I was at the beginning of task to replace plugs in my '04 Overland when I decided to watch your video. Had most of the coils & plugs prepped to come out when I noticed #8 (buried on passenger side at firewall) and remembered your video from a while back. Your tip about oil dipstick did the trick. I'll bet the engineers that design engines have big laughs over a few beers together when they talk about us owners struggling to get to some parts out. I find it amazing that you filmed this with one hand! Thanks.
And thank YOU for yohr comment which has led me to more help. Thanks. I am currentky sitting in boise, Idaho with my jeep. It is running like crap. Too scared to coninue on to arizona with it like this.
The fact that yoh had the same issues and this worked gave me hope. I want to go home. So, I need this to be the fix. Ive replaced just about everything. I broke the little clip on the cable that affaches fo the fhrottle body. Made me a new one. I bought this jeep two weeks ago in bend Oregon. I drove to Spokane and was on my way back to Arizona. Stopped in Boise at a rest stop. Upon leaving, I started the jeep and oh my. I didnt mess with it there. I called a tow truck go geg us and dropped us af a hotel. I know nothing (knew I should say) about jeeps. This is one way to learn. Crash course. Hands on. I m a single woman, by myself, traveling, and i do it all the fime, So....i like knowing how to fix MY things. Ya know?
Excellent video. I cleaned my IAC changed the TPS and ignition coil on my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Straight 6 with 125,000 miles and it cured the rough idle and returned my Gas millage to normal. You gave very clear and easy instruction to follow and saved me from a $1,200 tune up and repair bill at Tires Plus. I spent $91.00 at the parts store and about 2 hours learning how to clean and replace the parts. Thanks for the video, the money I saved, and the feeling of satisfaction of fixing something myself =)
Thanks, link375 ! I know this is a 7 year old Video, but it works, Simple and Straight to the point on what to do, Great! Need to replace some Spark Plugs..
Thanks for adding the links, that spark plug socket looks awesome, got to get me a set. I have a misfire in cylinder 3, very rough idle. So I'll be replacing all plugs and coils to be on the safe side, mileage @ 90K.
Thank you SO much for making this video! This has been happening to me on my 99 grand cherokee limited for about 4-5 months and i couldnt figure out what it was. ill definitely be changing my coils and tps. my spark plugs were just changed.
if you're also getting poor gas mileage you may also want to get your first 2 upstream O2 sensors replaced. this was the final nail in the coffin to fix this issue for me.
Thanks for the video, looks like a lot of the other videos are for the I6 model which uses different kind of coil. Also thanks for posting the links to the products on Amazon, very helpful.
Thanks for the video but there was one very important part you missed. When replacing the TPS there is an o-ring you have to replace also. The new TPS should come with a new one. Make sure you put the o-ring on the TPS when you replace it. The TPS I just replaced in my 02 came with a gasket and o-ring. Don't use the gasket, just use the o-ring. It figures I need to replace the both back ones in my jeep. That's a job for another day. Thank you.
If its common knowledge to most its was not to me on how to install a TPS, there is a 50/50 chance on getting it right. Thank you for explaining the TPS installation and showing video because all video until I found your's just say re-install it while the video shows a hand in the way. Thanks again, hope my install fixes the current issue.
I gotta say thanks... i watched your output speed sensor.... when my reader said i had a p0720. .. It works great... and watched your vid once and was not overwhelming at all... Im just in process of spark plugs and TPS. .. only thing is my brake pedal is hissing now... and need to change brake assist. Do you have a video on that?
i wanted to see you pull the no. 8 coil. the wrench barely went on, and the coil looked to be as long as the extension i know it was a pain or trick to get to. do
Very helpful. I have an 02 with horrible gas mileage and I'm %100 positive this will work. Also it's been sitting fir 2 months from overheating and lack of money to get it fixed. I have the money now. What would you recommend?
I got that same rock'n idle but my coil pack is find but damn that spark plug I had was burnt, someone stuck wrong gap size in, it was a .045 instead of a .040 this video was very helpful, I just wonder if bad spark plug can cause the rough idle I don't have a rod thrown
Some said Excellent video...Yes..Only when the camera stopped shaking, and got the V/8 in the frame..did I know this was a waste of time. SO easy to Post...SO hard to know what we talking about !
Hey, I am burning oil (not a bad gasket and I couldn't find anything under the hood, need to get an official diagnosis) and I believe my spark plugs have been fouled due to the burning. The engine light only comes on in cold temperatures and will go off if I restart the car after its warmed up. It will do the bad spark plug shake but not when idling, only when driving at low rpms. I am going to be checking the plugs for fouling but I find it strange that it idles just fine. ALSO, I do not ever get a code on the OBD2, no pending, no active and all monitors look about right other than a very slightly high fuel trim. Dont want to say I'm looking for free mechanic advice... but I kinda am.
