I was 30 when I got back into fishing. Did some when younger at our farm pond. 56 now. Self taught on how to use a bait caster before any UA-cam and a spinning rod. and have been picking out backlashes for 26 years. Only had 2 or 3 that had to be cut out. Right before this video was one saying this method has the potential to kink the u-bend where it is overlapped and causing the “knot”. Thus causing line breaking when tugging on a hangup or worse yet a large fish. If it worked for you , great. I always viewed it as more zen time.
I am 14 and got really into fishing this past year bc my grandpa started taking me. Got my first bait caster today bc that’s what all of the pros use😂. I backlashes on the first cast. Thank you for this video
This is my first time using a bait casting reel since I was a teenager (72 now) and found your video very informative and it just might make fishing with a bait caster pleasant. I plan on taking a spinning reel and a bait caster with me until I get use to my new Pinnacle MSX100.
Ok...talked me into it. I am going out tomorrow to get a baitcaster.....my first. I tangled up all of my friend's reels. I need more toys to add to my new Hobie Pro Angler retired fishing hobby. I think I am ready for something other than a spinning reel. We shall see. ;-)
Hey man I took a new baitcaster out for the first time today and got some birds nests, one of which I thought was the end of my day. Your method saved me. Thanks very much for the help.
That "Fishing can be fun - I promise" killed it :D Been fishing for 25 years now and after buying my first kayak I wanted to try out a baitcaster. Your videos are an enormous help. Thanks from Germany :)
Just had my first backlash after about 30 casts on my new reel. Settings were all good, I side arm cast and my lure hit some tall grass. I started picking and picking. Finally I sat it down, pulled out my spinning reel. Thank you for the video, definitely going to try this!!
Its because ypur not reeling a knot tighter, your tightening the loose line underneath which is why its all knotted in the first place. The line further down thw spool has came loose and is getting caught in the line closer to the bait.
I took a small screwdriver ground end like a point bent gently 90 degrees than I find each small loop of string and pull each loop out toward top of reel. This has worked 100 percent of the time for last 10 years. Good fishing. Tom'
Don't forget, you have to crank your drag up to its maximum, or else you won't be able to turn the reel handle enough to rotate the spool while you're applying the thumb pressure.
Thanks Josh, I heard about that method some years back but was not positive how to do it. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. You can't drive me crazy, I am already there!!! But you already knew that!
Thank you. That's really impressive. Knowing that 40 years ago would have saved me MANY hours on the bank picking out knots! FYI, you're disengaging the reel when you put it in free spool. You're engaging when you reel in.
I have been doing this 2 years now and it does work most of the time but there will be some times where it wont work. Very good tip for the guys that don't know how to do this yet.
What a great tip, that's why I watch these videos, to learn stuff like this. I don't need to watch a pro pull in 25 fish, I can do that, I need to know how better to fish and some of the little tricks of the trade that make fishing more fun for me (pulling in 25 fish or UN-tangling a birds nest in a few minutes). You just got a new subscriber.
Thank you so much for this simplified and easy to understand tutorial playlist. I watched all 7 videos. The last time I was fishing was over 40 years ago, and that was with spinning reels. Now that I live by the sea on the other side of the world, I decided I would like to go fishing again and teach my daughter (5) as well. I just built a small boat, so I ordered rod and casting reel. Thank you again. Pascal
Thanks, I had almost given up and cut the dam line off, started over. I have learned to hate these reels, but you are helping me with understanding how they work.
Hey thanks man for that trick! I'm 67 and have always fished with my good ole Mitchell 300 I got when I was a kid, but I ordered my 1st baitcaster and have taken in all these vids to teach this old dog or fisherman new tricks! Thanks again for sharing! I just subscribed to your channel, looks like I can still learn a lot!
@@Saltyscales maybe you could help me with something if you don't mind? For the last few days, my reel is chewing up my line big time, but I've not had any major backlash moments to cause it from my point of view. I'm using brand new 12 lbs test on just a basic Abu Garcia reel. I'll get like 30 - 50 casts in and I'll have 3 or 4 ends of line popping up from the inside of the spool, any advice if I made sense with that..?
