earthquake not killing people
love you're doing these shorts Baradul keep up the good work, thanks man.
