Notice how Vin Scully knows when to shut the hell up and let the moment happen without commentary. At the catch, he says "Dwight Clark", and then let the crowd tell the story. Mark of a great announcer.
I was lucky to grow up in Los Angeles when he did play-by-play for the Dodgers. Greatest announcer ever.
RIP, Vin.
Couldn't have said it better myself! I was blessed to listen to vin scully, BEST EVER!
who cares about Vin Scully - the hated Dodgers announcer. This all about the NINERS!
@@spider033181Oh shut up, Yankee fan.
Known fact... It's impossible to say "farmer John hot dogs" with out doing it in Vin's voice.
thats a literally broadcaster term / technique, its called “laying out”
RIP Vin Scully, Hank Stram, Dwight Clark, Bill Walsh, Tom Landry
So when they all sit around in heaven to catch up, God says, “So guys, I’d really love to hear the story one more time, just to know how that felt.”
The Golden Era of NFL Football
Wife saw Bill Walsh at SJC. Said he was friendly and gracious, a real gentleman.
I'll never forget that catch. Brings back wonderful memories. Now the 49ers have QB Purdy and his passing style is just like Montana's.
Except that he's far from being as skilled
@@TheInkPitOx He's still got a lot to learn.
@@TheInkPitOx He's not too far off. Even with the loss to the Raven's. Purdy is far better at this stage in his career than Montana was. Whether it keeps going for years to come is yet to be determined but the skill is there.
@@TheInkPitOx purdy got into the super bowl as a mr. irrelevant
@@rofyves and he played like Mr Irrelevant when his team needed him the most 😂
Moments after the catch Too Tall Jones said to Montana, "You just beat America's team." Joe Montana responded "Well now you can sit home with America and watch the Super Bowl."
Montana is wild with that smack talk.
@@gen3kali877Montana owes Eric wright alot
🧢
Montana drew Too Tall into the air with that pump fake, and then as he was coming down he threw it over him. The man was brilliant.
@@JewandGreek the only person that was brilliant was Eric wright, nobody else forget about montana and clark yous 49er fans should use your brain which none of yous have
This play ended the old era of football and began a new one we’re still in. Bill Walsh, joe Montana, Dwight Clark. Y’all really changed the game
Thats it? Boring shitty game
Nope we're in the gambling era now.
You're not even old
I remember this game all too well watching it at a bar and the Bay Area went nuts with parties in the streets everywhere. Today is the day 49ers will make history again winning the KC Chiefs in superbowl 58. Even though I no longer live in N. CA, 49ers still my team. GO 9ERS!!!!!! GO WHIP THE CHIEFS! THIS IS ***YOUR*** DAY.
@@lifeunleashed I will root for SF now because of this comment ! I always have loved the Bay Area and I’ve never even been.
and somewhere in the crowd, a 4 year old legend to be is cheering to his idol. an amazing time in football hands down.
This one play started the 49ers dynasty in the 80s classic.
A little known boy named Tom Brady was in those seats no one could’ve predicted what would’ve happened next
Future 🐐
@@B1inded3agle__ yes Tom Brady told this story like a thousand times not sure
True story he had a cowboys jersey on until Montana threw that TD
@@jeremystear201 that’s cap he said his first jersey was Montana
@Rowdy Jr Rodgers wasn't born yet
Saw this live on TV; my whole neighborhood in the Bay started to scream in euphoria.
I'll never forget how the whole city just was screaming for joy all night!
RIP the legend Vin Scully
I loved how Vin stayed quiet for a minute and let the pictures tell the story during the celebration
@@paddyballgame as he did often
@@Pitt-ny8cj -Yes, a major element of his greatness. When Vin broadcast the first game of the 1988 baseball World Series won in the bottom of the ninth with a 3 and 2 count on Kirk Gibson as he hit the game winning HR, Scully called the play - "She's GONE!!!!" - and then went silent for one minute and nineteen seconds as the cameras caught every aspect and angle of the jubilant stadium. It was classic.
@@sensei48 than when he came back after that 1 plus minute silence what he said was also classic!
...and to add to the moment - at 1:10 in the video, the TD is signaled by ref Gene Tunney, quite possibly the best official ever to call NFL games.
