When you're writing a comedy show I guess it helps if you have a cast of comedians making jokes about themselves, which is exactly what the British version had. Simon Bird is first and foremost a comic and was previously in a sketch group with Joe Thomas, James Buckley is also a stand up comedian. They even had Greg Davies - a high school teacher turned comic - play their teacher.
I'm Australian and I don't give a fuck about the swearing in it haha. I'm talking about all the jokes about sex. I think it is hilarious but it would be awkward to watch with my parents cause it is not their type of humour
I think another thing that makes the British version better is the look of the actors. The guys look like people that were at your school. The guys in the US version look like they came out of an acting agency.
I do not like the guy who plays jay in the american show. Maybe it's just because i'm used to the british one but I feel like the guy who played Jay in thr UK version fitted much better than the US version

The main thing is with the british version the characters are all realistic, they feel real and you can see why theyd be friends, the american ones feel manufactured and fake as hell.
I'd also like to add: The scene where Simon is drunkenly talking to Carly, another reason the joke fails to land is because in the US version, he's standing right up close to her, his face inches from hers. He seems predatory, as though he's about to make a pass at her. It's not funny, it's creepy. The UK version has him standing on the other side of the room, so he poses no immediate physical threat and just comes off as pathetic more than anything else.
Also the timing is totally off, he immediately says the punchline, making it look like he intended to say it twice, whereas UK simon takes a longer time to say it, which is not only funnier, but more fitting for a person in the drunken state he was.
fr, first thing I thought when he showed it was how uncomfortably sexual-assaulty it felt. Like I'm not relating to or sympathizing with this drunken loser trying to awkwardly hit on girls, I'm thinking Carly should slap him real hard cause he needs to back the fuck up.

