Incredible how Daniel in a couple of minutes manages to show how Dorico revolutionize the way notation Software works. Fantastic!
From Sibelius to Dorico. It was honor thank you Daniel.
Dorico is amazing and really intuitive. Who's using it now?? 😁
INTUITIVE?¡?¡??¡? MAN DORICO IS NOT INTUITIVE... YOU NEED TO PRESS SHIFT+B AND TYPE -1 TO ERASE A COMPASS... WTF... INTUITIVE IS SIBELIUS... You just click and pres DELETE or right click delete. That is intuitive... Just click and press notes or a lot of things like that... I bought Dorico elements but it just make a lot of steps more for simple things... I should just keep with sibelius...
If I have to search on internet how to do things that make it NOT INTUITIVE and that is a Design problem.
@@nuffen was just going to comment this...
INTUITIVE?!!! Sorry, Matthew, but I have to agree with nun Falco. Dorico is the most UNintuitive software I have ever worked with in my life. The only thing that is even more UNintuitive and totally UNamazing is their documentation. I sure hope you are making your statement with your tongue in cheek. Otherwise, I'm a bit worried about you. (Your last question is a bit ambiguous, but as for me, I'm awfully close to going back to Sibelius, which is used by more A-list film orchestrators who don't have time for an "intuitive" Dorico.)
I love it. Goodbye Sibelius.
Great introductory tutorial, thanks!
Pure genius.
Yes
Finally, meterless input and having the other notes shift accordingly
after duration re-assignment... it really is Christmas! Thank you
Daniel, the entire development team and Steinberg for these features
that I and I am sure many others have honestly been waiting years for!
Will educational/student pricing be available any time soon?
Educational pricing is already available (as are cross-grade and educational cross-grade pricing). See the Educational shop, here: www.steinberg.net/en/shop/education/educational_products.html
Bravo, Haydn didn't care about meter either when he started a new composition, he just started with a series of pitches just as Daniel showed at 1:52. Absolutely essential.
Lots of notation programs are made for typesetting music that's already been composed. This is really made for composing.
I recall Haydn also mentioning the subsequent shift+M command as a real life saver.
@@krzemian I wasn't kidding.Franz Joseph Haydn did actual start writing a series of pitches without rhythm or mete. From this stark beginning he refined his idea. Very unusual, but that is what he did.
I prepare music in several parts for groups of amateur players of various instruments, one to a part. In looking out suitable music for them I find it very helpful if the range of each part is given. Sibelius does this. Does Dorico? I haven't seen it mentioned.
How do yo choose if the note goes up or down? for example, the second note you imput (G), after D, it goes down.
Dorico's version of insert mode is perhaps unique but insert mode is present in other notation programs.
Hi Daniel! Thanks for an excellent intro into this program. Question: Is it possible to create a shortcut keyboard command for the select function (arrow) on the upper left side? Cheers, Ash
Just got a student copy of Dorico myself and I'm absolutely loving it and the videos have been a great way to get around the learning curve. Slight problem is I don't actually know how to remove rests from the single bar (I'm writing 16th century counterpoint and now have too many beats in the single bar). Advice?
Hello, you can find the answer to that question on this thread on our forum: www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=246&t=103634&p=569338&hilit=Remove+rests#p569338
Thanks for that info. These days I do a lot of copying Bach lute and solo violin music, chôro pieces, which look like a fakebook page in extended rondo-like form, plus arranging guitar music--tons of that. I'm looking for tutorial(s) on keyboard shortcuts for the most routine frequently done operations, e.g., into note entry mode, out of note entry, move this way, move that way, enharmonics etc. I've been at this for about 25 years: Finale, Sibelius, now Dorico just this week. Dorico is hard to penetrate, but the fingered guitar parts are irresistible! Hey, I'm old, and this is hard! My brain hurts! Where can I turn?
Sibelius user here for years and just got the trial pro version 3.5. Let's see what happens next???
