How to Potty Train (House Train) a Baby Goat Kid

- If you can house train/ potty train a puppy, you can potty train a baby goat kid.
This little baby's mom wasn't able to feed him, we brought him in to feed him bottled milk by hand.
The only problem with having a "house goat" is that they will pee when ever they feel the urge.
So we used the same techniques that you would use to house train / potty train a puppy, to teach this little guy to pee on a pad and then in a box.

We had amazing luck training our buckling to pee and poop outside . We just constantly took him to the same place and he started to associate it . When he had an accident in the house we set the rag we used to clean it up with in a designated spot outside . We still had the occasional accident in the house , but for the most part he did really well ❤️

frank rumble our goats are dairy goats so we do not slaughter and eat them. This little guy will be part of our breeding program so the girls can produce milk.

WE have a orphaned baby that is five days old. We've been treating him like a puppy and he is sleeping and living with our five dogs. I take him out for potty in the grass just like I trained the dogs. So far so good. I'd say you have to be diligent and patient - use the word potty and stick to a routine . Oh my gosh! That reminds me of my baby Ziggy! Ziggy is a baby Bore goat that was a triplet. We took her in and bottle feed her! She was so much like him, just way more active and a super hardcore Parcore master! 😁💖😋
Omg I had 2 boer goat lambs who were both triplets from different litters. Their Names were Cappuccino and Benji.

We actually just added one to our family and I have him walking n on a leash perfectly, 2 times on the leash and he had it. First time he had no idea what was going on but within a few minutes he figured it pit, second time wad lime this was something b he had always done. I had always heated how smart goats were buti am really impressed with their amazing intelligence. And they loved being handled and loved on, they really are a great addition to any family

Not sure if this would work for goats... we have pugs who were trained from puppies to go in a (very) large litter box. We use a 20 lb bag of equine litter that costs $6 at Tractor Supply Co. Once they learn it they know how for the rest ofb their lives. Best part about equine litter is that it's made from pine pellets. So it just smells of pine. Even after the pee is in there. With poops, you just scoop them up and put them in the toilet. The pine pellets just turn to dust when wet. So itv does not clog the toilet. You can put the litter box in a closet. Works very well! 😃

We had a nigerian dwarf baby that was dystocic. His sac burst before he came out and he got pneumonia. The momma rejected him. We brought him in the house and he stayed in the laundry room with out male English Angora rabbit. The rabbit taught Squirt how to use a litter box. No more clean up on isle 5.

Omg thank you so much for sharing this. My daughter in law got a part pigmy, part Nigerian dwarf kid a couple days ago at 8 days of age. He’s wearing diapers but my son and DIL don’t think to take him out in a regular basis to offer him the chance to potty outside so I’ll definitely tell them how you trained yours. Thanks again!

I had not thought about potty pads. We have one that is about two months old and still less than half of what he should be. He was born smaller than my other Nigerians. So we are looking for some way to teach him. We tried little box and no luck. At the very least to get us through until weather gets warmer.

