Will it RUN? Can we SAVE the old FORD Bucket / Service Truck? ~ 1990 Ford F800 Diesel Truck Rescue
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 вер 2021
- So my friend Mike asked me to help him bring this 1990 Ford F800 back to life. Apparently he acquired it a few years ago, but never got around to moving it, and now the property owners want it gone or they'll end up scrapping it.
We can't let THAT happen, so today's plan is to bring this old truck back to life and see if we can get it out of there!!
It's apparently been sitting there for about 15+ years, so it's bound to have some issues! It's gonna be a good one!
Here we go!!

If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments, please leave them below!

Man I’ve noticed a ton of negative comments on here. I’m a diesel mechanic. Been one for 20 years. I’ve also been where I’ve had to work on something with limited tools and service data and had to figure out a way, any way, to achieve the goal. You got the truck running. You got it moved. Good job. Period. Most people wouldn’t even try. Don’t listen to the negativity. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Mike! I truly appreciate that!
I agree 100% Mike. All they're trying to do is get the damn thing started and moved. They finally did it. Who gives his crap how they did it.
Don’t worry when you do get it usefully serviceable, the same creeps will be complaining that’s it’s not battery electric.
Honestly I could watch salvage workshop videos every day hes saving older equipment that had plenty of life left in them which otherwise would be scrapped, it's clear to everyone who's watched him working on some of the things that he loves every second of what he does honestly I cant wait for his next video then the video after that and so on
Yep, in a fully sorted shop, these methods seem barbaric. But in the wild with limited tools, a lot of school trained mechanics would have never got this old girl going.
Just another reason to love the trucks and equipment made in the US
Few things about running a bucket truck of that kind if you have future plans. Old rusty outriggers? Wire wheel the outrigger legs clean to bare metal, grease them. The side you put down first should be the side you pick up last, this helps on an old rig. Outriggers when truck is on a slope? Level the truck first with the downhill side outriggers then put down the up hill side. In most cases outriggers do not need much more than ground contact, no need to push down hard unless soft ground or leveling. This will prevent the outriggers from getting stuck. Pushing down hard to do what you did was fine though. Do not try leveling technique if truck is sloped front to back, always best to keep tires firmly on the ground when in the bucket.
And that style of boom, not my favorite but still fine. Use the lower controls to run the boom before flying in it yourself to see if it’s safe. Most important test is bringing the upper boom over center, they have been known to drop, keep clear. You probably won’t be flying in that Bucket soon anyways hahaha.
ABSOLUTELY, DO NOT, lift 2,000 lbs with that jib, even though it says 2,000lbs on the chart. I run brand new versions of this truck and our maximum worst case emergency lift we do is 1,400lbs. I’d be surprised if the brake on that jib winch holds 1,000lbs. 1,000 lbs is the most you should lift with that in good condition. We’ve had guys who have lifted 1,600 lbs on the jib and they admitted they would never ever try it again. Another known thing to watch out for in the world of bucket trucks is any boom with steel cables for bucket leveling. Note the condition of the steel cables before flying in it as the cables have been known to let go, dump the bucket over and the guy flying in it.
Wrote this just in case you do decide to operate it further
This is some sage advice. I worked in the periphery of a tree business for years and many bad things can happen when outriggers and lifting cables are in the mix. As soon as I saw that winch I was thinking I wouldn’t try lifting more than 500 pounds in its current state. Then he read that label and I’m like “Nope”! Hope they take your advice and do things incrementally. 🤞
Out of curiosity, is this thing seriously made to be used to lift something while somebody is in the bucket? I could understand a combo, lifting from the ground with nobody in the bucket, or using it as a bucket truck, but lifting with somebody in there?
@@timderks5960 yup! The boom is called a “material handler” and is made to lift things while there is someone in the bucket. But you do not have to be in the bucket to do so, there are both lower and upper controls.
And on a further note, especially with a well aged bucket you should definitely wear a harness. Unfortunately your harness lanyard will get hooked to a ring attached to the bucket from the factory. The thing with your bucket is that the bucket is on the same spindle as the jib. If the spindle is at all comprised and in the very unlikely event the spindle brakes off, you will go down with the jib and the bucket. You will be miles ahead in the safe direction if you attach a d ring to the end of the boom to hook your lanyard to so if the bucket does fall off you are hooked to the boom
Helpful comment. I like reading what the pros write.
Love your videos and can do attitude. Don't worry about the "I know better" comments, you are out there doing stuff and helping out your buddy. They are sitting at their keyboard complaining how others do stuff they can't or won't do.