Can one enter notation via piano keyboard to metronome or by keeping tempo with foot pedal (finale trait)?
Once adding a time signature can you recreate the initial meter less bar in the middle of the score, say for a cadenza?
Yup - just enter e.g. X in the popover and you are unmetered again.
Is there a download than can run under Yosemite?
Can users customize/reassign shortcuts for note durations?
I would prefer 1 for whole, 2 for half, 4 for quarter, 6 for 16th, and 8 for eighth, 3 to toggle the current duration from duple to triplet. That just seems more logical to me than some random number like 5 being an eighth note.
Yes you can, although our system is designed to also work by touch - as the numbers get less, so does the duration and vice versa. Very quick to use. But up to you - change it in the Preferences > Key Commands. You can also set a midi note / controller button to be a shortcut too.
Can you enlarge the time signature....as seen in more contemporary scores?
Not yet... but you will be able to.
Is it possible to create custom keyboard shortcuts? By "routing" a key over to another?
Even if you planned carefully convenient shortcuts, it is not certain they are so smart for us Norwegians. We have for example not "=" on a key, but must press Shift+0, and "/" is shift+7. We also have quite different buttons that the four nearest Enter-button (namely å, ¨, æ. and ' ).
How will Dorico deal with this?
Hello, Some of the key command shortcuts for other languages has been implemented, and will take effect when you choose a language from Dorico > Preferences and then choose Key Commands. There is a 'Keyboard language' option, although this currently doesn't include Norwegian.
In this same area, you can setup your own key commands for most things, however in some cases such as note spelling you sometimes also need to use a manual keycommands.json file.
What is the font that is used by default in these videos, for instrument names and title of piece? It looks beautiful.
It is called Academico.
Dorico Thanks! Question though, is that a custom Steinberg font creation that's only available in Dorico? Because the only font I found when I googled was "Academica", which looks similar but not exact. Thank you!
Hi, you could help me.When I open Dorico, the sound disappears from UA-cam.Thank you in advance.
I know Dorico is not Sibelius and I'm looking forward to seeing it become my everyday software, but I never even thought for a moment that the numeric shortcuts for duration would move horizontal across the top of the keyboard as opposed to the number pad. In fact I have a separate wireless number pad that I use. Bummer. It's more difficult to find the top row of numbers without looking than it is a number pad. Ask any cashier.
Hello, you can always configure your own key commands on the preferences of Dorico, Dorico > Preferences > Key commands > Simply select the function that you want and then press the key that you want to use, Dorico will automatically recognise the numeric pad in this case. Please have in mind that Dorico was mainly thought to be used on a laptop, which does not have a numeric pad on their Keyboard.
Hmmm...I guess. My laptop has a numeric pad. I thought more did than did not these days. Thank you for the response. I've been waiting for Dorico for a long time and now have a copy.
Since many people now only use a laptop, we needed to make sure that a numeric keyboard wasn't a necessity - when Sibelius was developed, most people used a desktop computer and keyboard.
How long do i get updates for Dorico ?
Is there a quick way to move notes once they are input?
Hello, yes, you can find that information on our Write Mode playlist: ua-cam.com/video/IYgUJvY3plE/v-deo.html or here: ua-cam.com/video/mGtGV8i-R2o/v-deo.html
I can't find how to move notes up or down. I've marked the notes that I want to move and tried mouse, arrows... all the logical stuff that works on any other notation software, but here the notes stay put. How do I edit them?
Use Alt and then up and down arrows. Or alt shift to move chromatically
To check - is the only way to change the pitch of an instrument by using alt+arrow keys? I'm used to Sibelius and on the trial for Dorico and am missing being able to drag the note around to find the pitch I'm searching for!
Alt-arrow is much more accurate than dragging. Maybe we'll add that one day.
This is a wise choice and a deliberate one. I have had to play countless parts full of mistakes over the years. All have come from one specific notation app (can you guess which?) and I can tell that many of these notes ended up in the wrong place by being too easily nudged out of line.