They main thing is that the Inbetweeners were based off real events the writers had and it justifies growing up in the U.K. Perfectly and you just can't carry that out to other countries
I think the last successful American sitcom to do this was The Big Bang Theory, and everyone over here hates The Big Bang Theory. I think we’ve finally grown out of that phase. I really like the more casual vibe I get when watching British sitcoms though. Ours definitely look larger than life and they end up just feeling less funny.
i actually think Superbad is a better comparison with the UK inbetweeners than this attempt at a remake. Very different stories and characters on the whole, but the relationships in both felt genuine and the quick interactions between each friend group felt authentic. Also the buying alchohol scene has some obvious similarities with Will/Fogle both dressed to impress and getting laughed at despite their confidence.
yeah ikr, only time they succesfully remade summink of ours is 'the office' and thats only cus they didnt really remake it just took the concept and changed it completely
Am I the only one bothered by the US character design? For one they made Will a stereotypical 'hot nerd', the whole point was that Will was meant to be a complete nerd who had no chance with girls, but they've made him completely attractive and still try to push the narrative of no girls going for him. Neil's design just...didn't work. His old design was that of fitting a stereotypical UK teenage boy and while this is depicted for America I still don't think his emo hairstyle fit well. Jay's one just didn't work at all, at least for me. I feel as if they went too far with creating him to be the average teen who wouldn't have a chance with girls and instead just made him very stereotypically unattractive. Simon didn't have statue of liberty hair.
the best thing about the inbetweeners was like- it was so very British- you had the gloominess of the sky and the strange movements, its definitely more relatable and it sort of felt like you were there
Kyle Dickinson Americans won't understand it, my cousins are from Florida and English humour just leaves them scratching their heads. trust me mate our humour is completely lost on them unless we explain it to them!
Michael Graveline i never said your humour was bad, your humour is different, and that inbetweeners is a good insight into our humour as apposed to watching idiots like john oliver. And always sunny, is one of my favourite TV shows as well and louis CK being one of my favourite stand ups, (not a fan of his show though) also the UK version of shameless is a lot better, a lot more natural, earlier seasons are a bit outdated though. And the reason the office was successful in the US because it had good actors with british writers. Oh and some stand ups id recommend to you are: jimmy carr, frankie boyle, russel howard, hugh dennis, lee mack and jack whitehall, all varied really different styles, id avoid people like peter kay and michael mcintyre, they're just embarassing.
Kyle Dickinson i wasnt even aware shameless was a remake!!! Holy crap. You learn something new everyday lol...and i wasnt accusing you of anything like that (sorry if it appears that way). I just think even though there are some differences in our humours for the most part humour is universal. Like when i first saw the inbetweeners on netflix a couple years ago, as an american, i never found myself lost or really even a moment where i didnt understand the humour. Regardless of what our tv comedies may be, I just really dont think theres much difference between our humours. Btw have your ever seen a show called the increasingly poor decisions of todd margaret? Super funny show from david cross that literally combines british and American humour. Worth a check if you havent seen it. And jimmy carr is hilarious! Also glad to see john oliver isnt held in high regard over there. I think hes overrated but he does have a following over here.
@@Yessirree why did you say the word? Because people like me are autistic and just get offended on that word. People who are autistic have the same right as other human beings. And do you know what autistic means?
That's a hard one to call as a Brit. Their stereotypes are obviously going to be different to ours so maybe making Neil a hippy and Jay fat would have been more relevant to an American audience.
the problem was that rather than changing it so that it actually depicted THEIR high school life with their humour, they just took ours and tried to roll with the punches and it didn’t work. they didn’t change anything in their version
My favourite thing about Neil was even though he wasn't very intelligent somehow he was the least creepy of his friends, probably because he wasn't trying so hard. Also "haunted like Harry Potter and the Bible" is just the best line.
The slang really brings the UK version home as well. It's just so unexpected from a foreigner's point of view, whilst the US version is just the regular ol' regular.
I didn’t even know the American version existed until my British friend told me about it so I had to see how bad it was. American humour is absolutely horrid except for the exceptions.
I have a feeling Americans don't understand British humour therefore when they try these horrendous remakes it never really works out. Other programs like Top Gear, The Office & Shameless are classic examples of this issue.
The American comedies tend to seem a bit more glossy and glamorous? It’s like American shows are terrified to cast weird looking people. Or even normal looking people!! What makes the English ones work better is that they seem more real and grotty which makes it more relatable. The reactions over over the top and unrealistic. Edit:just as I finished typing this you said exactly the same thing lol
It's just way too much of an English programme, there's no way they could have done it successfully without it being annoying and cringeworthy to the English imo.