This play is always fantastic, I'll never tire of looking at it.
I know a lot of people try to knock this play's greatness down to it just being a good play, I think it deserves it's status as one of the greatest in NFL history. Joe was a step or two from being out of bounds then just sailed that pass high. I always think it's going to be incomplete, before Clark leaps up just high enough to grasp it and pull it in. If he didn't catch it, they would've only had one more shot to get it in. This play is one of the most clutch you'll ever see, and started a dynasty for San Francisco
As a Raider fan, i was one of them. For so many years, i never got the hype. I'll admit though that this is my first time watching the actual film, and after watching the replay... yup, now i see why lol that was a hard catch to make considering how high he had to jump to even make it. Plus the adjustment he had to make. I hate you guys lol but i always give credit where credit is due. Can't take away that this was in the final limit of a conference championship game where they desperately needed that touchdown.
@@DanielRamirez-uk1yfif Eric wright doesnt make that tackle we wouldnt be talking about the catch!!!
@@DanielRamirez-uk1yf As a 49er fan and Raider Hater, I loved this play. I saw many of my friends and relatives jump on the Raider Band Wagon in 1967 when I was 13 years old. I stuck with the 49ers throughout. Also, a reminder: the first two years of the Raider's existence, they played in San Francisco, first at Kezar until half way through the 1960 season, when they switched to Candlestick Park, where they played all home games in 1961, the original unenclosed Stick!
@@DanielRamirez-uk1yf Also, the Raiders original colors were black and gold. Check it out. Many images of the Oakland (San Francisco actually) Raiders playing in those cool black helmets with no logo, at Candlestick and Kezar if you Google it. Type in Oakland Raiders 1960 and 1961 and to to images. No gray and black until 1963 at Frank Youell Field, where Laney JC is today.
The brother in the white suits always makes me smile!
Totally. So many memorable moments and memorable people in this very short and very legendary clip. Great call.
Dwight Clark’s nonchalant/matter of fact spike of the football is underrated. I’d even call it The Spike after The Catch
Yep totally adds to the lore that he didn't stand there preening, or start some big celebratory dance, and just spiked it in motion and ran on... legendary...
@@user-xnr i remember like it was yesterday. Big loss.........The Cowboys lost 3 straight NFC Championship games....Yes, the 49ers just started their dynasty!!! Changing of the NFC Guard.....fun times.
87 will live on forever! RIP DC....
Great catch!
Another observation I had is how different people dressed back then when going to a football game. Now, its more casual and definitely more jerseys.
I was at that game. It used to get pretty damn cold in Candlestick and they didn't make warm clothes that weren't bulky back then
I saw a few pimps and players in the crowd! Lol
Disco wasn't over yet...
I was born in 93. I wish I could have seen the Niners of the 80s and 90s. Would have loved to watch Joe Montana play live. I hope Lance can be that sort of great qb. This season will be our season. Bang bang Niner gang!
Brock Purdy SZN
Tears. Every time. I remember listening to this on the radio when I was 12 (cause I was on restriction from the tv from my parents fml)
That was a great game winning play but also, one of the most brilliant drives of all time. Dallas was playing zone earlier in the drive and the Niners ran the ball because the DB's were playing pass.
This STILL brings a tear to my eye...what a great memory for me!
You had to see this game and this play when it happened to appreciate it. It was exciting. The NFL was real back then. Real football. No agendas. No social media clowns.
I was a longtime Cowboy fan at the time, watching tv, & was sure the Cowboys had the game at hand. Montana on the run, apparently going to throw the ball away. The 6'4" Dwight Clark, seemingly out of nowhere, literally reaching to the sky to make The Catch. My heart sunk. It really did signal the end of the Dallas Dynasty, & the beginning of the great 49ers era. Stiil remember Sports Illustrated's famous photo of Deight's catch. RIP Dwight Clark, Tom Landry, Bill Walsh, Vin Scully.
The most iconic plays in my memory as a 49er fan
Montana to Taylor too
I remember that play like it was a few weeks ago. I was watching that game in our den in middle Tennessee. I was to nervous to set down. I was really rooting for the 49'ers.
This is how I remember football --- the good ol' days.
