those bouncy runs/vibrato bits are called 'harkat' in hindi and 'gamakalu' in my language and probably a hundred other things in a hundred other indian languages. Its one of the most prominent characteristics of indian vocals. Its really fun to do!
Well, whole classical indian music is way lot different than western classical music... The way Shreya did those multiple notes so fast is very common in indian classical music.. In fact I would suggest that you should watch classical singers like Kishori Amonkar or Pt. Bhimsen Joshi or Kaushiki Chakraborty (someone from current era)... All those singers you saw in that video were pop bollywood singers (some of them had classical music training though like Shreya Ghoshal)...
It's called "Sangadhis" in classical carnatic music (the runs you are referring to are just fast arrangement of notes and are a very common occurrence in Indian music)
Ah yes. Adding to that, in terms of western music theory, this would not be recommended at all because during those runs, even though they are in the corresponding scale of the verse, they would instead be jumping in and out of almost all the different modes which can easily throw off a regular western vocalist.
Actually what you are thinking are nasalized vowels is actually a soft "N", the nasal sound is a separate letter in the Southeast Asian languages. Say the letter "n" but don't let the tip of your tongue touch the roof of your mouth and that's an actual letter or an accent
5:00 That Sonu Nigam guy is extremely talented, he can sing in 20+ different languages and has an active career of around 30yrs. That one Kal ho na ho song can't describe his talent.

Tristan! I've been a subscriber for a long time, I've got some good stuff for you to react to, please read! As an Indian singer who sings western pop and rock as well as the traditional Indian style which you heard in this video I could give you some context on the doubts you had. (GUYS PLEASE LIKE SO HE CAN SEE THIS!) So basically this style is derived from Indian Classical Music, which itself is divided into two - Hindustani (North India) and Carnatic (South India). So these styles have a way of gliding over notes that can be likened to a "run" but not exactly, because the notes are not just hit, but also there is an oscillation involved in between the notes themselves (which is a called a "gamaka" in Carnatic). Even though these videos showed mainstream Bollywood singers who aren't necessarily "Indian Classical" singers, generally when you hear Indians sing, they have that flair anyway. And yes, Indian languages in general are very nasal, so it bleeds into the singing as well. Infact when I sing in English, I have to reduce some of my normal nasality, add breathiness and add that "ih" vowel that talk about, to fit the modern pop style. You would love these two impressive clips of Indian Classical singing, Hindustani and Carnatic respectively. Just some hints before you watch them. Indian Classical music is 90% improvised, only fixed thing are the lyrics of the composition they use and the scale (called a "raga") it is set in. Also the words "Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni, Sa" that you hear them improvise with in different combinations is our solfege system which corresponds to Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do in the Western system. This is a traditional Hindustani concert by the famous and talented singer Kaushiki Chakraborty. ua-cam.com/video/uEqYzdz3Zvg/v-deo.html And this is another famous and talented Carnatic singer, Sid Sriram, singing a composition with a piano accompaniment. It's not a traditional Carnatic concert with all the instruments but this is great video to appreciate the beautiful and nuance-filled singing in all its glory. Enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/KnLTHJOsu5c/v-deo.html Because you said you wanted to listen to women more, here's a wonderful performance of a legendary Carnatic musician in a traditional Carnatic setting, Bombay Jayashri! ua-cam.com/video/dKqLEhFf6Cg/v-deo.html

About those nasal sounds... That's just how the pronunciation of those lyrics is. Hindi has got a nasal syllable called "Chandra bindu", which is put in many common words too.
I’ve been a huge fan of Bollywood since I was really little, the way they sing is just amazing and the movies are so fun. I could never replicate that fast vibrato run thing they can do. Drives me nuts, but I’ll get it one day!
It's not quite vibrato ..it's just jumping notes really really fast...it's a Indian classical thing, we practice saying the seven notes in various sequences as fast as possible ...
My top 4 most iconic Bollywood singers (edit - in no particular order) Female: Lata Mangeshkar Asha Bhosle Shreya Ghoshal Sunidhi Chauhan Male: Sonu Nigam Arjit Singh Udit Narayan Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
It’s the language that has those sounds, in Hindi, the “yohn” or “yahn” (idk how to properly express this) is added to the end of certain words to make them plural :)
The crazy part is these are mostly clips of them being asked to ring in quite random locations (like during an interview, or on a red carpet etc) - you gotta check out some of the bigger stars separately and break them down, would love to hear what you think.
Stefani Araujo he should be coming back soon if your search up his ig he explains what he’s been doing and he practically needs sunshine to function so over this winter it’s been hard for him he said after winter is over he should be coming back. I’m not trying to put words in his mouth this is just what I got from what he said, he also started posting again on his ig so that’s a good sign. This was in February and he said maybe he would come back in 2 months and he ended it at that so once again he should be coming back to yt!
Cody _ Yup! Going along with that, Tristan just posted on his IG story that he just finished filming a UA-cam video and is editing! He should be back soon!!
Ferxani yep it’s a real thing most people need sunshine to be be functioning outside it’s almost like a depressive episode, except people lack sun light which is vitamin D I think
Just FYI, what you’re hearing when the singers sing out a lot of notes in one run is called a “ghamak” it’s our version of pop runs. Instead of do re mi fa so la ti do, we have a different scale that you should listen to!
Singing nasal and sounding like that slightly is different. Tristan is talking about Sonu Nigam's tone which has a nasal resonance. Sounding nasal is not always bad and a certain way of nasality is actually accepted in classical music.
Hindi language have so many words which you cant pronounce without nasal tone. Thats what he was saying,so every indian singer have a lot of nasal resonance compared to english singer.

those bouncy runs/vibrato bits are called 'harkat' in hindi and 'gamakalu' in my language and probably a hundred other things in a hundred other indian languages. Its one of the most prominent characteristics of indian vocals. Its really fun to do!
Cool fact thanks👌🏼
Rightly explained
Was going to write this.
Shirley's career in one line: she's so pretty.
True AF only pretty looks with a lot of autotunes
Lol ! 😂
True. All her songs are auto tuned.
Bruh !!!! :)
The only reason i came across her because of her cuteness.
The "runs" are just extra notes in musical scales most traditional Asian music uses
Apparently in Indian music, they're called "gamakas"
ua-cam.com/video/AIPraIlSmIk/v-deo.html
@@drea94 gamak is an umbrella term. the correct term i think is "harkat"
@@drea94 in hindustani classical its called harkat or murki
@@akshhat Ohh okay. Thanks!
@@imarebel6367 Thanks for the correction!

(GUYS PLEASE LIKE SO HE CAN SEE THIS!)
So basically this style is derived from Indian Classical Music, which itself is divided into two - Hindustani (North India) and Carnatic (South India).
This is a traditional Hindustani concert by the famous and talented singer Kaushiki Chakraborty.
ua-cam.com/video/uEqYzdz3Zvg/v-deo.html
And this is another famous and talented Carnatic singer, Sid Sriram, singing a composition with a piano accompaniment. It's not a traditional Carnatic concert with all the instruments but this is great video to appreciate the beautiful and nuance-filled singing in all its glory. Enjoy!
