Perhaps it would tell you more about Elvis because he could have gotten an exemption from the draft and refused. He did his service. He grew up in a black community, went to a black church - sang in the choir. A lot more to him than people now don't know.

Elvis served in the army, after being drafted. He could have served in Special Service entertaining troops, but chose to serve as a regular soldier, because he thought it was the right thing to do, and knew he would be viewed badly if he took the easier assignment.

This was written specifically for Elvis for this show using feelings he'd expressed in the lyrics. Elvis greatly admired MLK and this was a reaction to everything goung on at the time. MLK's assassination, Vietnam, racial tensions..then Robert Kennedy was assassinated not too long before the show just like his brother, JFK, had been 5 years before. Elvis just wanted everyone to love each other and live in peace.

Thanks for doing this you know that Elvis was also an Army Veteran, who was drafted in the height of his career, and could have pulled strings but went on to "be like everybody else". When he returned from Germany he was just as popular, even more so. He was a patriot and loved everyone. I applaud you for serving our great country and I appreciate you giving Elvis a chance. Be Blessed.

THANK YOU for your SERVICE. THIS right here is a HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. Should be played in every US history course in the world to represent our 1960s era. No better attraction or document or performance exists that covers so much in so little time. Elvis is talking about the public assassinations of Robert Kennedy and MLK. He's speaking of the Vietnam War. The 60s was a BEAUTIFUL DECADE. One of the very last decades of peaceful times and Mom & Pop shops in many neighborhoods around the nation. However, it was also a time of the creation of the modern problems. Elvis was a legit REBEL who was a strong supporter of the youth revolution of the 1950s and Civil Rights movement of the 1960s.

The song was a plea for peace and understanding, written specifically for Elvis to be the last song of the special. During the taping of the show, RFK was assassinated and Elvis and the crew were devastated, especially because of the earlier assassination of MLK. Steve Binder asked the song writers to write a song that expressed how Elvis felt about these events and this song is the result. You can tell Elvis was passionate in his singing of this song. And yes, Elvis was a gifted, musical genius. His voice was one of a kind, never anyone like him.

Elvis didn't write any of his own songs but this song specifically written for him for the 68 Special Steve Binder the directer of the show told the writer about the time he spent with Elvis and how Martin Luther Kings Death, JFKs death and Bobby Kennedys death and Vietnam and Civil Rights affected him so this song was written for him to sing instead of a Christmas song.

What people, nowadays don’t know or understand, Elvis was good friends with MLK, Jr. He was very connected to the civil rights movement and Dr. King’s vision of what America could be. Elvis was much more of a man than most people gave him credit for.

Every word of your reaction is so true. It’s great to watch the dawning realisation in your eyes that there is more to Elvis than the caricature of the man often portrayed by media. Elvis always sang with his heart and soul. This song expressed Elvis’s heart. Also, just so you know, he wore that red scarf to represent all the soldiers fighting in Vietnam. Also, you may not know that Elvis was also a Veteran, having served in the US Army in a tank division for 2 years over in Germany from 1958 to 1960. Thank you for your service. Please do more Elvis. I think you’d like “ In the Ghetto” and “ American Trilogy” too. 👌💕🕺

Elvis was devastated by the assassination of MLK. He was killed a few miles from Graceland.
He asked for this song to be written to honor Dr. King.
By the time that the special aired Senator Robert Kennedy was also slain while he was running for President.
On a side note that's why candidates running for President are now protected by Secret Service.
They were two of the biggest warriors for civil rights along with President Kennedy was killed in 1963.
It was reported the Elvis knew both Bobby Kennedy and MLK personally.
He was told to not do this song to close out the special but he did it anyway.
He poured his soul out and every ounce of physical strength he had.
It was reported that after this song he quickly exited and went to his dressing room and collapsed while weeping.
If you are curious about Elvis the man watch the video Elvis and the Black Community.

BRO, Watched your vid this evening. Thanks for adding this ELVIS song. I might be Minnesota's biggest ELVIS fan! I've played and sung in bands, plus when asked, provide special music for special occasions.
Just about every time I do sing somewhere, people come up to me, and say you sound just like ELVIS. Nothing could be farther from the truth, but maybe the resemblance is because just as a little kid I could imitate just about anything.
Anyway just saying I love music. If you might consider reacting to more ELVIS, that'll be beneficial to your Channel since there's a zillion fans like me that would Subscribe to you.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Although the songs writer, Earl Brown, leaned on MLKs' "I Have A Dream" speech that he gave at the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC in 1963, the REASON for Elvis ending his special runs much deeper. You are correct, 1968 was a mess! Civil rights protests and riots, entire neighborhoods burned to the ground, Vietnam protesters marching in the streets as well, being beat up by cops with clubs, Nightly News broadcasting 'body bag counts' from Vietnam, MLK being assassinated just miles from Presleys home in Memphis, TN in late April, Robert Kennedy assassinated in early June in California and this special was taped June 27th. I almost forgot, The Vietcong had made a surprise attack on their holiday in early 1968 and successfully occupied every major city in Vietnam which completely made President Johnson and the military look like fools! Walter Cronkite announced on his news show that he believed that the war in Vietnam was now not winnable! That just threw fuel on the fire of discontent!. Yes sir, 1968 was a damn mess! This song is the closest Elvis ever came to making a political statement, much to his managers disapproval, but he did it anyway!

New subscriber. BACKGROUND INFO ON THIS SONG: As per Steve Binder who was the producer-director of the '68 special, Elvis, Binder & others w-them were together in the studio when they heard noise coming from the TV in the next room; it was the TV news broadcast that Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated. Binder, Elvis, et al sat up until about 4 a.m. talking about the turmoil in the world at that time w-Elvis expressing his thoughts & feelings, also the assassination of Pres. Kennedy & Vietnam. Binder asked songwriter Walter Earl Brown to compose a song based on those discussions. The song is notable for its similarities to Martin Luther King’s wish for a world of peace and harmony. The red tie was for the blood shed in Vietnam. See the video "Graceland: Secrets of the '68 Special" ua-cam.com/video/IZuVaRJZwcY/v-deo.html for the story of the '68 special, + all the other Binder video interviews regarding the culmination of the song & the entire special. (put in Steve Binder's name & it will come up w-many interviews, one being ua-cam.com/video/KJI6NnbQ8Xc/v-deo.html). Steve Binder is one of the most ethical, upstanding people in the business who now at age 90 can consistently relate what it took to put the entire special together, while going against what Elvis' manager Tom Parker wanted. Thank you.

Honey you are saying there is no racism & our generations had nothing to do with it, however, I assume you must be talking about SLAVERY, not racism. Sadly, racism is alive & well in the USA. In some ways we have improved & in other ways, failed spectacularly. ~ Anyway, they called Elvis 'the King' for a reason. He was special. And for a song that reminds you to follow your dreams etc. check out a song by Cody Johnson called 'Till you can't'. Great song.
