When I go to cemeteries to clean relatives' graves, I sometimes wander around and pull back the growth on long forgotten ones and clean them up a bit and literally say the person's name, wondering how long it's been since their name was actually spoken out loud on Earth.
I know. Imagine how he stops vandals. I guess their bodies are never found. There's a columnbarium in Alabama that I frequent that is guarded by wasps, black widows and scorpions. And me and the landowners thrive on it. Not every event can be caught on camera. We get extra security. They get a safe place to live.

Charlie Shellhouse was just 22 years old. He worked as a logger and was killed when a log fell on him while he was unloading the truck. He was the oldest of four sons.
They just don't make grave markers like they used to..I absolutely love the epitaphs on them. Little Maude's is beautiful but very sad...it makes me wonder what happened to her. Another beautiful adventure. ❤

Such interesting surnames. The British meaning of Lew is a place of shelter. So there's a Buckhouse, a Shellhouse, and Hilton is like a great big house and a Rig is a horse-drawn wheeled vehicle for carrying passengers to the various houses. Sounds like a fun community.

Thank you for the woodman's stone with carvings. I saw one up in around Oneida, NY years ago. The date on the tomb was born 1750 death 1825, and other old tomb stones with chiseled markings on them dating back to the mid 1700's. The family generations from way back fought in the Indian Wars before the 13 Colonies were ever born. Their family is English stock and now mixed with American. Am proud of this family because they still have a large family and keeping up with the traditions of their forefather's. Am still proud now, cause I just spoke to one of the great great great great great grandchildren of this family. I love history, and they had plenty of it. Sidestep, you do a wonderful work by looking into these old cemeteries. One day, they will all be emptied. Cause the Lord, promised he would bring them all back on earth once the earth has been cleansed from all wickedness and plagues. And his Kingdom (or government) will rule from Heaven over the earth! What a blessing that will be to see these first pioneers of this new land.

Hello Robert, I went visiting cemeteries last week and I picked up and straightened up tombstones that had fallen down. I have one more to fix it is a very tall monument that has fallen off the base I'm going to level up the base and take a tripod and block and tackle to lift it up.. gonna be hard to do buddy
My Father always said respect the dead. For whatever you do to them that shall be done to you. Although our soul & spirit departs from our body the memorial of your existence is undeniable for you once lived but now lay with the expired.
He was a sweet doggy . He was loving the attention . Those were some old graves for sure . It's sad to see them falling apart , but you can tell that they were once beautiful headstones and markers . The witch grave was spooky . It looked like some of the rocks were burned . I remember there used to be an old tell about a woman in Hall county Ga. and people said she was a witch . This reminded me of that . Some people would go to her for "medicines " and to have their fortunes told . I knew a woman that wanted a baby so much , so she went to visit the witch . The witch told the woman that she would go on a trip and she told her some different things to do while on this trip with her husband . So the woman did what the witch told her to do and sure enough the woman and her husband finally got pregnant and had a little girl . I don't remember all of the things she said she had to do while on the trip , but I do know that while they were on their trip they did get pregnant . lol !! I don't really believe it all that witch stuff , but I do believe in old timey remedies for medicines . I think that God put things on this earth to help us no doubt . I believe those things got handed down from generations to generations and if a old woman was using these remedies.... they were accused of being witches. Some might really have been practicing evil things and those are the scary ones that I .....for one don't care to fool with . Yikes !! I thought some of the rocks looked burned too, so maybe it wasn't a grave at all. Maybe it was a chimney that got knocked down. Could've been from the 1st church on the site, maybe.