@@PaulHarrisonmusician You can now drag notes
I'm sure this has been asked before, somewhere. And maybe it's just assumed to be the case. But, can Dorico record in real time via a midi keyboard input? I most familiar with playing in the notes, to a metronome click with quantization settings engaged, and then tweak the score after recording the bulk of the ideas and phrases via midi piano keyboard.
No Dorico doesn't have that feature yet, but it's on the list. Many people prefer to use steptime instead of correcting mistakes afterwards, but we understand that everybody is different and this feature is wanted.
Thanks. For creating lesson tutuorials and customized sheet music for my younger students, I can play-in much quicker than step-time entry. I'll keep my eyes open for this added feature.
I also came here looking for this feature.
how do you add two notes together, to be played at once?
You can either press 'Q' for chord mode, use a MIDI keyboard to enter notes, or if you need two rhythms try this video about 'voices': ua-cam.com/video/IKBU7z0gAVo/v-deo.html
A mac keyboard is not the same, what kind of keyboard with your mac?
What's the adavantage to MuseScore - wich is freeware?
Dorico has many features that MuseScore doesn't have, but the main differences are the professional results and most of all time-saving. If you want a professional look and time is important then consider Dorico.
how do I put a simple rest in? FFS it's so counterintuitive - makes Sibelius almost look sensible!
You generally don't need to spend time entering rests, just enter the notes and press the spacebar when you want to move on in the bar by your selected note value (left panel) or along the rhythm grid (arrow keys)
I can make only a few bars a certain meter, right? Like when I want to switch between 3/4 and 4/4 thorughout a piece.
Also, am I able to do polymeter?
To enter e.g. alternating bars of 3/4 and 6/8, press Shift + M for the meter popover and then type 3/4 + 6/8 (note the space either side of the +). To change just one instrument into another time signature, select it from the right hand panel and then hold down the alt key as you click on the appropriate instrument.
I might also have only one or two bars in 5/4 while the rest are in 4/4, of course.
one thing this video doesn't tell me is how to change the pitch once I've created it or to move it by an octave which I'm used to doing easily with Sibelius - is there a tutorial that covers this (with mac)
Diatonically moving notes is Alt + arrows, so an octave (on Mac) is Cmd + Alt + arrows. You can download a 'getting started' PDF from our blog which includes this if that helps: blog.dorico.com/2018/09/getting-started-with-note-input/
How can I start with an off beat bar in Dorico
This little video should help: blog.dorico.com/2020/02/tip-convert-the-first-bar-of-a-flow-into-a-pick-up-bar/ You can use the Shift-M popover and type e.g. 4/4,1 where the comma and 1 means a 1 beat pickup in 4/4
Could you tell me why I cannot hear you tube tutorials or any other sound related programs when Dorico is launched. Dorico tech support suggested a whole lot of stuff that didn't help at all. For that reason I have stopped using Dorico for now.
I have the same problem, a message on UA-cam videos that audio rendering is not working.
I was really hoping you'd call the software Bach or something similar; no luck, but at least you typed some Bach at the beginning or your line there :-)
How can one change the tempo of the camera movement in the video?
Hello, that cannot be done.
I didn't mean that seriously, but thanks for the reply anyway :)
Hi, sorry for not getting that, yes, the editing is not optimal, but that is why we have changed the format for the rest of the videos, and let them only with screen capturing, please visit our How to videos:

Thank you!
Just slow down the video on the right side bottom of the UA-cam player to 75 or whatever and everything slows down ...easy...I do it all the time
I wish you would update your early videos and hire a new film crew. I have a Dorico pro on order and if have to learn from watching these videos I will get dizzy. Any suggestions for a complete Dorico novice ?
Try this (newer) set of videos. It's designed for Dorico SE, but the basics are the same in all versions ua-cam.com/video/QirsGa3zCek/v-deo.html
In Logic you can drag notes to a new position if you need to start a beat earlier for example but here this doesn't work.
It does work, you can drag it just fine. And logic is a terrible, awful, unusable tool for sheet music.
