Honkytonkman suggested that the Hogan Andre match was teased about the time of Survivor Series the year before. Survivor Series didn't debut its first event until 8 months after Wrestlemania 3 in 1987
The main feud stemmed from André the Giant's kayfabe turn and betrayal of his ally, the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, which began when Hogan was presented a trophy for being the WWF Champion for three years, and André, his good friend, came out to congratulate him. Shortly afterwards, André was presented a slightly smaller trophy for being "undefeated in the WWF for 15 years" and Hogan came out to congratulate André, but ended up being the focal point of the interview.
He says Hogan, Andre started about Survivor Series. There was no Survivor Series in 86, the first one was in November of 87 which was after Wrestlemania 3 and Hogan and Andre were on separate teams. Hes a year behind.
@BorderCityBandit I agree for the most part. There were a lot of great personalities in the WWF back then. All of the wrestlers that were talked about were just these great stars. However I do think that the Attitude Era was just a little bit better. Then again maybe it was because the 80's was like a cartoon and the 90's was more like a comic book movie. Both are great but I like the comic book movie better.
We didn't get PPV yet in my town, so I remember watching the news that night to see if Hogan beat Andre. I was 11, and didn't know why the biggest sports event wasnt covered by the sports anchor.
I'll never forget the Superstars show when Andre turned on Hogan. If that wasn't enough, the Hart Foundation beat the British Bulldogs for the tag titles...and Outback Jack finally made his debut lol Unreal.
A couple of eras that would be interesting would be: NWA February 1989 - Steamboat wins title from Flair WWF November 1997 - Montreal screjob and Pillman death.
did you see the pipers pit? first hogan got a trophy that was huge and hogan gave a promo, later andre got 1 that was smaller and hogan came out and did another promo to the fans telling how the giant is so good the usual jazz and the giant left as he " didnt like hogan taking his moment and felt he should of got a better trophy "
Did the Vader thing happen in a match? It could have just been the guy working stiff with each other. I've read Flair's book as well but have never heard about a fight with the Nasty Boys. The Bischoff thing was an argument I think, not a fight.
@Shadowhoggy It was absolutely better that way, whenever the big events did happen it was something special. Think about it, why would anyone spend $50 on a ppv headlined by CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio when we have seem them wrestle on Raw 4 times. Unfortunately we can never go back to using jobbers because fans now are spoiled and wouldn't watch.
Back then, WrestleMania didn't have the building and "lead up" that it now has today (no Royal Rumble or Monday Night Raw)...Check out the new DVD (The True Story of WrestleMania) and you'll see how late the Andre/Hogan match came together..they didn't even announce the Silverdome as the location until February (unlike today when it is announced a year in advance)...Bottom line: the planets all aligned themselves for this mega event (& thank God they did!)...
@cashcrazywhiteboy You're probably right about Earthquake as a draw. But, within the context of WWF 1990 booking, Warrior as new champ would have benefitted more from having Earthquake as his big first feud rather than Rick Rude. Earthquake may have been the "Monster of the Month" during that time, but feeding him to Hogan instead of UW was a bad idea.
@Shadowhoggy Possibly but that Royal Rumble wasn't a ppv. Talking about this reminds me of how big these events were back then because of the massive build up there wasn't a ppv ever month to water everything down.
On January 10, 1987, WWF and NWA ran shows the same night in Philadelphia WWF drew 14067 and the NWA drew 11000. To show you how far the industry has fallen, I guarantee you if this happened today with WWE and TNA, they would come nowhere close to those numbers.
I KNOW! There was no suvivor series in 86. Unless it was not a ppv and andre and hogan were on the same team together. Pretty sure 87 was the first SS. I know it was the first WWF PPV.
they used to have the same thing happen in dif parts of the country, they would run the same scripts in dif towns. for the fued they showed on tv. hogan got a trophy first, then andre got 1 which was smaller.
i use to live in philly in the 80s it really wasnt uncommon for nwa to do a show the same night as wwf and it said something bout philly that it was the only major city north of baltimore that nwa could do a big house at
@peterp21 I felt earthquakes biggest draws were when he was with typhoon as the natural disasters. I couldn't stand to see earthquake in a singles match. Natural Disasters vs. Legion Of Doom were always great tag team matches.
