    I'm a Brit and I used to live in the States. The Americans I met love our comedy shows and our sense of humour. They hate American rip-offs of our shows just as much as we do - it's just media companies who are always looking for the next big buck. That's why they quickly bomb with US audiences.

    • @shanearnold7781
      @shanearnold7781 7 років тому +10

      As an American, I can confirm this

    • @MrBannystar
      @MrBannystar 7 років тому +10

      @577AllWell - absolutely no fucking way. The only people who think that are from America. The American Office has the dubious distinction of being the least shit American adaptation of a British programme. I guess it comes down to 2 drastically different styles of comedy, but the original is near perfect. Not much comes close to it.

    • @shanearnold7781
      @shanearnold7781 7 років тому +8

      MrKunt I think it comes down to the fact that we got to spend more time with the American office. Yes, David Brent is hilariously inept and uncomfortable to watch, and we all rooted for Tim and Dawn to get together, and Gareth was always fun to watch, but we only got 14 episodes with them to enjoy. While the longer length of the American version means there were some duds in there and the British show has a higher batting average overall, we got to see the characters fleshed out more with the US version, including a steadier buildup and more rewarding payoff to the Jim-Pam dynamic, the background characters getting developed more, and Michael Scott becoming more endearing. I love both shows to death, don't get me wrong; I revel in how extraordinarily uncomfortable the British programme is, and the characters are well done, but I think this is the sole time the US managed to exceed the original in quality.
      Everything else we've tried to adapt is shit though.

    • @MrBannystar
      @MrBannystar 7 років тому +3

      ***** "Anyway, piss be upon you!" - haha you're too kind....allah snackbar ;)
      Shane Arnold I wouldn't begrudge anyone for liking the US version more, but I love the original for how subtle the humour is whereas what I've seen from the US verison, the comedy is more obvious and not really to my taste. Also, the fact that it went on for so long is usually a detriment to US shows. We keep them short and sweet in the UK and comedies don't usually overstay their welcome.
      Plenty of my mates like the US version, but my favourite US sitcom would have to be Frasier, and I've always been meaning to get into Curb Your Enthusiasm a lot more. .

    • @shanearnold7781
      @shanearnold7781 7 років тому +4

      MrKunt I love Frasier to death as well; I'm a huge fan of the witty humour it provides, which is something I like about many British comedies as well.

    Lesser American sitcoms love that "too dumb to breathe" character stereotype. It always seems so lazy.
    But Percy, Prince George and Baldrick are often insufferably stupid, but work brilliantly somehow. I guess that's just the brilliance of Blackadder. I love that Tony Robinson went on to make Maid Marian, which seemed to share a lot of the dna of Blackadder.

    Jack if you will, you may not know they revisited the 1770 whatever theme and this time successfully in the Tim Allen show Last Man Standing or at the very least elements there of. If you view it you'll see what I mean. And is it possible for you to post a compilation of some of the best sarcastic British tv shows of the last 50 years ? If you can find them that is, the BBCs archive is dreadfully managed even losing episodes or scenes from early Dr Who. I truly dispare at the losses of such shows as Yes Minister, Bastard (about a Blackadder type cabinate official ) and one whose name escapes me that was the pinicle of British sarcasm, damn my memory. You'd be doing an old man a great favor, thank you.

    Blackadder needed a whole season to get good, we can't really hold a bad pilot against 1775.

    • @JD_13
      @JD_13 2 роки тому

      Disagree. A remake has the advantage of a tried and tested, and fully fleshed out show to be inspired by. The first season of Blackadder was not great, but they built on a new concept of flipping the personalities around and learned from mistakes. The 1775 pilot was a total regression and was inexcusably dumbed down, for a show that had a blueprint to steal from.

  • @seanmorris3276

    The premise could be done fairly well, just get Ben Elton to transfer his ideas for an American audience. One of the best things about Black Adder aside from the fantastic and witty dialogue, acting from Rowan Atkinson especially, was the constantly changing time periods. To see a Black Adder-esque character weasel himself through American history could work perhaps..

