It's the Opinel No. 13. AKA probably the most ridiculously oversized folder you've ever seen. Fun though. And surprisingly effective in the cutting test!

I have a tire beater in tucked into the right side of the driver's seat of my care for self defense because my job often puts me in situations where I am at least somewhat concerned about somebody "waiting for me in the parking lot." This thing looks to be about that size folded up, and so much more of a deterrent if you have time to unfold it.
The advantage of the tire beater, however, is that cops don't blink an eye or say a word about it because truckers and tow-truck drivers mostly do the exact same thing. The folding machete has the potential to start an uncomfortable conversation.
It's kind of ridic that these are some of the best cuts I've seen on this channel. What the fluff.
because opinel knifes come razor sharp
@@nicomassaro7999 Can relate. As a child I once cut my hand with one of those. No pain, just very much blood all over the snow.
For real tho lol.
Interesting fact - in my country, a carry legal knife has to be single edge and folding. It doesn't say anything about dimensions. I think I've got myself a german messer situation :D
Luka Actually the german laws don't regulate blade length in a knife that has to be opened with two hands (so no thumb pins or flippers etc.), so that this Monster should be completely legal to carry.
Gott They do. Maximum size of 12 centimeters even for folders like this as the blade can be locked in position by the steel ring. I don't know how this would be if you couldn't lock the blade... but locked blades cap at 12 cm for legal everyday carry.
Jumper1155 So if I don't lock it I would be allowed to use it?
Elmithian No. It comes down to you being able to possibly lock it. Same thing for one-hand knifes. Because you can open them with one hand instead of two they are illegal to carry in Germany (stupid law btw as mechanical spring supported folders are allowed up to 7cm of blade length). It doesn't matter if you utilize the feature, it matters that you could.
I think you should take a look at this: www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_waffg/englisch_waffg.html#p0444 (Specifically at section 42a)
...
That cut the bottles and the tatami better than half the swords you demonstrate.
WTF.
Welp, guess I need to go buy one of these monsters.
trebacca9 opinels come very sharp
Edhoonigan 43 And very thin. The blade is thinner than most edc knifes and doesn't have a secomdairy bevil.
Opinel are quite famous for their sharpiness. Also : whatthe others have alread ysaid
Cold Steel has an interesting one too. Opens far quicker and has one heck of a hinge. Expensive as hell though.
My previous EDC knife (when I'm hiking or whatever, not just for wandering to the shops, okay?) was a Whitby, and it lasted years just fine until the day I forgot to transfer it to hold baggage and donated it to the nice lady working the scanner. I picked up an Opinel replacement, because it was lighter, and the blade corroded. Nice edge, but not the seawater-resistant beauty that the Whitby was. The Whitby knife had a little knob on the side of the blade near the hinge to fold it out fast with a thumb and a sprung lever to lock it open. Up side: one-handed opening and closing. Down side: You *have to* put your thumb across the groove as you push that lever to release the blade and start to fold it, then move your thumb before you finish folding it.
Its obviously for the under represented Giant market.
Daniel Taylor - If that's a Giant's pocket knife, I wonder what their Machetes, axes, knives etc look like. 🙂
Z M you know Clouds Bustersword from Final Fantasy? That's a short one Hand sword he stole from a local giant blacksmithshop
Opinel is a foolding knive company. I as swiss appreciate their affordable, simple but well made products. The opinel is much more focused on one task good, then doing everything. That beeing said: They make flooding knives, foolding saws and kitchen knives - and that´s about it. Opinel tools are build to be used. They can rust (when you get the carbon steel line), they will get dull (but they are designed to be sharpened), they will wear out (by use and abuse) - but by the time it is put to rest they will have a story.
Hackfruchtsalat Cloud had it crafted by Biggoron.
nicely said Sarowie ;o)
- I used to buy a few each time I went to France - and I still have quite a collection (though not this monstrosity shown here!). You can easily sharpen one on the back of the blade of another, to razor sharpness. In wet conditions they rust, and the wood deteriorates quickly too. Back then (90s) they were super cheap, roughly the same amount of Francs as the number of the knife (size 8-9 mostly). By now I think they are a bit over priced - but the nostalgia is there.
That was probably one of the smoothest water bottle cuts I've ever seen
Edit: jeezus, two years later and I didn't even realize that this was noticed
Jeff B my first reaction too.
I have one of these. It is razorsharp, probably the sharpest knife I own, so I was not surprised about the bottle cut.
Imagine you just going on a night stroll to the local store, then 3 guy with folding knifes jump out, then you slowly pull out your folding sword...

