- 108 km around the Isle of Wight on Saturday 11th July 2021. Great route, great crew and great runners.
First 50km was awesome, just over 5hrs 15 with 3000 ft elevation but then things started to happen…
My gear was fine, pretty much, weather was ideal - most of the time and all in all no excuses… just those damn downhills **QUADKILLERS.
Thanks to all those you donated to my charity cancer research Uk - very generous.
Thanks to my mini crew : wife, son, daughter, dog and father-in-law “Papa”.
Nike wildhorse 7 seem to stand the test of the route but in hindsight, maybe the Altra Olympus would have been better due to the swelling etc.

Great video- I live on the Isle of Wight and always wanted to do it - genuinely inspiring video, thank you
Thanks ! It was a good run! It might be on the cards again soon … 3rd time is a charm
WOW! James! What an incredible route! Seemed like you were really flying that first half! I'm impressed you went for a 40 minute run just a few days later!
It was fun to see a bit of your family in there supporting you. Kids are the best supporters!
Thanks… got to say, still recovering.. just have a full tiredness lurking in the background… but nothing bad (bit like a mini hangover)
Super Great Run !
and your kids are lovely !

Really well done James. Great effort. Thank you for bringing the camera and sharing your race with us.
Thanks Mohamed, I actually just took my tiny insta 360 go2 for the run, just so tiny it help save weight and bulk.

Thanks 🙏… appreciate the feedback
Smashing vid, James. I love the intro. Well done on the 108km. That final 8km must be pure torture.
Cheers Neil… great stimulus for the body to adapt to…the last 8 were indeed shite!!
Well done! Great to see how it went. My feet swell too on the longer outings and my Olympus shoes do the trick! Glad Rufus and the fam got to watch!
Thanks… yes, I have seemed to revert back again to Altra this week… !
Well done James - nice to see the family supporting!
Cheers Adam, they did a good job !
A great looking race and an excellent achievement
Thanks Dan 👍
Congrats James, amazing performance! Thanks for the upload, really enjoyed it!🏃💪
Thanks Yann
Congratulations James. Amazing results and 5:15 for the first 50 km is super fast. Thanks for sharing the lessons learned, the back to back long runs have been the most important change I've made to help me.
Thanks. Back to back long runs seem a good idea 👍… recovery seemed to go ok
Fantastic James, I was waiting for this video. Thank you for bringing us a long for your race journey. Kudos to your family for supporting you along the way!!!
Thanks Sage. Yes, the fam were pretty good! So, I used the insta go 2 in the end, as just so light and small…
Glad you enjoyed it !
Congratulations! Great job. Beautiful scenery. And an impressive job fundraising as well!
Thanks man; was a goof day, feeling back to normal
Great job! Looks like such a beautiful course, and you finished in a great time!
Thanks Steven … was a good one (overall!)
Congratulations James 💥👊💥
Cheers Simon
Great to see you racing James, I've missed the buzz of being in an event. Well done on the finish 💪 You should check out The Highland Fling for a future event 👍🏃
Thanks Martin, will check it out …
Awesome 🤘 108km isn't a joke! I'd love to try that out. Loved to see the fam cheering you on.
Thanks TD… still feeling a little tired but excited about the next 👍👍
@@movemorenowjames can't help but smirk at your comment about Altra maybe being a better choice 😁 just kidding, I know why you chose Nike instead
@@TDMiller I am serious though, my feet were craving Altra , more little toe suffered a bit!
@@movemorenowjames I've been running in Altra for a year now and working from home barefoot since the pandemic, so I find it hard wearing regular sneakers nowadays 😅
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant! Job well done, mate. A big inspiration for my next summer.
Thanks Erik, great to hear
What’s your plan for next summer?
@@movemorenowjames Last summer the plan was to run a 80 k race, but I crashed on an electric scooter three weeks before the race and broke my collarbone. Having struggled with my hip this year, I will only run a 50 and a 60 k. the coming fall. Planning on a new first try on the 80 k next summer, if my 50 year old body will take the abuse leading up to it :-) I feel inspired.
@@ErikRoseJohnsen go for it 👍
@@ErikRoseJohnsen and 50 is still very young, even 60…70…. Maybe 80!
Awesome work James ! 💪
Thanks man, appreciate it 👍👍
Amazing stuff James! Well done buddy! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I think I recognised some places in the course. Did you join those guys along by Seaview? Once again really awesome stuff mate really inspiring. Keep up the good work dude! 😎🤘🏻
Thanks Ben, and thanks for watching. The little mini group was Ryde .. Seaview was a rough point - got very hot. Thanks again, need to get down to the Surrey hills more !!’
Well done mate. I don't think there's such a thing as an easy ultra. That foot issue sounds like no fun at all.
Cheers Mark, i was probably just being a bit pathetic ! Although, the quads were another ball game completely 😬😬
Nicely done!!! Can't you change shoes midways next time?
Will do next time for sure … thanks
Amazing effort. Well done. One question. You mentioned that you need to strengthen the Quads for the downhill work. I tore my Quads twice going down hill on recovery runs.. Why do the Quads work more going down hill then Uphill. Never had any injuries running Uphill..
Thanks…the downhills cause more damage due to the eccentric nature of the moment . The forces cause more impact therefore more damage on the muscle, whereas uphill is more concentric, like pushing … hard work but less impact,
Love the music track at the start. Have u tired the injinji socks (like finger type socks)?
Thanks , I have yes. They are great but sometimes a bit of a flaff first thing in the morning…. Especially if you are trying to sneak out quick before the family get up!
Great video man ! Good on you for hanging in there! Have you tried injinji socks? I had not one single blister or irritaion on my feet on my last ultra when i wore those and the timps. I was blown away hos happy my feet where all race.
Thanks, have tried them but not in race / long conditions but good idea thanks’
@@movemorenowjames You must! Btw James... how many miles in the timp 3s now? 100 miles review coming up?
@@junglisttt actually no, I have been using some many different shoes over the last month have nt got to 100 yet in the 3s
Also XOSkin socks are a popular choice. No complaints here. Great job James
@@-R_H thanks
I don’t know if u have a Iberogast in the UK? Great natural product to put in ur water or drink to help with dodgy stomach, nausea, reflux. I always put it in my race mix just in case.
Thanks Nathan, will check it out
Congratulations for completing the ultra. Excellent stuff. Looks like a decent course. Good to see that your nutrition worked out well. How did the Nike shoes hold up, especially in the damp and more slippery conditions?
Thanks .. the grip was actually fine , a little slippery on wood but they didn’t drain well - at all… this was an issues … also, felt the weight towards the end. That said, the midsole felt great and did it’s job .. thanks again
Brilliant James well done. Did the watch last the distant did the battery drain much?
Thanks. Watch drained to about 33%, i had it all on, maps , route etc … did a good job
@@movemorenowjames nice one. Great piece of kit. How come you didn't go with the Hoka's?
@@Ecoroof1986 because the wild horse react midsole works really well on road & soft trails, with ground feel … that said, maybe Altra would have been better ..: my toes are a little sore at the end !
Congratulations… are you on Strava?
Thanks. Yes, the link is on the main screen
I fancy giving this a bash In 2025
Go for it..
Hi James. Question do you have to get a ferry during the race at some point?
So depends on the direction - they seem to change it every year plus covid effected things. Last year no, but 2019 yes ….
@@movemorenowjames ah interesting thanks. Will try and find out this years route.