@@SurvivalistGardener Even 4! Lol my rescue nanny had 2, a couple weeks early from when I was told her due date. I was holy unprepared, but Betty was tired of being pregnant, and she had the most disrespectfully adorable kids, I've ever seen. Like, who do they think they are being that heckin cute!? In 35 years of ranching, I've never seen cuter and they are also the smallest kids I've ever seen. The little girl was BARELY bigger than my hand and neither one, weighed more than 2lbs. If that! 2 are a handful, 3, 4, 5!? The little billy almost died the night he was born, there was a lot of crying, praying and pacing that night. My vet was fantastic about stress though. Petey, was windswept and his fetlock was so weak it was buckling under him, any time he tried to stand up or walk. I found them literally right after the little girl was born out in the pasture, mom was still cleaning her off and chewing the umbilical cord. Immediately I knew something was wrong with the little billy, he wasn't moving normally, and he was very weak for some reason. I was determined not to lose Petey though. In the last few months I saw a man kill himself right in front of me, and I had to put a dog down that was hit by a car, I still haven't found his owners. I have watched to much death happen right in my face, I wasn't going to lose Petey. I sat and watched them, and mom wouldn't let them nurse. She would kick them away, and Petey tried to nurse 1 time, but he didn't trying again. He was just to weak, and as much as I didn't want to move them, they were out in the pasture cause again, they were weeks early and it was fixing to storm something awful. I live out here completely alone so, it was all pretty overwhelming. I don't know what I would have done with more than 2! The Lord heard my prayers though, and Petey made it through the night and is thriving. Him and I have a incredible bond after that night. He wants to be with me more than he does his mom, which worried me because she finally got it together and started feeding them, and I didn't want him to be rejected because our bond. I have no problem bottle feeding if I need to but I obviously want him to be with his mom, for many reasons lol. So far, he is being taken care of by her. Even when I'm with him. Question, when 3 are born, can they survive and keep healthy with just mom? Taking turns nursing or something? Or do any other kids after the 2, need to be taken and bottle fed? I know that obviously if 5 are born, 1 or 2 need to be bottle fed, but what about 3 or 4? How common is having 3 or more kids? I've never seen a goat have more than 2, and I was planning to start breeding again but now, I'm hesitant lol. My pets are the most valuable and cherished things I have, their health and we'll being is my priority. I obviously don't know everything I should, and there will be no breeding until I do, so any tips would be awesome lol
@@Luna-hk5qg I have had 3 born a bunch of times...they do fine. and they take turns. But you may have to bottle feed them once they get bigger...We usually bottle feed them after 2 weeks, as we want our goats to socialize with humans, as opposed to being dam raised. People tell us all the time, that our baby goats are friendlier than most goats they have visited at other farms, when they are thinking of buying baby goats.
@@SurvivalistGardener Ok, and after 2 weeks when they start to be bottle fed, are they completely weaned from mom and brought into the house or their own stalls away from her? House seems easier because of how often they need to be fed, right?
@@Luna-hk5qg We take them away from their moms and raise them separately, not necessarily in the house. Usually we raise them in the house when they are an only child. If they have a sibling, they are fine being together. Once they are feeding well on the bottle, we sell them and let our buyers raise them and feed them, so that the new owners can bond with the goats themselves. And of course, we use the milk from the moms once the babies are gone, for our own household, and my wife makes every dairy product that people would otherwise buy in a grocery store.
My dad found a baby goat by our cow farm,on our land,so he brought him home,that happened yesterday,so now I have a kid,we are going to keep him,and get a couple of females.

I don’t know if this is a stupid question but instead of moving the puppy pad closer to the door could you just throw them outside in the same spot?
I know I'm 11 months behind, but I was wondering if this would work for a lamb as well? We have a lamb inside for the same reason you had Rudy inside and we are trying to figure out the potty situation. He does wear Pampers and he doesn't mind wearing them but we are just running through them like crazy!
My momma Goat just had 5 girls, I pulled the smallest two for bottle feeding. I was shocked when she pushed out that 5th one
I just got a 3 day old baby goat as a rescue, mom has Mets & couldn’t nurse. I’m relieved to know that I am potty training right! I’m just training her like if she was a puppy lol, ty! I’m inexperienced with goats so I’m trying 😀

He is doing great! He is 3 months old now and he has moved into our main barn with his half brother who is his daily companion and roommate. We are keeping them both as part of our breeding program for the future, since our older boys are getting on in years. Little Rudy is still the most loving, fun and cute little boy we have ever owned. Taking him in, saving his life, and raising him inside during that time, was one of the best decisions we have ever made.
SurvivalistGardener i have had two i bottle raised indoors, then later they moved outside. But i NEVER potty trained them! they wore diapers and i kept them in a humane makeshift pen when i wasnt right there with them. Wow impressive!

Yes. And even though he is a couple of months old now, and has moved back into the barn, he is still the most loving and sweet goat that we have ever raised.
A friend has a little baby goat that started outside and would do his business in a corner near the back of the barn...now he is an indoor goat he uses a doggie door and still goes out by the barn. NO ONE EVER TRAINED HIM ...Weird !

