Click the above link to find the correct part for your vehicle. In this video we'll show you how to repair your timing cover gasket and water pump on a 1989 Ford Mustang.
I first thought my water pump gasket was leaking then realized it was the timing chain cover gasket leaking coolant.
Before watching your video I was kind of intimidated since I never changed this gasket before.
Your video gave me the confidence to do this job on my 1986 5.0 Mustang GT.
Thank you!
Pp
Sometimes to make life easier when aligning the timing chain cover at re-assembly, I have purposely omitted the installation of the crank seal until the cover has been secured. This allows me lots of play around the crank to position the timing cover.
Regardless, the job you did looks good. Thanks for the video and sharing the knowledge.
I would highly recommend applying Anti-seize on each of the water pump bolts prior to re-installing them if you are fortunate to get all of the old ones out without any of them braking of do to corrosion!
very impress that this video covers so much on fox body mustang, . I would of like to see the timing chain replace, other than that great video. Great lighting, no complaints on this end. Thanks for the information for future reference.
This is a great video! I’m replacing the water pump and other things on my friend’s ‘92 F-150.
This tutorial was indispensable to me!
Thanks sincerely for uploading this video.
@98APCobra Yes, you want to make sure it is lined up correctly with the woodruff key. Also when impacting it on, go very slowly and carefully, the last thing you want to do is to strip out the threads inside the crankshaft, if it's not going on smoothly, stop immediately.
no, you can replace just the water pump without removing the crankshaft pulley or harmonic balancer.
the Video is a lot of help. all i wanted to do was replace my water pump but 3 bolts broke off in the timing chain cover. they were froze in the cover not the block, i had to bust it off and get a new one. 89 F-150 302/5.0. thanks for posting you video.
I wouldn't call the leak common, but it does happen from time to time. Good luck on the repair!
Thanks for making this Video! It helped with my 90 fox!
And before installation of the water pump,,if it has bolts on the backside remove them and apply sealer on both sides of the gasket or it will most likely leak coolant,, I learned that by replacing mine,, it leaked like a siv ,, mine had no sealer on the gasket ,, check it first,, you will thank yourself later,,👍😊👍
the hackary is strong in this video.
Wow all the debris and whatever else from the wire wheel right into the engine. Nice.
The book calls for 2.7 Hours + 0.4 for AC, and 0.2 with Power Steering, so a total of 3.3 Hours. It took us about half a day with shooting the video and taking breaks.
absolutley amazing haha been working on 88 gt all day to fix that gasket to fixx coolant leak in the exact same spot too bad i didnt find this video till after we had spent hours of wasted time to eventually get the cover off. i guess the seal was really tight but this is awesome and has reassured me that everything i have done according to owners manual has been exactly right too thumbs up for this :D
Excellent video, even if you've done a hundred. I have one to do this morning and it helps to remind me, since I don't do this everyday. Appreciate the time it took you to make it. My leak is on the other side water port. Engineering screw-up. Hey FORD, fix this. Everybody that owns a Ford has had this problem,,,,FIX-IT. THANKS AGAIN, got'ta go
@Jetster007 Thanks! Glad we were able to help! And glad you got your car back on the road. Not enough Fox Mustangs out there anymore :)
@CODxFUNxMAN yeah if it looked like a chunk missing in the cover (usually from corrosion) that is when you will need to replace the cover. The sealant I used was just a spray on gasket adhesive, you can pick it up at just about any auto parts store.
@xxSnIpEiNsAnItYxx It took us about 3 hours to make the video, the actual time required will all depend on your level of automotive repair experience. To be safe, I would give yourself a full day to work on it. This is one of those jobs where you can run into unexpected problems that require more time.
@happyland221 your cylinder heads or engine block may be warped, repeated head gasket failures can be caused by a couple things, either A) The car is overheated repeatedly, or B) the head or engine block is warped due to overheating in the past
@CODxFUNxMAN Unfortunately if it's leaking, the probable cause is a pitted timing cover and the cover itself may need replacing. You can try snugging the bolts up a little bit more and hope for the best, but I hate to say it, but you may need to replace the cover itself. Good Luck

When i did mine i had a bolt break off on the water pump, had to take everything apart and use a easy out tool. Spray bolts down with penetrating fluid and take your time removing the bolts. Broken bolts are no fun.
