    High school and masters swimmer. Have been swimming with rotation and all other technical adjustments I come across to help with efficiency and durability. Over the past year, my lower back has been getting more aggravated, post swim. I’m really excited to see how this addresses my stroke and lower back issues. Thanks @swimvice! You keep to finer points without getting garrulous and your pronounciation is crystal clear, so even non-English speakers like me can easily follow. Hey coach Mandy,
    I want to first off say that I really enjoyed your video and it was really informative! Your channel came up in the videos I might like, and the title of your videos spark my interest. I have recently, as of the last few months, started taking swim lessons with a masters swim coach. He is an outstanding teacher who has help me progress to swimming continuous freestyle laps in a 25-yard pool. If you knew where I started off, you would know that this was a great accomplishment for someone who is 48 years old and hasn't been in a pool since he was 21 years old 😁! Not taking anything away from my coach, but he would always explain to me to reach forward, reach forward, stretch as if someone was pulling me by the hand. Oftentimes he would push my hand down because I was reaching too far up but he never explained to me why. Your video has truly opened my eyes on this fact. I am an analytical person who operates better when I have facts. I have subscribed to your channel and I'm looking forward to further videos and I will definitely be going back to watch your past videos! Thanks again!

    Hi, this is a good explanation.
    I tend to go high but i have a question:
    If you look forward (as you mentioned going high tends to faciltate this)
    i find looking forward i can also keep the legs up and get a good glide? it seems that i create some sort of balance point fwd of the lungs around the sternum?
    But it tends to be alot more tiring than looking straight down with a flat back.
    My question is: is this looking fwd posture a credible way to also swim? i see ian thorpe and other pros adopt this posture.

    • @TheVikingquest
      @TheVikingquest 5 років тому +1

      I look 1 meter (or so) forward. The reason elite swimmers swim like that is because they use much more force on their 6 or even 8 beat kick - which give them a more attack position - without legs sinking.

    • @johnsmith-eu8qv
      @johnsmith-eu8qv 5 років тому +1

      TheVikingquest
      Thanks for that explanation, it explains why i feel more powerful in that looking fwd position. "Greater angle of attack" nice analogy

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  5 років тому +3

      If you’re legs aren’t sinking you are pressing or “leaning” on your sternum. However, looking forward still breaks posture which leads to unnecessary tension in your neck and shoulders. Having a break in posture like this will then lead to swimming from your shoulders versus your core. Posture is the foundation of the stroke so you are able to still maintain balance if you relax. Try it out and let me know how it goes! -Coach Mandy

  • @adamdavis4197
    @adamdavis4197 3 роки тому

    Just watched Grant Hacket, Ian Thorpe, and Sun Yang in underwater videos. Granted, they're doing the 1500, but they clearly are not utilizing this swim downhill approach - and they are/ were, the best in the world. Can someone help explain this?

    • @SWIMVICE
      @SWIMVICE  3 роки тому

      Hi Adam great question. Elite swimmers like Sun Yang press and lean with a slightly downhill extension. Since they are highly skilled swimmers, they are able to utilize their torso and posture to hold and stabilize their body on the surface of the water as shown in this video below:
      ✅ ua-cam.com/video/LJjHyT3Ypy4/v-deo.html
      When someone is learning how to extend properly a common cue is to reach forward. However, what happens 9 times out of 10 is this action is misinterpreted and the reach is over extended causing a swimmers body to lean back adding unnecessary resistance.
      Once you have established proper alignment then the arm can raise higher. The downhill feeling is from the lean off your torso or chest.
      Next time you go to the pool extend to high, then to low, and finish slightly right in the middle and notice how it feels for you. Based on your skill level will determine what feels best. 👍 Enjoy your practice! 🏊‍♂️ Coach Mandy