Looks great, but much too expensive. Hope you'll consider subscription based services in the future...
A lot of people really don't like the subscription option offered for other programs - are you using software professionally, or personally? We do offer a cross-grade price from Sibelius, Finale or Notion if that helps.
To me, the numbers for the note durations should be flipped. The higher the number, the higher the denominator of the fraction for that note. 1/2 = 2, 1/4=3, 1/8=4, etc
We've set it as the higher the number, the longer the note. You change the shortcuts for note duration if you wish in Preferences > Key Commands, but it won't affect e.g. metronome markings where you might sometimes use e.g. 6=120 - although you can use q=120 where q is quarter note.
For me it's easier with the arrow keys and the numeric keypad
Cubase 9 とDoricoのソフトがプラグインになれば最強の音楽ツールになるのにな~
Cubase and Dorico are separate programs and often used individually, however we hope to connect the two programs more closely in the future.
I find the tutorial misses the point. I don't work with key commands that much. I'm interested in how to move notes on the staff for example. I wasn't able to just click on the note and move it up or down. How do you move notes?
Hi, that can de done in Write mode, the Write Mode playlist explains it all: ua-cam.com/play/PLoyaeouPUsdsnltPMEyV6pzuHh6cs9-Cp.html
Dorico needs to add an 8va, 15mva lines
They are all there in the clefs section (RH panel of Write mode).
@@dorico Duh.....I overlooked that!! LOL!!! Thanks!!
Video tutorials are so rarely geared to how people learn things. For instance: he starts by showing the symbols for flats, sharps, pitches, etc. Then, at 1:37 he says you can "simply type," and then he does it. But what is he typing? I just got Dorico, and when I "simply type," nothing happens. So I have to experiment and figure out what step he skipped. I'm sure the answer is simple, but is the whole series of videos going to ignore whatever the writers assume you already know?
Peccato che i sottotitoli in italiano siano un disastro, non si capisce molto.
Dorico is the most NON INTUITIVE notation software ever
It may depend if you are struggling with your pre-learned knowledge of other notation software. We're here to help if you want it.
Appreciate the videos. The information is good, but technically the video is done poorly. Too many time you are focusing on Daniel, then Dorico, then Daniel, then Dorico..... It seems like every 5 seconds you're switching the camera view. This is disorienting and it is hard to focus on learning Dorico as I am continually trying to refocus on the GUI. At least I can pick Daniel our of a police lineup.
Hello, thank you for your feedback we are aware of this, and that is why we have created a new series only with screen capture, you can find them here: ua-cam.com/play/PLoyaeouPUsdsnltPMEyV6pzuHh6cs9-Cp.html ua-cam.com/play/PLoyaeouPUsdsCpYCYhxnK5j-o6U8q8Hpv.html
Who on earth doesn't use a MIDI keyboard in notation software? I don't get why anyone would do this.
This is quite an old video... but sometimes if you're travelling or using a laptop you might not have a MIDI keyboard to hand, so it's useful to know?
Shortcut for triplets? These arent real tutorials. More like a demo of a tutorial. Needs to be more indepth and encompasing.
The program does NOTHING you're saying it does
wow. I can't achieve ANY of this. Give me my f-ing pen. everyithing keeps misbehaving and changing itself. wtf. i know i'm a tech moron but REALLY?
Sorry to hear that. If you prefer a structured PDF for a simple project, please try the one available here instead: blog.dorico.com/2018/09/getting-started-with-note-input/
The camera crew/video editor mistakenly think that they are the stars of this tutorial.
OR they just bought a new software for video editing and are trying out all the new bells and whistles. Or they are rank beginners.
They have no clue as to how learning takes place. The constant shifting of perspectives is jarring and interferes with rather than enhances the lesson. Fire the bums and get a new team that has experience with filming tutorials. THIS IS NOT A HOLLYWOOD PRODUCTION.
See our replies to other comments, but all future videos have not been in this format.
