This comment section is going to be toasty but JB… if you read this know that as someone who is new to the VC content, I’ve watched all of the impossible routes because of the combo of personalities present. They’re my favorite VC videos. You guys balance each other well and are very different people. It creates a really great theater for storytelling.
VC, I hope that you talked to JB before posting this and reviewed what you talked about here with him… the fans in the comment section so far seem like they’re being negative towards JB and that’s not super fair to him. I don’t believe that was your intention but please be careful not to turn the audience against JB… You are an incredible story teller, and videographer.
Both guys: I work with middle school students and I am constantly dealing with their drama… there’s a strange thing that when you spend too much time with someone you end up being in conflict by day two or three. Add in the exhaustion of your efforts and the fact that things didn’t go to plan conflict is inevitable. Just remember at the end of the day you, as people, matter so much more than the content produced and the money that is made.

Totally understand that, I was very careful with my “rant” and to not just vent 3 years of frustration on UA-cam. But the tension needed some reasoning and context, as for most of this series, I just looked like an asshole to JB.
I’ve praised JB multiple times in this series and publicly and in private conversations. I’ve always made sure to give him as much of the light as possible and to never put him down. It did spill over a tiny bit in this but that to keep, was the story to be told.
I love JB, I always will.

The dynamic would be lame if it was JB squared or VC squared. I fully expect things to be salty between the both of them because they are different and they spend a TON of time together. The differences between the accomplished racer and the accomplished vlogger are what make it interesting. Keep the dynamic duo going. Thanks @vc adventures for the honest inner monologue.

I could really sense the tension between you and JB in this mini series. I doubt he didn’t put effort into planning. Sometimes people give 80% thinking 80% is enough, and then come to find that didn’t cut it. It’s a learning experience. I’m sure next time he’ll approach it differently. Also it seems like you are an Uber competitive person, and JB being faster than you in most cases grinds your gears. I get frenemy vibes. I hope you guys work through that and keep making these films though!

Tyler, you probably don't remember, but you and I chatted for a minute at Sea Otter registration, both of us picking up our race (you)/ride (me) tags. Then, I really just wanted to thank you for the content over the years and get out of your hair, but you took a couple beats more to express how much the content you produce, and the community that supports you, mean to you. I was impressed by the kindness then. Now to hear all the $hiznit you were dealing with just to make it to the start line and still took the time!?!? Hero-level stuff!! Now back to work...

7 ep mini series is the best format. 20min every day makes me wanting more. Who has time for an hour vid? Now just add cliffhangers at the end. You could reedit old videos and release one part a day and I'd re-watch.

Jeremiah's channel and the content he makes is also quite good on the whole. His role now is an ambassador for the sport as much as a competitive racer, and he does that at an elite level that only a handful of (retired) pros do. (e.g. Gaimon). I like the VCs voice and the character you create (via your editing, as explained here). But I honestly like Jeremiah's cinematic persona and voice too and will watch anything he posts.

This seven part series was the way to go. I really hope you guys make more of these. Spending as much time as you two do while riding as hard as you do makes for a stressed dynamic for sure, but that's the beauty of life. You can't always have thing go perfectly. In fact, nothing seldom goes as planned. It's how you handle the bumps life deals you. JB and you have an amazing thing going. Enjoy the ride fellahs.

JB just needs to accept that he's the better rider and he's the pro so he should be. More people can relate to VC as an a semi-regular dude which will drive the accolade. What JB does is impressive, just not as impressive as a regular guy doing the same thing.

Sad to hear Jables getting bummed out about not getting the love that you get. You guys are great together and it's wonderful to hear how important he is to you. I suppose it's hard to contextualise when you've been making all this amazing stuff together, but the thing is you have YEEEEEEEEEEEEEARS of content behind you and the community that you built with it - many of us are just more invested in your personal story because we've spent the time with it, seen you change over the years. I been watching since you were racing crits! CRITS, dude!
Also, if you're "Mr. Shitshow" and JB is Captain Amazing, i'm gonna be more moved by your successes because i'm more familiar with your struggle. It might seem counterintuitive but perhaps in the future you could focus a bit more on what he finds hard?
I hope he understands...and i know things get blown way out of proportion in the middle of huge rides like that, no one is their normal selves when fatigued and under pressure. I'm glad you squashed it, and hope you guys have a better time of it in the future!
Much love to you both, as always!

Great series. I feel for JB, based on what you said in this video, but I imagine he also knows that your following isn't based on how fast you ride your bike, but more the heart you put into everything you do. And JB should also realizes that he brings much more to the table than riding a bike fast. And hopefully he will become more comfortable with vulnerability and share more of himself as these videos continue.