Football was allowed to be a game back then. It was something that brought us together too. That's what I really miss about sports altogether. People seemed happier back then.
I was 11 when I saw this . Never will forget it!! Joe Montana was the GOAT!! No doubt . Still is!!
@@TheSaintFrenzy football isn’t a game anymore?
@toothybrushman use your brain bro he's saying they didn't call penalties like they do now
@goldwerewolf8651 lol they still called penalties back in the 1980s you clown 😂
Vin Scully was the master at knowing when to let the crowd do the talking
Rest In Peace Vin Scully.
This guy with the 49ers beanie at 0:28. I bet he was a diehard fan so overcome by the moment he had to hide the tears. Beautiful.
To think little Tom Brady was in the crowd going nuts
That's why I'm here too!!! LOL
And he started crying because he was so startled by the very loud crowd! That great photo of him and his mom! I can only imagine what it woulda have been like for SF if they had drafted Brady!
I know he was even dressed up as Joe Montana for Halloween why we never drafted him to the Niners I have no idea must have been personal??
I'm glad we didn't. Now we have a better QB BROCK PURDY.
@domonickjosten9237 lol brock is far from Tom Brady mate.
Greatest Play In Pro Football History!!! And I'll tell you why. It's because everything changed because of it. The Cowboys went downhill, and the 49ers dynasty began!
This especially for Cowboy and SanFran fans is a moment in time, that we will never forget where we were at when The Catch happened..I was at Ft Benjamin Harrison, military basic training, .never forget watching that game and going disappointed to my barracks 😂
Seen this video like 100 times and still can't get tiered of it
Same with me. I've seen it I can't even tell u how many times. I've been a 49ers fan all my life, and Joe was a big reason for that. Him and Steve Young.
Wow! Love watching montana play. His throws are flawless. He run and finds a guy and just makes a play. Wish i could see 49ers play like again!
I still remember watching this live in TV in my living room in Oakland. What a thrill after so many years of frustration.
The Greatest Classic I remember this!, Niner Faithful 4LIFE 😅😅❤❤
If this play had been made against the Giants, the Bears, the Eagles, or anyone else it would have been forgotten. The fact that it is so well remembered after all of these years is a magnificent tribute to the Dallas Cowboys.
One of the greatest catches of all time.
Naaaaa....
Tru dat, the ball had to over 8 feet high, incredibly mastered
One of the greatest throws as well
@@antonioiniguez1615 Yup
Illegal "catch." Clark came back from out-of-bounds..illegal "catch."
Purdy and Kittle are going to recreate this on Sunday
I'm a lifelong Chicago Bears fan (insert joke here lol) but I just read about this pass being one of the "most famous plays in NFL history" (Mike North's book "Settling the Score: Talkin' Chicago Sports"). I'm so glad I found this video. What a catch and win! I got so excited watching it, I got tears in my eyes from the beauty of this play. Amazing football! I'm looking forward to the NFL season starting soon. Hopefully my Bears don't embarrass me too much 🤣🏈
I had forgotten that Vin Scully called this. I did see this live when I was 10 years old. Unreal.
This is the best cath in NFL and will never be duplicated
Hell no! It's iconic sure but not even top 10
LEGENDARY HOF PLAY!! BY HOF PLAYERS!!
ua-cam.com/video/M-SwgyeZkhI/v-deo.html 💪🏾🙏🏿
This play was awesome but, the real hero of this game was...Larry Pillers, the defensive end. Not Clark. A lot of people remember this play, as spectacular as it was. But on the ensuing drive, Dallas got into position to kick a game winning field goal, and make Clark's catch merely a minor footnote. However, Pillars's sack and strip of Dallas QB White, and subsequent recovered fumble, are what really won this game for San Francisco. A lot of people don't remember that.
Also Eric wrights tackle of person at the last second , or person was gone,
i met an older 49er fan today that told me he was at this game said he seen every conference game since 71 in person man our franchise is something very excited for this year only threat i see is the ravens stopping us from winning the superbowl regardless of the outcome im happy i got to see our current team play in person got myself a brock purdy jersey before this season started and im glad i did he might possibly be my generations Joe Montana
0:14 the woman in the white obviously a Dallas fan!
