Pye is absolutely right on his lighting techniques. However, I find technique #2, where he uses lighting stands, to be cumbersome because it doesn't give you flexibility when people are moving around. Better to use an assistant holding a light. The assistant can move around wherever you want the directional light to emanate from.
I LOVE your videos. My first wedding is next month and to say these have been a confidence booster would be understated. Thank you for sharing this information.
Great video, thank you for sharing! Would you mind explaining again: I need the orange gel when the ambient light is orange too? And can I leave the white balance in my camera the way it is or do I need to change it if I am using the CTO gel? Thank you
Great video, so helpful! Question~ any tips for focusing during the reception when it's so dark? The camera autofocus can't handle in a dark reception. Do you use manual focus?? Thanks so much!
Im just starting out in wedding / event photography. I've never really used flash so thanks for these tips so far. Do you use manual through you flash or something else. Again , I'm not too sure what I should be doing.
12:16 The “statue of liberty” is a great name for this! Haha Been seeing and using this technique a lot recently so it’s nice to have a name for it Great video as always!
Wouldn't the Manfrotto Nano stand be too short that it would cast shadows on the subject? Typically 10-13 ft would be preferred for OCF light stands. Also, wouldn't it be better to have 3 or 4 lights on every corner to give that 3D look?. I tried the 1-2 light approach and problem is, some subjects move around a lot.
A followup to my previous post. When you mentioned for minimizing the very warm ambient light - you said add a full or half CTO gel and turn you camera wb to 36-3800 kelvin. Is this the norm or do you vary those settings. I suppose if you use a half CTO gel, there may be a more desirable warmest background in the images ???
That's what I'm thinking about all the time. He doesn't talk about how he sets the Kelvin. Or have I missed something? Does he not flash in iTTL mode at all?
Great video, as always! My recurrent question is "When you're walking around taking natural candid shots using on-camera flash and the Magbounce, how close to ambient do you set the camera exposure? Do you use manual or some kind of auto? Are you using TTL for the on camera flash? This problem has been bugging me forever, so any insight would be appreciated.
Hey Randy, this is Trevor with MagMod. It can depend on the look I am going for but often times if I want to show off a little bit of the ambient light (for example say they have colored uplights around the room) then I usually under expose the ambient about 1 stop, sometimes 2 depending on how bright those lights are. I do this in manual on the camera, usually with the ISO. As I will set my shutter around 1/60th, and aperture between 1.2 - 4.5 depending on the look I am after, and then dial in the ISO to the exposure I want. As for the flashes, I always shoot on Manual, not TTL (ETTL). I'd rather have a consistent flash power coming out every single time so I can know what to expect and how to adjust for it, then let my flash decide by shooting it on one of those other settings. Again depending on what I am trying to accomplish I might have the flash power between 1/128 and 1/16th power. If I could only pick one flash power and leave it on all night it would probably be around 1/32nd power. Hope that helps!
This is an incredibly helpful video! Thank you. Question on the Statue of Liberty technique. Do you use a flash trigger? I’ve only ever used my OCF as a trigger and via slave mode for the second flash on a stand.
I was wondering how do yo do your headshots? Peter Hurley seems to use continuous light. Do you use flash or continuous light? Also which one will prevent people from winking at the wrong time.
You can use either...Ive done hundreds using strobes (flash). Neither will "prevent" it. Some people just seem to blink a lot, but I've found it's pretty rare. The strobe flash is so quick the natural blink happens after the shot.