@cubano1389 It's likely the front main oil seal behind the balancer that is causing your leak, that is the most common place for severe oil leaks on the 5.0 engine.
@50316oscar On your car, you need a special puller, the balancer and pulley are a single piece. You can usually borrow one from a local auto-parts store that has a "Loaner Tool" program.
haha, in hindsight I think I would have left those corner cork pieces out and just used a heavy amount of RTV. After about a year, those corners started leaking, and the cork pieces were all distorted.
Auto Parts Direct To You is a 1988 F-150 5.0 about the same repair job?
If one of the water pump bolts goes thru a coolent passage, use Permatex 14A sealer.
My 94 f150 5 liter is leaking in the exact same place. Crazy design. Having difficulty getting the timing cover off, don’t want to bend or break it. I’m going to take out all the oil pan bolts tomorrow to let it down a bit. Have a new Fel pro blue oil pan gasket I’ll try to slip in, if there is an inch of room. I guess I won’t have to use the cork corners.
Very helpful video; thanks! I'm doing my 1996 Ford Bronco with 5.8L engine, but it's about the same. Four of the bolts that go through the water pump flanges and the timing cover and into the block twisted off just below the heads. Two of them came out with repeated rapping with a hammer and application of penetrating oil over a couple of days. I used a small pipe wrench to get hold of them, as someone else suggested; works great! The remaining two WOULD NOT loosen up despite several soaks with the penetrating oil, a good massage with an air chisel, hammering, etc. So I got out the SawZall with a metal cutting blade and sliced down through the flanges on the covers right against the sides of the bolts, stopping just short of the engine block. It was like cutting warm butter; I love my SawZall. Then I used a big screwdriver to break off the slices of flange, exposing the bolts along their whole length, right up to the block. A little spritz of penetrating oil and a bit of persuasion with the pipe wrench, and they came right out. True, I'll need a new timing cover, but after I removed the old one I found several cracks almost an inch long near two of the flanges, and one right out in the middle of the cover, so it was due anyway. Now I just hope I remember how to put it all back together! XD
@tmaqbool21 I use the spray gasket sealer on all the gaskets, (except for the oil pan where I had to cut the old gasket off). The spray gasket is Permatex High Tack Spray-A-Gasket, really great stuff.
Thanks so much great video, I got an 86 GT that needs a water pump and while I'm at it I'll replace the timing cover gasket and Crankshaft seal.
I like how your block is set up right, with two dowls for the timming cover mine came from blue print I only have one dowl .I'm in a coolent to oil contamination situation. this or lower intake manifold Chinese Edelbrock performer EFI. square ports lined up . did remove oil pan for assurance
That sounds like the distributor/TFI module on the distributor might be going bad,, that's my guess at least. When those start to fail they are heat sensitive and a heat-soak can cause them to not work until they cool down again. Heat-soak is after you turn off a hot engine, everything sits still and the heat radiates into everything and it can make components even hotter.
you solved my problem on taking the timing chain cover remember it is aluminum and it can break i have this motor in a f150 93 non stock version taken from galaxy or a mustang my first encounter was with 289 y block in a 67 cougar no i dont have that one anymore ! have 79-82 mustang but cant afford to rebuild it
The coolant going to and from the water pump passes through the timing cover, You can see the passages that the coolant passes through at 15:12 in the video.
Great video. Thanks for the knowledge.
thanks for the great video I will be doing this tomorrow and this will be a great help. any vids with the alternator upgrade my lights dim at idle and when rpms are raised the lights brighten back up and again thanks.
Hi, actually the 91 Mustang GT has a Timing Chain, and it is extremely rare for anything to go wrong with it. I would suspect something in the starting/charging system is the culprit. Most likely either the battery itself really is dead, or the starter is bad.
