- I am not the kind of person that likes to have others do things for me, but sometimes it's best to know when to ask for help! Today I will be doing JUST that!
I have repaired many injection pumps on my own, but I was unsuccessful getting the machine to run properly after all the work I did trying to make it work... so it's time to bring in the professionals!!
Today we're taking the injection pump & injectors from our Perkins 204.25 diesel engine to Area Diesel Service in Carlinville, IL, and they're going to help me figure out what's going on and show me how the PRO's rebuild & tune an injection pump!
If you have a need to have an injection pump rebuild, injectors tested, turbos replaced or rebuilt, or just parts for your diesel project, these are the guys to contact!

Area Diesel Service seems to have a stellar reputation among all these you tube mechanics. I have never heard anyone complain. Impossible to buy this kind of advertising.
L lol klk
Keep the rebuild coming!
Yes. Keep them coming, it's the process that I personally like to watch and you're pretty damn meticulous in all aspects, especially the time you take to frame shots etc.
Ya couldn't have said that any better, I really enjoyed watching him work on equipment. And this is almost kind of like a whodunit mystery trying to suss out what's going on.
Do keep the videos coming, the whole shebang has been interesting, from keeping an eye on framing/angles on the camera, to the methodical and step-by-step progress through the parts as well as your continued comments you give throughout letting us in on your thought-process.
Far too often we get a 15-30min video just showing someone cleaning up parts, painting them and putting them back, here though, it has been a journey.
When you hammer out a gasket, before you do the inside edge, hammer out the bolt holes. Then you can put bolts in them to help hold the gasket material in place to finish removing the excess on the inside. 28 years of experience making them.
Matt, when your running at Idle it runs ok When you run under load/high revs it stalls and is difficult or impossible to start (From what I've seen in your recent videos and it smokes all the time). Here's a suggestion, take the silencer (Or muffler as you guys call them) off the machine and see if it makes a difference. Just as it needs fuel and air in to run it also needs to adequately vent exhaust gas! A blocked exhaust can cause it to be hard to start (more often when it's been run though) and to stall above engine Idle. That's likely the original exhaust, I don't know if it'll be the glass wool type or just the baffle type, but it may well be jammed full of crap from poorly burnt fuel, and the shit that was in the tank. I could be way off, however its a quick and easy thing to check!
Bill, I seen that exact thing happen on an old Caterpillar. Funny as hell is that the guy I saw running the machine ran the piss out of it causing the muffler to get really hot and the black suity garbage came flying right out of it. It ran beautifully after that. Kind of looked like old dried up flakes of black paint.
@@clintkoelbl6481 I had a bitch of a time diagnosing a "Fuel fault" on a machine nearly 40 years ago. After, checking filters, lift pump, Injectors, Injector pump, solenoids, even Fuel lines. I was at a loss. everything told me it should be running. I was in the process of swapping the engine and had removed the exhaust, and that was how I found the cause! a severely restricted silencer/muffler.
I've seen a face-plugged DOC and/or DPF do that a number of times. Both on a Perkins/Cat 4.4 in a backhoe and numerous Kubota/Cat 3.3 and 3.8's in skidsteers.
Same principle.
A muffler obstruction would explain the sudden occurence.
Just a piece of rusted internal muffler part coming loose and wedging itself into the the flow.
Had a similar thing on my gas-powered car, albeit intermittent - something in the rear muffler was loose and from time to time the flow would pick it up and nearly block it. Had to stop (well, with nearly no power it did that by itself), turn the engine off, wait a sec, start again, all was fine, sometimes for a minute, sometimes for days, until I finally replaced the thing.
@@typrus6377 it's one of those things that's easily overlooked. When it puffs smoke you just don't think it's the culprit!
Yes, I enjoyed the video.
Old guys (like me) live vicariously in your videos.
Thanks for the video...
Coming from a 32 yr Heavy Equipment Operator. 90% of the Perkins 4 cylinders I've been around needed glow plugs 60 degrees F and under. Especially with high hours. Excellent Job. Oooo yeah I knew you would have a hard time finding the crank seal. Motion Industries would be your best bet. Peace
That equipment at Diesel Services is something else, they appear to be true specialists. It gets to a point where like you say it would be easier to send it to the scrap yard. But hey that's not in your phsycy, like how your taking a forensic approach to resolving issues. 👍🤗
On these small indirect injection diesels they require the glow plugs to start correctly. Depending on engine temperature they stay on after the starting to aid combustion and to stop smoking for several minutes. Some designs even require glow plugs to start when engine is warm.
