I use this wine key: Laguiole en Aubrac Wine Key Ebony
I have used this glass in this Video: Riedel Veritas Riesling
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
Lustau Almacenista Manzanilla Pasada de Sanlúcar
I have finished the new Apple TV Wine show The Drops of God, and while I did like the first two episodes I also noticed quite a few weird and wrong information in the third episode. So today, I want to sit back and watch those parts with you to explain what they got wrong to make sure you get to learn something.
If you did not watch the first part of this review: The show is based on the manga The Drops of God which was first published in 2004 and it attracted a large following. So large, that the wines integrated into the comic sold out quickly after a new comic was released. In the TV adaptation, Camille Leger has to battle wine expert Issei Tomine in different tasting tasks for her father’s wine collection worth 148 million Dollars.

My wife and I were having a quiet evening watching this and when they said Vega Sicilia and Cheval Blanc were made with the same varietal...I burst out "WTF are you talking about"...I said..."how hard is it for the producers to Google it!?"

Me and my wife reacted almost the exact same way. To be fair we only ever blind tasted the Valbuena which has Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended with mostly Tempranillo, and despite some similarities in the "encépagement", it has absolutely nothing to do with anything close to Saint-Émilion, let alone the best from this region. We had the chance to taste 6 vintages of Château Cheval Blanc, including the 2000 which is in the top ten absolute best wine I've ever tasted. To be fair to Issey, this wine marked me so deeply that I would probably be able to identify it, obviously not against a 1999, but I sure would recognize this nectar of the gods. The only other wines I would be able to do so is Mouton Rothschild 1989 and 2005 and Haut-Brion 2000. Anyway, this series is great nonetheless, despite the flaws that only very sharply aware people like us are irritated by, do you agree? Just like you I just don't get why they did not push their researches further than this. This series would have been a masterpiece if the director/producer had very good knowledge about wine.

It's good to remember this is based on a manga, which historically utilize very heightened, histrionic presentation. Whether talking about superpowers, demons, or yes, food and wine, most dialogue is shouted, every prop is displayed like the holy grail, "action" is more over the top than American comic books. The pretentiousness of wine is a perfect match to this style, and the manga is at least somewhat self-aware of this and and uses it as satire as much as seriousness. The TV show is an odd mish-mash of the manga's energy and the more straight forward style of western dramas. It works okay, but I hope they can lean more into the silliness in the future, as the manga does.

Interesting take, but remember that the series is *NOT* a documentary. It is a fiction based on a comic strip. And like every fictional work, it needs make the narrative tighter, condense the timelines, add drama, and use some well worn theater techniques like repetition and cliff hangers to keep the viewer interested. I personally loved the show and recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the magic of wine. (PS: I work in a wine store)

Last video you talked about this series, I then decided to subscribe to Apple TV+ and give it a chance. I'm now halfway through it and I honestly absolutely love it. There is obviously a couple of far-fetched scenes like Issey being able to find an exact cuvée by the nose in 30 seconds, but overall it's extremely good. Thanks for recommending!

I really enjoyed this series - great acting, beautiful visuals and solid storytelling. But still, my favourite wine drama is Sideways, which also has great storytelling and acting, but has a lot of humor too. It's super serious about wine, but makes fun of wine nerdiness as well. It's pretty hilarious how it tanked the sales of merlot in the US (that must've hurt some winemakers though, i assume...), but still, "I'm not drinking f'n merlot", continues to be a running gag in our house.

The French series Sang de la Vigne (Blood of the Vine) is a lot of fun. It's about a brilliant enologist, who is also an amateur sleuth, who uses his palate and knowledge to solve wine-related murder mysteries.

In the manga the first wine was a Henri jayer (cros parantoux) if I remember correctly and the same event took place with serving a customer in a high end restaurant so they decided to taste another Cros parantoux but from Emmanuel Roumier, Jayer's nephew and protégé. It made a bit more sense than in the show, in my opinion. Also, the cinematics about the main character tasting and discovering a wine with all senses is a superb idea from the mangaka and was one of the best elements of the Manga. I will probably watch this show eventually but I'm expecting to be disappointed, I'm afraid. Thanks for an enjoyable review 😊

Lignage was an actual varietal grown in the Loire, but died off due to those awful vine pests. However, that’s not my point. Lignage tasting notes, as described in the video, is way off how a Loire red grape similar to PN or Gamay should taste.
I believe the producer actually wanted to use a different wine but did not get approval from the winery. That wine would be Liber Pater-the most expensive wine in the world and grown in Bordeaux. Liber is made from ungrafted vines grown in Graves. My opinion.

As there are so many movies/shows about wines mentioned here, I also have to shout out my personal favourite: Back to burgundy / Der Wein und der Wind / Ce qui nous lie.
To me, this movie shows wine, its vinification and the people making him in a more realistic and yet also entertaining kind of enjoyment. It's more of a pinot noir who has to tell you something, but doesn't urge for it. It also digs a little bit into the complicated heritage system in burgundy.

Thanks for clarifying so many points that I found odd - to say the least - watching this episode. I have the feeling the manga is actually a lot more accurate on so many aspects than the show.
Just a remark about them focusing only on the flavors, rather than taking into consideration the tasting of the wine: in episode 2, Camille cannot drink the wine, so she has to rely 100% on the smell.
Well a master of wine like you can maybe not identify 100% of wines just by smelling them, but obviously Issei Tomine can 🤣

I am a classically trained musician, conductor, educator- those of us in the industry feel similarly when we see movies and series that portray musicians and conductors in unrealistic ways. Simply Google, "how to hold a trumpet", "how to conduct a down beat", "what types of things would one say in a rehearsal?", etc.

