Jason, this brings back memories of watching my father back in the 60's working on his '66 Beetle. Changing the oil and cleaning the carb because it would get dirty since there was no gas filter. And when he would be swearing because of replacing the rusty muffler that was hard to take off. The good old days!
It's always great when you get a motor running that hasn't for a long time, that first start is always heartwarming. Good to see Mustie1 stop by, and I agree with him..do it now! lol, had my best friend question that when I worked on his classic pulled off the road while driving in a cornfield earlier this yr., when I wasn't going to let it go another mile like it was,, the parts were in the back seat, we had enough tools..Do it now! lol (p.s. it ran like a top after that, he drove it 3 states away on a trip 4 days later, made it there and back w/no problems at all)
Sometimes you have to give them a pep talk. I do this when I'm trying to calm down. I'm so frustrated with my car right now that I can't look at it. Best wishes. I understand. That is really a great looking Ghia. She needs a lot of love
You rock we sould call you Mr. Electronnnnnnnn VW wiring seem to always beat me like a drum, i had a 73 once my wife named it baxter, i had a completely different B name for it always had crazy electrical issues ..Victories time for a happy dance Mustie1 should be proud of you for sure..look out Mustie1 there is a new will it start guy in town.
Thank you brother. My dreams of owning another VW have been put on the back burner for a bit. My wife and I are expecting our first child right around the time I would’ve had the money to get a bug. I don’t mind putting VW ownership on hold for a bit.
It's not just a case of "Will it run?" ... it's more like "When will it run?" You and Mustie1 are good examples for the rest of us .... take your time and get it right!
I used to have a 72 Ghia convertible. It was driveable when I had it but needed a lot of work. Strangers used to come up to me in the street to talk about it or ask to buy it at the traffic lights :) Sadly I wasn't in a position to keep it at the time. I wish I still had it now with all my new UA-cam skills :)
That fast start up was something. Well done going over the basics. Musti1 had a time with his 70 convertible. I would clean the ground cable where the battery cable and the frame meet. Those replacement battery terminals work great until you have to clean them again. They get no love from me.
I was shocked it fired almost immediately , thank you Mark . M1 was scaring me trying to unstick that clutch lol . I agree , those style cable sare not good
Engine Earth strap to battery always a favourite fault. Clue can be which dash lights dim and which don’t. Anything that relies on a good engine earth such as the oil pressure switch will dim or even go out when other lights stay lit up as you crank it over. Obviously the oil light will go out eventually if you build enough oil pressure. To prove the point you can earth the engine to the battery earth using a jumper cable. On a modern car though with a computer you don’t see the same thing, because all lights go back to the ECU !.
They always run, never fail to... I picked a '61 bug up once that hadn't run for years, even it started, it had half an exhaust valve embedded in a piston, it ran but not very well, but out did start.
Hey 5150mxVW! I'm living vicariously through this Ghia project, it's perfect! It seems to be showing its sense of humor with those intermittent electrical issues. I won't give it away in this comment, but your reaction at the end is priceless!
Stubborn 68! Ignition switch? Mechanics in town here in Pierre SD don’t know that my 67 doesn’t have a normal oil filter. And don’t know you have to take off the screen and clean it like you did. Thought they did until he asked why I took off the oil filter. So from then on I took it to a VW dealership mechanic who is retired and does work out of his garage. I only drive it about 100 miles a year plus the 120 mile round trip to my mechanic, so most of the sludge was from it sitting in the garage. Love your channel and videos. Almost time to put 007 up for the winter! First freeze and it’s inside for the winter.
I like driving the Mercedes quite a bit better. 007 is mostly a Saturday and Sunday driver. It’s always been that way. Everyone who sees me drive always has a big smile on their faces. There is only one other older bug around here. Haven’t seen it for years, and it was a black 67 with a sunroof. I wanted to buy it from the first day I saw it but he wouldn’t sell. His wife got really sick and passed away. He must have moved to be close to his kids. It is nowhere to be found. But you’re right, I should put some miles on it before winter! Love your channel and videos! Will be watching!
With that much Marvel Mystery oil in that engine, you're going to be throwing a James Bond smoke trail for a few hours! Good job getting it started up.
It seems to me that your power problems were mainly down to the ignition switch, at least mostly, based on how your dash lights were inconsistent as you turned it off and back on. May still act up, though.. not sure if you can get contact cleaner into it or clean the contacts directly.. i've never worked on one of these.
Nice job getting the Ghia started. It sounds good. There was a lot of Marvel Mystery oil in the motor. Don't rush things, and take your time, and you will get it started.

That's some fine engineering to not fired up in all those years and just wee bit of TLC and on the road again!! German's build good stuff My grand dad used to tell me!! He was in WW2 behind the lines and when german would surrender to the Americans he would check out their machine's! tanks, trucks, artillery guns N stuff he said American tanks where built like old coal burning stoves!! And the German tanks where fine built machines !! If they only had more of them he would always say, America would had a lot more trouble!!