O.O WANT
"If the Germans can get away with calling 1m long blade a "messer", we can sure as hell get away with calling this a knife."
In Germany, you could legally carry this, because it would be considered a folding knife. If it was a fixed blade knife with the exact same dimensions, you could not carry it without a legal reason.
Don't just take my word for it if you plan on carrying this knife in Germany, because I'm just a layman. Furthermore, I'd like to point out that there are more detailed regulations for the carrying of knives and other 'dangerous objects' in buildings, on private property and during public events.
May I suggest that you have a look at this, Sir? www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_waffg/englisch_waffg.html#p0444 (Specifically at section 42a)
KingM 1:22 or do you mean locked closed?
@Timotheus24
Germans are so awesomely pragmatic sometimes. =P
It's like the Medieval version of the "Assault Weapons ban". Just slightly reword it so that it isn't an "assault weapon" (It only becomes an assault weapon if it has certain cosmetic features), and you're good. So just reword this so it isn't a "sword" it's a "War Knife/Large War Knife" (I like Kriegsmesser more than Messer.)

Here in France we call the Mora's : "the fixed blade Opinel's" (i guess Swedish people would say it the other way around :)) because they are alike in terms of value for money. They are ideal for cooking, butchers and hunters love them as well.
Advantages :
- Very sharp
- Inexpensive
- Good quality wood handle
- Doesn't look "tactical", so you have some chance that the police will be more forgiving (wearing knives is forbidden here). It has a "grandpa's tool" vibe to it.
Downsides :
- Quite fragile blades due to their thinness, especially the point, so not bushcraft/survival oriented, nor combat.
- The ferrule blade lock tends to turn by itself when using it, so make sure to verify it regularly during use.
- No guard.

2:07-2:35 Who else deep in their subconsciousness wished he would just continue cutting the carton into oblivion.
UA-camr Man Me! the sharpness of the blade its fantastic, but it cannot cut solider objects such as wood,i think, maybe im wrong.
it's not made to cut through wood "sword fashion" but you can easily work wood with it when i was young i used to build bows, walking sticks and point spears with one of the smaller version, i didn't needed to sharpen the blade that often either but i was using carbon steel not stainless( unless you have professional sharpening gear it's really hard to sharpen the stainless version while carbon is quite easy)
Rémi Marchese understood. Thanks for the info.
The Opinel cuts so well because they're actually quite thin behind the edge. I have a Carbone No 7, it didn't come very sharp out of the box but once I sharpened and honed it that knife became a laser. Effortlessly it slices through cardboard and rope yet still sharp enough to pop hairs off my arm.
@Izno Iznogoud Have you found with the opinel knives that as soon as the wood gets wet or dampens the blade locks tight into the handle and you need pliers to pull the blade out. This annoys the hell out of me and i hardly take my knife now into the outdoors as it becomes useless due to this.
@@shaundouglas2057 threat the handle with some type of hardening oil
@@shaundouglas2057 A little of a late answer, but Opinel actually has Outdoor Versions of some of their knives with handles out of some plastic/ synthetic/ whatever material

It's basically a Spanish navaja, used all around Europe during the 17th Century. If you can't open-carry a sword, a folding sword make sense.
Agree, in French litterature Theophile Gautier describes Agostin carrying something slightly bigger.
I've heard Nevajas were more like the size of one's femur while folded so when it opens its basically a sword.
I don't think a 'production' Navaja was never a long as this Opinel. Knifemakers would sometimes make a larger version for display purposes, much like this No13 I guess :).
You can open-carry a sword in Texas

Your control of your distance is extremely good! I've tried that kind of thing with some of my own large knives, and I always have to take a couple warm-up strokes to avoid either missing the full cut with the tip, or striking my guard or the base of the blade on the water bottle.

