    You are refreshingly honest David. The table has been given a new lease of life. I know pine is not the most sought after furniture, but I like it. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! I am, of course, referring to Daisy. Of course, the table is gorgeous too. Yet another high quality restoration. This table looks quite, quite lovely and I think the owner will be very pleased with it. I like the way that you give an overview of what you are doing and not have us watch 30 minutes of sanding and a tedious monologue as I have seen on so many channels. It is great to see someone take such pride in what is produced. Well done and be proud of yourself.

    Hi David, another great job! I totally appreciate you filming the ‘ooops’ bit with the stain/bleed through, as this happened to me too grrrr I’m pretty sure it’s the oils/tannins in the pine that seep through when the top coat goes on, as on my second attempt I sealed the stain with poly before adding the paint wash and it worked just great. Anyway aside from the chore of you having to re-sand it all the finished result looks fab so well done….as always I really enjoy your videos, thank you⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

      Spirit stain with a water based finish shouldn't be a problem we do floors like that. Rather than use white Spirit in future try methylated spirits. White Spirit can leave an oily residue if not completely dry

    Looks like a hydrophobic effect. That is, the oily components of your finishes are trying to group together leaving the water based components by themselves. My guess is that when you sanded and stained, you stirred up some oily resins in the wood and then you spread them around by rubbing paint into the surface. Now you’ve got little blobules of oil on the surface and you hit it with a water based top coat. Before the polymer could lock into place, the oily blobs started to coalesce away from the top coat.
    That’s my best guess and I’m sticking with it. I think what might have helped was to set the stain. Are there such things as clear primers? I am not a furniture refinisher. I’ll have to pass this one by someone I know who used to do this professionally.

    • @damepasty9203
      @damepasty9203 Рік тому +2

      I think your theory is correct. Pine is a real pain to stain because it usually takes the stain unevenly. This is partly due to the difference in hardness between the knots and the smoother parts of the wood. And since he did sand to bare wood, the natural oils would have an effect too. Best solution when you get down to raw pine is to use a clear sanding sealer before staining. This helps keep the oils in and allows for more even penetration of the stain.

    • @MayfieldRestorations
      @MayfieldRestorations  Рік тому +2

      Hi Kim. Thanks you so much for your detailed comment. I think you're definitely correct, it seems to be a combination of the natural oils in the wood, the type of stain and topcoat i used and drying times. You live and learn as they say. Thanks again for taking the time. 😀😀👍

    I have a table very much like this in the barn, been languishing there for some time. I'd thought about stripping it back to bare wood but it, too, is pine. This is an excellent idea, so will give it a go. (As a guess, pine has a lot of sap and resin; without sealing it first, that would be my guess why it went wrong the first go-round.)

    Greetings, David!
    I am a new fan and enjoy your transformations as your talent for adding color or stain contrasts is brilliant. The "Orange Peel" you developed on the finish coat is not uncommon. Without an extensive drying period, oil-based stains followed by a water-based finish will result in orange peel. A simple solution and a time-proven one is a sealing coat of shellac in between. It can be a "spit or wash coat" meaning a 50/50 mixture of shellac to alcohol. Then there is no bleed-through to subsequent coats of oil or water finish. The shellac locks everything down to prevent bleeding through stains or odors from musty drawers.
    Also, if the viscosity of your finish coat is high, then the sprayer will not atomize the finish material into a fine mist. In my experience, I prefer to apply many thin coats of thinned finish and use a 1000-grit light pass of sandpaper in between each coat to build a beautiful finish.
    Granted it takes longer but you will be very pleased with the final coat. Cheers and continued growth for your channel and Daisy's fan base😃

      Hi John and welcome to the channel. Thankyou so much for taking the time to give me such a detailed answer regarding the issue I had. I think you are dead right in that I used and alcohol based stain and more than likely didn't leave it to dry long enough. Thanks for the tip on using a diluted shellac too. One question regarding that, If i "seal" the stain and therefore the wood pores, will i still get the same look using the Paintwash on top of the shellac? Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm always looking to learn. Thanks David 😀👍

    Props to your client for having you update this piece instead of just buying a new table. This piece is so functional and well made, but I agree the yellowish varnish of the pine is a bit dated. Another fabulous job!

    I’m not a fan of painted furniture in general, but I like how this turned out. I can understand why the customer was tired of the look, and the white base certainly toned down the yellow-orange look. Great job!

    I thought I noticed the stain “fish eyeing” as you put the stain on. I wonder if there was a waxy residue that caused the problem with the paint wash. Tom Johnson treats the fish eye with Wax Wash. Just a thought.
