  • The WaveTrans is a new kind of Bicycle Transmission that uses a revolutionary logic/design.
    You can change gears with a press of a button. It has six speeds.
    It's controlled by a microprocessor and a PLC which makes gear shifting really smooth and easy.
    The prototype presented here is a proof of concept.

    I could see this working with a ~12t - 14t small cog coupled with divided cable grip shift. Design the chain ring to expand only after smallest cog engagement. Need to make it work with cables though, not a computer.

    The music is fitting for when I first saw a pure mechanical version of this in the mid 1980s.
    It didn't sell well because it was prone to mechanical failures: too many small parts could not withstand the big forces on the gear blades.
    I wonder how modern materials cope with these forces.

    The BBC's Tomorrow's world featured this concept in the late 70's / early 80's it used Pistons mounted on springs. As load increased the springs compressed reducing the chain ring diameter, as torque reduced the springs pushed the Pistons out. It was a bit clunky though.

    I tried it few years back(not electric) and it turned out to be a vibrating machine rather than an innovative machine that could beat filthy gear shifters!

    • @chaincyclist2736
      @chaincyclist2736 3 роки тому

      I feel like it'd come down to it not being easy to manufacture and most people don't even know how a traditional derailleur works in the first place. Plus it seems like one of these would be pretty expensive to maintain.

  • @lights80088
    @lights80088 4 роки тому +1

    Looks to be something that could easily be knocked out of alignment or damaged if the bike falls or hits up against something. Also will be very expensive. There are much better alternatives. Also, as the "cogs" expand, how do you keep the chain from jumping teeth? You can even see the chain slacking in spots when pausing the video.

    • @peterdcrees
      @peterdcrees 3 роки тому

      You can see in the video the fins move one-by-one in the part of the rotation where there is no chain on them. It cannot expand under the chain.

      That was invented in the mid 90's the Auto Bike, it was not very popular because cycling at that time was kind of in the back burner with the take off in mountain biking.

    • @eyeofhoruswadjet4236
      @eyeofhoruswadjet4236 4 роки тому

      I thought the same thing but if they could make this within the price range of other e-shifters it would still be viable.

    • @exogator
      @exogator 4 роки тому

      @@eyeofhoruswadjet4236 only issue I see with no battery option is it would be hard and even more complicated to sequentially engage all of the "fin gears" idk what to call them but if you look at the video you can see it engages in a sort of wave one step per rotation it. You would either need an overcomplicate and more than likely heavier than the electric solution. Or run it centrifugally, but this would almost 100% be constantly unbalanced and thus a vibration magnet.

    Looks promicing but the gear ratio looks a bit tall to start with, I assume due to the mechanical limits in size of the actual mechanism which could work for road.
    Obviously the other concerns is weight and cost. Chain rings traditionally are a part that wears over time also. The actual gear teeth would need to be replacable and that is another cost concern.
    Cool concept.

    • @wavetrans5253

    Here we go: what about making a stretchable chain that eliminates the rear derailleur? If the chain was redesigned with a wide small-toothed belt made of interlocked magnetic or spring loaded plates, it might work without the teeth misaligning. No issues with assembly for me ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".