I used both, I first glued the gasket to the block, you can see it happen at around 16:50 in the video
@kanona76 I used a high speed surface prep disc.
great job, I did the water pump on my cougar 86 5.0L the video help a lot !!!
you did 1 thing wrong do not put the gasket on the pan their ears on the pan gasket that goes in a slot in the rubber gasket---- putting it on the timing cover makes it easier
Thank you for the advice. Was debating if I wanted to place and seal the cork corner gaskets on the timing cover or the oil pan.
@jkdj5 Adding sealant on that back cover is optional, you should be fine without it.
What did you use to clean the old gasket of the timing cover?
Is a 1988 F-150 5.0 about the same repair job?
Thanx for replying, this video helps a lot.
Very good instructions, thanks!
nice video very helpful i have an 87 mercury cougar xr7 with the 5.0 and almost every thing is the same
Fighting my top timing cover bolts as we speak
Going to be doing this job on a 96 Explorer.
Not 100%, but after watching this video, I think it's the timing cover gasket that is leaking.
Would the job be the same for a 1996 Ford Explorer 5.0L 2WD ???
Thank you! it worked out great but y'all need to remember that the bolts to the water pump will easily snapped off they're usually rusted out it is a common problem in a Foxbody Mustang. !!!!
Heat them first
26:24 at this point is it wise to test for leaks by filling up with water first? I’ve wasted a bit on coolant leakage.
What size wrenched what type did you use to get this bracket and tensioner off with? It would be EXTREMELY HELPFUL TO KNOW
Great video! Thanks
Also noticed a bigger radiator? What size is it? I ask because I see u are still able to run stock clutch fan and shroud with out a problem which us a concerns me possibly rubbing the fan on radiator fins.thanks
Good work excellent job.thank you.
there doesn't seem to be a nut in back of my belt tensioner to remove. Is the 90 stangs the same? The back of the tensioner...all I can see is the end of a screw...or is it back there somewhere?
are you using the same sealer for all the parts, and what is the spray kind that you have?
Great video
if you are going to do this ,there are only 2 bolts that hold in the radiator just take it out, always just get new bolts, they always rust and will be pain when they break the next time ,new bolt kit like 10bucks.also only two bolts for alternator ,just take it off, remove bolts for a c and it will lay on the passenger side of engine compartment out of the way, also just remove thermostat housing and replace thermostat ,the time spent removing and replacing all that will be saved by having so much more room to work and do the job right so you are not doing again because it still leaks
Would like to know how much time the book gives you and how long did it took you?
Hey did you use a timing cover gasket and RTV sealant together or just the RTV sealant on the back of the timing cover?
great video helped me a lot
WHAT GASKET SETS INCLUDE THE CORNER PIECES FOR THE OIL PAN? TRIED BUYIN A FELPRO SET AND IT WASNT THERE?? DOIN THIS SAME JOB ON 93 MUSTANG BECAUSE I BROKE A WATER PUMP BOLT...
mine is leaking from the same spot! I am about to re seal my whole engine, since it is leaking about a quart a month
at 8:02, why would coolant be leaking from the timing chain cover? i didnt think any coolant was going back there? cause i have a puddle of coolant in that exact corner in my 5.0. just wanna understand it before i replace the cover gasket?
It would be almost identical, I know the 94/95 5.0 used a slightly different pulley setup than the fox mustangs,, so removing the accessory brackets might be a little different than in this video, but otherwise everything on the block itself should be the same.
My 1994 Mustang 5.0 always has fresh oil on the front of the oilpan were the cover to oilpan seal goes, and it also has oil on the swaybar wich is right in front of it, my engine leaks oil cuz i have to add about a quart per week , could it be the front main seal or the rubber seal thats goes between the pan and the timing cover ? I need to replace my balancer because it wobbles so i might aswell replace them, it looks like they replaced the waterpump and they did not do the timing cover job.
Hey to remove the tensioner pulley on this car does it come off counter clockwise?
Approximately how long did this take? I'm thinking about doing this to my Lincoln mark vii
nice job....