Love watching any video you produce, your methodical approach to diagnosis and repair gives me confidence to attempt jobs myself. Keep on producing Matt. Many thanks
Give Area Diesel their due, they are excellent at what they do. Having said that I don't believe very many mechanics have the overall ability to repair all kinds of stuff as you do. You are a true great overall mechanic. Case closed.
Yeah, I enjoy watching you do this stuff. As you know, you're not the only UA-camr featuring restoration of old machinery, some of which is essentially junk. But for some reason I like watching your efforts more than most. Stay after it, man.
Absolutely enjoyed this and previous segment! The boys from Area Diesel earned their "pros from Dover" award on this one. Finding that last sticky piston was key. What you learned from this experience was well spent tuition.
The series are great. More than an hour per video and don't want to end. More like these please. The detail is astonishing.
I like the long format also, it's like setting down and watching a good episode from TV back in the day. Plus theirs little to no commercials, ya can't beat it.
Easiest way to find TDC: using a compression testing thru the glowplug hole, attach a whistle and short hose to the adaptor, turn engine over by hand and you will hear when you get to TDC.
Its an indirect injection engine made by Mazda but used by Perkins so 100% needs those glowplugs to start but only once in the morning from cold, rest of the day they arnt needed. Glowplugs should need glowing for approx 15-20 seconds depending on the voltage stamped into plug body. 450psi compression is very good. Std rule of thumb with glowplug engines is 420-450psi with 300psi minimum and a max variation of 70psi. Pump should still be timed with a proper dial gauge tool. You should help your Fuel shop guys out by telling them to go to Merlin Equipment in the UK and buy their injector pop-tester test pipes. They will never need to use 2 x spanners/wrenches to fasten any injector to the test pipe ever ever again. By using the heatgun into the manifold its telling you it needs those glowplugs to start.
Keep showing all rebuild videos. This is why I watch your channel.
I am writing from distant Poland, from Europe. I watch EVERY video of yours and I am delighted with your commitment, passion for saving old machines and tools, I would do the same if I could. Thank you so much for your persistence and perseverance, I am very impressed. There are few enthusiasts like you on YT. You are fantastic. I've had bad experiences with diesels. I was fixing my Dodge Diesel, massacre! I am cured of diesel engines for life. My engine would shut off while driving whenever it wanted to! And what will you do? It's hard and you won't push the reptile to the side of the road. I sprayed him with autostrat spray in the intake manifold, but it was a chore. I had to be in the cab and the engine is in the front, so how do you do 2 things at once? Press the starter and spray chemistry into the intake? I pulled a flexible aluminum pipe from under the hood, from the air filter to the driver's cabin, and sprayed the chemicals into the pipe with one hand, and pressed the starter with the other. Massacre! I sold this crap. The injectors had play in the sockets in which they are embedded. Once in a while, the injector moved so much that all the compression from the engine went either into the fuel supply channel or into the overflow or fuel return channel. and the fuel lines were immediately empty, contaminated, so the engine stopped. I will never buy a diesel car again!
Sir. Thats not because its a diesel! Every bad piece of equipment.....
Can have these flaws. Njet dobre.
@@henkoosterhof5947 YES, Your`re Right
Props to Area Diesel for letting you video there.
Great vid Matt 👌🏻 👍🏻 👏
Keep them coming.
Happy Easter to you n yours .
One great big word describes you: INDEFATIGABLE.
One who NEVER gives up!
Good job! Two things; If you bleed the fuel completely to the injectors before installing the glow plugs you will save on the cranking system. And these engines need glow plugs operating correctly and NEED to be energized long enough before trying to start. My similar engine needs about a full minute of glow plug before it will start well. Also a working glow plug will help to reduce smoking on start up.
Area Diesel service is an awesome company in my opinion. The smoking issue is probably unburnt fuel from the prior issue and as you mentioned a possibility of the additives that you put in a fuel.
Glow plugs are not just a winter warmer they are vital to the starting of the engine. The glow plug controller should have a thermal sensor on the engine and run the plugs for the appropriate amount of time to ensure that the engine is at the correct temperature to start. Your ignition key switch should be first stage accessories, second stage glow plugs and the third stage is sprung for the starter then back to second stage to run an the plug controller is now of as the engine is a the running temperature. Make sure the plugs shut of if not replace the plug controller. 😀. Have a grate time with her as she is a great peace of equipment. Mark.