I'm no mechanic just a guy that does research on forums and makes easy to follow videos... my suggestions would be to try cleaning the Throttle position sensor, idle air control valve and air intake. You might also want to research the issue on the jeep forums to see if anyone has any other suggestions www.jeepforum.com/forum/
Pretty cool. Very clear and understandable. My jeep has 168000 but idles smooth and gas mileage is about 16 intown and 19 hiway. How can i improve that
Wow 12.6! Thats awesome, mine gets about 10.8... mine is the high output version although I don't know if that makes much of a difference, and like yours has all time 4wd. Worst gas mileage of any car I have ever owned :(
what if while doing this, i dropped my 6 inch metal extension near the 7th plug. is there anywhere it could fall that would be detrimental to the car/engine? i can't find it.
My jeep is bucking, when I am driving it doesn't have the same power it used to have.It doesn't shift as smoothly and it hesitates to get into gear. Can you help me please.
You can retrieve the codes by turning the ignition key Off, On four times in succession. The codes will be appear on the odometer display. You can clear the codes by disconnecting the negative battery terminal for five minutes, or remove the 10A fuse to the ECM.
I notice your temperature gage is not moving, is it cold outside? My 01 JC had the same problem, changed the crankshaft sensor, cleaned the IAC valve (based in your other video), still the same. It seems like the temperature sensor was at fault, changed it and so far so good. No idling.
Did your fuel mileage increase? And what was it? I'm getting close to 10 1/2 per gallon. I have not changed the plugs. The jeep was abandoned for about a year. I've done other work but not replace the plugs. I get that erratic rpm drop every once in a while like maybe once a month. Also I hear a tic tic tic tic sound but not from the engine but from the driver side like in front of the brake fluid reservoir. What is it? Tks for your reply. BTW I bought my 99 WJ limited for 330.00 $ with a set of stud tires included.
Is there much of difference working on a grand cherokee 1999 V6 and the V8? I have the V6 4.0 motor version of the 1999 grand cherokee and I'm planning to tune it up thanks
i did my spark plugs a while back and i couldnt get the furthest 2 in the back out not enough leverage idk if you need a puller or not you seemed to pop em right out pretty easy
You talking about the coils or spark plugs? The coils are stuck to the ceramic on the plugs. Wiggle them and pull up, the will come out. This happened to my #1 cylinder. The 'pros' at the garage didn't apply silicone grease to the boot, four years earlier. Always apply a dab of grease to the inside of the coil boot.
Gas hog and the transfer case sounds like you got a blower under the hood. I have 280,000 on my 2001. It's all original except the engine which I had done at Jeep with 178,000. Oh, the transmission was replaced 2008, 102,000 started slipping but it's been solid since. I have a limited so I had to re-wire the drivers door. Even the coolant level sensor still works. A/C blows pretty cold too. Original Infinity Amp still there but it's got a new deck. Did you get a V-8?
Nope this one was a lemon, it had so many problems, when the transmission problems started I got rid of it asap. I got another Grand cherokee 2007 V8 which is running a lot better and with way less problems.
maybe i need to do this to my jeep because it needs a new o2 sensor it idles rough and my gas smells unburned but im not that good at diagnosing things on my car but as of right now it gets 9 miles to a gallon
Why would you use ngk? Champion is closest to oe. Ngk is most commonly for foreign cars. Champion for chrysler , motorcaft for ford, acdelco for just about anything, and if you want to amp your engine up use bosch, polstar, accel. Anything but Ngk for a v8. With the exception of the laser platinum racing plugs.
Thank you very much. My light came on and told me it was cylinder #5. I took a flashlight out to the car and...... could not find the spark plugs. Heck I could not even find the distributor cap or wires. MAN I FEEL OLD. Now I know where they are hiding everything. Thanks again.
I had a misfire on cylinder 2 and 3.. I replaced my spark plugs.. all 6, and it was fine and started back up an hour later.. My car stopped keeping fire.. It would turn over and then stop after a sec of a catch. Im trying to replace my coil pack, but its not seperate its one whole unit. Broke the damn clip.. cant get it to come out.. HELP plz..
I just replaced the spark plugs and coil on my '01 Jeep Grand Cherokee . (4.0 inline 6 motor ) still runs like shit and stalls out. Next I'm going to try replacing the fuel injectors and fuel filter.

