This IS what we have been waiting for. Rain that forces you to adjust the driving to the conditions. Not just more slippery and visually more difficult. Actual physics to take into account. WORTH THE WAIT so that they could get it correct.
I did many laps on nord in real life and honestly, full wet ist most fun. Yes, first it´s code brown until u know how ur car and tires are doing. So start it from the very slow side or ur dead by understeering into the barriers. Ppl say it takes balls of steel to drive a wet Nord. I don´t think so. It takes "intelligent" driving and NO ego to break lap records. One great benefit with wet Nord: Ur almost alone on track and speed differences are less. Everybody knows it´s dangerous, so everybody is extra careful. That car in my avatar is my Vette C7 Z06.
This is without a doubt the best update ever in the 12+ years I have been on the service. I just did the same race and it was so challenging and enjoyable! It was hard to talk during the race honestly.
Just had my first test session in the rain! Unbelievably good - so realistic and you can feel the grip coming and going. Being fortunate enough to have an active pedal for the brakes I am struggling to work out how they could have done this any better. Fantastic work from the iRacing teams.
Feel a bit sorry for Jim. Like the damage reports recently added, it looks like weather calls are not going to be made available to 3rd party apps either. I think iRacing have decided that Jim needs to retire.
The rain is amazing fun. Mostly been doing laps in the FF1600 which has no ABS or TC so no need to worry about if it's on or off, lol. Puddles are a true obstacle. Taking the FF1600 around a wet Summit Point is incredible.
I tested my skills on this track in the rain and found I am going to need to do some really serious practice in the rain. As for the quality of simulation, I certainly think iRacing has got it right. I also found that the Frame Rate was hardly different, so that was one fear sorted. As for the Safety Rating, it will be interesting to see how others treat the conditions. All in all another good addition to the sim. Also Dave you had traction control off so well done.
I only have to correct you on one thing: ACC has actually a great rain system where track develops a lot and puddles are a big threat, you also have streams of water. Dont really know how to compare them but feels great here too after trying both gt3 and gr86 and felt confident pretty quickly Great video as always sir! Tc off to show who the real OG is 😅
ACC has been doing standing water for a while now, and it's great. The only gripe I have with it is that the optimal wet line is very much the same as the optimal dry line. There is no disadvantage in ACC to taking the normal racing line, except where the puddles actually form on track. I feel iRacing have gone above and beyond with this update, which is brilliant. And I may also be a little jealous, as I'm an ACC enthusiast haha
Yeah, you're absolutely right on that, you have more disadvantages to go out of racing line then stayin in it. And on that part iRacing is better, no doubts. I'm really curious to try a dump track with dry tyres to feel how it behaves, and how tyres responds.
I’ve been watching your content since the start of season 1 this year and I gotta say it’s really great man. I don’t normally leave comments but in this case I thought I had to say good job. 👍
Geez, you're a good man in a tight spot - great adapting and cool headedness! God that rain looks real, first time I've had real fomo pangs for iRacing... this might actually pull me off the console. Keep on keepin up!
Well that was a tough one Dave. Luckily I am a slow steady old soul, so I hope to have an advantage over the speed merchants. I had a little play at Daytona in the Ferrari and I can tell you that Dry tyres have no grip at all in the wet! 🤣 Keep it up. 👍
My situation is similar to yours, and I can confirm that rain certainly levels the playing field. I have very little experience in prototypes (LMP2), but still managed to win overall at Le Mans. Best of luck to you - the rain has actually given us half a chance to win! 😊 🏆
I’m not super fast either. I usually have consistent lap times though. I think rain could be the equalizer for us… as long as no one slides into the back of us. 😂
Dave,. Thank you for showing alot of class and not dropping the full JC. You have a lifetime subscriber with me sir. And of course thank you for this romp in the rain. Great content as always...
Best looking rain physics I think. I do remember Project Cars2 having great wet weather. The puddles had you aquaplaning and being dragged into them but I don’t remember if the conventional line had less grip. Still. Wet racing is excellent. Well done!