  • @insuspence
    @insuspence 7 років тому +1

    the things that Black Adder did really well that I think was lost in translation, was that it adapted commedia dell'arte to both the screen and a modern audience. The characters in Black Adder are all wonderful interpretations of commedia stock characters, like how Black Adder is Brighella, a crafty, quick, unscrupulous servant who was often paired with Arlecchino whom in turn is Baldrick. I haven't seen the show in a while but another obvious one I can think of is Stephen Fry's General as Ill Capitano- a seemingly manly and courageous captain who is actually a timid coward afraid of most everything. And I am sure if you go through the other main characters there is always a commedia stock character to match. Basically if you want to have a successful adaptation of Black Adder, you shouldn't focus on translating Black Adder to a modern American audience, but rather focus on translating commedia dell'arte to a modern American audience.

    My suggestion would be for them to do an American version in which there was a Blackadder and a Baldrick emigrated to the colonies prior to 1776 for the first season. There are all kinds of sharp jokes they could make about the era(I.e.the womanizing of the Founders, or crazy Puritan practices regarding witchcraft.) After that, series 2 would be oriented around the civil war period and set in the Illinois wilderness. Series 3 should be in the gilded age and the extreme inequality of the time will be the primary joke. A Melchett/Wellington character could take the form of Teddy Roosevelt. Series 4 could be in WW2, with lots of jokes about the conditions of the naval vessels in the Pacific.

      The first season is piss poor, they have decent plots but I found it has no focus, such as, despite the show being called Blackadder, Brian Blessed's character seemed to have the star role!
      I've looked into this and Rowan Atkinson was largely responsible for the script for season 1 whilst 2, 3 and 4 were written solely by two other actual writers. This is so easy to see when you consider that most of Atkinson's characters are weedy, scrawny and pathetic creatures. Not to discredit him, I think he's a brilliant actor and his pronunciation, delivery and expressions are so original but he doesn't seem to make use of this in his own work. Although his physical comedy's pretty good for physical comedy, deciding to refuse Mr Bean the use of Atkinson's vocal cords is a worse plan than when Abraham Lincoln said, "Oh I'm sick of kicking around the house all day, let's take in a show."
      ^ To prefer 1 to 2 blows my mind! The one where he has the bag over his head impersonating the people who he killed to get a week off work (in S2) is the best episode of them all, surely!?

      You should see a Serbian imitation. The British original was translated as "Crna Guja", and the imitation was named "Crni Gruja", who is also a lead character, and a nephew to "Crni Djordje"- Black George vest known as Karadjordje, his Turkish nickname. He is a famous historical figure and was a leader of a first Serbian uprising.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara%C4%91or%C4%91e
      The first season with Sergej Trifunovic in leading role was the most successful and it most closely follows the style of Blackadder.

      +Vicvic W exactly. Americans shouldn't EVER remake our shows because they ruin them, look at the crap USA remakes of Inbetweeners and Red Dwarf that got canceled quickly.

      I'm not a fan of any remakes or reboots ever, let sleeping dogs lie. That doesn't mean Americans don't make good comedy, it's just that we have different tastes.

      Based on what channels typically do to get a million subscribers I would be perfectly fine with this channel not reaching a million subscribers. More yes, but not a million.

    Comparing Black Adder to 1775 is like comparing a Boeuf Bourguignon to a pile of hamburger/mince with gristle in it that's been sitting on the counter too long so that even the family cat doesn't want it anymore.

    _Till Death Do Us Part_ vs. _All in the Family_
    _Steptoe and Son_ vs. _Sanford and Son_
    _The Man About the House_ and its spin-offs vs. _Three's Company_ and its spin-offs
    …and to complete the three f*ck-ups that we as Americans did to John Cleese, considering that I'd rather watch an episode of his with Graham, Michael, Terry J. or Carol than its American equivalents…
    _Fawlty Towers_ vs. _Payne_