Do one on a 1997 Ford Thunderbird when you get a chance. Timing Cover gasket and Water pump. thanks
@kanona76 Yours should be the same, you should have a nut directly behind the tensioner, They used this style on 1987-1993 5.0's, If it's not there,, then someone did something custom, LOL good luck with it :)
i have a 2000 3.8 but the damper does not have bolts ,,is the harmonic balancer an damper one unit, or do i need a special tool..
Do i have to remove the crank shaft pulley and harmonic balancer if im just replacing the water pump?
Oh! You guys cheated by not including exactly what you did to get the oil pan corner pieces to go into place. I did this job today...Putting the timing cover on was a major p.i.t.a.! I'm still not sure it won't leak as I wasn't able to completely get one of the pieces in the exact place I wanted it. If it leaks, I guess it's oil pan time...
Hey I put a 98 Grand Marquis with the 5.0 motor in a put it in 94 5.0 mustang GT I used the wiring harness off the mustangs 5.0 and the distributor off the Mustang 5.0 will it work ?
hey i got a 1986 ltd crown vic 5.0 and have a coolant leak around the same area but its not any of the hoses would you say its the water pump?
Do I have to remove the balancer to do only the water pump?
I have new one pace oil pan gasket and new timing cover gasket
now I have water leaking from timing cover gasket and need to replace it
Can i cut that gasket of oil pan in front to fit corners ?
Sorry about language 🙄
What if you get a Lil bit of water in the oil pan can you drain it out and be good?
Pull the oil pan plug and let it drain, but then, after you finish installing everything, I'd pour a couple quarts of oil into it, then drain it all out again. That would probably get all the water out.
electric or mechanical fuel pump?
I was a bit intimidated to try this but after watching this vid Im sure I can do it.
Yo
great job but dont use the high tac sealer for timing cover gaskets
very accurate plans for something like that I found on Avasva
Very detailed video.
I didn’t see you cover the front of the oil pan opening before cleaning the gasket surface around the timing chain. A lot of debris can drop inside the oil pan and cause you to have to drop the pan to clean it out!
He cover it, putting my car back together I left my water pump attached to the timing housing, changed that out two years ago, not redoing it, job is easy but headache comes with it if a bolt giving me a hard time I go take a coffee and attack it again or the next day you have to stay calm, cool and collect or you'll break somethin
do I use sealant on both sides of the gaskets that I apply
Harmonic Balancer should be torqued to 130 foot pounds after the bolt is installed.
Yeah, I find it's much better to torque bolts AFTER they're installed...
Durrr ...
What type of sanding pad did you used to clean the gasket surfaces?
0h
Do the water pump bolts that go into the timing cover run into the block? I have a bit of an issue of broken water pump bolt on left side but a good inch of the bolt is sticking out.had to wiggle the water pump out of the way.
Have you had any luck finding anything out about the bolts being in the block bc I have the same problem please respond as soon as possible thanks
I have a mustang fox body Hatchback gl 1981 3.3 6l automatic here in Peru that I am repairing but I do not have the manual and I would like to know what type of oil the manufacturer recommends for the engine.
www.amsoil.com/MyGarage/VehicleLookupPrint.aspx?url2=1981+FORD+MUSTANG+B
This should give you all the fluid information you're after 👍
I would remove the radiator first to make more room,, and also prevent damage to it,😊
Thank you for sharing
Thank you sir
To replace the water pump do i have too remove that bracket, tensioner, and crank pulley ?
If only the water pump then you don't have to mess with the crank pulley. The belt tensioner & bracket removed give you much better access to the heater hoses that connect to the water pump and the bolts for the water pump.
Thank You!! Subbed!🔧🔩
what about all of the old gasket debris that was all in the motor when you took off the old gasket?? what did you do with that??
Put them in the oil pan😂
Yup. Same place my f150 is leaking from. I'll be doing this job in a couple of weeks.
how much would this job cost me for a 93 mustang gt?
Luckily the balancer does not need to come off to replace the water pump by itself.
For a D.I.Y. 'er I think you did a good job