Why did you just target the four corners of the V8 to change the coil packs on? I think you said you got one P0301, which would be the #1 plug/coil but why the other 3 corners? Thanks in advance, good video, get a helper for the camera next time and you could fly through the repair! Good job with one hand tho… talent! Clay
Guy likes blowing money on unneeded parts. The TPS and O2 have nothing to do with his problem. I had the same issue five years ago and just replaced the #1 plug and coil. Recently had a P0303 and replaced all the plugs because the previous owner had replaced the #3 plug with a standard copper plug, the other seven were Bosch Double Platinums. A week four days later got P0355, replaced the coil with the #7 cylinder coil(it showed a little heat discoloration. and put a new Denso coil in #7. It gets a little hotter in the back the engine near the firewall. At 220K I'm splurging and am going to replace the other seven coils. Found OEM Denso coils online for $16.99 each, half the price NAPA is charging.
link375 actually no, mine is the 4.7 HO, I use titanium tip plugs for better spark, but you must be in the States, here in Canada car parts are a lot more expensive, that's why I usually buy my parts south of the border, about 55-60% cheaper
I just have to know....cuz it's been killing me....how long did you drive around with the rag sitting on the battery?? Lol...bet that woulda caused a brown stain in the ol pants if it'd gotten sucked down into the belt on the road.
lol for a while I figured it wouldn't fall due to pressure from the hood, I only put it there because I had to make my own battery holder and my battery was sitting up a little too high and sometimes it would touch the hood and short
just to say on the 4.7 HO (not in the standard 4.7 in this video nor the 4.0 which can use many plug cros - variations) '; wjjeeps.com/service/sparkplugs.htm strongly insist the factory plug or the single champion cross-ref 3340 (much cheaper) ---that wrong plug could result in serious engine damage on HO. Just thought i would throw it out there. no reason to risk it and they are not that expensive
Search terms! If I had seen V8 in the title. I wouldn't have wasted my time with the video. I had to watch the video and recognize the motor to be a V8 to know that.
Throwing parts at a problem willy-nilly, not a good idea. Better off replacing the coils in the back, it's hotter in the rear of the engine. Dollar plugs! Talk about cheaping out, but getting overpriced Mopar coils and TPS, Crown O2 sensor! Dude you have no clue, should have gotten the Denso OEM. The rough idle could be caused by a dirty throttle body butterfly plate. Good time to clean it with the air box removed. Get locking extensions for the sparkplug socket.
Very helpful. I have an 02 with horrible gas mileage and I'm %100 positive this will work. Also it's been sitting fir 2 months from overheating and lack of money to get it fixed. I have the money now. What would you recommend?
if it's overheating I would suggest you check the thermostat, and make sure there are no coolant leaks, also make sure the radiator is working properly

Burnt plugs are caused by pre-ignition in the cylinders because of carbon build up on the valves. Get some Techron fuel treatment.

Found OEM Denso coils online for $16.99 each, half the price NAPA is charging.
a dollar for a spark plug, I have the 4.7 ho, my plugs are 11 dollars each
then you got ripped off...
link375 actually no, mine is the 4.7 HO, I use titanium tip plugs for better spark, but you must be in the States, here in Canada car parts are a lot more expensive, that's why I usually buy my parts south of the border, about 55-60% cheaper
David Vidal titanium? I have 4.7ho I thought it was platinum tips?
I don't see a follow up video that says all you really needed to do was replace the O2 sensor..
How was your gas mileage after the repairs were made?
I have had 16 - 17 mpg around town.
I had the same problem i changed the air position sensor and it was good to GO!
What is an air position sensor?
my doesnt crank over it just spinnning
just to say on the 4.7 HO (not in the standard 4.7 in this video nor the 4.0 which can use many plug cros - variations) ';
wjjeeps.com/service/sparkplugs.htm strongly insist the factory plug or the single champion cross-ref 3340 (much cheaper) ---that wrong plug could result in serious engine damage on HO. Just thought i would throw it out there. no reason to risk it and they are not that expensive
should also share that this is a V8 and NOT a straight 6...
"99 - 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8"
It is clearly shown in the video to be a V8...wow
Search terms! If I had seen V8 in the title. I wouldn't have wasted my time with the video. I had to watch the video and recognize the motor to be a V8 to know that.
Wow. The thumbnail clearly shows a V8.
Sorry you had to watch it several times to figure it out....LMAO
Now that I know how to change the coils... I just need to figure out which one is cylinder 2~

Yeah I found it
You have no business working on your vehicle, if you don't grasp this basic knowledge.
the link for the coil is for six cylinder engine
EDIT OUT THE POLLUTION SCENES..THE TAIL PIPE BLOWIN' SMOKE...
dude, there is snow on the ground, it is probably cold as hell there, that is water vapor most likely
What would you recommend?
if it's overheating I would suggest you check the thermostat, and make sure there are no coolant leaks, also make sure the radiator is working properly
might try a coolant flush… plenty of video’s here on UA-cam
Very nicely done!!
thanks for the video . very helpful,
Thanks for the video!