Fun fact Matt Smith was apparently the second choice for Will and they said the reason they went with Simon Bird because when Will went off on his long rants it was funnier when Bird did it cos he looked more like a loser. When Matt Smith did it he looked like a dashing hero standing up for what was right and the writers said it wasn't as funny.
Are you talking about Dr Who Matt Smith? It doesn't really sound right given Smith was born in 82. That means he would have been 26 when the Inbetweeners first screened.
Why can't Americans just watch the British version, do we speak a different language or something? It would be like us Brits making British versions of Frasier, Friends or the Big bang theory, it would be ridiculous. We enjoy American shows without remaking them. Do Americans believe a show can only be good if it's American?
I personally think it's because American networks don't give the American audience enough credit for being able to _get_ humour outside of the U.S. They feel the need to Americanise our shows to make them palatable for the U.S audience. In reality, there are plenty of Americans who love and definitely _get_ British humour. Having said that, I think some of our shows loaded with profanity might cause issues on certain networks too.
ImGoDzZz I don’t get all the humor, but I think I get most of it. Some of the best shows are British. I don’t get why they would copy the UK version scene for scene, for the US version. Shows like: The Inbetweeners, Peep Show, and Fresh Meat, and the IT Crowd are all brilliantly written and I miss them all.
I agree. I'm American and I love British TV shows but the networks definitely don't think most Americans will appreciate them. After several trips to the UK and watching a lot of British TV, I get most of the slang but there are still pop culture references that go over my head. One of my favorite shows, Mongrels, often refers to British TV personalities who I'm completely unfamiliar with. Still, I was pleased to get this reference in the UK Shameless when Veronica refers to the backyard of her house as "looking like Steptoe's". Which reminds me, the one good American remake of a British show is Shameless, in my opinion. The first season of the American version stuck pretty closely to the British one but it's really gone off in its own direction since then. I've consistently enjoyed it.
simonster -909 small group of patriots with France and Spain backing them too. Why do a lot of Americans believe that Americans single handedly won the revolutionary war 🤦♂️
@@simonster-9094 why does everything always have to come back to you "WiNs" in war hundreds of years ago when talking to americans. no one cares u won a war hundreds of years ago. literally no one
I think that one of the biggest differences in a big between UK comedies and American comedies, is that the people from the UK carry a lot of resentment in they're humour which comes across as very dry and relatable (especially if you are British yourself). For example Will in inbetweeners UK is brilliant as he wants to be friends with all the others but absolutely resents them at the same time which really works. I find in American comedies, they find it hard to represent a feeling of resentment when trying to be funny and rely too much on just acting silly. I found this especially while watching shameless uk/us versions. I think the UK frank Gallagher plays the roll brilliantly as he can come across as very relatable as being the funny drunk but you can also see how much he resents everyone around him too. The American Frank Gallagher just seems like someone playing a hollow drunk person and doesn't come across as authentic and funny. And another thing not comedy related, I find is American shows always try to force a feeling of melancholia on to scenes that don't need it. Like a sad scene will have this soppy sad music over it to force you to feel sad, instead of the actors doing it themselves
Why is there a UK version of Impractical jokers 🤢🤮🤮? Some shows just cannot be remade. Thats the end of it. Don’t blame the whole show being bad on the whole country lol
it’s mostly cause Americans right now are completely bankrupt of original ideas. Every American movie/tv show is either a remake, sequel, reboot, ripoff, or adaption of a book.
Also notice the US version like most of their sitcoms and "reality" shows has a lot of background music to dramatise it. The UK version has no little background music which builds a lot of suspense and emphasises the jokes a lot more
For me I think it’s just the accents, everything I actually laugh at is always British because it’s so relatable and the way we talk and have all the slang words it just sounds funnier. American comedies always sound so forced to me *oh and also we aren’t afraid to offend people 😂
Uk: a long scene showcasing different points of view on a scenario which creates realistic expectations in British culture. US: "ahah people getting hit in head! We made a funny!"
there really doesn't need to be an American version of British stuff or vice versa does there, surely the popularity of Monty Python's in the USA and the Simpsons in the UK shows us that
Yeah the office really only shares it's name and the very basic concept of odd characters in an office, the USA version of Shameless was so unnecessary and the UK version of married with children was also not needed, the only time i can think of where an American version of a British show has worked is house of cards
Exactly ! They did this exact same thing with skins. The situations, storyline and humour just doesn't sit right when it's American-ised. I'm Sure Americans have their own scandalous and relatable comedies so it makes nooo sense. Lol
@@adeallapashtica9003 The US office sorta worked though. I prefer the UK one, but the US one is its own show. This is an absolute shitshow of "comedy", like someone wanted to merge legendary British television with diary of a fucking wimpy kid.

