This video is so nostalgic. I was born the year after this but it felt like a magical time. And you have almost paradise playing in the background. Perfect.
If only we could go back in time huh? Every hotel and motel had it's own unique features that appealed to everyone. Now days it's cluttered with tall buildings that it is starting to look like Chicago or New york. I miss this ERA of Las vegas. Even the station playing in the car 95.5 is now a country station called the "Bull".
I was a Strip Shuttle Driver for All State Car Rental during this period. Working my way through college and best job ever! I have so many incredible stories which I told my kids over the years and they didn't even believe them. That was the greatest time of my life. The people and celebrities I met. Amazing. The things I did and experienced in Vegas in my early 20's I am so blessed to have done. Then graduating from UNLV and working at a local TV station. I think about those times a lot lately. If I could go back and re-live that time I would Should write a book.
My first time in Vegas I stayed at the westward HO, directly across from the Riviera, they were famous for the foot long hot dogs and the hat man. I had a great time and I was only 23. Thanks for the memories. I will never forget them.
Beautiful. It took me to the 'hey days' of America.... This is the Las Vegas I used to know from the movies. Full of casinos. Now it's even more beautiful. But I always like the nostalgic moment. The funny thing, the music doesn't feel too old, because I still hear it on the radio.
00:18 parking lot of Paddle Wheel (demolished) 01:27 Landmark (demolished) - turns west on Convention Center Dr 02:04 Paddle Wheel (demolished) 02:21 Somerset Motel (demolished) 02:27 left: Royal / right: Villa Roma Motel (now Rodeway Inn) 02:45 Stardust (demolished) - car turns north on the strip 03:18 Silver City Casino (demolished, Ross Dress for Less) 03:20 Peppermill, El Morocco (demolished) 03:24 Westward Ho (demolished) 03:31 La Concha (demolished), Riviera (soon to be demolished) 04:18 Slots a Fun, Circus Circus (video repeats)
Wow! La Concha and the Wedding Chapel! So many classic Strip landmarks are now gone! Great video! I can't believe how low the prices of drinks and shows were!
This is a great post, I was born in april 1987 and I will be going to vegas for the first time 2 weeks staying at the Flamingo. Im fascinated by the history of vegas and enjoy seeing how it looked before!
Very nice Sir. Thank you for the memories. Your Sony was very good for the time. I just turned 21 when you shot this recording. At least I was able to see the big transformation of Las Vegas over the years. Thanks to kind people like you. Take care.......:)
Great footage. Love how the trek starts with the PaddleWheel and the great Landmark tower. That entire stretch of Convention Center drive heading west to the strip has transformed over the years.
The Last Days of when Las Vegas was great...Glad you fllmed this!... And I'm sure you wish you'd taken more!.. Oh, I remember those bands...those hotels, ...ALL of it!... I lived in L.A. and used to come over often!...would usually stay in one of the smaller places like you did... The traffic wasn't PACKED like today..nor were the crowds!..and it was just MORE FUN, anywhere you went!...
Wow! that was before the Riviera had the casino in the front and their original sign that ended up on Paradise. Now, that entire corner is in the real Paradise! not Paradise rd. Like the song that's playing. Miss all the neon, Thanks for sharing. 😇
Landmark was blown up in the movie Mars Attacks. The site is now a parking lot near the convention center. Stardust is now the site of a stalled resort. A friend of mine, who I'll be visiting in a couple weeks, is a native and lives near UNLV. He misses both of these places a lot.
Vegas was once a great place. This is how I remember my first trip to vegas when you got a prime rib dinner for 4.99 and it was good! The old school resturant with the high back booths. The music brings me back to riding around with my uncle back then. Thanks for sharing
I am from Vancouver BC and i am currently on Vacation in Las Vegas and some of these buildings in this video are not here anymore im am staying at Circus Circus
Sahara is now changed to SLS hotel. I remembered about 10 years ago they renovated Sahara, and added a back to back roller coaster. But now it's all gone. I miss the sounds of the coins.
In the mid to late eighties, was living in the condos behind the paddle wheel worked for a time at the paddle wheel casino and the land mark, this video brings me right back to that time like it was yesterday, kind of spooky. Was a non stop party in that area at the time, that was convention center road next street is dessert inn road,it was a care free time, thank you for the memories,it was a very special time and place.
Awww, La Cage at the Riviera!!! That reminds me of the very last family vacation my family ever took, in 2000 (just when I turned "of age" and could be in the casinos with my parents) and we all went to see La Cage at the Riviera together!!! All of us had a blast watching that show. My dad died three years later, then my mom became very ill and I lost her last year. But I do plan on making a return visit to Vegas in the summer and catching the in-residence performance of Jersey Boys because I loved the touring version so much, though I'm not paying the kinds of prices the Paris hotel (where Jersey Boys is performing) demands, nor the kinds of prices the Mandalay Bay (where I'll see Duran Duran in concert the next day) asks for, so I'm staying right next door to the Mandalay Bay at the Luxor (I think that's the hotel?). Anyway, thank you for these videos, and I love how the first song is a Michael McDonald classic I've loved since I was a little girl, a few years before you shot this video!
Nice time capsule you've got here, it's a shame you filmed this at night....makes it difficult to see anything unless it's covered in lights, and the feel good 1980's soundtrack is a nice touch.
@shakedownstreet48 U2 filmed "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" downtown in 87' Sots of Fun is gone? The Landmark was the outside of the casino In casino in the drive up scenes. I worked at the Westward Ho, The Sands.
Evil Gopher-- I feel bad for you (although not your fault of course) if your only life experiences were from about 2000 forward. Life in the 1980's in America was awesome. Of course there were problems, no time in history is without them, but people lived and loved more, there was peace and renewed prosperity and it was considered rude to bring politics into a private conversation (gasp!). And the black and white people were not driven apart by the movies and media--all yelling racism--as we are today.
nice video, the westward ho always gets left out, they were known for the foot long hot dogs for like 50cents? or a dollar??? great to see the good old days. I also stayed at the Rivera and westward ho. Fantastic video even tho you double taped over it lol
Was it in the 80s the same like nowadays, every Hotel contains a "dance-club" (disco) or "nightclub" (no idea how you call it) ? I was there in 2013 and every Hotel got it's own dance-club, for example the "MGM-Grand had the "Hakkasan"
Certainly not. Prior to about 1995, Las Vegas was a very different place than it is today. Back then all of the strip properties had "lounges" and several restaurants, but there were few, if any, "nightclubs". There were several club-type bars away from the hotels, but you could get in for free (or tip) and EVERYTHING was much cheaper! I remember getting a 16oz NY Strip steak with sides/salad for $4.95. Even though the Vegas of today appears higher class, things were actually more sophisticated in the years before '94-'95. Vegas ruined itself (as all places do) when they started catering to the 21-35 year old crowd.
@CrocDoc1 Thanks for your answer! But was the Vegas prior the mid-90s only a gambling and eating place with a few bars? I'm very interested in that topic and, I would be very happy, if you could describe me an usual prior-90s-Vegas-night from your experiences.
Tom Lindstrøm Actually sounds kind of neat...I miss the old Vegas. Email me privately and we can talk. My address is "pneesman" at Yahoo, dot com. Thanks.
Tom Lindstrøm Tom, sorry about the email problem. I simply mixed up the end; try emailing me at "pneesman" at "gmail" dot com. UA-cam does not let write it out as an address should look. Sorry again! Pete
@mapleblackdrums Ya U2 filmed it after there show at Thomas And Mac that night, my next job was at The Union Plaza downtown. I can;t wait for my house to sell so i can move back to Vegas.
Thanks for the upload. Music and time era, just priceless. Will never forget that great passed time........
This video is so nostalgic. I was born the year after this but it felt like a magical time. And you have almost paradise playing in the background. Perfect.
Fun fact: We can bring back these magical times by re-electing Trump and a full republican congress in 2024!
@@danielchristopher3318 100% agree 💪🇺🇸
Classic Las Vegas lights and those ‘87 radio hits!!
Yes.

