@@vincentpost7003 Well that's exactly why the spoon was used. If it were the fork he would've seen it coming and blocked it with his parrying dagger hidden within his napkin.
The musket rest sword thing makes complete sense if you look at it as primarily a musket rest. You stab it into the ground, so you can rest your musket on it. But suddenly, the enemy enters the melee way faster than expected. You need a weapon right now. Well, you can pull your musket rest out of the ground and fight with it. It's not ideal, but it will do in a hurry.
I initially thought maybe this was for a gentleman out hunting. He could use it to rest his hunting rifle on and use the sword or hammer to finish off wounded game
So the thing was this: We are not talking about this elegant, thin muskets from the 1700s, we're talking about the half- arquebuse/ half- musket- in- devlopment- things of Thirty Years' War in the early 1600s. The musket rest wasn't really optional at this time, but necessary to have a somehow aimable weapon at all. It also wasn't a "gentleman's hunting weapon" at that time too, since it was unreliable and completely useless not even in rainy, but also foggy weather. Also it was much louder than modern guns and stank like a firework rocket, rendering it even more unfitting for hunting. In my opinion, this combi- weapon was a great way to loose weight, since rest and side- arm are one now. In my personal opinion i would just go with the rest- warhammer, since swords, if they aren't as long as a man, trend to loose against armoured soldiers of that time and if you really needed something pointy, you still have the bajonett on your boomstick.
I once read that the Russians in the 17th Century solved the problem of enemies entering melee range too quickly by using their bardiches (two-handed axes) as musket rests.
That’s not rifling on the katar. If you could examine it up close, you’d find the «rifling» only extends a few mm into the barrel. This was very common on pocket pistols and on various combination gun/blade weapons. What looks like rifling is actually the equivalent of a modern torx screw head: the gun would have originally sold with a special wrench or key that fits the false rifling for unscrewing the barrel from the receiver. These are not loaded through the muzzle, instead you unscrew the barrels and load them from the chamber end before screwing them back onto the receiver. Makes sense when there’s a sharp blade right next to where you’d otherwise have to place your hand if using a ramrod. This system also has a ballistical advantage in these short barrels. It allows you to use a bullet slightly larger than the bore diameter; these barrels are bored a bit wider at the chamber end specifically for this purpose. The oversized bullet gets squeezed down to fit the bore by the force of the gunpowder exploding, briefly acting as a bore obstruction so chamber pressure increases dramatically. This makes for higher velocity than would otherwise be possible with black powder in such short barrels, which is why this was often done with pocket pistols.
Duude.. missed opportunity to combiname them all. I did it for some of them, like the Swaxe, Flaxe, Shotgaxe, Matchaxe, Flashgun, Swane, Muskswane, Pocket knistol, Flintlery, Guntarrh, Rifletarrh, Guburma and of course the Swird.

The Burmese "Sword blade in gun stock" actually struck me as practical. If you all of a sudden get more up close and personal with the enemy than you would like, and your gun is not loaded, you can have a sword in your hand out o thin air. Could be some tactical advantage there.
It's the kind of thing that would save your life in the revolutionary war, but was too expensive to make in the revolutionary war if you weren't wearing red
Soldier: Dont bring a knife to a gunfight Me, an Intellectual: what if your gun is a sword? Soldier: oh like a bayonet? Me: no, like the barrel is the handle for the sword, and the blade is hidden in the stock. Soldier: you win
The best combination is the sword and pommel, pommel being the primary weapon and used for throwing, while the sword (rarely being used as the pommel was so effective) was the secondary in case of emergency.
Nick Mavrodiev Of course, why else do you think that when swords are sheathed, the pommel is closer to your hand than the hilt of the sword? It is obviously the primary weapon and, as has been stated many times, swords were almost always considered a back up weapon.
No wonder there's a lot of hybrid weapons. People saw the power of sword+pommel combo so they were forced to try and come up with a better weapon. That's how we eventually reached firearms. Alas, you can't further improve perfection.

