Just getting into fountain pens and stumbled across the website and then this channel. I am so grateful for all the content on fountain pens. It's so great to educate myself on them. I know this is an old video, but just know that this channel is helping all of us newbies 💗
I would love to see an updated version of this video! It's been almost five years. An awful lot of pens have come out since then, and I'm sure you've personally become familiar with a lot of older pens since then. I would be really interested to see how you list has changed over the years.
Brian, thank you for this video! I appreciate your grass roots attitude with keeping the less expensive pens available in your store. I just purchased the Pilot Metropolitan for my daughter as her first fountain pen. I'm sure that once she's hooked, she'll be looking for something a bit more sophisticated. Oh, and thank you for such fast service in shipping...now to wait until she opens it Christmas morning! Warm regards, Suzette
As a person who made his first rollerball on the lathe 3 years ago, and did “throw aways” to my peers, made a fountain pen kit, then bought a few manufactured ones when they stole my heart......that story gave me all the feelings. I too still hold my first ugly rollerball as a reminder of where I’ve come from to where I am presently.
And this is because you (You as The Goulet and as Brian) don't forget where you're coming from that people affectionate you guys, because you are fair. I'm sure you'd never sell a fountain pen that doesn't write nicely, even if it's made out of unicorn's horn (is that right ?? always french, so...). But you've made this company from scratch and 10 years later, you get what you deserve : access to the highest quality of the product you choose to retail, this makes sense to me ! But you keep the less expensive ones in store and this is nice. And for all these very uncommon and true qualities, you've got another problem there Brian, can't you see it ? You've became "The Fountain Pen Ultimate Guru - Spiritual father of all the fountain pens freak" !
That's quite the title! Maybe Brian should have business cards made with it? Also, in our mission statement we have a part that mentions "products we believe in", so that speaks to the quality of the products we have on our site. - Colin
So far I follow you and Matt Armstrong. I know Matt has stopped making videos now. However, him and everyone at GPC, has given me a wealth of knowledge. For that, I say thank you.
I have been with you all from the beginning. I am so thankful for your continual success. I hope to meet you two one day. Thank you so much for all you do.
Maybe we can have an update of this in a few more years as well please Brian? Something to think about.. in how things are changing. I would watch it. : ))
If someone deserves to carry maki-é is the Goulet Pen Co since you value quality, hardwork, the individuality that comes with choosing to write with a FP... thank you for this post. Really enjoyed it !
Great info and pens across the "budget" spectrum, so to speak. Oh, and love the T-shirt! I have seen them live at least 3 times. Thanks for all you do.
Ahab is a fun pen because of the flex nib. Offers what a lot of people are looking for when trying fountain pens, but it can be finicky and there's a bit of a learning curve with it! - Colin
Mine are: Pilot VP. TWSBI Precision. TWSBI Eco. Sheaffer Snorkel (that filling mechanism). Wing Sung 601 (also a great filling mechanism). I also like FPR’s ultra flex nib in their muft. PenBBS 469 (perfectly balanced, as all things should be). Pilot Metropolitan (Stub).
My current top 10 from what I personally own would be equally fluid but let's try. Lamy 2000. Lamy Safari. Pilot Prera. Wing Sung 3011. Parker Duofold Junior. Parker 17 Super. Pilot Metro/MR series. Wing Sung 3003. Pilot 78G(+). Twsbi Eco.
Our videos tend to focus on products we carry, which does not include those at this time. In general, I tend to think there are better options out there for the price, for both pens & inks. - Colin
+The Goulet Pen Company Okay Colin. I asked this because I live in India and these brands are the most commonly available here and brands like Noodlers are not available in our country. Very helpful videos btw.
As you can tell, it's really difficult for Brian to narrow this down to 10. I would also assume this list might change on a weekly basis. While not in this slice, I can't imagine the Safari/Al-Star being too much further down. - Colin
+Matthias Friedmann Not bad at all - Brian shared the ones that immediately came to mind, but he has quite the collection so it's hard to choose ;) -Margaret
Hey :), I do not want to make any commercial for this company, I do not get paid for this. You should check out the Waldmann fountain pens, made in Germany. When I first got one, about 2 years ago, I have pretty much been using it ever since. Why do I tell you this, This is my personal Top pen. I write everything with it letters, notes, exams, lists and my diary.
+thewolfmasters Just checked out their website. Gorgeous pens! I'll pass this along to Brian. He likes to know brands that people want that we don't currently carry for future reference. So thanks! - Colin
neil piper I'd not call this American bias, it's very expensive to get some products. If you live in Germany some brands might be easier to come by than others. Since you talk kaweco (I only use their inks, didn't like their pens for the most part) I would suggest you are from Europe. Their products are really affordable. But maybe try getting Japanese products for example pilot iroshizuku ink you will pay nearly 50€ a bottle. That's mainly because of import taxes. Really that's why I mentioned my favourite pen, I wasn't really expect that goulet pen could get their hands on one.
We actually have a slice on that because lots of people wanted to know what Rachel likes, check it out: ua-cam.com/video/ZMkeD6m0d1k/v-deo.html - Colin
I'm sure I'm not the only one who now wants to have a look at that pen cabinet, now that we know that you have such a thing.
Brian shows it off a bit in our shop tour in Q&A 100 if you're curious: ua-cam.com/video/g37Yz7CzY7U/v-deo.html - Colin
The Goulet Pen Company aaaaah! I'm going to watch that video NOW. Thank you!