Partnerships are tough and there are ebbs and flows. Music is great not because all instruments are playing in unison, it’s great because they’re playing different notes together, making harmony. JB and Tyler forever ❤ you guys did the Death Valley impossible route and literally hiked your bike through cacti… kindred spirits after that. Tyler and JB SPEAK YOUR LIVES JB ESPECIALLY. . . You don’t get this tough and great without being interesting… i feel like we never scratched the surface of some epic origin stories. I bet you guys think about your life and how it shaped you a lot, especially on these long rides, people will get inspired by that, people can relate to that. JB not a lot of people can relate to being as great of cyclist as you, cause ain’t that many people that are great, but a lot of people can relate to a story. Also JB I know you would never complain about a thing, but speaking your life and emotion isn’t complaining when you do it with strength and courage.

I've been thinking about this for a bit as it resonated with me. When I created a startup with some friends almost a decade ago - arguments over who did what and who said what would always come up, and sometimes they would really strain the relationship between us. What I've learned over the years of managing teams and companies is that trying to grind out work for an extended period of time is just not sustainable and almost always leads to burn out. The insidious thing about burnout is that you don't know you've hit it until you really hit it, and its super hard to recover. Sort of like mentally bonking. Whats going on here seems to be the result of grinding out such high quality content at such a prolific pace.
At the end of the day - we as your audience are tuning in to watch you and here your story. We're not tuning in for the editing and slick production. I don't know what goes into doing all that - but maybe looking at ways of reducing that burden so the two of you can focus more on the adventure could help ease the feelings of minor resentment or anoyance. Those feelings, by the way, won't go away and will continuously build until the root cause is addressed.

VC/JB, to follow-up on your delicate explanation near the end of the video, I think it’s important to note that you two are definitely not *doing the same thing*. Yeah, sure, you’re both riding bikes. But VC, you are also being a cycling ambassador through your social platform. That’s where the attention differential comes from. JB is the superior cyclist, sure, but that’s not what the attention economy demands in this context. From the comfort and protection of my couch over here, I feel like a mutual understanding of that difference should help smooth the way forward, assuming that’s the goal. I sure hope it is!

I have so much to say about this. I commented in an earlier video that JB seemed over it and the whole thing seemed awkward. So I appreciate the quasi explanation and sharing of some of the backstory at the same time wondering if it was appropriate. I’m going to echo other comments saying I hope you cleared this with JB before posting. He’s so reserved I’m surprised that he would be upset that he is not getting more “light.” It’s clear that he’s the elite athlete and that’s his part of this. You are the “personality” if you will. Like many these are my favorite videos of yours and I hope you guys can make it work.

It would be awesome to see more commentary from JB during his race but lets face it...he is competing and still has that killer instinct. Just come up with the smallest dual camera set up you can off the stem. One under the computer and one just out front of it pointing back to him. Gotta be something small enough to pull this off with a little 3d printing and a garmin mount. Then just let JB do behind the scenes commentary later. You could sense the tension building up with JB the better and better VC got with his riding. JB needs to realize we watch this channel because VC is entertaining, and we like the dynamic between the two of them during these projects. JB should look at his own personality, character and video editing skills in the mirror and see the reason he doesn't have nearly as many subs as Tyler. We don't watch this channel because of Tyler's bike skills, we watch because he's a great storyteller, film maker, and even better person. Jeremiah is becoming more and more "get off my lawn" every video.

Tyler, you are the reason I love your content. Not only are you the creative, but, you are the story. You. You personally are relatable, funny, neurotic as fuck (a good thing), and your personality is wonderful. I disagree with your thesis regarding JB. You essentially say, well, JB has the pro engine, he’s the X world class racer, so he should be the focus. This could not be furthest from the truth. No one cares about his pro engine. This is story telling and you are the interesting and exciting party to watch. Your journey in life is super inspiring. For example, the country turned against Armstrong, but in my opinion, he is more relevant now because Armstrong has a personality and is interesting to watch and listen too. It’s not because of his world class engine. Lance is a vibrant personality. Listen, just like bike racing, you either have it or you don’t. You either have a likable personality or you don’t. If you change the emphasis, you will lose support. We want to see you. Best to you both.

on a neutral perspective i think tyler seems like he's getting the "love" not because of the screen/narration time, it's because he's more "relatable" so to speak (tho he will definitely drop 99% of his viewers), whereas jb is in the immortal/pro echelon status already- which in our viewer brains are already placed on the best youtube cyclist characters category amongst phil gaimon, andrew feather, ed, etc. there's nothing wrong about it, it's just that we all know JB has nothing left to prove, he's a multiple champ. the amount of people who are also champs that can fully relate to him are under the mercy of diminishing returns. whereas tyler is still finding himself which the rest of us are also trying to achieve.

I think VC and JB get equal love and appreciation in a sense, but JB probably doesn’t hear it as much because his level of talent and accomplishments make him less approachable (my personal interactions with him have been nothing but amazing), but I would assume the average cyclists feels more comfortable talking to VC because even tho he too is an amazing cyclist, he’s consistently been describing himself as an average Joe and his content often invites us to interact with him. But I was able to spend more time with JB at Unbound than Tyler this year, and he in no way carries himself as a celebrity. Both great dudes, and I hope JB feels the love from all of us Impossible Route fans.

Hydro-locking the suspension is something you want to avoid usually but to use that as a means to lockout your rear shock is honestly damn genius.
