  • Black Twitter wasn't having it with Justin Timberlake the night of Jesse Williams speech. They called out Timberlake for turning his back on Janet Jackson during the nipplegate controversy. Also his appropriation of black music and culture.

No one "wants to be black" just because they appreciate a certain derivative of black culture. If I like to sing opera does that mean I want to be Italian? If I paint in an impressionist style does that mean I want to be French? Who in their right mind would want "the black struggles?" Blacks don't want the Black struggles. It's just some thing they face, apart from any art form. It would exist whether Hip Hop existed or not. Get real.

@cheryl Israel Loving whiteness, lifting up whiteness, and asserting white Power can be frightening for a lot of black folks who just don’t understand, who refuse to understand...It’s Okay to Be Pro-White in a World That’s Anti-White..Because if we don’t take the time to value, empower and love up on ourselves and each other every single day, who will?
When the shoe is on the other foot it sounds racist as can be right! maybe you should redo your slogan.

Justin timber fake is like the first person that opens their mouth when a group of people are being addressed about stolen merchandise.....he responded as a means of playing ignorant to the fact that he knows Jessie Williams was speaking directly to him and a long list of white people who benefit greatly from our culture and bear none of the burden that people of African descent have always been made to endure in a white supremacist country.

If you think life is terrible here, I challenge any of you to go to Africa and see how it turns out. With most African countries plagued by years of corruption and civil war, I highly doubt most of us will do better. Most African leaders use their ability to get aid from America or other Western countries to stay in power while never using those funds to actually help their people. Racism and corruption knows no racial boundaries. My story is probably not even possible in Africa or anywhere else in the world and I am far from being rich. No one can argue than many injustices have been done to blacks in the past and America should be ashamed of that. However, I think black Americans the last 50 to 100 years have benefitted more from being in America than the other way around. Am I saying racism (systemic or otherwise) does not exist? Hell no. I do think that if a person is determined enough not to take his eyes off the prize or get caught in the cycle of crime, teenage pregnancy, or drugs, you can make it in America in spite of blatant racism or being raised in an impoverished neighborhood. All of this whining and complaining about whether JT or other artists profiting by adopting elements of music or culture thought to be the realm of blacks only does nothing to further anyone's cause. If anything, it makes us look small-minded, petty, and whiny. If you can prove copyright infringement, then sue. Life is never going to be fair or equal. I have not gotten advancement opportunities in my field I felt I should have gotten in spite of having more experience and education than the people I went up against. You have to pick and choose your battles and keep pushing forward. FYI, black Americans would be one of the 15 richest countries in the world if you take the assets of all blacks and form a separate country.

+Don apparently u haven't heard of federal housing red lining, the GI Bill, & social security cuz black workers/soldiers were shut out of all three. when blacks finally starting receiving the benefits of Society the govt stopped providing them within 15 years. I am assuming that u are a white worker. workers of all stripes have had it horribly since the 1970s, but blacks have experienced that for more than 400 years now. when white folks realize that black oppression is also used to repress white labor or that the kkk was used not only to terrorize black southern population but also to bust unions (that's why union membership in south has historically been low), we may start making progress

+Weak people are meat. The strong will eat. thing that bugs me is that media portrays MLK like a man who turned the other cheek. he was called a terrorist by white supremacists from Birmingham to Chicago, from Atlanta to Detroit. he said, I paraphrase, "what's the good of being able to eat at a lunch counter if u can't afford the hamburger?"

This what pissed me off about Phil, "when people say they are inspired they follow it up with actions, what are you gonna do Justin?" like damn, the man just posted that tweet, how you know what he about to do or not do?