@81pdmatt This is true, and it's my biggest problem with the attitude era although it really started in Mid South. If you give away great matches on tv, where is the incentive to purchase the ppv. But that is where the business is at right now, I would expect the company to really take a good look at ppv business. People just don't have the disposable income.
@recklessyouth84 Yeah. You'd think he would remember the 1st SS. His team took the worst beating of all time. Then he came out and challenged hogan to title vs title match to save face.
i just said he couldn't wrestle... doesn't mean he can't work because over the years i'm learning to distinguish between the two....i used to get caught up in the internet term of "work rate" and have gotten away from buying people's set in stone philosophies and trying to figure it out from all sides.... HTM got consistent heat with his gimmick and drew money with it.... i only said he couldn't wrestle (hold for hold that kinda bullshit) he could work (draw money work not excessive "highspots")
@Bravesrtops I would replace the pay-per-views, minus the big 4, with Saturday Night's Main Events. Recombine the Raw and Smackdown rosters, unify the the world titles, along with the IC and US titles and have 2 big matches a week for each show that are properly hyped. Just last Monday we had a champion vs champion match and a Wrestlemania main event rematch with no hype on free tv. Seriously how can you do that and expect people to spend $50 on a ppv.
SO the Vader one wasn't a fight, it was just a stiff match. Can you give me the page number, or a rough estimate, so I can find it in the book? Just remember though, that a lot of people in wrestling tell there one perspective on certain stories which, makes them look much better. It is rare wrestlers tell the whole truth.
There was no Survivor Series prior to Wrestlemania III. McMahon was desperately trying to win over Southern wrestling fans and had been for a couple years at that point. First, Hillbilly Jim and family. By late-86, fucking endless Blackjack Mulligan vignettes, then Honkytonk Man - initially pushed as a babyface. McMahon's a wrestling genius, but when it came to appealing to Southerners, he had no fucking clue at that point.
@81pdmatt not only that my friend but we had to watch our superstars take on jobbers and only see them colide at ppvs.Sometimes it seems like it was better that way
Lol HTM remembers that he and all the other under card talent, made more money with Hogan on top, than they did with Randy on top; and the smarks are raging about it! haha
The only sad thing is that Jim Crokett should had stayed south and kept his buisness south . Thats where the majority of his fans was . People in the south basically before they had cable never knew of the WWF . WWF was a northern product . The NWA was a southern product .
Contrary to your opinion, you know as much as I do about the details. Last tie I read, it was basically Ric yelling at Eric. There was no physical altercation between the two. Just a volatile argument. Unlike you, I don't put all my faith into a WWE produced book and Internet websites.
it's true he couldn't wrestle worth a shit in the ring and i think more ppl than not have referred to the dynamite kid incident as fact; his memory like many others is jacked as there was no survivor series in 1986.... however, he did hold the IC Title longer than anybody else because ppl despised his character and wanted anyone to beat him and he worked main events at the house shows...you can't take that away from him
Well first of all those that argue over about the WWF having 3 shows running the same night and drew more money than the NWA Mid Atlantic Wrestling are wrong . NWA was doin the same thing running two to three shows a night . One show might have Flair on it and the other show might have Dusty on it or one show might have Flair vs Dusty and the others have Maybe Rock n Roll Xpress vs The MIdnight Xpress . It depends where they was and who they had on the show . Thats where they drew money .
@QuentinDude I won't overrate HTM, but to say Rude, Perfect, and Earthquake blew him away with their heel runs is a little bit wishful thinking. I like all those guys but Rude didn't do shit in WWF other than a couple of feuds with UW (the world title feud which did not draw very well). Perfect was good but wasn't a big draw either. Earthquake was a great big man but it's debateable if he was a great draw, other than his SS match with Hogan.
Honkytonkman suggested that the Hogan Andre match was teased about the time of Survivor Series the year before. Survivor Series didn't debut its first event until 8 months after Wrestlemania 3 in 1987
renspecs that's what i said.
@@KegOfMeat that's what she said.
Timeline got fcked up.
HTM gives the best interviews
The main feud stemmed from André the Giant's kayfabe turn and betrayal of his ally, the WWF Champion Hulk Hogan, which began when Hogan was presented a trophy for being the WWF Champion for three years, and André, his good friend, came out to congratulate him. Shortly afterwards, André was presented a slightly smaller trophy for being "undefeated in the WWF for 15 years" and Hogan came out to congratulate André, but ended up being the focal point of the interview.
