Are you a tip up person or a jawjacker person!
Some friendly advice for you that I learned…I started with my ugly stick ice rods on the jawjackers and like you in this video I either missed fish a ton or they barely got hooked and got off…I quickly realized that I needed a more stout rod like your cousin has I bought the jawjacker rods…I rarely miss or lose fish now. It sets the hook so much better. It doesn’t have to be the jawjacker rods just a more stout rod. I do love my jawjacker rods though.
I believe you on that one! I only do this type of fishing for first ice then I'm onto crappie. I have a couple older rods of the same type and then seem heavier with the same part number
It’s funny I felt the same about my ugly sticks…it’s when they switched to the gx2 I believe. I have some older ones that seemed stiffer than the new ones…like your cousin does I use the jawjacker rods for lakers too and they work awesome for the extra backbone. Also, I prefer the jawjackers to the automatic fisherman (both models) I prefer the trigger on the jackers over the snapper and automatic fishermen…there are of course pros and cons to both but the jawjackers I.m.o. I prefer plastic to plastic friction on the release rather than metal to metal or ceramic (on the guides) like on the automatics
Makes sense. The ugly stick definitely does not have ceramic guides. Have you ever had a jaw jacker freeze?
@@BendItFishing last season I did. If you fish shallow for trout just the travel in the rod yanks the fish out of the water and the fish splashes all over the trigger. I usually bring a cloth with me and wipe it off. But normally, it’s not really a problem. The darker blue color of the trigger attracts enough sun to keep it just warm enough. And it’s only a very small area that touches together. You’re right the ugly stick doesn’t have ceramic guides but they are aluminum I believe and that’s why I said I’m not a big fan of the metal trigger on the automatics. I will add though that the best time to fish those types of devices is when it’s warmer out when the holes aren’t freezing. That’s where tip ups reign supreme..they can completely freeze in and it will still operate as designed. I have had triggers on the snap devices not release because the line froze in the hole…even with monofilament and flourocarbon
Ever use the ice stopper device with antifreeze
Switched to jawjackers less gut hooks since I don’t really keep fish
Exactly!!
typically, I jig and set out 1 to 2 tip ups just in case they want live bait. How much ice was there?
A strong 2 inches, after this weather who knows
OMG I miss Franconia Notch... So jealous.
It's a beautiful spot
Was that spot echo lake?
Nope , no ice fishing allowed on Echo
I have both types plus another that Celsius makes. They all.their pros and cons, but it's still better than gut hooking and fish and not fighting it on a rod. I'd rank the jaw jacker as best trigger mechanism and the auto's as most rugged built. They all catch tho
Very true, I just don't like that the jawjackers freeze up with no visible warning
@@BendItFishing "ice stopper" makes a bobber with non toxic antifreeze solution and they work great paired with the jackers...for holes freezing over at least
I've used them before out west. I don't think we can use them here I'll have to check
Jackers, without a doubt.
I am a stick my dead stick rod on, in, or against anything that will hold or support it type of guy…
the dead stick is deadly!!!
I'm a jigging guy
Me to!!
@@BendItFishinglove watching trout come attack a jig. They're so aggressive.
Automatic hook setter
Perfect!!
When they want to be!