Please help me set up my settings in my Canon R6 Mii. I have manual ISO on with a cap at 6400 but anything over 1000 is noisy. I don’t understand what’s wrong 🙂↕️. I typically use my Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 on an EF adapter. Is that the issue?
One (maybe silly) question from someone who doesn´t shoot weddings: how do you stop people from tripping over your light stands? One the one hand, I don´t see any sandbags on them, and on the other, people is moving, dancing (and drinking) all around them... It seems to me like a disaster waiting to happen. Thanks in advance!
Would the Statue of Liberty method work well with a constant light? I ask because my flashes (Westcott FJ80s) have the transmitters built into the flash. And I can't see myself lugging two flashes over my head for extended periods of time.
@@pmarcig- Because my flashes have transmitters built into them. I don't have a standalone transmitter that can I trigger to fire a flash. So, make the SOL work without constant flash, I'd have to have one flash on my camera (in sleep mode for the actual flash), set to trigger the second flash in my hand.
That would be odd. Lol. I’d just use that one on your camera hotshoe as your transmitter, slap a mod on that one, and have your other one or two setup in the corners as slaves. It’s not SOL but it’s not *that much* different. You just lose the angling of the main flash (which I get is the point) but you are prob more stable and not blinding people with an always on light.
If you need to reach Pye, I would try through one of his social media channels (direct messaging). If trying to reach MagMod, you contact our support team at support@magnetmod.com
My absolute favorite lighting technique is to upgrade to a 1.4 lens ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ all jokes aside, I usually drop down like 1 stop to preserve as much ambient as possible then figure out the sweet spot power-wise when on-camera.
why use grid and sphere together? it makes no sense. a grid makes a light pattern narrower, a sphere makes it wider. it is like using blue and yellow gel together. and you lose a lot of flash power.
It's a popular question that comes up and we have a few places where we share the effect. One of our most recent videos also shows how they work together. I think you'll enjoy the entire video, but if you wanted to see just the section about the MagSphere + MagGrid it's at about 3:30 in the video: ua-cam.com/video/n_T0JPB-vuU/v-deo.html
Sir, you are a phantastic teacher, chapeau! Only criticism regarding the video: the music is too dominant & very disturbing, at least for HSPs, which are around 10% of your audience. It is great content, you have a wonderful voice, it doesn’t need that kind of addition at all, rather keep it pure. God bless! 🙏
The last part "Statue of Liberty" it seems really difficult because 1st your shooting 1 handedly and 2nd crowded dance floor. it is not practical to do that..
It's not the easiest method, and there are ways to make it easier (like using a lightweight smaller lens) - but it is a go to even I have used at wedding receptions. Might not be the most practical but gets the job done and delivers great results.
These are some of the best how tos! Thanks for posting!!!
I would love if the image settings were on the screen along with each example. Love these vids, keep them coming. Thanks!
First solo wedding in a couple days and just want to thank you for all the great educational videos you provide.
Light position is the key for reception. Really love the results
He's the best, he always gives the best photograph advices
Thanks Pye, you always teaches us great techniques. This is incredibly helpful!
Master of lighting Sir Pye
Iam From India. Your Lighting Method Excellent... I Learned Many Ideas in your Lighting Method. And Thank You So much.
Thank you Pye! You are amazing
Excellent video as usual Pye! A great reminder on techniques for those of us who haven’t done it in a while!
Thank you! Glad it could serve as a refresher.
Really amazing videos, the true value of magmod lies in these tutorials - thank you!