Love this channel. Two thumbs up! 👍 👍
I love your channel and personality. You’re a great and fun presenter. Keep up the good work and don’t listen to the negative people. Delete them.
That 7.8 is bullet proof. We ran them for years in power line equipment. I think the first thing I would have done would replace the fuel filters and properly bled the system, put good batteries in. Could have saved you some time.just sayen.
Those Brazilian built 7.8 engines could practically run on sand. Merlin Marine was pulling over 1,000 hp out of them for boat racing applications. It was originally in the Ford Cargo low COE mated to a short throw 5 speed that felt more like driving a car than a truck. Hard to kill those little 6s and they’re just a rock solid powerplant.
There is SO much expression in mikes face. He has such a quiet voice. I would love to sit and BS him and plumb his memories. Ten thousand thumbs up to you guys. It looks like you made a friend for life!
That's a sweet truck!!! haven't watched the whole thing yet but I hope you got a good deal on it!
You know you wanna buy it Matt! Shame they already got it running otherwise it'd have been a dead cert... Hope things are coming along OK after the flood & you didn't lose too much in the way of equipment/tools.
Love when I see a comment from on of the UA-cam channels I watch commenting on another one I love :)
Hey Matt, I gave you a shout out on another comment. You guys both amaze this old man. I'm glad that you know each other.
you need to buy this truck, restore it, convert the lift to a crane, and use it for your revivals
Love how these old seemingly junk vehicles jump back to life. Great work as always!
It’s always intriguing how these types of vehicles becomes “ old and broken” due to the lack of basic maintenance. With.
Mike I do want to tell you how much I enjoy your Channel. I also appreciate the fact that you find these old broken equipment remodeled them and get them functioning and working well. I think society is so busy thinking about the next new thing that they forget about a lot of the old equipment works just as well if kept in good running order. Keep up the good work I'm enjoying it so much! .M.A
Thanks for sharing your adventures!🤗🤗🤗
Thanks for the video. I truly appreciate the hard work and ingenuity you have when bringing old iron back to life.
Gotta be rewarding when they finally fire off and you hear that ole diesel rattling. Good work!
I'm glad you're back, miss your doggies.
That feller needs to take it easy on that starting fluid trigger finger. I don’t know a ton about diesels but I do know that either is not a good thing for them.
Before any keyboard warriors comment that Salvage Workshop should have done this or that please remember this lovely piece of old iron was heading to the scrapper...and they saved it! I thank you guys for saving this wonderful old Ford that has plenty of life left in her from an undeserved fate and for brining us along for the ride. 👍
Wow, service truck and a man lift and a crane in one, would love this thing so much. I also like how the oldtimer avoids showing the plumbers smile... need a pair of these suspenders myself.
Really enjoy your channel and so happy to see some new content. Fantastic to see you helping out Mike get that awesome rig to his place. And of course I'm really looking forward to the continuing odyssey of big red!
Good job! very interesting. It is cool to hear this old equipment purring.. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.. I'm sure you have hours invested, for our enjoyment.
I would like to see more of this truck and anything else you have hidden away! Well done!
You had asked why we like your videos. For me, love the detailed, down to earth, realistic description, and what you are doing so a fifth grader can understand it.
Most videos are a clean dressed guy in a clean environment, with new clean tools.
Not you, dive Right into it!!
Thank you so very much!
Hope you guys keep working on this beast, it's a beaut ! Well done on getting it running. And totally agree, Taiwan stuff is pretty good.
I am so happy to see you helping a friend so rare these days.
Glad your back missed you and the restorations it made my day to see more. I do miss seeing the dogs. My pyrenees loves listening to your dogs
Thanks again for sharing
Brilliant.... Mike was the best and stayed safe in the end.
As always. Bush mechanics at its absolute best. Love this stuff as it’s what I always had to do coz otherwise we had no machines.
Built Ford tough!
Very cool truck.. thx for taking us along for the ride...
Glad to have you Gary!
I’m hooked. You ability to diagnose a problem and fix or get around it is incredible. Love the Big Red videos as well. 👍
Great job on getting it going and moved, that is a fine little material handling bucket. That jib on the bucket will lift a lot of weight, I think near 1 ton depending on the model (oh, I see you mentioned that at the end). We used those trucks to hang single phase transformers with 1 man, great units.
Nice! You’ve done it again. Keep going and will see you soon. Tnx.
finally! glad to see you getting back in the rhythm!
Great to see ya back in action. Keep up the great work.