When the magic box misbehaves , you definitely need to find a wizard to fix it , lol .
Glad to see the fix worked .
Hey!!! 3 cheers for Area Diesel Service!!! Thanks for sharing this with us. So glad you've met with success on this. I've been confounded a few times... a problem with no explanation that I can find... nor anyone else. It's simply deflating. - So, I'm typing this comment half way thru... but it looks like you found the problem in the glow plug circuit? THIS should be interesting.... Thanks for sharing this in it's entirety... gives us guys without the "iron thumb" a little hope.
Hats off to the guys at Area diesel service and Matt great job never give up
This machine is really giving you a challenge , know one can say , you didn’t go from a-z on troubleshooting. You didn’t throw in the towel, looking forward to the next video, and you finding the problem
I love the series, I'm tired of seeing good equipment go to the scrap yard because they need a little love because of flat out neglect most of the time. And then you buy these new machines and their shit also, so you might as well fix her up. Plus we love watching you do your thing. Keep up the good work and shout out to area diesel service thanks for keeping America running.
I love the rabbit holes you have to go through. I can appreciate it as it seems like I never have an easy fix on things
In my experience those old Diesels like there Glow Plugs .When its even just cool out .Area Diesel Guys are Top Notch for sure .I love it watching this old Iron fixed up and used .Great Video...
Stay on the horse that got you here. Keep going on the Gehlen.
YES. Love watching you take "nothing" and make it work again. Also like the long format. Thanks Matt
I love these skid steer videos. I really enjoyed the one in the barn, and I hope to see that one again soon.
Very thorough , I think I would have just hooked up all 4 glow plugs to 12 volts early on , then see if she will light . But you fixed it correctly that's always the best overall repair . You have a lot of patience , I am sure you did a lot of screaming off camera .
That poor starter is the real mvp. Guy even burnt up the battery cables 😂
Another step closer. Please keep going and videoing the progress on the 'tired' tired skidstear.
Cheers
Michael (from Scotland)
PHUCK WHAT A TENSION!!
I love these videos, the way you record them and the emotion you convey. I was glad that the machine started more than you !!!
Thank you very much for sharing these interventions.
I look forward to each video as my Friday night movie special.
Greetings from a Spanish mechanic.
What I like in your videos is that you never give up the fight ! Thank you for posting these .
I'm a 44 year old female who has never even seen a skid steer in real life. I have NO idea about engines but I absolutely love your videos. I feel confident I could build my own from scratch now lmao just kidding. Keep them coming.
Yes, I do enjoy them. My only issue is going over things too many times. But that is just me. I am sure that others appreciate it. But I do enjoy watching our episodes. Thanks for sharing.
Like many other have posted, yes keep them coming. Your channel is one of the main four I look forward to getting a notification that a new video is posted. Thank you for sharing your grind with us.
Aron, you need the glow plugs. Replace the relay, then with thr circuit on, connect a voltmeter from relay main inlet 12v, to the cable just before glow plug no.1, you are looking for less than 0.5v drop circuit on. If more than that you have a parasitic resistance in the glow circuit (rotten cables, poor joints etc) also do test batt plus to relay power in, then glow 1 to glow4 (should be battery voltage) final test - clues are all over this, starter motor drop test Inc the ground cable connector to the frame. Something is robbing volts buddy. Good luck from UK.
Hello there, I don’t usually comment but you need to know that I throughly enjoy your videos. Know that I’m not alone in my praise of your efforts. Keep em coming!
Best Regards
Fred Thomas in Skokie IL
I love the comment about knowing enough to be dangerous! Sometimes we all have to take a chance with limited knowledge to get the job done.
I LOVE YOUR TENACITY!! Been watching you for years now , when you first got that anvil from a salvage trip to an old garage somewhere. Great content brother!
Idea glow plug switch.... Put a starter button on the panel or whatever easy access for you to push.
Matt…. We don’t come here because we enjoy it, we watch you and join you because we LOVE IT! You have amazing videos and talent and brother keep the vids coming!!!
Yep, good stuff, entertaining, and educational. Thank you!
