  • GM CEO Mary Barra has disclosed plans to eliminate traditional dealerships from the company's sales model, in a groundbreaking announcement that has the potential to revolutionise the automotive retail industry. This ambitious initiative represents a paradigm shift for GM, as it directly challenges the traditional dealership model and embraces a direct-to-consumer strategy. In this eye-opening video, we'll look at the specifics of GM's new approach, including the reasoning behind the decision and the potential repercussions for the automotive industry.
GM's intention to transition away from traditional dealerships is part of a larger drive to streamline the car-buying process and improve the entire customer experience. By eliminating dealerships as middlemen, GM hopes to provide consumers with greater transparency, flexibility, and convenience when purchasing their automobiles. This plan is likely to put GM in direct competition with digital-first automobile makers like Tesla, which has long advocated for a direct-sales approach.
The change to a direct-to-consumer sales approach reflects broader consumer behaviour trends, including a growing preference for online shopping and digital transactions. GM's decision is viewed as a response to shifting consumer expectations, particularly among younger generations who are increasingly familiar with internet shopping and seek a smooth, hassle-free experience. This puts GM in direct rivalry with both traditional automakers and digital disruptors such as Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid Motors.
Furthermore, the removal of traditional dealerships might have a substantial impact on GM's ties with its current dealer network and automotive competitors. While this shift may challenge established dealership business models, it also allows dealers to adapt and evolve their operations in response to evolving consumer preferences. Meanwhile, other automakers may closely follow GM's plan and contemplate making similar changes to their own sales strategies to remain competitive in a quickly changing industry.
Join us as we explore GM CEO Mary Barra's announcement of a future without traditional dealerships, providing insights into what this means for GM, its competitors, and the future of automotive retail.

She should have announced they were dropping prices by more than half, then maybe they could sell some of their over stock.

Dealerships are often what makes purchase of new vehicle a bad experience. Buying straight from factory should have been adapted years ago.

Every new car comes with a robot mechanic in the trunk. Anything goes wrong, you pop the trunk, he jumps out, fixes the car faster than any mechanic ever thought possible.

With the robotics used prices should have come way down. The only thing greed drives is everything goes over the cliff. Ridiculous. Price fairly and everyone will be happy. It is that simple. Oh, and get off the green thing.

Mary Barra should have done this quite some time ago, since the dealers initiated all this with there stupid market markups and unnecessary add ons. GM cars are still stupid expensive and unaffordable.

Dont act like its GM alone. Ford, Stellantis and the rest are just as guilty of price gouging us during the pandemic and want to keep on doing so.

Sounds to be another surprise. Get all the cash upfront from the customer and then the service will milk the customer even more with a crock of crap on when the vehicle will be able to get parts for the warranty repairs. GM quality continues to faulter sliding downhill and customers are showing frustration with longevity of vehicles that are constantly in for major / minor issue. Door will open up for the Japanese and Korean auto manufacturers and eventually the CEO will sellout the workers due to sloppy engineering and expensive long term repairs that currently and in the future will erode GMC customer base. This issues has been eroding away since the female CEO came on board due to she relationship with the democrat party. Eventually China will come in to buy GM out - leaving a dumpster fire for those long term employees and vendors. Look how Chrysler is standing especially after Lee Iacocca stepped down.

Yea right....their fastest sellers and money mass are the full sized trucks. It will take GM decades to change their selling model to a consumer direct model. Are they going to open service centers all over the country?...

"By embracing digital technology (not replying to emails), "enhancing customer experiences" (how?), diversifying their service offerings, (we don't work on that part here) Dealerships can still scrape a little off the top.

Pretty pictures of Mary abound on this vid. She lied like a rug during the faulty ignition switch scandal she was very well aware of. To rehabilitate Mary's image GM donated to diverse charitable organizations. Each org gave Mary an award. GM massively promoted each award. Mary is so pretty - and very well liked!! And respected!
GM pays Mary WAY MORE that any other car maker. Mary's was the last company to agree to worker pay raises. Mary was the last ceo to agree to ending different wage scales for the SAME work. Mary was the last ceo to agree to other worker gains.
but she is pretty and she is award winning!!!

I also see ex sports figures looking to invest in other businesses rather than buying dealerships.

    Digital technology = spyware
Eliminating car dealerships does not reduce GMs carbon footprint.
Those dealerships are independently owned and therefore the carbon footprint belongs to the dealership owner, not GM.
Where does one go to test drive a new auto?

In other words, dealers get screwed. Many deserve it. That said, this commercial says nothing about how vehicles will be bought and serviced. I'm assuming the dealer will still be necessary to fix the damned things, as dealers make the vast majority of profits in the service bay. What a bunch of crap.

Greed, they want all the money for themselves...
Will the vehicles be cheaper since they are cutting out the dealers/truck drivers/maintenance & repair techs and who knows how many other people?
When you have problems who do you take the vehicle to for repairs/recalls?
I won't be buying any GM products in the future that's for sure...

Yeah sure, last week this channel had Ford eliminating all their dealerships. I don't know where this channel comes up with all their nonsense but I'm getting tired of watching these long videos that are all a bunch of bs, they are not even accurate. They also said Ford was going to start making the Capri and the Lincoln Continental and The Ranchero again. Still haven't seen any of that. This channel seems to make something up and then blabber on about it for 15 minutes and it's all a bunch of BS
