  • Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, first unveiled Salto’s high-flying capabilities in 2016. Now, they’ve equipped the robot with a slew of new skills, giving it the ability to bounce in place like a pogo stick and jump through obstacle courses like an agility dog. Salto can even take short jaunts around campus, powered by a radio controller.

    Important R&D next-steps:
    1. Add googly eyes
    2. Trigger various highpitched "Wheee" / "Wooohoo" / "Yipeee" sounds on 1 in (n) jumps
    3. Make nine more and have them follow you everywhere...

I love the noises it makes. It is so easy to find yourself anthropomorphizing it. Due to its small mass and non threatening appearance and movement it wouldn't be that hard to get people to coexist in the same spaces with it. UC Berkley really has some fascinating robotics research projects.

You know when he said that in order for the robot to predict how high he’s going and how fast he’s falling down I forgot the exact word he used but he said it basically worked like a human ear and it got me thinking if he really wants to add on he’s gonna have to make it more self aware to really get through obstacles and more so crazy how robots evolve and I love it

At 3:30 Ron Faring mentioned adding on arms, which gave me an idea. What if you used a 3D printed compliant mechanism to grab onto targeted objects? It would be driven by a compact actuator and release when pulled by a string drive, but remain in the open position until grabbing a target, which would trigger it to close. Then, once it's done holding, it pulls the string and releases the claw. After that has completed, the claw returns to being locked in the open state.

Adding some bionic soft feet should make it possible to walk on sandy soil, and adding a rotor on the tail should make it faster. Maybe it has some weird feet to help it float. However, a moving body is not suitable for installing a visual camera, which limits the scope of application, but other sensors can be used to assist obstacle avoidance.
