Always nice to see that connection between Beaucastel and Tablas Creek. And great to hear that Sandlands made an appearance. Tegan sources much of his fruit from his own Kirschenmann Vineyard near our winery in the hamlet of Victor outside Lodi. Cheers!
Loved the show. Watched it my parents who know very little about wine. They were totally enthralled and led to a lot of great conversations about wine. Thanks for this video, the show was wonderful and highly recommend it.
The TV series Drops of Gods unfortunately has a few pretty bad (basic) mistakes in a later episode (Vega Sicilia Unico and Cheval Blanc having the same grapes!? Nope. The only two wines in the world smelling like truflle!? Nope). The blind tasting in E1 is also completely unrealistic. Issei only sniffs the wine shortly (the LePuy), then identifies it down to the correct vintage etc., this scene was also pointed out in the video by Matthew. Bogus, almost nobody is able to do that - not even a seasoned Master of Wine (especially without at least even tasting the wine first). The original manga is much more realistic AND uses real wines (with beautiful label recreated in black and white). For anyone interested: The manga is available (as of mid-2023) for free with a Kindle Unlimited subscription. You will need some time to finish it - the series consists of 44 comic book volumes. It's absolutely worth it in my opinion. PS: I'm not saying that the TV show is bad. It's a good drama. It's just a pity that they made these mistakes given the huge production budget and oenology advisors mentioned in the credits.
Totally agree, that whole Vega Sicilia thing confused the heck out of me. There are some wonderful MW tasters but I have tasted with a lot of other great (even better) tasters from all walks of the industry... Anyone in working in wine knows that just smelling a wine and call out the EXACT wine and vintage is near impossible.
I had a great time watching this series, as did most wine geeks and aficionados. In the opening scenes when they were showing the winery I was guessing, "Provence or the southern Rhone"? And it was CDP, so pretty close, ha! There were many things that I enjoyed, the complicated family dynamics and interpersonal conflict and tension. And of course the wine, although it was quite unrealistic; but we have to remember this is a manga inspired TV series, not a wine competition or documentary. Konstantin Baum brought out this point and I agree with him; that there was an over emphasis on only taste & flavor. While ignoring key elements of wine: tannins, structure, acidity, balance, intensity, complexity, etc. I sometimes don't understand why TV series and films make up fake wines/wineries; a prime example being "Scandal" with Kerry Washington and there are many more. I mean if one of the longest running film franchises, James Bond, can use First Growth Bordeaux and prestige cuvee Champagne, why make up something that's not true?! Though I did like the aspect of ignoring the famous and prestigious wines in favor of small boutique/family producers making authentic drinkable and affordable wine. All in all a fun & entertaining series, if you can take it with a few grains of salt, ha! 😄
Wow! Château de Beaucastel is on my bucket list. I have never visited them, even though I like their wines. Cheers to absolutely amazing experience you had there 🙌🏻🍷
I’ve seen the series and fell in love with Tomohisa Yamashita in the process. The series are beatifully shot, but I was a bit angry with how unrealistic some of the tasting scenes are. Now I will definitely read the manga. Thank you for the video, Matthew!
I loved how they tried to make this show like how they would try to make wine. ‘Balanced’ , it was. Not much hyperbole, just good enough. Also, finish was great.
My counterquestion would be: Who hasn't seen the series ? ;) I love the series, and I have a few of their wines aswell, like the jacobins and the le puy. Lovely wines, btw.
@@drmatthewhorkey especially the le puy is a big favorite of mine. I haven't seen many reviews about this wine on youtube btw. perhaps something for your channel ?
I love the series. Great story, great actors. If someone dosent love wine afterward i dont know!! Also it feels like real if it comes to the wine stuff even its clear that a lot of unreal stuff happening. i have to go to trento its only 3.5 hours away!
As promised…

Ahh I figured you know Tegan... I love hearing him speak on old vineyards.

Ahhhh same here! My family was really interested even though they know nothing about wine.

It was fun indeed. The subtle mistakes are weird, especially considering the budget and all the work that went into it.

I bet you’ll be there in the near future!
It looks beautiful, I am planning a visit for next year

Ahhh thanks!! Yes the abilities of the tasters were quite sensationalized. Production though… A+++++

Hhhahaahha well said

Wow! Thanks for enlightening us 🤩🍷
I love Beaucastel and I really enjoyed DoG❣️
I bet you loved it!
Waaaaay cool ! Perrin family is legendary ! Strange to have a movie set in the winery itself...
It was a hectic scene when I visited.
Had a Sandland 2020 Red Table Wine about a month ago. It was much more than a table wine.
Far from a table wine hahaha
Nikoladze drop is crazy 😅
I was SHOCKED too when watching
Ahhhh I really liked the drops of God manga, can't wait for this!