I'm currently training a goat (2 weeks) with puppy pads in a box as well. I'm curious how this is going after a few months. were you completely successful? We're still having accidents and he poops wherever he is, which is only in the box about 1/3 of the time.
We were able to train him so that when he got the urge, he went into the box by himself. Eventually we took him back out with his siblings, because he was much stronger and able to fend for himself. We hand fed all the babies until they were 10 weeks old. He is still much more oriented toward people than any of his siblings, very loving, and would rather be with people (when given the choice).

He was less than 2 weeks old... way faster than it takes to house train a dog.
My baby goat just ripps the pads to shreds and drops little blackberrys everywhere like she has no clue whiles she hopping around I tried to potty train her but it's not working so we are looking to moving her outside but she screams when nobody is outside with her so idk will be a tough transition I imagine
Goats are herd animals and extremely social creatures. They have a very tough time being by themselves. They need some sort of companion, even if it is just the family dog during the day. They will follow you around like a dog if you let them. One thing you might try is putting her in a dog crate at night in the home. Use puppy pads on the bottom to catch any accidents, and we have even had some little ones hold their pee and poop all night, only to go outside when we take them out first thing in the morning. If a dog can do it, then a goat can do it.Just train them the same way you would a dog.

Well, we've seen it pee, but what about pooping? I wouldn't think it possible to train a ruminant animal to poop in a certain place, as ruminants & other grazing animals have no conscious control of their elimination. We always put a diaper on lambs when we want to play with in the house. Pampers is missing out on a major marketing demographic by not offering a version of their product with a tail cutout...
I make my own out of fabric! Just put sanitary pads to make it disposable, the girls have cute ruffle butts :)

We have a homestead so our goats make milk for us all the time. So when we need to feed babies we take the mom's milk and we put that in baby bottles. That's what we did for this little guy. But you can get formula for goats specifically at Tractor Supply. Many of the people who buy goats from us do that.

Yes. It worked... And he was potty trained to go outside whenever he needed to go. We eventually put him back out with his siblings. (This video shows him as an adult : ua-cam.com/video/g-pMxTRKMiw/v-deo.html ) He was the first that we potty trained, but we have had many other baby goats that we brought into the house (that were the only kid born to a litter and goats dont do well by themselves) so each one we have potty trained to go outside. These goats are smarter than the smartes breed of dog, so it only makes sense that if you can potty/house train a dog, that a goat can do it. And EVERY goat that we house trained did so in less than a week.

I'm considering a baby goat.. a dwarf goat.. or pygmy goat. Training them to potty is this with popping as well
Yes. Stick with Nigerian Dwarf goats. Much friendlier and produce more milk than pygmys.

Eventually he/she will have to be able to go outside. They can live in a shed, but will need air, and protection from the elements, cold, rain, drafts, and too much heat. Make sure you do not let them feed on treated (pesticide) grass. Pick up my book on amazon- Secret Livestock of Survival, it talks about raising animals discretely, and talks specifically about raising goats.
How do you get them to not eat the pad....our goat, Tator, eats everything....plastic, paper, cords...puppy pads😂😂😂. I love her though❤

Peeing has been easy. It’s the pooping that seems impossible! Every one of mine just drop a deuce any and everywhere they want! Even when in a full run and happy dance down the hallway, they will just let it rip! LOL
Pooping usually follows the peeing. Once we get them trained to go outside (they hold the pee and save it for outdoors), when we take them out and they pee, the poop usually follows thereafter. We have one girl that has been coming in the house for 5 months now, and she let's us know when she needs to go out.
do they respond to praise?
They are smarter than the smartest dog. They can be loving and effectionate (at least the Nigerian Dwarf breed is). They love praise, petting and rubbing their back/neck muscles. This little boy is over 5 years old now and he is still my best buddy. And has had many kids of his own now.

The poo is easy to pick up. The pee- not so much. But he moved out to the barn to be with other goats after 2 months when he was big enough. He still is my little buddy though, even though he is full grown and has sired many babies of his own.