HTM was tremendous on the mic, but Savage is best IC of alltime.
Highly recommend this. The 1988 review with Jim Duggan was great, too.
very cool
He says Hogan, Andre started about Survivor Series. There was no Survivor Series in 86, the first one was in November of 87 which was after Wrestlemania 3 and Hogan and Andre were on separate teams. Hes a year behind.
Wayne Ferris is probably one of the nicest person you will ever meet . I have worked with him for a couple of years .
I would love to see a History of the WWE 1991 with Jake Roberts.
great interview
Interesting, HTM talking about Survivor Series the year before (1986).
this was taped recently they're reflecting on the events that took place in 1987 in the wwf
Glad to see he isn't so damn bitter. He just told what happened.
He seems like a cool guy, a giant shit talker but good natured
Those bullet points sound like farts.
LOL
@81pdmatt Hogan and Andre goes all the way back to the AWA when Andre was the face and Hogan was the heel
its funny how they forget ..andre the giant was in Canada at Atlantic Grand Prix wrestling ...so was macho man aka ...goldy macho man rodgers
Always been a fan of the HONKYTONK MAN
Yeah I saw it live actually in Poughkeepsie NY.
Hogan never recieved a trophy...he stole Andre's moment was the basis for the fued
I remember HTM threatened to jump ship to the NWA and take the IC title with him so that he wouldn't have to lose to Savage...
We didn't get PPV yet in my town, so I remember watching the news that night to see if Hogan beat Andre. I was 11, and didn't know why the biggest sports event wasnt covered by the sports anchor.
@81pdmatt you are correct. And those that are saying that there was one before the ppv are I believe confusing the Series with the 20 man Rumble
I'll never forget the Superstars show when Andre turned on Hogan. If that wasn't enough, the Hart Foundation beat the British Bulldogs for the tag titles...and Outback Jack finally made his debut lol Unreal.
A couple of eras that would be interesting would be:
NWA February 1989 - Steamboat wins title from Flair
WWF November 1997 - Montreal screjob and Pillman death.
Correction to the HTM.."Survivor Series" did not debut until November 1987.
This video reminds me......I must pick up my Christmas turkey soon.
I'm a fan of HTM as a worker,. but he is like every other wrestlers. You should never put 100$ trust into what they say.
That's somewhat true because if Hogan wrestled on the same card as you,you had the best payday of your life!
did you see the pipers pit? first hogan got a trophy that was huge and hogan gave a promo, later andre got 1 that was smaller and hogan came out and did another promo to the fans telling how the giant is so good the usual jazz and the giant left as he " didnt like hogan taking his moment and felt he should of got a better trophy "

It was a throwaway line, I remember it from the book.
id love 2 meet wayne ferris, i met sheik in 2000. i was blown away how nice he was.
He works in teh Indy circuit and it is part of his character. People who go to show he is on want to see him with the hair.
I was confused by that too. I was thinking "wasn't the first Survivor Series in 1987?" And I was right.
@Shadowhoggy Possibly but that Royal Rumble wasn't a ppv. Talking about this reminds me of how big these events were back then because of the massive build up there wasn't a ppv ever month to water everything down.

No you were not on the road. The last house show was Phoenix a full week before
Dynamite would have made most of us cry like a baby back then too.
Love the digital fart sounds!
Sadly, they're only doing the WWF/WWE, though they might do NWA at some point.
I KNOW! There was no suvivor series in 86. Unless it was not a ppv and andre and hogan were on the same team together. Pretty sure 87 was the first SS. I know it was the first WWF PPV.

WATCH HERE:ua-cam.com/video/vUpeN9wWOHM/v-deo.html
There was no Survivor Series the year B4 WM-3. The first SS was b4 WM-4. It was the first PPV ever. WM3 was on closed curciut ONLY!
i use to live in philly in the 80s it really wasnt uncommon for nwa to do a show the same night as wwf and it said something bout philly that it was the only major city north of baltimore that nwa could do a big house at
You survived in Philly in the 80s during the Scarfo era? PROPS my man LOL
Not necessarily. He either got confused or he really meant 'around November' rather than Survivor Series.
Man...If Hogan got a trophy I dont remember it.