I have respect for anyone that takes on big equipment as a hobby. It takes a lot of work and patience, as well as money. Maybe I'll get into it one day when I have enough money and space to do it. I've worked on forklifts before, but that is the limit of my big equipment experience. I had to jump in and repair 3 forklifts in a day at a previous job in a time crunch with no help, training, or experience, but I managed to get two of them running. I got lucky.
I came here for your repair vids and I even really liked the garage makeover. So keep them coming.
Since the connectors need replacement anyway, you can save a bit of money and just use a Ford starter solenoid for your glow plug relay. It will easily handle the 40 or 50 amps the glow plugs will draw. If it was me I would also just use a momentary pushbutton for the glow plugs and save the cost of the new ignition switch. You would only have to hold it down for 10 or 15 seconds before turning the key. 🤔
Yes - I'm here to watch you fix these old machines, keep them coming please.
Keep them coming. Great to see you work through the issues in a logical process and get it to run again. Great Job!
Nice that Area Diesel let you video their shop
I always enjoy watching old things brought back to life and used. And anyone an learn by watching and you do a good job saying what your doing and showing it Thank You Stay Safe
*Matt, If I remember correctly, she was running good... UNTIl you gave her a hose down with a water-blaster.... well this is the 'problem', as this ol' gal does NOT like having a hosedown at all.... so next time either give her a gentle bath... and treat her tenderly. But I am so pleased that you got her running again... I have enjoyed this process you have had with this ol' gal.*
Thank you for being your self ,you really gifted and thank you for all your efforts.
I'm in my 70's and yes, I do enjoy watching, bring old equipment back to life is so much fun and it does not have to be engine operated. Will be looking forward to your next one.
You are Welcome Glad you take the time to bring us along
I super enjoyed and enjoy "repair/Troubleshooting engines and equipment in general! Keepup the great work. Show it ALL! They do make tracks for the wheeled machines!
Keep giving this machine the love. It's not perfect, but at least it does work now.
Awesome job, very enjoyable. A lesson in persistence. *** Quitters never win and Winners never quit ***
Thank you matt for your enthusiasm in your commitment to saving this machine. I had a small commercial van 10 years ago and the diesel pump went bad on it and ofcourse I had several experienced mechanics attempt to repair it but unfortunately it was virtually impossible as it had to be repaired by the manufacture who had advised me to buy a complete new one for nearly 14 hundred pounds and that was without the costs of setting up the pump to my engine. Anyway cut a long story short I scrapped the van because it was becoming a expensive vehicle.
Fascinating video's, please keep producing these old machines back from the dead, your knowledge and patience is outstanding
I will probably never own one, but it was a true pleasure watching you go through the process of troubleshooting and finally getting your S.L to run. Loved the videos! Keep moving forward!
I think it's great how You take severely abused and/or abandoned Machines and get them running and repaired. I learn a lot from what You do. Thank-You for Your Channel
Really enjoyed a "behind the scenes" video with the machine shop working on your pup. Very cool
Enjoying the series. Good to be back to mechanical. As a Carpenter I see enough construction. All the air time area diesel service gets from you tubers it pays them to play nice. Lots of cheap advertising. But from all the videos made at their premises they have a very professional set up. And certainly know their stuff. Amazed you got that pump apart and back together in the first place. When you watch what they do with all their facilities. Definitely a job for the specialist.
Keep the videos on old machines coming. Thank you.
maintenance is a hobby for me. I work on, repair, and build all sorts of equipment. you do good work
Well it looks like you got her going again and I don't see any smoke thank you for sharing this with us six stars brother
Great job.If it's got glowplugs it needs them to start, use them,it will save on starter motors!Especially if it's an elderly Perkins.
Great work by yourself and area diesel , thanks for sharing 👌💨💨
Hello from Germany. I like the things you show us in the videos. For me it is important that I can understand your speech without problems. That's not normal for US-guys.
4/9/23; ..success getting Gehl SkidSteer diesel running after Area Diesel Service rebuilt injector pump & 'bump' psi check yur 4 injectors for this Perkins. Celenoid for Glow Plugs next, bracket for oil filter, install air intake mnfld/filters & she will be zooming around pushing/lifting/hauling your next project components! Much enjoy your channel & your incredible patients analyzing the inter-related systems to get these old-but still good- machines working! Appreciate your calm & conversational style while explaining the steps you take to get these engines up & running; also much impressed with your psi gages/adapters/quick coupler fittings...all your pro instruments required to get the job done! All your efforts appreciated! Stay safe & carry on Matt. Another good job!👍👍👍👏✅️🍺😊
Love these repair vids and rebuild vids. As a diesel tech myself it gives me an erg to find some old iron of my own for sure
It wasn't until 3/4 through this video you said you had another machine. I've been watching these thinking this was the one you pulled out of the woods and that I somehow missed you replacing an engine as the other one had almost no compression.