You have done so much to educate many around the World about fountain pens. Your videos are very educational.
And this is because you (You as The Goulet and as Brian) don't forget where you're coming from that people affectionate you guys, because you are fair. Cool to see this origin story! The pens behind the company
So far I follow you and Matt Armstrong. I know Matt has stopped making videos now. However, him and everyone at GPC, has given me a wealth of knowledge. For that, I say thank you.
Yes, your videos are really a big help for newbies like me.. Make more! Excited for the pilot thing!
And oh yeah, i finally got a pilot metropolitan and a preppy! Thanks for the inspiration!
+Jeremiah Anthony Reynaldo Awesome choices! Enjoy! -Margaret
Right, you are Gandhi of fountain pen world.
"My name is Brian, and I have a pen problem"
+Nic Javelosa ya -Brian Goulet
And to have pens ‘broken in’; every time I hear that phrase I can’t help but think of these virgin pens being deflowered by the avid user. 😀
I have been with you all from the beginning. I am so thankful for your continual success. I hope to meet you two one day. Thank you so much for all you do.
Thanks so much for all the support through the years! - Colin
Maybe we can have an update of this in a few more years as well please Brian? Something to think about.. in how things are changing. I would watch it. : ))
I think you should get into making a catagory of handmade pens and handmade nibs. It would be amazing to see that category.
I love the story/stories behind!
Why do I keep forgeting that the Lamy 2000 is a gold nib? I can't get it out of my head that it is stainless like the safari or the vista.
If someone deserves to carry maki-é is the Goulet Pen Co since you value quality, hardwork, the individuality that comes with choosing to write with a FP... thank you for this post. Really enjoyed it !
I am so excited you are wearing a Trans- Siberian Orchestra Shirt!!!!! Great video but that is the best part!
Great info and pens across the "budget" spectrum, so to speak. Oh, and love the T-shirt! I have seen them live at least 3 times. Thanks for all you do.
"they're all like my children, I love my pens"
Excited to try the Ahab. I didn't know you made pens to help start Goulet. Very cool. I'm new to pens but I've already watched so many of you videos👌
Ahab is a fun pen because of the flex nib. Offers what a lot of people are looking for when trying fountain pens, but it can be finicky and there's a bit of a learning curve with it! - Colin
Is it just me, or is Brian Goulet totes adorrrrrable?
Mine are:

TWSBI Eco.

Loving the Trans Siberian Orchestra shirt. Merry Christmas to you and the family.
+chris zietz Merry Christmas to you too :) -Brian Goulet
+Brian and Team, keep doing what you're doing guys! Your videos are awesome!
14:45 A shout-out to Michael Matteson, from www.inkdependence.com, a great and fun ink & pen reviewer
Ahab didn’t work for me, neither did the pilot falcon. :( I’ve now turned to getting my line variation from stubs instead.
Great video, Brian. Thank you for sharing. :-)
Why don't you talk about Cross, Parker and Sheaffer pens and inks?
Our videos tend to focus on products we carry, which does not include those at this time. In general, I tend to think there are better options out there for the price, for both pens & inks. - Colin
+The Goulet Pen Company Okay Colin. I asked this because I live in India and these brands are the most commonly available here and brands like Noodlers are not available in our country. Very helpful videos btw.
Hmm I was expecting a Lamy Safari in this list
As you can tell, it's really difficult for Brian to narrow this down to 10. I would also assume this list might change on a weekly basis. While not in this slice, I can't imagine the Safari/Al-Star being too much further down. - Colin
I bought a Conklin Duragraph but it Skips All the time so I Kind a don’t use this pen anymore cause it is just annoying anyone knows what to do ?
Thank you for the video. But I was very surprised why this list was not included Faber-Castell. Is it so bad ?!
+Matthias Friedmann Not bad at all - Brian shared the ones that immediately came to mind, but he has quite the collection so it's hard to choose ;) -Margaret
Brian is clearly a Pilot fanboy!
(for good reason)
Hey :),