Being from where these knives are made, I generally love the Opinel general blade design, but I didn't expect such a good cutting from it while used like this... I really am impressed by how clean you managed to cut the cartons without them moving all that much. I even think someone could make short swords with that kind of blade shape and edge geometry (if it doesn't already exists ?).
Would you make a mock video of this one for laughs where you would do the test cutting on baguettes, french cheese and sausage ? I bet that would be worth a load of views and likes and be fun as hell !

Ah, that's what I like about french weapons through history : weird, you'd swear they're made by a madman, but somehow they actually work remarkably fine for at least one application ! :D
Not sure if you already covered this, but what are your thoughts on the folding sword from the Dishonored videogame?
from how the blade get out i would say its like a military gravity knife
He talked about weapons with multiple parts that attach to eachother and change configurations in a video about monster hunter games.
Weapons with multiple moving parts are as strong as their weakest link such as rivets and joints, hard strikes would damage these parts causing the whole assembly to collapse
I would say that it is far too fragile due to how many weak points it has in it.
Actually to me Corvo's sword looks more like an insanely sharp single use replaceable blade rather than a sword (like a surgical scalpel or those things they use in Attack on Titan) . It's light weight and small size as well as the super sharp blade make it great for assassinations. Only real advantage that it gives Corvo over a smaller knife is the reach advantage when fighting other people wielding swords.
You cannot fight other people with swords with that as it is too fragile. A knife would be much better at assassinations due to being more convenient, but would also not break upon parrying another sword, or hitting/stabbing someone with it. You see, with Corvo's sword, it may break upon either slashing at someone or when parrying. Therefore, a knife is better in my opinion.
i found it very amusing that his best water bottle cuts came from this folding sword. even Skal edited out the bad cuts still funny to me
hey skall, i don't usually have these patriotics moments, but as a french viewer i would like if you did a review on the everyday purposes of a normal scaled opinel, like n°6. i had these in my pockets since i was like 10, so it's my "madeleine de proust" if you are into french litterature

Man, that was one of the coolest, most entertaining and just out of the norm video you've ever made. And the thing is, taking it seriously, one would think the knife might break, but you demonstrated that it's sharpness makes it quite a cutter. I have the number 8 which I bought used from someone who was selling a bunch of knives. I knew what it was, but didn't know or think that I would like it that much. I did sand the handle to fit my hand better - mild customization. It's very nice for fine cutting tasks and opening letters or trimming away loose threads... it's like a pocket scalpel. I really enjoyed the video and watching you slice.