I thought the same thing. It might have been just a small group of people that thought she was a witch and placed the stones after she was buried. Poor woman was probably a widow that lived alone.
I thought it might have been a chimney from an old building that got knocked down and was never hauled off. It's weird that there'd only be one like that, and you're right that they probably wouldn't have buried a witch on church grounds. (He did say there was a church, right?)
I think you're right. My understanding is that the church would not allow for witches or other heretics to be buried in a churchyard (graveyard). That's why we have cemeteries.
Awww such a friendly trusting doggy 🐶 we all need doggy love right now to help lessen the stress. So many little ones there also and Maudes inscription made me tear up for the parent who wrote that.
I love walking through old cemeteries. I visited a very old cemetery outside Sharon Springs, KS a few years back. It's full of old pioneers and civil war volunteers, during that time period.
The headstone for Maude was pretty sad. She was only 15 years old when she died. It would be interesting who is buried under that pile of rocks. That she was a witch might just be a tale that cropped up over the years. There might be some public records about who it is. It's pity there's no headstone. It could be that it was someone who had no family and was too poor to afford a headstone. At the very least, she was a human being.
Near where I live there is a baby's grave made and carved from marble!! So beautiful!!! It's a baby's bed and there's an indent in the pillow,. and the blanket is turned back! No writing use your imagination!!!!!!
Love seeing your videos. I miss my Georgia home. That Church and cemetery looks like the one my Dad and his family is are buried at. They are around Berlin . There are two Cemeteries about five miles apart that our family is laid to rest at.
Aww, what a beautiful dog! That "not so bright" grave looks dangerous. I wonder if Maude's grave was designed to hold water? It definitely would've looked so elegant when it was erected. Very sad if that is a grave of a suspected witch. Hopefully at peace.
What's better than a dog? Sitting in a lawn chair near the cemetery with a cooler full of beer hanging out with the dog and waiting for a witch to come out of that grave and scare the shit out of someone standing by her grave. Then have the dog look at ya with that "I told you so" look. LOL

I very much enjoyed this episode. I love and look forward to all your postings. It's so obvious how much your care about your local history and preserving the past for future generations. I am always amazed by the famous Red Georgia earth we see as you forage out these cemetery plots and homesteads long forgotten. I along with many are fascinated with the Early American and Civil War history that Georgia has. I loved the Dog in this episode. Large like a wolf in comparison to the lady pictured with him. Collies and German Shepards are large like that and sweet like this one was. Thank you, for keeping us entertained and educated during these Isolation Days.

you said it's an old church graveyard that means connected ground they would never barry a witch in the connected ground. The witch's grave looks like an older style grave, not from someone wanting to keep a witch down you got to think about this all the other graves have a large slab over the top what to prevent that from happing what your showing,me mean's is the water table is high so to prevent the coffin or as what is called today the casket from coming up from the ground they would place a heavy stone on top they would do that also to prevent animals from getting into the grave for food that is what that is about. A crown on a tombstone, whether an engraving or the whole stone, represents the glory of life after death and the deceased's ascension into heaven. It also may mean immortality, victory and righteousness

As a find-'a-grave member, an opportunity to photograph all headstones and put them on the website. There's so many cemeteries that are lost , never to be found. And family who aren't able to travel or even find some of these places, you're already there! Just a suggestion??
The dog reminded me of a true event. At one of our local cemeteries an old man and his dog lived next to this cemetery. The old man died and was buried in the cemetery next to his home. One of his children took the dog to care for it but every day the dog would go to the cemetery and lay on his masters grave. The dog wouldn't eat and soon it died also. How did that dog know that his master, buried within a sealed concrete vault, know his master rested there?
Sounds like an adaptation of Grayfriars Bobby. A Graveyard in Edinburgh Scotland. Local lore said he lived by his masters grave till the dog too passed. There is a memorial to him there. In reality, a grave yard is a good place for them to find food and not be bothered.
I read a story about a French Bulldog in Indiana who did the same thing. Might be an interesting new urban legend..who knows? Dogs are loyal and the best of God's creatures! 🐶🥰
Nice video, the dog is so friendly, that dog loved you. I think I like to be buried in Georgia. I'm in Florida, elevation is too low. The old graves back then were so decorative.
I'm glad you take your time to go though these places and read off the names. That's awesome of you to do. As for the witch, I'm pagan and see many things not right about that story. But most of all if ppl felt that true back in that day she would not be in a graveyard. Maybe a cemetery but they would not have put her next to a church. But most ppl that actually practiced back then you would have never known. It was a secret that their life depended on.