Tks for this video..really helped..also Tks for the video on fine tuning a bait caster..I am new to using a bait caster...I've watched several videos on using a bait caster but yours was the best..After watching the video I went fishing and had very few crows nests..Tks again..
I don't have a spin caster for this reason. I got one as a present years ago and the first five times it rats-nested and I've never gone back to it or thought of buying one because I'm so afraid of ruining my fishing trip
This technique won't work for all applications. It works best for mono or fluorocarbon but won't work for braid. The reason it works best for fluorocarbon and mono is that you get a birdnest where it's not tangled up but just lifted off the spool vs a true birdnest where the line is interwind and tangled up. Hope this helps some what.
Yea, open the side plate, then pick the crap out of it until it loops back under the old loops, great way to cut off and waste half the line from the spool, been there done that lol
Very comprehensive. Been bass fishing for almost three years and using a bait after for Me is VERY intimidating!!! I'm looking into baitcasters now tho. Thanks. Good video without getting all complicated
I do ok but trying to get bites from bigger fish. I want to do a channel from a novice point of view. Learning as a post videos of my trips through the seasons. Peace.
Just watched your tuning video then this one and I learned more useful information from you in about 15 minutes than I have in weeks of researching baitcasters. Thank you for the videos and keep 'em comin'. Tight Lines. Subbed and thumbed up.
Besides this past weekend with my buddy, it's been about 10 years since I've been fishing. Always used a closed face reel. Well I accidentally ordered a baitcaster, not knowing there would be a huge difference. He gave me so much crap about it, saying he can't use them, they birdnest, I'll throw it in the lake, yadayadayada. So here I am, learning everything I can to prove him wrong. Thank you very much for this Playlist lol
Thanks for the video. I just bought my first baitcaster after 30 years of using spinning reels! I'm doing as much planning and research as possible before I start using it.
this is david i love fishing but im an old school fishin hand.i spent most of this morning untangleing my baitcaster i was ready to throw both of them in the water and go back to zebco 33 old faithful and reliable, but this old dog was just taught a new trick so im going to try it again,i appreciate the backlash schoolin
Just want to say, I've watched this video, your video on baitcasting for beginners and your how to tune a baitcaster. I bought one just yesterday because I know they are great for casting both far and accurately, haven't gotten to use it yet, but hopefully I don't have any hard blunders after watching these. Appreciate the tips boss
Thanks I will try that the next time instead of spending most of my time cussing and trying to pick the birds nest out. I need to see the fine tuning video again it might help. Lord knows I can use all the help I can get.
This is the best way I have seen and I can say it sure works! First time out with the new real I was ready to give up and return it. Se this video and decided to go out and try again. Not only did I get less nesting because I also did the fine tuning, but when I did get a nest I could resolve it in a few seconds and keep fishing! Nice work guys. Tight lines!
I know I’m years late but when you said “that’s something Chris would do” I laughed because I thought of myself 😭 but I thank you for the lessons I’ve watched so far. I’m about to start my fishing journey.
Check out this video on how to fine tune your bait casting reel: ua-cam.com/video/w9FFSLF_nak/v-deo.html
Thank you do very much.
Thanks a lot, I was what you would call a loop picker, the thumb pressure helped alot.
Hell, I got a backlash on the toilet paper roll this morning!
Bro it gives less time to wipe better watch this video closely
I do that on porpoise to mess with people
😂😂
Man. Just got home from fishing. Hell of a backlash and just left. This comment cheered me right back up. 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I 💞 IT
Great tip. When I saw the title of the video I thought "yeah right". Boy, was I shocked.
It works David, I wouldn't troll you. ;)
Dude! I've been pulling out knots for twenty years! Thanks for the tip!!!
You're welcome Jesse
Same here man. Jesus Christ I would have paid 100 bucks for that knowledge.
I’m a new fisherman at the age of 25 lol but this is awesome thank you !

That's usually how fishing goes....
Usually after planning a big fishing day, it goes terrible after first cast for me. Lol!
Most useful fishing tip I've ever seen on UA-cam. Thanks
I appreciate that and you are welcome!
Holy hell. I had no idea that was a thing! My mind went to "why the hell would you reel the knot?!!".