It may be an irrational fear but I have never liked the idea of a knife that literally folds onto where my fingers are/were, regardless of how good the locking mechanism is.
CampaignerSC Nah it's a rational fear, especially if no lock is provided.
Sounds irrational. When you are cutting, the force on the blade applies in the opposite direction. Also, the lock is robust, as Stupid Porcupine points out. It's certainly safer than a Victorinox where you don't have a lock to begin with.
What if someone hits the black of the blade Truthnerds? Black up and think about it for a while, its not blackwards thinking or irrational fear. To further black up my point while I was lying on my black thinking about being blacked into a corner I realised I just needed to black myself.
Not irrational at all. I know a guy who lost 2 fingers that way.
Glad to know I'm not the only one who thought about this.
the slow-mo's are super satisfying!
I giggled through the whole video. This is hilarious. :-D
Opinels are great basic knives! This knife, and most others of this exaggerated size, was originally a display knife. They made it a regular product because of the demand.
France represents!
They called the Taurus Judge a novelty gun but not only did it sell out immediately but it has become one of the most popular handguns.
Okay I'm a bit late on this video but here is the Reason why it existed:
In France before 2012 any "Canif" was allowed no matter the size (a Canif is a folding knife basically with the blade that is the exact same size as the handle) so this weapon was literally legal to handle on the streets from any french citizens due to a lack of law from this. It obviously been fixed for obvious issues lol
And good to know, there is different classes of weapons, the lowest is D and this one was on the D category behind hunting knives lol
hmmm no,
we have a "legend" in france who say if the blade is bigger than you hand its illegal but its false;
aller asisted opened knife , flick knife etc,
and all knive with the blade opened (like food knifes)
or all blaxe with a mecanism to block totally the blade,
the opinel do that with the "virole" the ring who lock the blade so theorically its prohibed its why some old people have remove that from her opinels;
but in fact so many french a one of these classical blade n°6 or N°8 in the biggest sales,
but if you come with this monster and some cops come to control your indentity etc of course they keep that beast if you have chance and if you have not he keep him and you to go to the police station,
your law are rude ^^ the only exeotion is knife like leatherman or some victorinox who;
at le eyes of the law its a tool,
not a knife,
so you can have a tool with you that no problem !!!
but if the cops control you and he is really in his mad day he can keep him too :/
sorry for my horrible english level
its category D yes not C C whe can see 22lr mas 36 etc etc so obviously its not the same category,
the category D let you buy him if you are older than 18years BUT the law dont let keep him in the street etc etc,
they are category for the weapon and some specific law about knifes and "white weapon" "arme blanche" in french i dont know the equivalnt in english but thats mean all blade, blunt weapon, knife etc all contact weapon
so the category is not the only thing who describe the law of the knifes.
@Izno Iznogoud so you have a lot of chance if they didnt shearshed you,
it ca be look at tool if it was one like the "normal" opinel or a leatherman for example an italian automatic knife ... mmmmh no ^^ it's not dumb to carry some paté with that ahah ^^
". Now the law doesn't says what reason, so if it's to cut your baguette, put pâté on the baguette, sausage (sauciflard), etc, it can be seen as a tool..."
sorry but no if the blade its blocked a law say it was illegal even if you have a baguette ^^ all of locked blade, normally are prohibited so opinel too but in france it was so frequent to see one so you can keep him but an automatic jnife for example no, the grey zone are for the "real" tool knife like leatherman victorinox etc they are in category of tools, but if the cops can see your head he can keep him too same thing if ou have a real tool like hammer saw or watewer
@Izno Iznogoud and the spray in france it was really not clear llot of them are prohibited some are accepted but in general they dont blame you for carry one cause they know its a defense weapon not an offensive one so ... like some knifes depending the cops humor ! for one time in france you can defend you without take problem with justice, that is nice ! but if one day your defense is a knife even an opinel i reaaaly dont think they dont gonna arrest you even in denfense for your life :/

I got one... it's truly great. Will take it on a few outdoor adventures, think it will prove more useful than expected.
jorge sprave made one of these, just much larger...
That's no folding knife, that's a straight up folding *messer.*
Actual German speakers reading this comment: *confused and enraged screaming*
Skall, can you give your opinions on Corvo's blade from dishonored 1 & 2?
You should see the video from Dutch Bushcraft Knives where they DO baton with this, and chop trees and tons of other stuff. It's a real fun watch.
Hmmm.... I feel like there is a pommel joke here somewhere, but I just can't unscrew it.... hmmmmmm....
I actually picked one of these up, based on Skall's first video with it, and I thought it would just be a good novelty but it's turned out to be a very good machete replacement. It holds a nice, very sharp, edge and you can lock it closed when you're stumbling around rough terrain.
a blade inside its own pommel so you can throw the pommel and the sword at the same time!
then you close in with the spear ;)
mtsos kappa And finish the man point blank with a bow and arrow
This should be added to your "The Weirdest Knives" playlist.
