  • Flying STAR, a Hybrid Crawling and Flying Sprawl Tuned Robot
    FSTAR is a robot fitted with a sprawling mechanism, wheels and propellers allowing it to both run and fly using the same motors. The current prototype can fly at 15m/s and run on the ground at 2.6 m/s.
    The combined capabilities of running and flying allows FSTAR to fly over obstacles or run underneath them and move inside pipes. The robot can reduce its width to crawl in confined spaces or underneath obstacles while touching the ground.
    The robot can be used for safe package deliveries, search and rescue applications manufacturing chains, agriculture, maintenance, cleaning, filming and entertainment.
    The robot was developed in the Bio-Inspired and medical Robotics Lab at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev (ME department).
    IEEE, ICRA 2019.

    Wonder if it would be practical to make the propellers be the ring type and use those for wheels as well vs. the gearbox

      I noticed that the props are spinning as the thing rolls about. That doesn't look efficient.

    Pretty cool concept. Next step will be to integrate propeller guards that double as working wheels maybe using planetary gears or something similar.

      The risk for something jamming the wheels will be greater, and the rotors will be useless.

      I agree, I hope US military uses that technology to transport injured soldiers! Even though it would be slow, it can go anywhere to take out peoples!

    At this state it look fun as an office toy ... noting more. They need to change the design to make it more robust for military use also add suspension system for the toy wheels.

      This is a prototype from a university lab, where cost savings and proof of concept are primary concerns.
      This video is the proof of concept, not the market product.

    How to make

  • @zeev
    @zeev 5 років тому +1

    this would be way cooler at scale with shrouds for the props and a stinger on it , loitering , hopping and jumping around to kill tanks. eventually tanks are over. everythign will get smaller and more nimble, making tanks obsolete. this isn't nearly stealthy enoug for stealth missions. it would have to be way more silent, meaning, smaller.