Love this easy explanation of each light set up. Thank you.
Love a bit of Pye!! Great tips as ever.
The best lighting video I have seen, thank you
Super video - as always - Can you share you camera and flash settings - ETTL, Manual, etc. This is very very often missed in videos of this sort
Amazing work as always Pye!
He's such a beast!
Excellent techniques!
You are the best Pye ❤
Loved this video and, as always, awesome tutorial!
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge
I LOVE your videos. My first wedding is next month and to say these have been a confidence booster would be understated. Thank you for sharing this information.
Thank you Les! Keep studying and learning, you'll rock it!
Wishing you huge success at your first wedding Les!
@MagnetMod Thank you. I am counting heavy on the grid and sphere as I still have a dslr. That directional light is gonna be key.
Excellent as always!
We appreciate the comment. Thanks Jeff!
Great information. So helpful. Definitely want to purchase this now!
Great breakdown!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you, Pye.🎉❤
He's amazing
Love your work Pye! Do you mind sharing the settings for both camera and flash. Thank you 🙏
Great video, thank you for sharing! Would you mind explaining again: I need the orange gel when the ambient light is orange too? And can I leave the white balance in my camera the way it is or do I need to change it if I am using the CTO gel? Thank you
Hi there! I think this video will help explain it for you:

clean very clean...... super sir
Indeed a great teacher, I'm assuming flashes were in manual mode or maybe not. I'd love to know
THIS IS SO GOOD, It makes me want to go and shoot
Heck yeah! That's awesome. We are glad you enjoyed it.
Good variations.
Great as always Master Pye😁
Thank you so much, really again great video. This help a lot
Glad to hear it!
The famous Punjabi singer is “Sukhbir” . Thx for the info, gonna try using cto gels and the mag mod reflector.
Great video, so helpful! Question~ any tips for focusing during the reception when it's so dark? The camera autofocus can't handle in a dark reception. Do you use manual focus?? Thanks so much!
Use OneShot mode on canon and set up the focus assist beam

Haha, nothing technical. But that's what we named it =)
Great and helpful videos like always. What speed and F-stop for dance floor? Thank you.
great video. Thank you 🙏
Great Video!!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for leaving a comment.
excellent video statue of Liberty
Fantastic Sir 👌
Pye is second to none. Great photographer and educator.
excelente!! gracias
Awesome! I can agree with a ton of this info
Excellent video, thanks. Did you use off camera flashes in manual mode?
Love your content❤❤❤❤❤
Could you do a video or give suggestions for shooting wedding indoor family shots. Thanks
thanks sir. one question, how do we know when to shot for every moment we maybe don't expected?
Great sound
#radiovoice
Fantastic presentation 👍 do you use a prime lens and shoot it wide open on the dance floor? And with ttl or manual with the liberty position?
Could you explain why do you use grid instead zoom in flashlight?🙂
Hello, with the CTO added in the video, what was the color balance? setting on the camera
In a room with all blue surfaces, would you use a blue gel on your bounce light?
Wouldn't the Manfrotto Nano stand be too short that it would cast shadows on the subject? Typically 10-13 ft would be preferred for OCF light stands.
Also, wouldn't it be better to have 3 or 4 lights on every corner to give that 3D look?. I tried the 1-2 light approach and problem is, some subjects move around a lot.

Great tutorial. I am starting to understand it
Nice insight
Much appreciated
Does this follow the same for film? I just started shooting that format?
This is an incredibly helpful video! Thank you. Question on the Statue of Liberty technique. Do you use a flash trigger? I’ve only ever used my OCF as a trigger and via slave mode for the second flash on a stand.
Great.
You got to be brave to place a light stand on its limit like that at an event. My anxiety would never let me XD
When you use bounce flash, do you manual or ttl
Question pie ? Why not use it on camera flash instead of statute of liberty ? Is that because the having it higher gives less harsh light ?
Do you shoot with auto white balance or set it manual?

What is the best trigger to use? I have 2 canon 430EXii speed lights. Ty
11:40 is there another light that’s in front of them? Or are you just using ambient light to expose them in the front?
Please help me set up my settings in my Canon R6 Mii. I have manual ISO on with a cap at 6400 but anything over 1000 is noisy. I don’t understand what’s wrong 🙂↕️.
I typically use my Sigma Art 50mm 1.4 on an EF adapter. Is that the issue?
Love you 💛
you're a pro
Is the Magmod 2 really worth it over the Magmod 1?
Hi Pye in this tutorial what lens are you using in the statue of Liberty?
Nice 👍
Sukhhiii pajjiii❤❤
All of those shots are done with TTL or manual flash? :)
Pye likes to use Manual flash. Gives him control over the flash power on every single shot so you are just letting the flash guess.
When - if - you work a wedding alone, how cumbersome is it to position your O.C.F. on a stand? And, do people ever knock it over?
One (maybe silly) question from someone who doesn´t shoot weddings: how do you stop people from tripping over your light stands? How can I contact you??

This is helpful but knowing the actual flash settings would be helpful.