Welcome back! Glad to see more of your great videos. Hang it there !👍👍👍👍👍
I'm in love with that truck!!! Good job getting it moving, even if it wasn't in the "standard" operating instructions 😅👍👍👍👍
Screw the dickheads with the negative coments you are my favorite UA-cam and i learn New stuff from you so yust keep the vids coming
Good one.Nice to see old machines moving again
Live your own life and please keep filming it. love it.
AWESOME!... thanks 4 video. be kind.
This episode bright to you by your local starting fluid distributor. 😎
We used less than 1/2 a can.... these old diesels can handle it, trust me, not my first time!
Can be really useful for the projects you tackle. Enjoyable as always. Thanks
Another great one... and I love the whistling melody.
Nice truck good job thanks.
Nicely done SW and Mike. You did what you had to do and got her done.
Another great video man! Thanks!!
I love those old Ford square gages
Glad to see you back putting out content. Thanks for the video, love the 'will it start: genre. Hope to see more soon.
I love your videos so much. Please always show first starts and cold starts with that drivers side view with the door open. It’s so cool to see what you do with the controls and pedals. Would love more cold starts of everything you have including the forklift
Love this truck 🚚 👍
Man what a glorious old work horse. Love it.
2x Mike's comment. Keep the videos coming, Thank you John
Cheers and applause from this 83 yo grandma
Great save, it was touch and go for a bit there.
All the Cosby sauce!!!
I found myself rooting for her pull herself out...go go go you can do it...yyyyeeeess. hell yes i drove her on home too. Im thinking a little air in the tires would help the ride. I love it.
Nais kran.😊😊
Awesome .... Great to hear from you again . Good footage .... Honestly doing the camera work is much harder than fixing the vehicles I think . Keep em coming , if we were neighbors , we have lots of old stuff to share . I think the tires could use 60 or 70 psi , that will help tremendously ,just from a quick observation . Thats a cool truck . It would make a awesome shop truck for sure . The winch is a bonus too. Good score on that old truck .
I just picked up a 10 wheel drive FWD Crane . It has super low range , 4th gear is almost a slow walking speed . I got it running and everything still works , crane winch boom etc.
I understand your passion .
BAD ASS OLD TRUCK ALSO LOVE THE AIR SYSTEM NOISES
Yes! Was just about to check for another upload
You're really amassing a fleet of machines. I see big things in the future...
You haven't seen ANYTHING yet!
I just love it how you take things that are probably going to end up in someone's scrap pile to be melted down to turn into some piece of junk made today and you get them back in shape well try to get them back in shape as fast as you can and get them back into use I love videos like this glad you're back on the trail again my friend can't wait to see what happens to this truck from here thank you 👍😁
Well I would never have thought it would have been able to stand in it jacks after all the se years was expecting the pipes to blow nice work on getting it going and moving looks great another project 😀👍
Great job! Love it and what you did. Need to see it some more.
Really enjoy watching your videos and learning new tricks ignore the haters just keep doing what you do looking forward to seeing any content you create. Especially old red
Epic, I want one!
Cool video; glad to see you get this thing running 👍🏻👍🏻
Bad ass truck!
We used to use WD40 as a starting fluid, give it a try sometime. It lubricates and burns good.
I’d like that cab and frame with a hilarious giant pickup truck bed on it.
Ive had the same desire... A LOT of work, but dang that could be cool!
@@SalvageWorkshop it seriously would be

That was definitely rummaged through. radio gone, glove box open and stuff scattered around. notorious for around here.

Great job you guys. you should get Mike on you channel more often he's a cool dude. Mick, Northern Ireland. 👍
Man that thing ran great once all the air was bled out great job!
Great video and always fun to watch. Hope to see more….Thx.
Nice truck!
Some work for road worthiness and stable running and you're good to go!
Would make a great work truck for salvaging other forgotten vehicles, plenty space for tools and basic spare parts, maybe even a generator with jump start capabilities?
Thx for showing!
:-D
great save.
Man this thing would make a hell of a cool rescue truck for dragging things out of the trees and old barns. Hope we get to see more of Ole Red someday soon.
NOW you see where I'm headed with it!
Amazing job sir 😳
I believe this is the same as the Ford School bus engine and transmission.
Another great video!!
Love it ever episode is an adventure! Real dudes doing real dude stuff. Love it!
Love that old truck if you decide to get rid of it I would love to get a shot at it I have be wanting and needing one
I really enjoy all the content u put out good job. Keep it coming
...good one, stay safe..
Just a small sugestion for next time u find ur self in this situation, crack open the top of the injectors and use the hand pump u have on your tank to draw all the air out.
U crack open the injectors one by one while turning over the engine by hand, make the job a lot easier.
Btw love your chanel