True. These days they just assume people are stupid. Which, unfortunately, this is typically true for a lot of people in our society. A couple things I'd hoped you'd have discussed with the restaurant scene: The bottle on the table when opening has always been a no-no for me. Keep it off the table while uncorking unless you're using a service cart or guéridon. Also when there is wine left in the bottle and both men have empty glasses, that's a big somm fail. If there was still wine, the guests should never have been allowed to run their glass dry. Loved hearing another Somm's take on this series! Cheers!

Androstenone is highly concentrated in boars saliva. When the boar sneezes at a sow in heat, she a stands still for mating. It seems that over a century ago, Hollywood decided that their target audience was... not experts. Whether you're an expert on wine, art, history cars, computers, finance, sports, what have you, if you have some expertise on the subject and the subject is prominently featured in the movie, you will have a long list of complaints about things which are ridiculously wrong and would have been very easy to get right. Gladiator drives me, and others with some knowledge of ancient Rome, absolutely crazy, and all the more so since the general public hailed it for its "historical accuracy," but the target audience was... not us.

It’s difficult to willfully suspend disbelief in such cases. I can’t watch the usual legal procedurals the same way others can. I’m glad I don’t know much about wine (though inspired to learn more)! Finally started watching it. I'm 4 episodes in so far. I agree that without tasting you can't know for sure what a wine is. No mention of oak or structure, or even color. Yeah, there are some "legendary" tasters that supposedly could identify a wine from smell alone, but no. With that said, just based on the aromas I was confident it was a Cab family based wine. I mostly ignored the celery root, but I knew we were talking Cab family. I could even see someone use celery root for a Cab Franc. But I also kept saying it had to also include Merlot based on what little information they told us. This as before we were given specific wines to choose from.
So I was at least convinced Bordeaux and probably Right Bank. Then the Vega Sicilia thing? Yeah, a total WTF? So then using all those "hints" I came up with the only possibility given the choices - Cheval Blanc. For no particular reason I went with late 90s. I was going for 97-98. I mean it's a total guessing game at that point when you can't actually do the tasting, but it was fun to use my theory. But at the end of the day it's "Hollywood." ;)

Yeah that idea that one can identify a wine down to label and vintage based on taste descriptions alone is very silly. I mean if you read the description of five top wine critics rating the same wine I’d bet they’d all be quite different. Also my experience is that the same wine from the same vintage can taste quite different from one bottle to the another, especially after some time. Also depending on the mood and condition of the taster.

Favorite wine tv has to be Oz and James in California. They were the Laurel and Hardy of wine. All three seasons are hilarious and quite informative by the way.

Wanted to ask this and this seems as good a video to ask it on as any. One part of the video talks about the proper way to cut the capsule. I get that this is part of the show of opening wine and I always used to cut it or cut it off completely. Lately I've noticed that for 95% of bottles you can just grip it and give it a twist and pull and it comes right off completely. It's quicker, cleaner, and you can see the whole cork before you open it. Thoughts?

I never used the cutter the way your suppose to with the thumb like ringing around the bottle. I used to like hold it like I was trying to slash a ducks throat. Going for that Foie gras. I almost cut my finger doing it and finally tried it that way and it seems A LOT. safer. lol.

If only the question of the day had been "Which do you prefer: Cheval Blanc or Vega Sicilia Unico?" I can´t imagine you´d need much of either to identify each but to get to a preference would be some seriously enjoyable drinking!

That was more a "Whomp, whomp!" moment. 😞 Apple TV has a lot of catching up to do with Netflix in where The Queen's Gambit was applauded for its accuracy to the game of chess, but The Drops of God seems to miss the most obvious mistakes in terms of tasting wines.

I just finished Drops of God and a mixed reaction. As there was plenty of drama, intrigue and suspense in the characters lives, past and present. As to the wine aspect some parts were very cool, like describing the flavors and highlighting small boutique & artisanal family wineries over the big chateaus and big brands.
But other parts were very inaccurate and ridiculous, anyone with Google could have found the answers they needed to make the show more factual. In the credits there was an wine expert mentioned, but either his opinions weren't listened to or he did a very shoddy job.
Even though it's not strictly a wine movie, French Kiss touched on the ability to smell & taste wine, which was pretty cool. A Good Year was also enjoyable, though the novel was far better. Bottle Shock had so many inaccuracies and misrepresented Steven Spurrier, though it was somewhat fun. The documentaries A Year in Burgundy and a Year in Champagne, while documentaries were both entertaining and educational. Thanks for this analysis and breakdown; let's see if there is a season 2.

I rarely watch TV but both my wife and I enjoyed this show even though it’s a bit silly and there is a lot of cliché when it comes to French culture. I thought the Japanese guy should have won as he was the only principal character who had honour.

Appreciate your review! After reading the manga series tho I kinda hate how they whitewashed half the characters and didn’t address how elitist and inaccessible the “world of wine” is to the rest of the literal world. My takeaway from the book is that wine is a substance that connects us to the earth, memories, and other people - regardless of the price. The show gets at this a little but would really have appreciated a full Japanese POV on this topic rather than France hogging the “winelight” LOL

I've seen a number of episodes. It starts out with a distinct premise that shows some promise. I was hoping for a tight script that would tackle said premise in various creative and entertaining ways, but instead it quickly peters out into an inert, almost soapy thing that's a dime a dozen.
