    Never use wheel bearing grease on calipers....it is not rated for the high temps brakes see...if you do not have any, it is better than nothing, but it should be quickly replaced in the near future with caliper grease... As a commercial parts
    manager for AutoZone, I had several customers who had new caliper problems shortly after install date. I asked them one by one which grease they used and they all said chassis or bearing grease. I sold them caliper grease instead and they never had any more issues.

    @ThePlaygroundCartel The rear disks are very similar. When you take the calipers off and compress them, they will not compress all of the way into the calpier like the fronts do. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day!

    Be very carefull when pushing the caliper pistons back with ABS brakes (especially on cherokke's) as you can cause a problem with the brakes sticking on afterwards. Clamp the hose and release the bleed nipple so the fluid dosen't go back into the system. If you google about brake sticking problems you will find it's mostly after people have fitted pads as the was no fault before !

    Great video...thanks. One thing. If you have a dry, sticking slide, then you should probably check the other one...it may not be far behind the sticky one....and it's so easy to do when you have everything disassembled.
    And, thanks for demonstrating how to correctly torque your bolts.
    Thanks.

    It won't hurt anything if you open the cap while you compress the calipers.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 років тому

    Normally as long as you have not topped off the brake fluid as it has gotten lower and lower, you can push the caliper piston back in and not have any issues because the same amount of fluid that was there to start with will be going into the reservoir.

    @airgonz you're probably looking at around 300-400 for parts and labor. Labor rates can vary from shop to shop though.

  • @1AAuto

    @JasperCountyNative It sounds like you have the Teves brake calipers as found on the earlier Jeep Grand Cherokees. The only difference is removing the clip or (wire) on the front of the caliper. Everything else such as collapsing the calipers and removing the pads, should be pretty much the same.

    Note for some US Owners:
    The 3/4" and 11/16" bolts described in the video are actually metric in some cases. On my Son's 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited, the sizes were 18mm and 17mm respectively.
    I foolishly purchased brake parts from another internet location before watching the video, and noticed after the fact, that the parts sold by 1A Auto were considerably less expensive. I will check 1A Auto from now on, I could have saved $55USD.

    This is a great instructional video; however, I think there may be a couple of errors:
    Error #1: @2:08 the technician calls out, "These two bolts are 11/16." On my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, those two bolts are "Grade 10" metric (10mm X 1.25 X 25mm) bolts and have 17mm heads. The 11/16" socket is loose enough to risk head (or socket) damage if the bolt happens to be unusually hard to break free...
    Error #2: @3:45 the technician calls out, "These bolts are 3/4 inch." On my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee, those two bolts are "Grade 10.9" metric (12mm X 1.25 X 35mm) bolts and have 18mm heads. As with the 11/16" socket on the other bolts, a 3/4" socket on these bolts is loose enough to risk head (or socket) damage if the bolt happens to be unusually hard to break free...

    If it's more of a squeek noise you could try to put some anti-squeek lubricant on the back of the brake pad. It's available at your local auto parts store.If it's a whistling noise you may want to check to see that everything has been installed okay.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 років тому

    @aryaan9 You could try to bleed the brakes, and if that doesn't resolve the issue the calipers could be hanging up and freezing, you may want to see if this is what's happening.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 років тому +1

    You shouldn't have to bleed the brakes to change rotors and pads. Remember to pump the brake pedal before you move the vehicle so that the brake pressure comes back. If for some reason they feel really soft or rock hard after you service the brakes, then you could try to bleed them. You shouldn't have to though. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day.

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  12 років тому

    Yes they could. If the brake pedal pulsates up and down when you press them, it's usually the sign of warped rotors. We carry some nice brake rotor and break pad kits online for the 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Here's a link to them on our site. Just copy and paste this into your browser 1aauto.com/1A/BrakePadAndRotorKits/Jeep/GrandCherokee/-/-/1999

    I ALSO first take the cap off the Master Cylinder since the fluid has to go back to the MC or somewhere it will be easier to pry appart the calipar
    LOL if it might splatter overflow wrap a rag around it to soak up overflow

  • @1AAuto
    @1AAuto  11 років тому

    HI De, We didn't have that set up on this Jeep. If you haven't taken apart the other side yet you should be able to refer to it, to see how it goes together. When working on brakes its a good idea to do one side at a time so you can referance the side that's together if you need to. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

    I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, , my question is this? Do you have to bleed out the lines before changind the brake pads, I need to change the front but will be changing the rear pads as well, just because it makes sense to do all 4 tires? Hadnt since I had the vehicle for years now.

    the sizes should be 16 mm and a 17 mm not 11/16 and 3/4 they fit too loose but metric fits tight and use 6 point sockets and wrenches.

  • @CompCrasher86

    The rear brakes on a 99-04 Grand Cherokee should be Teves style disc brakes whereas the front brakes are Akebono style disc brakes. Drums were not available on this model.

    Get the correct tool to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper body and never use the brake pad to push the piston because you take a chance that you may crack the brake pad.

    • @1AAuto

      +lee robinson Thanks for the feedback!

    • @js4512
      @js4512 3 роки тому

      No matter what tool you use they are ALL CLAMPS!!!! Your so called right tool puts pressure on the weakest point of the caliper, the c-clamp puts in the strongest part. anyone who ever broke a caliper will tell you the caliper was seized up in the first place, or they cocked the piston sideways and either broke the piston or caliper....Also, use an old pad when doing new brakes, even though I have NEVER ruined any pads used or new using a c-clamp.