Good grief. Drives like ice. Love to see this a COTA. I watched the live NASCAR race in the rain last year. That was torture but the fans actually loved it.
Great Job Dave. I had been looking forward to this. Try doing a race in a car without ABS and TC, my first test was in the F4 at Monza and I couldn't stop in time for the first chicane. As Ollie said the other day, no-one is going to want to race in the dry during the day anymore.
I've only done practice sessions today and the rain is an incredible addition to Iracing, I can only imagine doing the spa 24 and it throws it down during the night it'll be epic and scary at the same time. Also to me the puddles effects remind me of the madness engine on PC2 and AMS 2 but dialed to 11.
The race starts and all I'm staring at is TC _off_ on the dash. 🤣 I absolutely love the rain racing. Somehow my driving style is perfectly suited for it, I managed a win in GT3 (Audi) with 0x. and I won at Spa in LMP2, and I'd never even raced that car before!
yeah but the rain is dynamic so puddles form and then dry up, you can have heavy rain on one part of the track while its stopped on another plus the puddles have a realistic effect on handling.. no game comes close to this and i dont even play iracing lol
the tool tips in the garage screen explain it quite well , although it is different for each GT3, but I believe the BMW TC is wet 1-6 dry 7-11 and maybe 12 is off , but worth checking or you will have that slidey nightmare to fight with :D
generally if you race the rain tire on the dry part of the track for a long time, yes they will overheat till you get back on the wet part of the track.
I drove the Glickenhaus in LMU yesterday. I tried the iRaining today, its good but at first I was like what rain there is no rain here... I only feel grip... that Glickenhaus is worse than all the rains combined, its borderline undriveable in the first two laps so I came prepared.
Puddles in AMS2 and Project cars 2 act like puddles. There’s not as much variation other than the dry line as in iracing, but it’s still relatively dynamic.
You said that the rain/puddles etc. don't effect the car in other games, but AMS2 definitely has this. If you hit a big puddle in AMS2 you are toast; aquaplaning off into the barrier. It also had dry lines etc. The iRacing implementation is definitely better though.
iRacing really nailed the graphics when it comes to the track surface IMO 😁 PC2 had puddles, although I couldn't really see them, the whole track looked a similar slick. I only tried the rain at a couple of tracks but I distinctly remember a very large puddle at the end of one of the infield staight-aways at the Homestead roval. The tough part is it was right at my breaking point 🫣. I could drive ~10 ft to the left, in the middle of the track but then I couldn't get a good drive out of the corner. What I ended up doing is hitting the breaks for ~1/2 a second, come off the breaks & throttle then back on the breaks for the left hand turn. If I ignored the puddle I would spin in some random direction, that def gave me a strong sense of immersion 😌, but I didn't have the guts/ patience to do rain more. I didn't do any experimenting if grip was much different on or off the racing line. It mostly just seemed there was an equal decrease in grip everywhere except for puddles, the only one that really stood out was that one @ Homestead. GT Sport had some variation to the way the track looked but I couldn't see puddles or a dry line like here. Also I struggled w/ EXTREMELY low grip in the rain license test. Someone told me grip was much better if you drove the rain line (I didn't know what generally was the rain at the time) but again I could only see very mild difference of the track surface & not w/ any consistency that I noticed (def NOTHING like here)🤥
The carnage? Oh well nice drive. Other YT-bers have posted, I was looking forward to your upload and it was great. You didn’t mention,… you put on rain tyres, right? I did some testing in the Merc, an absolute blast! Way better than expected. I nearly had to change my drawers. Haha.
This is going to separate a lot of drivers. I used to race in the SCCA, and always loved the rain, because I was was smooth and always did well compared to others. I tried the ring in the rain yesterday in a Ferrari, I thought it was very comparable to what it really feels like, good job Iracing.
The rain is a technical marvel and very well done. I don't think it actually improves the service as a whole. It will be fun to play with for the next couple weeks until everyone basically avoids any race that has rain in it.