Well, he did bring up the "wardrobe malfunction" that occurred when Janet Jackson and Timberlake were performing at the Super Bowl. They were supposed to be friends, but Timberlake didn't have a thing to say in support of Janet Jackson when Janet was being attacked from all sides. Even his family and his people were talking about how Janet was an old has-been trying to ride on Timberlake's coat tails. Do you believe that? And he remained silent, he never stood up for her.Maybe today, if something like that happened, he would respond differently. I doubt it, though. His thoughtless and condescending tweet shows that he's willing to be supportive when it doesn't cost him anything. Otherwise? Nope.

justin didnt have a chance, simply because he was a white man, these people want to have a victim mentality, sit down, whine and cry about it, and then want to fight among themselves and with others and then when no one is helping them, they wonder why they are alone in their plight and no one assists them...

Timberland was quoted as saying "it's to late to apologize" in response to this. I still can't believe so many black people are defending him after Jessie Williams literally laid out a description of what white people have been doing forv500 years, then exhibit A or in this case J present itself...and people still defending him. Conprehension is something a lot of people don't have today. Scary as hell having dialog with those people because it ain't conversation or even communication!

the power is NO MAN'S friend, by it's very nature it is corrupted. It's not a white vs black issue, it's how we are divided and conquered by the media and politics of the power structure that is the problem. Don't buy into this us vs them. The nature of the state is what is at the core of evil.

I never understood why there was such an uproar over the super bowl incident with Janet and Timberlake. She was on board with it. She's on board with most things that have to do with non black men.
And as far as him "appropriating" black culture, yeah he makes "black" music and he doesn't address social issues. But neither do 90% of black artists who market black on black crime, promiscuity and chaos in their music! Come on man...

Here’s the thing tho: not only was Janet banned from ever performing at the Super Bowl but he literally pinned the blame on her acting like he wasn’t the one that ripped her tittis loose. But I think we should’nt hold that against him because if Janet can move past it we can too. I mean he did apologize to her. Justin grew over the years but he’s still ignorant and a culture vulture. I totally agree I know he means well. I like him still.

He should have stood up for Janet by saying it was an accident it was not intentional, we are both sorry, leave Janet alone, that's it and that's all. But no, he turned his head while Janet took the all of the backlash. Not cool...

You speak very great truth, but I am going to have to disagree with this Commentary. Yes, Hip Hop, R&B, and Urban Gospel are our music genres, and our culture. But with me, music is music. Chris Brown, Usher, and Ne Yo had a few Pop Songs. And Darius Rucker is a Black Country Singer. So, what's the difference ? But that's your opinion, and I respect that. Now, I do have to call out Justin Timberlake on one of his Comments, that we are all the same. Because we are not the same. We cannot get away with some things, that he can get away with. We African Americans have been unjustly treated so cruel and wrong in this Country for the Last 400 Years. So, we are not the same. Now, I know that Mr. Advise Show have done this Two Years Ago. But, if these people want to go after somebody for disrespecting our culture, go after the other Justin. Which is Justin Bieber, for putting all of those Tattoos on his arms, and making racist jokes about African Americans. But Justin Timberlake, Robin Thick, Jon B, and George Michael, you all shouldn't go after them. I have not seen them disrespecting our culture one time.

Of all people, we're going to critique and get upset over Justin Timberlake, but we are okay with the demonic, misogynist, and violent and divisive musicians that get celebrated at these award shows. Why can' t we focus on issues that actually matter? We're really wasting our energy on trying to find an issue with Justin Timberlake, expecting him to understand the context of the speech, when as a white man he obviously would have a difficult time relating to many of the things that Jesse Williams brought up. You're mad at him because he doesn't understand what it's like to be black. Of course he doesn't. Is there really what this has come to?

This was a very good point! Many non-Black folk are not as understanding to own the level of responsibility that comes with the challenges that this music brings for Black artists and people of color. Historically, this music has political attachments to it.
Justin and the rest of them are opportunistic because the truth be known that many of the masses would rather buy the music from a White person anyway, then a Black artist. That’s why a Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, or Little Richard would never be as famous as Elvis Presley who copied them. Yet, artists like Diana or Tina are inimitable then and even now.
I am not saying that whomever is not good, then the music should not be enjoyed, but it should be honored, otherwise you are not being honest, fair, and authentic, because that’s the same standard that you would hold to the Black artists who make it mainstream.
While I don’t think Justin meant anything by it personally, he did use that moment to capitalize off of it, so he is aware of the attention and payoff, as he, is opportunistic. Thus, he should be held accountable if he acts in that capacity. Otherwise, you are only trying to take away from this man’s speech. Likewise, he only used Janet to promote himself, without helping her when she had a legitimate issue at the game.