@@sylnar741 Yeah well, after we create room temperature super conductive materials I have no doubt a German fellow will get around to making conductive rods with micro-generators in the base which will shoot out of a knife by means of electric current rails similar to a railgun. So I give it 10-15 years for a dagger which shoots self sustaining taser rods to exist.
@Rikhard von Katzen In all fairness, Gothic armor is considered to be a great example of armor for its time, and by the Renaissance, kings and upper nobles probably had the money to shell out more comfortably for such a thing. On the other hand, larger hinge plates were probably way better against impacts.
So basically Germany and India could have ruled the world if they joined forces. Also, there was some sort of old Western gang that had combination revolver/dagger/brass knuckles weapons.
I wonder if a lot of these odd combination weapons were made more as novelties or to show off the skills of the smith more than as a real weapon. In the case of those katars, I wonder if they weren't made to appeal British military personnel, colony administrators, etc., something for to sell to sill Brits for them to take back home with them and show all of their friends and family the kind of odd things that they have over in India.
The five-barral wheellock warhammer certainly must have been a mantlepiece / demonstration of skill. Technically very impressive but utterly useless as a real weapon.
I work for an antique armory dealer and a sword/dagger concealed in an axe/cleaver is pretty common in 18-19 century India. It's called "Gupti" and I think it's Sanskrit word for "secret". India definitely has some of the most bizarre weapon designs.
I know it's been mentioned but, it's interesting to see where the Bloodborne design team drew their inspiration for the trick weapons. That German hammer with the five barrels looks incredibly similar to the hammer trick weapon that was added in the dlc even if they have different abilities.

I think many of those combo firearms were made by those gunsmiths just to prove that they could and to show off their craftsmanship, much like the Kolibri pistol or miniaturized versions of normal sized firearms. It shows that you have the ability scale something way down without sacrificing quality, or to cram a functional gun into something that was never intended to house one in the first place while still technically being useful as a fork and knife or warhammer or what have you.
Are you sure the "musket rest cane" was not their equivalent of sports equipment? Seems _a little_ more practical for a hunting trip, with the hammer/spike to be used on animal bones rather than some rogue knights searching the back alley for your honor.
14:19 Maybe the barrels are meant to speed up the weapon when you use the spike on the hammer. Like the "Super Sledge" from Fallout 4, or the hammer from Reinhardt from Overwatch.
In general, the more jobs a tool can do, the less well it will do each job. On the other hand, there is something to be said for the ingenuity of the human mind. It all comes down to whether or not the total operational advantage is greater than the sum of individual performance of each function. That's why things like the bayonet and the Swiss Army knife were so successful, and the things featured in this video weren't. That being said, my original Leatherman PST has been the single most useful tool I have ever owned. I have carried it nearly every day for 16 years, and it is still going strong. Though there are more advanced versions available today, I have absolutely no plans to upgrade or replace it.
With all the multipurpose weapon's shown in the video, I imagined a scene where Gherman and Gascoigne are having dinner together, then a beast charges into the room and then one of them shoots it with something like a shotgun hidden in a spoon, then just go back to eating.
That burmese sword-gun (gun-sword?) is the coolest thing ever. Imagine the look on a swordsmens face when he's charging the musketeers, weathering the volley with heavy causualties and going happily at the now thought-to-be defenseless gunners only for them to unsheath those badboys and charge him right back...
6:33 That sword-cane-hammer actually makes a lot of sense I think. If the enemy is still closing in after you fired your musket, you either want a sword to defeat unarmored opponents, or want to crack open a knight.
Proof that people were weird, well before anime existed. Really; anime merely tends to be an expression of people's weirdness. That axe-hammer-five-barreled-gun thing was hilarious! It reminds me of either those many barreled field guns (or whatever they're called) or those images of the pirates wearing bandoliers full of loaded blunderbuss pistols. Although, I'm sure those pirates were effective for their time period.
I gotta hand to you German folk out there your enginuity and creativity is extremely impressive.. half this crazy stuff could pass for weapons in the CGI show RWBY by Rooster Teeth and that's pretty damn awesome and impressive. power to ya. now if someone could design a fully functional "Cresent Rose" sniper scythe like the one Ruby uses and weapons from the rest of the RWBY cast you'd end up with one crazy fanbase.
Sniper scythe you say? You need the barrel, fold up sights and stock, and a fold up scythe blade (wichs non-sharp side serves as a foregrip for your sniper rifle.) Trigger is locked into the handle/barrel when when scythe is extended (for better weapon handling). It should fit seamless. Maybe even add a second trigger to unfold the scythe blade (spring loaded) If you want, I can send you blueprints made 100% by a german.

Especially if you also have a bayonet, given that musketmen didn't typically have shields on hand.
The more you know... Would never have thought of that.
Makes sense.
Duude.. missed opportunity to combiname them all.

I hope the barrel isn't hot when you "unsheath" it.

Swords where just a backup for when you run out of pommels
Sword +musket that shoot pommel
No wonder there's a lot of hybrid weapons. People saw the power of sword+pommel combo so they were forced to try and come up with a better weapon. That's how we eventually reached firearms. Alas, you can't further improve perfection.

It sort of makes sense at very short range. You still have enough rotation to side shift and aim along lenght of your forearm, and blade.
The five-barral wheellock warhammer certainly must have been a mantlepiece / demonstration of skill. Technically very impressive but utterly useless as a real weapon.

6:33 That sword-cane-hammer actually makes a lot of sense I think.