It also showed 2 other cowboys fans after her but they go by the camera fast
I'll never forget it! I never thought in a million years that Dwight Clark would catch that. BUT HE DID!
And me as a child, literally trying to walk on the walls, yelling my throat out, tears of joy in my eyes. My aunt trying to calm me down. I was euphoric, i believe i was happier in this game than the Super Bowl, maybe not. The thing is, all my cousins were with the cowboys and i alone was the only niner in the house. We defeated "America's team"
"Americas Team" has the highest winning % all time. It's only by .2 over the GB Packers but they are #1.
All these years later, The Catch still brings a tear to my eye.
What a great game.
Both teams played so hard it was too bad one team had to lose.
Montana magic.
Wow I was a kid watching this play at 11 years old 1981 season on TV after 70's frustrating playoff loses to cowboys Joe was super cool and after that won 4 superbowls won in 80s decade with Pro Football Hall Of Famers Ronnie Lott Fred Dean Head Coach Bill Walsh and owner Eddie DeBartolo and Charles Hailey Roger Craig and Dwight Clark are star players 👏.
For those who lie to themselves and say Joe was trying to throw it away, tell me the last time you saw a QB throw a ball away and the ball didnt end up in the 3rd row of the stands.
RIP # 87
He did exactly what he was told to do. He threw it to the back of the end zone. Clark used every bit of his leaping ability to get it. Sprint right option.
Montana almost certainly was aware that he was throwing what was a bit of a Hail Mary pass but he clearly wasn't trying to throw it away. There was quit a bit a good luck working for Dwight Clark here in completing such an inoperable leaping catch as I doubt they had both previously practiced just such a pass over and over again (and thus knew actually what to do here).
You would be right except for 2 things: 1st, no matter what you think he couldn't see Clark. 2nd, yes any QB could (and would) throw the ball into the 3rd row, BUT, if you watch the replay Joe was backing up on his heels and when he threw the ball his feet were almost off the ground. That will take a lot of zip and distance off the ball. Somebody in the booth said that Montana was trying to throw the ball away. Given the situation, throwing the ball away was the right move then luck moved in.
@@ervinghenderson4780 WRONG
@@Charlesb88 He was trying to throw the ball away. Live with it.
My grandpa was the ambassador to mexico and Joe Montana gave him his helmet from the chiefs which is pretty cool
Was he the actor John Gavin? If so, I remember him very well from movies and commercials. Even remember when he announced running for Ambassador to Mexico.
WHOAAA!!!! THAT GUY AT 1:18 IS ON AN IPHONE!!!!! TIME TRAVELER ALERT!!!!
What a great game. You had to have seen it to appreciate this last play. It caused hysteria in San Francisco. One of top three endings to a NFC championship game in NFL history. Even to this day.
Joe Montana is the G.O.A.T!

Rightfully called
The Catch!
Just stop beating Cincinnati in Superbowls for once for once
You were the little guy in that magic moment.
That started the best dynasty of all time!! Love my Niners!!
That ball, Joe threw it in a way that the nose of the ball was pointed upward, which gave the ball more surface area pushing forward, which slowed the trajectory and momentum of the ball enough that it fell right into Dwight Clark's hands
Unless you are firing the ball at someone in which case the nose of the ball will be horizontal. Whether you are throwing the ball 30 yards or 60 yards, the upward angle of the ball remains the same.
It took Franco Harris 50 years to admit the ball touched the ground. Dead ball, no Immaculate Reception. Maybe someday Joe (and I agree that he was the G.O.A.T.) will admit that he was throwing the ball away.
Best 49er memory I have!!!
This will never be repeated
Montana is the goat. Rules were a lot different when he played compared to Brady. You could actually hit the QB when Montana played. I couldn’t imagine Brady playing in those days he wouldn’t have lasted 5 years. Every time he was hit when he played he cried like a baby so the officials would call a roughing penalty.
Deserves to go down in history as one of the plays ever.
Dwight Clark with the moves
Esa jugada me rompió el corazón. Todavía cada que la miro.
Happy 40th anniversary to the Catch
It's amazing somebody in the stands that today is still playing in the NFL. He's the link to this game and this era and it might as well be another world.
