Weeping Water Pump = Recipe For Disaster // How to change a Foxbody Mustang 302 SBF Water Pump
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- In this video I show one of the trickier places to locate a coolant leak from a Fox body Mustang - or any small block Ford 302 cu/in. This 1990 Foxbody Ford Mustang LX Convertible had a very slight leak coming from the weep hole in the bottom of the water pump which is an indication that the shaft seals have started to leak. I show you how to locate the leak and also how to change the water pump in this Ford Mustang

One of my favorite channel for fox content !
Awe thanks bud!!!
@@KASLCustoms So if you see rust in those inlet, hose nipples should you replace the pump. Or just clean up the fittings.
Great video as always brother! Never realized that there was a gasket behind the water pump plate! Thank You for yet again more knowledge sir…
Thanks buddy!!! Yeah it’s definitely a tricky one but as I say: better safe then sorry 😉
Excellent video. I had planned on paying for this service. "Laziness" This video has motivated me to breakout my old tools. Thanks, my friend!
Right on! That’s exactly why I put myself through hell and back doing these videos!!! Glad to hear my friend. Let me know if you have any questions 👊
Great job, I think I might have to do a water pump change on my 93 SSP, and this video sure helped. Thanks a lot. God Bless, Jim 👍👍👍😊
Thanks so much Jim. I always love when I hear that I helped someone out because that is exactly why I do these 🙏👍. Thanks a lot for taking the time to reach out - take care 🦊💚
Love the vids been watching for about a year now, my father passed away in 2011 and left behind his 1991 lx coupe it’s emerald green similar to yours but no body kit or big mods to it but she should be gettin revamped soon and these videos always get me so excited to get behind the wheel of the mean green machine, keep on keepin on man #foxbodyfam
Awe buddy, I’m so sorry to hear about your Dad… that’s a tough one. What a legendary heirloom to leave behind. You will literally think about him every time to see/drive that car. It literally gives me goosebumps! Thank you so much for your kind words and please let me know if I can help in any way 🙏🦊💚
Just got my water pump shipped to the house today for my 89 Foxbody. I ordered the Mastercraft which was a PITA to get for some reason.
I’ve always put them on dry but want to try RTV.
👍
@ water pump went on with RTV and no leaks. Now to figure out why the fuel pump isn’t getting power after doing that wiring mod with the big wires. It works with the power probe but that’s it. Maybe the relay idk. Its probably something simple I just didn’t do right

Thx sir!!! Really appreciate that coming from a fella like yourself 👊. Hopefully you’re finding some time to hit the wrenches on your Fox 🔧🦾
Great video Brother and great advice! Thank you for letting us tag along... That is one extremely clean Vert... 💯👊🏾
Thx pal! You’re very very welcome. Thanks so much for the kind words 🙏🙏👊👊🦊💚
Killer vid amigo!! Keep those foxes running 👊🏼
Thx brother! Will do - #saveafox 🦊💚
Looks just like the one I had… just perfect can’t wait to see more fox content! Already looking for a new one!
Oh really? Same year too? I think this car has had 3 owners…
@@KASLCustoms only difference is mine was an 89! Didn’t have that airbag lol
Ah ok! I was all excited there for a minute. Thought maybe I could re connect an old relationship 🤣👍
I do the same light coat of black rtv on both sides of the gasket. Makes me sleep better at night as well!
Yessir!!!
Do you have a video on how you burped the Fox after you refilled? Also do you use anti-seize on water pump bolts?
It is the same process as you would be used to, leave the cap off the rad and fill as needed. parking on a slight incline helps too. And yes you can anti-seize them
Just don't refill the radiator all the way when you do. I did that when I replaced the radiator and it burped out half a gallon in my drive way. Leave the radiator about an inch low below the fill. Once it starts burping up antifreeze process it won't overfill your funnel. Once the air is out add in more antifreeze.
Thanks for the info. Some people suggest rtv or sealer on the bolts, what's your view on that .
No problem. I put them in dry but I do put a "dusting" of RTV on the gasket surfaces
My 87 olds cutlass supreme with the 307 5.0 really slow was weeping in the same way. Instead replacing the water pump i replaced the motor with something better. Not planned just by chance , win win
Hahaha that’s one way of fixing it 🤣👊
@@KASLCustoms damn right, i got my hands on a 455 and rebuilt it and worked it
That’s awesome bud!!!
I'd have to check, but I think there is a weep hole on the top of the water pump, too. I've got a 91.
Awesome video brother 👍👍
Thx pal!!! 🙏🙏🙏
I’m gonna do the rtv just like you 👍👍👍👍
awesome video man. Thanks for doing these videos.
Thanks buddy! Absolutely 👊
I replaced the charcoal canister and there was only 2 lines on it the 2 small nipples and 2 big ones one big one had a cap on it and the other you can see the filter inside is that correct?