If anyone is interested, there's a book I'd like to recommend titled "Your Guide to Cemetery Research" by Sharon DeBartolo Carmack. It has helpful information for genealogists AND people who love to visit cemeteries. Happy Easter!
No matter how beloved we are, those who care for our graves must pass too and eventually the graves themselves decay, despite being of stone. It simply underscores my belief that we are not that important. Some of the world's greatest leaders graves have been lost to time. I only hope there is truly an afterlife, because life it way too short, but I doubt it, really do.
The witch's grave? Probably an old woman who was knowledgeable in traditional medicines and treated the locals. Perhaps she was African American and esteemed in her own community as a wise woman and somehow came to be buried there. Hence, the peculiar but ancient tradition of a rock-covered grave. God bless her soul and give her peaceful rest.
There are people today who consider themselves "witches" but are not the evil kind we normally think about on Halloween. These witches attain their "power' in the spirituality of Nature, not unlike many indigenous peoples. Their pagan beliefs are known as Wicca..

It is unbiblical to condemn someone on hearsay or suspicion, yet our religious history in America has been plagued with fearful individuals and groups that seek to vilify that which they either do not understand or that they mistake for wrongful practice.
She was old enough to be married in those days!!! I can't imagine anyone in that era expecting to live to an ripe old age with so many dying at 40 or younger!! She was almost middle aged!!!

Actually Amish and Quakers believe planting a tree on a cursed person grave will trap their soul as long as the tree doesn't die.

This reminded me of that . Some people would go to her for "medicines " and to have their fortunes told . I knew a woman that wanted a baby so much , so she went to visit the witch . The witch told the woman that she would go on a trip and she told her some different things to do while on this trip with her husband . So the woman did what the witch told her to do and sure enough the woman and her husband finally got pregnant and had a little girl . I don't remember all of the things she said she had to do while on the trip , but I do know that while they were on their trip they did get pregnant . lol !! I don't really believe it all that witch stuff , but I do believe in old timey remedies for medicines . I think that God put things on this earth to help us no doubt . I believe those things got handed down from generations to generations and if a old woman was using these remedies.... they were accused of being witches. Some might really have been practicing evil things and those are the scary ones that I .....for one don't care to fool with . Yikes !! I thought some of the rocks looked burned too, so maybe it wasn't a grave at all. Maybe it was a chimney that got knocked down. Could've been from the 1st church on the site, maybe.

I thought the same thing. It might have been just a small group of people that thought she was a witch and placed the stones after she was buried. Poor woman was probably a widow that lived alone.
I thought it might have been a chimney from an old building that got knocked down and was never hauled off. It's weird that there'd only be one like that, and you're right that they probably wouldn't have buried a witch on church grounds. (He did say there was a church, right?)
She could have been a "granny" . celtic druid, like granny on the Beverly Hillbillies. They where highly revered and would be buried in a cemetery.
She might be buried just outside the consecrated boundary.
I think you're right. My understanding is that the church would not allow for witches or other heretics to be buried in a churchyard (graveyard). That's why we have cemeteries.
That doggy is very well taken care of! His coat is so clean and tangle free. Hard to do with a long haired dog in the spring!!!

I love walking through old cemeteries. I visited a very old cemetery outside Sharon Springs, KS a few years back. It's full of old pioneers and civil war volunteers, during that time period.
No way I'd walk through that's disrespect to the deceased don't mess with stuff if you don't have knowledge

The headstone for Maude was pretty sad. She was only 15 years old when she died.
It would be interesting who is buried under that pile of rocks. That she was a witch might just be a tale that cropped up over the years. There might be some public records about who it is. It's pity there's no headstone. It could be that it was someone who had no family and was too poor to afford a headstone. At the very least, she was a human being.
or.. what if all it was a pile of rocks and there is no body buried there?

