MLK accomplished so much at such a young age. His speeches are so moving. We definitely still have a long way to go.. it's a shame we don't have him now. Great video Simon!
I really hope the stuff in the FBI file were untrue. If he had extramarital affairs that’s one thing but that one account is bizarre to say the least. MLK is an Icon and a part of me doesn’t want that tarnished.
I know there’s a chance this may unfortunately be true. But I’m inclined to believe that they released what best fit their agenda, especially thinking about the recent BLM movement. People already don’t want to listen to black voices, so it’s a huge blow when one of the most influential and trusted figures in their fight for justice is suddenly made suspect. And this wouldn’t be the first time the FBI has made activists out to be monsters.
I go with the assumption that most people are assholes. Then if I discover they're decent I can be pleasantly surprised. Plenty of "good" people in history and present have bad parts too. Example I love the actor Gary Cooper. He typically played the "good guy" in movies. He cheated on his wife for years and when he got his mistress pregnant made her get an abortion. Still love his movies, but I accept he was very flawed on his personal life.
Maybe you should rethink your "hero worship" if you cannot accept they are human, and make mistakes. For example: I detest Ghandi, but respect how he accomplished his goal.
One thing people should not forget that he was also starting a poor people's campaign he was seeking for things like health care for all and the minum wage to be raised. At the time of his death about 40% of people thought that he deserved it.
Can you do a video on John Lewis? He march with King across the Edmund Pettus Bridge as a young man, was beaten and arrested, then grew to become the conscious of the House. He was an amazing man.
Yeah, do a video during "Black History Month" so people don't have to think about it for the rest of the year, right? I fucking hate all this "month" crap for just that reason...
Everyone remembers him for his civil rights, though I admire and remember him for his worker rights, and education on the wealth gap within America ( he was gunned down while at a worker/union protest.)
I have a dream is one of the greatest speeches by MLK. Even Edgar Hoover, director of FBI's predecessor tried to frame him with sexual assault charges, but he came out clean.
"We have deluded ourselves into believing that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor-both black and white, here and abroad." -Martin Luther King Jr.
@@Dominknows He was a socialist but he wasn't exactly a communist. Although he was staunchly anti-capitalist, he disagreed with the Atheist nature of Marxism among other things. In his words, "In short, I read Marx as I read all of the influential historical thinkers-from a dialectical point of view, combining a partial yes and a partial no. Insofar as Marx posited a metaphysical materialism, and ethical relativism, and a strangulation totalitarianism, I responded with an unambiguous no; but insofar as he pointed to the weakness of traditional capitalism, contributed to the growth of a definite self-conscience of the Christian churches, I responded with a definite yes."

YES!!! I’ve been waiting for MLK’s biography since so long. Searched it up on other channels too but Mr. Simon just hits different. Going to save this in my watch later as my treat for after I’m done with my homework :D
There are people who say that America is in decline. That today empty pop music, pessimism, bad fashion, and political division are what defines this country. As I see it, this man was a defining part of the era of America as cultural superpower. There were the Moon Landings, and there was Martin Luther King, and they go hand in hand equal in greatness. The greatness of this civilization came as much from cultural vitality as from military victory in World War II.
To this day his speeches make the hairs on my arms rise and my heart swell... and even knowing about his marital indiscretions, I think of all the good works he had done. And think "many other great men of history haven't been husbands"... But this was the first time I heard that MLK was in the presence of a rape, allowed and/or encouraged such actions against a rape victim, it left me agape and not wanting to wait until 2027. I need to know now, or I don't ever want to know... I am sincerely sorry for what happened to any and all victims, but I've lost so many heroes that kept me inspired throughout my youth in Chicago, I hate to lose 1 more, one whose words and recounting of his life, allowed me to gain the friendship of so many black people. I rather not know his sins. I rather prefer to be ignorant and be apologetic for not knowing. I guess I am older than I thought. No matter. I still think MLK was and is a great American hero ⚖
People are complicated -- sadly many brilliant minds also can be cruel and deviant. Look at how many artists, musicians, actors, directors, etc. are brilliant at their art, but are really horrible people, or at least people who did horrible things. I generally like to separate the art from the artist.
Um. I don't want to take away from the horrible actions this alleged action is. But even if so, does this take back all the good he did? And all the inspiration he caused? I don't think so. People change and are complicated. Yes. It's bad. Sure, he like so many other men, white and black, Asian and Latin, cheat on their girlfriends and or wives. That doesn't bother me as much. The rape thing is shitty but he still did good
@@delfin7461 that's the best way to do it. Never put a man or woman on a pedestal because they will fall. Falling is how we learn in most cases so you have to expect the fall. The best thing to do is to look at the work that people do. Martin looks to have had numerous affairs outside of his marriage and it is not above reasoning that he may have been in the company of sexual deviants from time to time. Once those tapes are released in 2027, if those allegations are true, then it will be a hell of a blow on the legacy of a great man. As for the victim of the rape itself, I wonder why she never spoke up? Did something happen to her? And does she take some solace in the fact that King was assassinated even though he was not the one that actually assaulted her.