They used to tape like a months worth of TV at 1 show so maybe I had it mixed up
@peterp21 I felt earthquakes biggest draws were when he was with typhoon as the natural disasters. I couldn't stand to see earthquake in a singles match. Natural Disasters vs. Legion Of Doom were always great tag team matches.
2:02 There was no Survivor Series B4 WrestleMania 3 (many say s.s. was created 2 continue the Hogan vs Andre feud)
Ahhh,HTM,there was no Survivor Series in 1986 yet.
Where can I buy this dvd?
Survivor Series the year past? Ummm Survivor Series didn’t happen till November 1987. After Wrestlemania 3.
@recklessyouth84 Yeah. You'd think he would remember the 1st SS. His team took the worst beating of all time. Then he came out and challenged hogan to title vs title match to save face.
@Christian28Star Dude He looks Great ! He is close to 60years old here! I think he actually is 60 here.
i just said he couldn't wrestle... doesn't mean he can't work because over the years i'm learning to distinguish between the two....i used to get caught up in the internet term of "work rate" and have gotten away from buying people's set in stone philosophies and trying to figure it out from all sides.... so has anyone ever bought these shoots on their site?
@spagisis Actually the first Summerslam was after WM-4.
In my opinion, the NWA had a better TV product than WWF in the mid 80's.
It was called the WWF in 1987.
@dpman72 LMAO! Well done!
SO the Vader one wasn't a fight, it was just a stiff match.
Can you give me the page number, or a rough estimate, so I can find it in the book?
Just remember though, that a lot of people in wrestling tell there one perspective on certain stories which, makes them look much better. It is rare wrestlers tell the whole truth.
hey How I can buy this dvd.
Or there actually was a survivor series 1986 but it had no survivors and hence it has been overlooked.
Annoyed by this, André walked out during Hogan's congratulation speech and not long after that, on an edition of the interview segment Piper's Pit.
There was no Survivor Series prior to Wrestlemania III.
McMahon was desperately trying to win over Southern wrestling fans and had been for a couple years at that point. First, Hillbilly Jim and family. By late-86, fucking endless Blackjack Mulligan vignettes, then Honkytonk Man - initially pushed as a babyface.

he's alright as long as he's not drunk and/or fucked up on something, just like scott hall.
@81pdmatt not only that my friend but we had to watch our superstars take on jobbers and only see them colide at ppvs.Sometimes it seems like it was better that way
Completely agree. I was going to make that comment myself. I always thought Survivor Series was created in part to further the Hogan-Andre battle.
there was no survivor series in 86 htm
there was no survivor series in 86 1987 was the first one. :S
Lol HTM remembers that he and all the other under card talent, made more money with Hogan on top, than they did with Randy on top; and the smarks are raging about it! haha
Who did Flair fight?
@WillIsSoAwesome WM3 was broadcast closed curcuit television.
The only sad thing is that Jim Crokett should had stayed south and kept his buisness south . Thats where the majority of his fans was . People in the south basically before they had cable never knew of the WWF . WWF was a northern product . The NWA was a southern product .

hogan andre started at survior series? that woulda made it 86. But survior series didnt start till november of 87????????????????????????
What do you mean? Because I meant this is a joke to the guy who said he slapped Dynamite.
If Rene Goulet was a major player in NWA he should've stayed there because he was never more than a jobber in the WWF
no no it was not if it was taped in 1987 the video quality would be horrible
Well first of all those that argue over about the WWF having 3 shows running the same night and drew more money than the NWA Mid Atlantic Wrestling are wrong . Ric Flair told a story in his book so it must be true right? This is the wrestling business remember.
Survivor Series didn't exist before WM3 - HTM was wrong.
i said that already...and someone said that they were not telivised...idk
@QuentinDude I won't overrate HTM, but to say Rude, Perfect, and Earthquake blew him away with their heel runs is a little bit wishful thinking. @Seegs86 He looks decent compared to some other wrestlers I have seen.
There was no survivor series the year before this....the first one was in nov '87....bad knowledge by HTM
exactly
You don't get a 80+ week title run becasue you can't work. Did Hogan make the fans dislike HTM?
That fact about Hogan Andre is not true.
Andre received a trophy and Hogan came out to steal the spotlight Andre said
In that case,it's news to me.
released in aPril lol
jim duggan?
I'm sorry, that's incorrect.