Keep up with the videos. I really enjoy them.
Have a Jesus filled day everyone
Greg in Michigan
Keep the videos coming. Perhaps the combination of treatments you poured in the gas is causing the smoke. Maybe once it’s run through things will clear up.
I love this kind of stuff, and love watching you fix these old machines, it's great.
Matt. This Is my favorite show. I am tremendously impressed with you skill, knowledge, and perseverance. Some time it would be nice for you to share with us how you gained all these skills, work experience. Also like to meet your family, wife, brother, kids, dogs etc.
My favorite vids is going thru and bringing these machines back to a useful state. They dont have to be perfect but functional
Heck yeah, I enjoy watching you work on these. Like watching you figuring things out . Plus I sit here and try to figure it out in my mind. Plus I love seeing old equipment brought back to life.
G'day Matt. Just for future reference. Oil seals, sometimes you can pick out the inside spring out and it can be undone as one end is tapered and screws into the other end. At the open end (not the tapered) cut off about between 16th to 1/8 of an inch to shorten the spring then reinstall it in to the seal. This trick will tighten the seal up. Old bush mechanic's trick. Also re the glow plugs. Get that fixed ASAP. The engine will start easier. That will save draining the battery and over working the starter motor and solenoid as well as the bendix gear and flywheel. Cheers from Down under👍
Well done, Matt!
You’ve gotta show us the next and the next through the bitter end. Good on yuh mate!!
It's true....sometimes you need to walk away, and sometimes you need to tough it out............the tricky part is knowing which one to do! Good job staying with it! DD
In watching you it helps others with similar machines. Thank you for what you do.
I have a Gehl just like that. Rebuilt the injection pump myself. Made a injector tester from an old Porta-power pump.
Oil seal tip, if stuck. Remove spring from the iner seal, twist spring, so it parts. Then cut off 1/4 of an inch off the spring, rejoin, and refit. Hope this helps bry
Love it, keep em coming. Worked with diesels during my career in the Royal Navy on mine hunter. 6 cylinder supercharde perkins and Fodens used to be my daily bread, mainly used as generators. Impressed with your " I'm going to crack this " love your ethics. Thank you
~I really admire your tenacity. Very well done. Iagree that the glow plugs are VERY inportant as I suspect it is an indirect injection engine. They require glows when its cold.
Looking forward to the next one, always happy when I see you have posted a new video. Always quality and pleasure. Thanks
Matt, very glad that you finally got ur 95 Gehl 5625 running, still not all the way right.
Love watching all this old equipment been revived it’s awsome
Yes be nice to see the old girl brought back to new . Please carry on
Love this sort of content from you, we all want to see a full rebuild and paint job and lights and everything lol, keep doing what you do its worth a watch👍🇬🇧
You taught me a lot bud thanks. This is actually one of my dreams is to buy a older skidsteer that's broken down and completely rebuild it. So I can learn all about it. Praying I get to do it before it's too late.
enjoyed very much. fixing junk is my hobby, keep it coming
Hi Matt. Keep"em coming. Your don't-give-up-we-need-to-know attitude is contagious and an example for the rest of lazy tube watchers. Don't know but 10 amps from your small battery charger may not be enough. Try wiring all four glow plugs straight from battery. My 3 cylinder Kubota will not start, even in summer without 14 seconds of glow plug. Another time it would not start because a worn bushing on the starter motor wouldn't spin it fast enough. A starter rebuild later and it started within 1/2 of a turn. All the best Lou Grande
Im glad that you got it started. I check several times a day to see you got a new video up but I know it takes awhile to get them out. No worries.
all I ask is to keep them comming it gives me great joy to see you do the things I can no longer do.
Larry
Gentleman, it is a great honor watching your video, your trouble shooting procedure was s little of from my standard but you got it going, congratulations, most kind of you for sharing it with us, blessings to you and your love ones, from the endless summer paradise Puerto Rico Jesus Torres.
Yes please keep them coming. I have an old New Holland that I am always working on and need all the help I can get. Love watching you.