ik this is an old video and no one will probs see it but the music in the proper one are all songs that british people know and love so even when they are played it makes it better
I remember when the American version came out and I thought it was lame and unfunny. I didn't know it was a remake, now I want to see the original show cause it actually looks entertaining.
I watched the original first and asked myself "How bad can the US version be?" It was bad in comparison, however it made me appreciate how well written and funny the original was
Such a shame how after the office literally gave American TV producers an instruction manual on remaking British TV they still can't get even the basics right.
American television is 100% allowed to show blood, gore, and sickening imagery (Walking Dead as one example). But you can't say "fuck." I mean... think of the children! They can't hear the words they use daily on tv! That'd be a sin!
42jwiener In TWD, they allowed the N-word to be said, but not fuck. This is why I hate AMC when they aren’t focused on Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.
The US needs to stop doing this, they've tried and failed with both Skins and The Inbetweeners. U.K. Young adult comedies are my favourites, Fresh Meat, Bad Education, Some Girls, Chewing Gum, My Mad Fat Diary...and like even UK Being Human had a lot of good comedy 😂😂😍😍
I suppose it's funny to British people who have already watched the British episodes and can make comparisons. It's so bad it's good. But the American one is otherwise pretty meaningless.

I’m sorry but Neil’s line at the pub. “It’s like one of them ghost stories. Like Harry Potter. Or the bible” kills me every time
Am I the only one bothered by the US character design?

I'd actually suggest Americans watch the UK Inbetweeners, it's a good insight on our humour
Kyle Dickinson Americans won't understand it, my cousins are from Florida and English humour just leaves them scratching their heads.
trust me mate our humour is completely lost on them unless we explain it to them!
As well as Scottish Welsh and Irish humour.

Another good part of the British version was the fact that the boys are played by actors in their twenties
Attempting an American version of this was just a really bad idea

@@OldAussieAds Simon Bird was born in 1984 so not hugely younger. All four of them were way older than their characters.

Having said that, I think some of our shows loaded with profanity might cause issues on certain networks too.
jpwoody76 Americans don't get British humour.
ImGoDzZz I don’t get all the humor, but I think I get most of it. Some of the best shows are British. I don’t get why they would copy the UK version scene for scene, for the US version. Shows like: The Inbetweeners, Peep Show, and Fresh Meat, and the IT Crowd are all brilliantly written and I miss them all.
pod4477 Yeah I agree but American humour is more silly and childish while British humour involves alot of vulgarity.
Good show not produced in the US: *exists*
Americans: Let's make a terrible version that doesn't show why the original show was popular at all!!

Like a sad scene will have this soppy sad music over it to force you to feel sad, instead of the actors doing it themselves
bad acting in the US remake
Gotta blame the director as well.

Why Americans gotta ruin all of the great UK shows for
Jin's Hoe hello army 👀👀
Because a large proportion of Americans are too stupid to understand English.
Right, like the office. completely ruined
it’s mostly cause Americans right now are completely bankrupt of original ideas. Every American movie/tv show is either a remake, sequel, reboot, ripoff, or adaption of a book.
Bob Tillich I wouldn’t say ruined, more just went for a different vision.
The American version of the inbetweeners is an *insult* to the amazing original
So glad I grew up in England so I could watch the good one
Also notice the US version like most of their sitcoms and "reality" shows has a lot of background music to dramatise it. The UK version has no little background music which builds a lot of suspense and emphasises the jokes a lot more
"Like Harry Potter or The Bible"
UK Neil is funny
For me I think it’s just the accents, everything I actually laugh at is always British because it’s so relatable and the way we talk and have all the slang words it just sounds funnier. American comedies always sound so forced to me

Uk: a long scene showcasing different points of view on a scenario which creates realistic expectations in British culture.
US: "ahah people getting hit in head! We made a funny!"
there really doesn't need to be an American version of British stuff or vice versa does there, surely the popularity of Monty Python's in the USA and the Simpsons in the UK shows us that
Bot23 yes but the office adapted a lot more from the UK version and had very little similaritys unlike what the inbetweeners and others haven't done
Yeah the office really only shares it's name and the very basic concept of odd characters in an office, the USA version of Shameless was so unnecessary and the UK version of married with children was also not needed, the only time i can think of where an American version of a British show has worked is house of cards
yeah, I agree the Americans have butchered a lot of great and original British ideas like Life On Mars, Top Gear, Faulty Towers etc.
I never knew there was an American Fawlty Towers
Exactly ! They did this exact same thing with skins. The situations, storyline and humour just doesn't sit right when it's American-ised. I'm

Also a good point

American television is 100% allowed to show blood, gore, and sickening imagery (Walking Dead as one example). But you can't say "fuck." I mean... think of the children! They can't hear the words they use daily on tv! That'd be a sin!