if i could time travel. i would go back to 1987 in the flamingo hotel.

Las Vegas is always evolving into taller and modern buildings. Love the new Las Vegas.
Probably like the old videos from Seattle & Spokane on Highway videos from that era...

1987, my first time in Las Vegas; stayed at the El Rancho. This brought back a lot of memories.
I was working at the Paddle Wheel in 1987. Cooked those crab Legs and Ribs.
Slots of Fun used to drink there. All these places are gone now.
Great footage. Love how the trek starts with the PaddleWheel and the great Landmark tower. That entire stretch of Convention Center drive heading west to the strip has transformed over the years.

I was 15 in 87.. i use to go with my grandparents to vegas those years.. I miss them so much

Damn, I can smell 1987 in this loop!
Sahara is now changed to SLS hotel. I remembered about 10 years ago they renovated Sahara, and added a back to back roller coaster. But now it's all gone.
I miss the sounds of the coins.
Good. Music there. Playing.
The sound effects are a huge part of the fun.
1987 i was seven years old and living in Sundance Village Apartments on Charleston and Scholl, attending Rose Warren elementary.

My one and only time to Vegas was Jan 1987.
wow almost 35 years ago, the vegas now does not look like the vegas from 1987. I prefer the old vegas to be honest.
Nice time capsule you've got here, it's a shame you filmed this at night....makes it difficult to see anything unless it's covered in lights, and the feel good 1980's soundtrack is a nice touch.
They started half way down the strip....cool video brings back memories....nice sound track too
Great video! Reminds me of my grandpa when i was a kid
@shakedownstreet48
U2 filmed "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" downtown in 87' Sots of Fun is gone? The Landmark was the outside of the casino In casino in the drive up scenes. I worked at the Westward Ho, The Sands.
i was born 1987 my dad was working at the circus circus and still works there to this day
Nice background music.
I remember the days they were building treasure island casino and staying at mom or going to New York New York after the roller coster. Good times
They missed the trop...the desert inn....the frontier....the dunes...the marina....Ballys .....barbary coast.....the Hilton and the flamingo hlilton
Ding ding ding chimes the turn signal on the Buick Rivera. Doesn't seem that long ago....
Murphy Padgett original messed up touch screen control. You had to switch from Air conditioning to radio to change volume on CRT.
I often feel life dealt me the worst hand because I wasn't around to experience the 1980s

nice video, the westward ho always gets left out, they were known for the foot long hot dogs for like 50cents? or a dollar??? great to see the good old days. I also stayed at the Rivera and westward ho. Fantastic video even tho you double taped over it lol
At the Westward Ho it was "Jumbo Hotdog and a Beer for $1"