Near where I live there is a baby's grave made and carved from marble!! So beautiful!!! It's a baby's bed and there's an indent in the pillow,. and the blanket is turned back! No writing use your imagination!!!!!!

What's better than a dog? Sitting in a lawn chair near the cemetery with a cooler full of beer hanging out with the dog and waiting for a witch to come out of that grave and scare the shit out of someone standing by her grave. Then have the dog look at ya with that "I told you so" look. LOL

I very much enjoyed this episode. I love and look forward to all your postings. It's so obvious how much your care about your local history and preserving the past for future generations. I am always amazed by the famous Red Georgia earth we see as you forage out these cemetery plots and homesteads long forgotten. I along with many are fascinated with the Early American and Civil War history that Georgia has. I loved the Dog in this episode. Large like a wolf in comparison to the lady pictured with him. Collies and German Shepards are large like that and sweet like this one was. Thank you, for keeping us entertained and educated during these Isolation Days.

you said it's an old church graveyard that means connected ground they would never barry a witch in the connected ground. The witch's grave looks like an older style grave, not from someone wanting to keep a witch down you got to think about this all the other graves have a large slab over the top what to prevent that from happing what your showing,me mean's is the water table is high so to prevent the coffin or as what is called today the casket from coming up from the ground they would place a heavy stone on top they would do that also to prevent animals from getting into the grave for food that is what that is about. As a find-'a-grave member, an opportunity to photograph all headstones and put them on the website. There's so many cemeteries that are lost , never to be found. And family who aren't able to travel or even find some of these places, you're already there! Just a suggestion??
The dog reminded me of a true event. At one of our local cemeteries an old man and his dog lived next to this cemetery. The old man died and was buried in the cemetery next to his home. One of his children took the dog to care for it but every day the dog would go to the cemetery and lay on his masters grave. The dog wouldn't eat and soon it died also. How did that dog know that his master, buried within a sealed concrete vault, know his master rested there?

Sounds like an adaptation of Grayfriars Bobby. A Graveyard in Edinburgh Scotland. Local lore said he lived by his masters grave till the dog too passed. There is a memorial to him there. In reality, a grave yard is a good place for them to find food and not be bothered.
I read a story about a French Bulldog in Indiana who did the same thing. Might be an interesting new urban legend..who knows? Dogs are loyal and the best of God's creatures! 🐶🥰

I'm glad you take your time to go though these places and read off the names. That's awesome of you to do. As for the witch, I'm pagan and see many things not right about that story. But most of all if ppl felt that true back in that day she would not be in a graveyard. Maybe a cemetery but they would not have put her next to a church. But most ppl that actually practiced back then you would have never known. It was a secret that their life depended on.

No matter how beloved we are, those who care for our graves must pass too and eventually the graves themselves decay, despite being of stone. It simply underscores my belief that we are not that important. Some of the world's greatest leaders graves have been lost to time. I only hope there is truly an afterlife, because life it way too short, but I doubt it, really do.

The witch's grave? Probably an old woman who was knowledgeable in traditional medicines and treated the locals. Perhaps she was African American and esteemed in her own community as a wise woman and somehow came to be buried there. Hence, the peculiar but ancient tradition of a rock-covered grave.
God bless her soul and give her peaceful rest.

There are people today who consider themselves "witches" but are not the evil kind we normally think about on Halloween. These witches attain their "power' in the spirituality of Nature, not unlike many indigenous peoples. Their pagan beliefs are known as Wicca..

Maude -- 15 years old. Like every adolescent, she expected to live forever. Tragic.
She was old enough to be married in those days!!! I can't imagine anyone in that era expecting to live to an ripe old age with so many dying at 40 or younger!! She was almost middle aged!!!
ALMOST 15. I think 11 days shy of her birthday?