martin luther king was a socialist.... some of his best speaches were socialist in nature in his later days he preached economic socialism, while he wasnt a communist or markist.
That's b/c he was economic illiterate which is understandable b/c people don't see the unseen as Frederic Bastiat put it. King used to get into it with AG Gaston, a self made multi-millionaire, who basically bankrolled the civil rights movement in B'ham.
@@JK-gu3tl I'm going to have to strongly disagree there, Frederic Bastiat was a nut, who's economic philosophy has only helped furthered inequality and poverty around the world.
@@tenaciousgamer6892 Wut? Liberalization of economies in the 19th century helped reduced poverty significantly in places like USA and Europe. He's far better than Karl Marx, that's for sure.
@@JK-gu3tl No it was industry and technology that did, and only really in the cities the general poverty rates stayed about equal. There was only a increase in wealth with in cities. Even then the data isn't particularly reliable. Even modern calculations exclude people who haven't held a job in many years. So modern rates of poverty are much higher then many governments want to acknowledge. Karl marx how much do you understand about what economics he wanted humanity to achieve ? Because I can tell you its not anything like what you saw in any communist country or fascist regime. No what he wanted was democratizing work places, workers elect their own leaders with in a company and vote on working standards. I am not a fan of our little kingdoms that we call corporations and conglomerates, just like fascist governments they are bound to fail and the people under them suffer the most from the fall out not the CEOs.

She was telling me what they did to her and everyone else that was living there went completely against what King wanted.

Just a personal guess, but I would say that probably some would be right on the front lines, more energized & legendary than ever before - whilst others would have made a full turn in the other direction, fallen from grace for using one struggle's platform to oppose another's, or become disenchanted & given up all hope. This is not to say anything about the character of individual activists, nor the nature of the movement, but is rather my observation on human nature: that we all change as we age, & that different people change in different ways.