Turning off SSR (Even Low-Rain Only is too resource heavy - Rain-High is about 3 FPS less on my rig - AMD X3D/4090) will give you back 30-50FPS (depending on your PC hardware) assuming you are using 1440p triples. The puddle reflections are nice, but SSR has been around for ever and it's either very poorly optimized at the moment, or just limitations of the iRacing engine. With it off, it still looks good, and doesn't take anything away from seeing where the water is on the track surface. Besides, if you are looking at puddle reflections during a race, that's probably something you want to look at before anything else
Awesome performance Dave, with TC off. That means, when you turn it on, you will be twice as fast Puddles are definitely not the friend of any driver. You have to try the Ray FF1600 in the rain.
The rain looks to be a master piece with the wet line actually working but more than half the iracing community and sim racing in general aren’t ready for real rain . It’s gunna go 1 of 2 ways , people start driving sensible or people stop racing the weeks that have rain like the numbers drop when it’s monza all week
Interesting in a puckered sort off way. I'd be amazed if the rain effect on the physics didn't need some fettling. I have a very small amount of track experience ìn the wet and both car setup and driving line were very different, and I wasn't all that keen, think it took a few days for my eyes to reduce from the size of bin lids and the stalks to retreat 🤣 Very brave Dave! Terrifying entertainment at it's best.
Overtakes are going to be BRUTAL! If you go two-wide through a corner, SOMEBODY is going to be onb the slick wet and is going to inevitably spin out. Most of the time that will be the car on the inside line, which means if you are taking the proper outside line, you WILL get crashed into. Good luck with that! LOL
At first try it was twice as good as i thought it'd be. But i was in Basic Ollie's hosted race wet to dry and thats just another level altogether. So far i dont know if ive just been lucky or this is what the English weather has been preparing us for
The start looked worse than my 1.5k lobby, you'd think drivers at 4-5k would handle the wet a bit better, guess they think it's still dry.... absolute shocker :D
I tried it as soon as the servers came back online. I made the mistake of jumping into a GTP car as my first go at it. Those things are just absolutely impossible to drive on a wet track. Complete death traps. Which makes me wonder how anyone has the balls to drive an F1 car in the rain, especially since there's no windshield. Anyway, I'm very impressed by it. It's absolutely the most realistic rain racing I've ever experienced in a sim. Everything I hoped for.
"Those puddles are actually puddles, not just visual, something I don't think any other simulator has done before" give over Dave my man, ACC and AMS2 both have actual puddles. ACC has had them since it came out mate.
Instead of Dave asking us if we are alright, I feel we should be asking him if he is okay after this one 😂 entertaining as always, love the iRacing content
That's going to be our motto from now on.. "I don't care where I'm finish,...but I just wanna like do a lap". I always got a little irritated when people said, "iRacing doesn't even have rain,..other games are doing it for years" No, other games don't do it. What you get in other "sims" is just eye candy and a bit more slide on track. That's why it took so long. If the effect can't be realistic, it isn't worth being in the sim.
Dave driving in the wet: Weird squeals, crikeys and oofs. Julie driving in the wet: **bleep** **bleep** **bleep** .... **bleep** this for a game of solders.
Can we bow our heads in a moment of silence to honor the memory of the millions of points in SR that will die in the weeks and months ahead. May the racing Gods have mercy on our souls... and ratings.
I may or may not have had TC off for the whole race. Turning the dial all the way to the right turns it off it would seem :D
Dave’s out there using reverse hacks bop’ing himself 😂
Surprised you only binned it once with TC off, great drive mate
It’s incredible that you finished P3 at Nordschleife, in the rain, with TC off. Well done. 👍
🤣
Very impressive effort with no TC. 9 is the highest for anyone being more sensible 😊
The rain looks like an SR killer though, impressive as it is.
TC off is a great start into rain haha
It's a smart thing that you chose such a relaxing and laid back track for your first rain race. Imagine if you had picked a complex course.
This IS what we have been waiting for. Rain that forces you to adjust the driving to the conditions. Not just more slippery and visually more difficult. Actual physics to take into account. WORTH THE WAIT so that they could get it correct.