👍
@@KASLCustoms thank you
Anytime sir
Had a leak I chased for a long time on mine. (Hot tip) changed pump still had a leak, ended up being a broken bolt in the timing cover that was so bad it looked like a line up pin! It looked like a water pump leak but surprise! It's hard to find but if u ever run across it
Oh wow - that’s crazy! Thanks for sharing 👍
Hey buddy just looking at an old video of yours, cause I have to replace my water pump. I’ve notice that my pulley is held on with Allen key bolts, and not much room to put an actual allen key on it. Any ideas how to get the bolts off? And tricks or special tools cause there’s not much room at all.
Thanks, love the videos!!
Hey! You could use an Allen key and a 9/16” box end wrench on the other end for leverage 👍
Nice work!
Thx so much bud!!!
I had the same problem on my 92 GT convertible. unform seen spring t-Boned Car accident while I was out for a cruise in my fox I lost it. Wild Strawberry Pony 5 star and Grey GT ground effects like yours. I am looking to find a replacement very hard to find one not hightly modifed or with extreme KHM on them. I'm also in Canada.
Awe that’s too bad 😢. Yes I agree, they are getting hard to find - especially in decent shape…
Hey Gary, is there a torque spec on those 2 bolts holding that plate on? I followed your video and did exactly what you did and damn I'm getting a drip coming from those 2 bolts. I'm going to rip everything apart and start over. I was advised to use gasket sealant instead of rtv. Same problem with the thermostat! I never had these problems with a Chevy 😂
Ah sh!t sorry to hear that buddy. If there is a spec, I don't know it. I've always just closed one eye and curved my tongue the right way and so far it hasn't let me down 😂
@@KASLCustoms 🤣 thanks buddy, I've got new gaskets on the way so I'm going to try the gasket sealant and hope that does the trick!
Good stuff. Not as fun as making them faster but necessary. That is a very nice vert. Is it strawberry red?
Thanks buddy - yes so true!
Yes it is. Original paint too 👌
That's my favorite red. I ordered a LX hatch new back in the day and had to cancel. I so regret it.
Yes it’s stunning! Oh yeah, I bet….😢
It's easy to find those bad seals by pressure testing the system.
Good channel man keep up toe vids. I’m in Toronto ontario and I’m thinking of removing my smog equipment also. I’m scared of tickets from MTO. You ever get hassled for having no smog in your car?
Thanks buddy! No, we don’t have any issues out west 👍
I daily drove my emissions deleted Fox all last summer in the Guelph area and never had any problems with Cops. Most don't know anything about cars and probably don't know Foxbodies even came with cats. And mine is FAR from sounding stock.
Awesome vid, thanks
Glad you like it. Thanks bud!
No issues with the stock gaskets? I’m about to do a WP on my 92 GT and some guys are saying to use felpro instead.
I like the felpros personally
@@KASLCustoms thanks, gonna see if I can get some locally, if not might chance the stocks 😬
ever had a bolt break doing that ?
Yup…
Where's the stuck water pump bolt video??
NEED HELP! I can’t seem to find the water pump to backing plate gasket.
*description of my situation* I replaced a cracked timing chain cover(tcc) but after I did that the two bolts that hold the backing plate made contact with the tcc and caused a leak after I started to refill coolant. Grinded the bolt heads to clearance the new tcc, but now I need to re-seal the water pump to the timing chain and can only seem to find the gasket that goes between the tcc and backing plate. I’ve seen others very similar but the actual gasket material doesn’t perfect line up with the water ways in this water pump like the one in the video. I just need a link to buy that gasket if anyone has it.
Sorry to hear that bud. Worst case scenario you could buy some gasket material and cut you own (very time consuming)….
I don't think those were stock wheels. I believe ponies came later than 90 but not sure what year.
Good call buddy. I actually remember thinking that myself as well but forgot to mention it in the video. That said, the current owner got the car with the ponies on it so…🤷♂️
@@KASLCustoms I have a 90 lx convertible like that but I don't know what the original were for LX's 10 holes maybe or turbines?
Right. I’m going to lean towards the 10 holes I think…
Should've changed thermostat &housing, while you were in there......
Both are still good and easy to access if/when an issue may arise 👍.
I’ll bet you enjoyed doing that smog pump delete..🤣🤣☠️🎭AGAIN…
🤣🤣🤣, my knuckles will only allow me to do one per month 👊🔧🩸
Mines is coming from the over flow Jeez I dunno how im coming across your videos lol but the over flow tank on mines will leak out from some part of it not for sure where but not leaking all out but radiator stays full because I just got mines last week wonder where I can get a original coolant over flow but was I checking it correctly I just
Looked at fluid in the radiator that’s how I checked it before I left the guys house he said the gauge didn’t work but it came up but didn’t come up a whole lot but changed the oil a few days ago and he filled up the res and that’s when I notice it coming out after we got back
You can buy replacement overflow tanks and have the old one changed out in less then 10 minutes 👍
Pressure test would have gave up the ghost within minutes.