Eminem?... so it's okay for Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and the pranksters to say their inspired "which btw I haven't heard anything from them or a peep from them as far as standing their sellout asses up like JW.. but any ways the Wyte Boy can't be inspired. you do know when MLK marched there were INSPIRED Wyte boys and Wyte girls with him?.. oh and furthermore the crowd JW was talking to did all that clapping and still didn't get the full measage.. he was talking about them too....

    • @sierrajones4681

From what i gather it's because apparently JT has been silent in these matters...something about not defending Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction fiasco...and all of the sudden he tweets his '2 little 2 late' tweet which is being taken as him sort of barging in and including himself in a 'private black' moment; a moment that felt good and induced pride in the black community. So they are peeved. And i can see that point, along with his "sweet soul" being taken as condescending, but the extremeness of the backlash he got is just evidence of how racism can come full circle. While JT was a little oblivious with his comments, they were well-intentioned and meant to be an expression of solidarity. To call him a racist & HATE on him, is just what happens when activists don't check themselves and focus on division rather than unity. Alienating whites who aren't ignorant assholes is counterproductive! and how racism comes full circle. It's very disheartening & concerning because it means racism will always be a vicious cycle of blacks vs whites; like the Hatfields and Mccoys; just never ending. I have experienced this too when i speak out in solidarity with black causes on twitter. And i have ALWAYS been very vocal against ALL racism . Yet many blacks will get pissed and talk shit to me because i happen to have white skin. I had someone tell me to "save my white tears". It's fucked up.

Normally you sound logical and educated. To say if Justin is going to sing R&B then he Has to deal with "the struggle". What? It's a type of music. Don't try to make more of it. It's a way that he and anyone else with that talent can make a living. Nothing more. He also doesn't need to tell anyone what he was inspired to do. But you can assume that he isn't doing anything I guess out of anger. I hope these are not your true colors starting to shine through because as i said you normally sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. This isn't about a difference of opinion, what you stated was truly moronic.

Why go creating new ones when its completely unnecessary. If we want to look at true instances of oppression? We have more than enough to pick from. Lets acknowledge our friends and work towards changing the hearts of our enemies.

Firstly all he said was inspired and everyone gets triggered and clapped out of site. He might have been inspired to take on the black plight, he might have been inspired to donate to black causes or he might have just been inspired to live a better way but did he get a chance to say his intentions before someone jumped down his throat? NO. Does he even need to justify his intentions? NO.
Secondly you say his response is condescending? what do you expect when he was replying to a stupid ridiculous tweet.
So looking at that tweet, thirdly; "apologise to Janet??" How do you know if he didn't apologise in person to Janet? plus he did apologise in public so you can't use that against him. That was yeaaaaars ago and people are still bringing it up. Janet caught the brunt of it as she was the one exposed and not him plus she's a woman living in a female image contentious society. It was bad for Janet but the backlash was not Justin's fault.
Fourthly; so anybody who is not black, needs to take on the black plight if they do music traditionally done by black musicians??? Ok good luck with that one. That is so stupid!! Anybody is literally free to do whatever they want. Thats called free will. Going by this logic then, please don't cook and sell Asian meals unless you are taking on the Asian plight. Timberland, Drake, Nicki, Flo Rida, Neyo and America please don't produce European EDM sounding tracks unless you are willing to take on the European plight.
Lastly, can we be done with "what if's" and "if it was". That kind of reasoning can't justify anything? Chris Brown beats up Rihanna and till this day still has a successful career. R.Kelly in spite of his transgressions at the time still continued his successful career. Half the rappers go to jail and come back and still have successful rap careers so you just can't say "what if"
I'll just stop there cause this is just bull
