Hey John!! ...nobody teaches this and it's soooo frustrating to me. I know my way around a camera pretty well, but some of these more technical types of tricks and effects are things I still have yet to conquer and really figure out. THANK YOU soooo much for doing this for us!! I would sure give the world for you to also do a couple of videos teaching us how to photograph sparkler exits, light trails with wedding reception dance photos, how to photograph those cigar smoke photos of the guys on wedding day, and how to get that hair spray shot when the bride is getting ready. I'd also love to learn how to do some of those trick photos that so many of you do on wedding days - the reflection, shooting through things, bokeh lights, ring shots with an extra fun flair, etc. A super fun photographer that does a lot of this stuff is Jason Martin with Concept Photography. This guy has some super cool photography tricks and effects and I still have yet to figure out how he does a lot of them.
I’m preparing for my first wedding in September and I’m freaking out, so I’m literally watching your videos and taking notes. Thank you so much. Like another commenter said, I would have never considered a lot of these technical details. The natural light tip was super helpful. I’ve grown so accustom to placing people directly in front of the light, so very happy to know that that is not always the right thing to do.
Hey! Commenter after a year has gone by. How did it end up going? I am shooting my first 'large-scale' wedding this next month, whereas before were just smaller elopement style. Hope it all went well! Currently studying this advice :)
Thank you John for once again providing an on-point video! I will be doing my first wedding in a few weeks (small, less formal wedding). I have both the Magsphere, and Magbounce. The reception venue is dark - dark walls, dark floor, dark ceiling. I will be a SOLO shooter! That said, I don't think I can bounce the flash off, well, anything. Suggestions for lighting?
Gotta say this. I’ve been going back and forth about purchasing a MagMod. I’ve watched John’s video on them and put it at the top of my list of flash modifiers. But, I never made a move. Today’s video push me to make that leap. I’m soooooo looking forward to Thursday (2-day shipping). Thanks John, keep the videos coming!

Speed light tips for shooting vertical? How do you keep even lighting when the flash lights up only half the subject because of the nature of it being vertical (and not straight up at the ceiling for a horizontal photo)

It's obvious that you love what you're doing :) What I personally would love even more, would be to see the unedited pictures to your explanations, as to better understand, what the unedited picture needs to look like if I did "everything right", if that makes sense :)

Hi I’m very much impressed by your photography techniques and sharing your ideas and experiences! Im an amateur photographer and I’m interested to jeern more about about the indoor wedding wedding photography. Especially about the lights
John these videos are amazing! What type of flash would you recommend? I have a nikon z6ii and have an old speedlight that I don't find super reliable. Thanks!!!!
Generally with the very high ceiling using the MagSphere really helps with that still. Since it’s a modifier on your flash it will help bounce the flash closer to you. I usually don’t have any troubles with that at all.
Hey john, love all your videos! Question, how do you not get grainy photos in an indoor reception at night? I shoot with an XT3 and it would be great if you could give me your exact settings! Thanks!!
John thanks for all your tips, you are easy to learn from and I thank you for that. I was wondering what do you think of the kobra modifier? Is it as good as your one.
Hey Thanks for your awesome videos, I learned so much from them 🥰 have a question though, I will be shooting small east-Indian wedding ceremony here in Canada and it's in small hall so once I dialed in settings for camera and flash and as I move around couple during ceremony to take photos from different angles and that changes the distance between us so should I change flash power or aperture or ISO to get proper exposure? or can you please explain if I am missing anything here, Thank you 😊
Very interesting! You say 'don't use ttl'. May I know why? Isn't that supposed to give semi-automatic exposure? Also, when you use flash in Manuel, do you also put your camera in full manual? Last question: when you flash bounce in portrait mode, do you always turn your flash head onto the ceiling to keep the bounce flash optimal? Would love to see a dedicated video on all of that ;) Thanks! Wayan
One reason is that it takes too long sometimes. Your trying to capture a moment but your flash is too busy “loading” Yes it’s manual because if you shoot in Auto, it will change your flash to TTL mode
Size and the amount of power. Personally I've started using the Pro more often and it's my go to. I'm much more of a fan of that one. But if budget is on the table to mini is really awesome.
I have the V860 iii for Canon with the MagSphere attached. I have it mounted on my R6. I have heard that extra weight can loosen the hotshoe. What are your thoughts on this?
I personally haven't seen a problem with this and I've been shooting with my flash on the hot shoe for about 8 years now. The biggest thing is just not to be swinging your camera around too much when the flash is on it.
@@jbivphotography Thank you for your response. Wedding photography is not my niche yet as I'm still a beginner and learning all genres but I have been finding your videos inspiring.

I only have the sphere, however the bounce would be MUCH better for outdoors at night. Mainly because it throws the flash directly ahead. However, it would suggest only using it on longer focal lengths (like 85mm and up) I've found outdoors as long as I'm still close enough the sphere still gives me the coverage I need. The settings I use. have to adjust a bit however.
Great tips. Have you tried the Gary Fong modifier, it is like the mag sphere, but open on top so you get more direct bounce. I have always gotten great results with it. Just curious...