People already don’t want to listen to black voices, so it’s a huge blow when one of the most influential and trusted figures in their fight for justice is suddenly made suspect. And this wouldn’t be the first time the FBI has made activists out to be monsters.
I get that, Hoover was mad with power but damn. A lot of icons have a complicated history women.
We can hope that we can "split the man from his work"...but since this coming from the FBI 🤨🤔
Long overdue for this channel. Thanks BTW
MLK is my hero he’s not perfect but I love it
One thing people should not forget that he was also starting a poor people's campaign he was seeking for things like health care for all and the minum wage to be raised. At the time of his death about 40% of people thought that he deserved it.
Yeah, it speaks volumes to the political climate of the US how much that side of him has been pushed to the side and covered up.
Can you do a video on John Lewis? He march with King across the Edmund Pettus Bridge as a young man, was beaten and arrested, then grew to become the conscious of the House. He was an amazing man.
Excellent job to you and your staff Simon. Over 50 years later and you provided information I never knew
I suggested this subject a while back. Thank you for finally presenting it.🤗
This would’ve really helped 4 months ago :(.
Good luck to anyone else doing the civil rights movement!
His speeches still gives me goosebumps!
I made sure my kids listened to the whole thing.
When we see pictures of George Floyd ✊
Thank you for all these great, well-researched documentaries! I have enjoyed learning so much!
This came at a perfect time just watched one of his interviews yesterday.
I have a dream is one of the greatest speeches by MLK. Even Edgar Hoover, director of FBI's predecessor tried to frame him with sexual assault charges, but he came out clean.
Really mr supreme leader?
He didn't come out clean. And he didn't write that speech. Google it. He plagiarized. Like he did in college
"We have deluded ourselves into believing that capitalism grew and prospered out of the Protestant ethic of hard work and sacrifice. The fact is that capitalism was built on the exploitation and suffering of black slaves and continues to thrive on the exploitation of the poor-both black and white, here and abroad."
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Fitting words from a communist
@@Dominknows He was a socialist but he wasn't exactly a communist. Although he was staunchly anti-capitalist, he disagreed with the Atheist nature of Marxism among other things. In his words,
"In short, I read Marx as I read all of the influential historical thinkers-from a dialectical point of view, combining a partial yes and a partial no.

So absurd to see how awful things were even less than seventy years ago. Still much progress to be done.
Stop teaching CRT then. It's the exact opposite of his dream.

YES!!! I’ve been waiting for MLK’s biography since so long. Searched it up on other channels too but Mr. Simon just hits different. Going to save this in my watch later as my treat for after I’m done with my homework :D
Beautiful and informative as always Simon ❤️
Thanks for this Simon! I was surprised by just how many things I didn't know about MLK.
Please do one on his predecessor: Vernon Johns. Thank you.
You should do a biographic on John Mcafee. He’s lived a pretty wild and crazy life
There are people who say that America is in decline.
@@tyrfree5733 How do you know she didn't speak up? People are not always believed.

Can you do a video on Ataturk and his drive to secularize Turkey?
Yes please
YES that would be awesome. Mustafa Ataturk is such an underrated historical figure - at least to countries outside of Turkey - yet, he was easily one of the greatest leaders in history. Definitely one of my favorite historical figures along with Napoleon and Caesar.
The wait for 2027 might be more frustrating than waiting for Cyberpunk's release now.
He plagiarized the dream speech. We already know his character. We also know for sure he had many affairs and used his power to get women into bed. The rape tapes is the only unsure thing. Probably true.
martin luther king was a socialist.... some of his best speaches were socialist in nature in his later days he preached economic socialism, while he wasnt a communist or markist.
Yeah, it speaks volumes to the political climate of the US, how much that side of him was pushed to the side and covered up.

I have already added him. We should also remove the statues.

I found out not long ago that Izola Curry at one point did time at the Matteawan State Hospital for the Criminally Insane located in Fishkill, NY, not far from me! It's a small world after all. Today, it's Fishkill Correctional Facility, but the buildings that made up Matteawan are still standing. You can see it as you drive by I-84! Could you at some time cover J. Paul Getty? Christopher Plummer really hit a home run with his portrayal of him in "All the Money in the World." I didn't know until after he passed away that he won an Oscar for best supporting actor for that role! What a testament to his talent! Also, the crew had to reshoot all scenes that originally had Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer in the month before the movie's theatrical release! That is one of the most appropriately named movies I've seen. He, LITERALLY had all the money in the world being the world's richest person in 1973. He FIGURATIVELY had all the money in the world to get his grandson freed. The movie's title also provides us with a PROFOUND message: All the money in the world can NOT buy you happiness.

Perfect time to put this out.
I would be curious to see what some of the civil rights icons of the 60s like MLK think about everything that is happening today in the U.S.
